Study Questions: Hand-out Campbell

Q1:

Similarities to Freuds vision on the Oedipus complex, he explains the

dream he had about accidentally killing his father with a hammer. This
would basically mean that there would be a rivalry between the father
and the son for the mothers attention. He draws on the fact that Freud
stresses on the importance of the first half of a humans life cycle, and
Jung stress more on the second half of the human life cycle
In the absence of an effective general mythology, each of us has his
private, unrecognized, rudimentary, yet secretly potent pantheon
of dreams.
It is a clear that Campbell leans more to the side of Jung than on the
side of Freud. Simply because, he accepts and respects cultural myths
as a relevant part of a certain society without labeling this as some
sort of neurosis.

Q2.

The psycho-analyst of our modern time can be compared to the wise

old men in the primitive times. They are the dream whisperers they
have the capability to analyze dreams and the fore properly guide the
souls through and hurdle which might arise.
I think the model refers to those that are able to analyze dreams as
people who have been bestowed with special particular knowledge
which sets them apart from others.

Q4.

I think with quote nr 1, he refers to the insecurities and fears people

may be going through, which may reflect in dreams for instance. The
analysis of these reflections have already been made by the heroes in
the past. Quote nr 2, there always seem to be a relation between the
divine and the taboo, which is therefore named an abomination, that
which is not allowed to be done. Quote nr 3 would basically also fall
under the concept of quote nr 2 and nr1. Quote nr 4 might mean that
the search for life explanations is not as far as it may seem. And finally
quote nr 5 may refer to the fact that people are never truly alone, at
some point in time on some level, there will always be someone.

Q6.

Campbells hero model is divided in 3 different phase. Beginning with

separation/departure phase where the hero is introduced, and sent off
to adventure. The second phase called the initiation, is the phase
where the hero undoes different trials and tribulations. And finally the
last phase is the return phase. Where the actions of the hero are
acknowledged and perhaps celebrated. Now a recent movie would be a

perfect reflection on this model. The movie named The Hunger

Games, also clearly starts with and introduction of the hero, the lead
character is introduced and then separated from her comfort zone to
commence a journey. The second phase is the actual Hunger Games,
and the dreadful physical and psychological tests it comes with. And
then finally the return phase is also clearly portrayed in this movie. The
lead character returns home victoriously after winning the actual
Hunger Games.

Q7.

Perhaps because Campbell finds it quite easy to categorize individuals

life circumstances in the 3 simple phases of the hero model which he
designed. However life is more complicated than that and can
therefore not be put in those 3 individual boxes. Perhaps the G.I Joe
refers to the fact that.

Q8.

The hippy movement is all about peace, love and respecting each
other. Using narcotics was also a thing, which sent them into a fantasy
trance. These hallucinations could then find some interpretation or
place in the the hero model

Q9.

Starwars is a movie I have not seen before so I could not really tell,
however I can somehow understand though that the heros journey
model could definitely have played a positive influence on the movieindustry. It gives a clear structure of how a storyline concerning heroes
should be described.
