Part A: Course Framework

Scope
This course provides training in the basic theory and principle
operation of separator Systems (ALCAP) for those who will be in
charge of an engineering watch on vessels equipped with separator.
The training comprises all safe working practices aims beyond the use
of operational controls, Because ALCAP separator systems are one of
the important auxiliary engine on board ship even international or
coastwise route. As Alfa Laval is part of a complex system (including
oil and fuel separator, fresh water distiller, filters, strainer and other
component attach on engine.), this training is based on the
functionalities and potential problems is promoted. The theoretical
aspects like all major characteristics of ALCAP separator data such as
data content in electronic programmable controller [EPC] and all major
characteristics of this equipment will be covered in sufficient lecture.
For practical capabilities and skills, exercises are performed which will
provide practice in start-up and operational maintaining the ALCAP
separator is using basic functions and operating equipment in actual
procedure of solid to liquid separation, in activating updates and in
performing proper actions which are necessary for a safe working
practices in engineering watch.

Objective
A participant successfully completing this course will be able to use
ALCAP separator for his engine operational level watch. He will be
able to operate ALCAP separator, use in the lubricating oil and fuel oil
clarifier and purifier functions, to select and assess all relevant
information and take proper action. The participant will acquire and
develop a knowledge and understanding of the basic principles
governing the safe work operation of ALCAP separator, including EPC
[electronic programmable controller] data and their presentation, as
well as the system-related limitations and potential dangers. He will be
able to generate and maintain safety, to operate all basic auxiliary
machineries functions and all specific functions for clarification and
purification as well as in good running conditions, to use and select
proper maintenance and monitoring data in appropriate manner. He
will also be able to perform dismantling and overhauling. He will be
able to analyse malfunction alarms during the separator are running
as well as the sensor and alarms activated. He will be able to assess
the impact of the performance limits of sensors on the safe use of
EPC and to appreciate that the back-up system is only of limited
performance. He will be able to assess errors, inaccuracies caused by
improper working operation. Thus, he will be aware of errors in

displayed data, errors and the possible risk to operate on EPC, and be
able to take proper action. In addition, he will have knowledge of the
basic principle of electronic programmable controller and the safe
working operation of ALCAP separator.

OPERATIONAL USE OF ALCAP SEPARATOR

Entry standards
The course is designated both for candidates for certification as
engine officers in charge of an engineering watch and for experienced
operational level and other engine personnel with responsible duties in
engineering work.
Those wishing to enter this course should have experience in
performing clarification and purification work and should be able to
practise all usual tasks concerning standard engineering watch
keeping procedures and the use of engine equipment. They should
know about the functions and limitations of other auxiliary and main
engine equipment.
They should preferably be familiar with other Alfa Laval product,
including oil and fuel separator, fresh water distiller, etc.

Course certificate
Every chief engineer, first engineer and engine operational level in
charge of an engineering watch on a ship installed with ALCAP
separator should have completed a course in the use of Alfa Laval
Clarifier And Purifier oil and fuel separator. On successful completion
of the course and assessments, a document may be issued certifying
that the holder has successfully completed a course of training which
meets or exceeds the level of knowledge and competence specified in
Section A-III/4 of STCW Code paragraph 2, 3 of Regulation III/4
forming part of engineering on watch keeping. This certificate may be
issued only by centres approved by the Administration. However, the
issuance of a certificate to an officer in charge of an engineering on
watch, in accordance with regulation III/4 of the STCW Convention,
testifies that the candidate has reached the required level of
competence.

Course intake limitations

The course intake will be limited by the availability of equipment such
as ALCAP separator equipment and EPC [electronic programmable
controller] sets, Experience shows that the efficacy of practical training
is optimized when the intake does not exceed ten [10] participant

hands-on exercises is up to 5 hours.)

Staff requirements
The qualifications of the instructor should be in accordance with
requirements laid down in section Sec.
A- III/4 of the STCW Code.
He should also be thoroughly familiar with the operation of the
equipment to be used in the course.

Teaching facilities and equipment

For the theoretical part of the syllabus, a classroom equipped with an
overhead projector and a whiteboard will be required.
For the demonstration of ALCAP separator, the complete set of Alfa
Laval and clarifier purifier with electronic programmable controller is
required. Own separator must be able to make a scenario.
For most practical exercises of the participant, the equipment should
allow a engineering on watch as close to reality as possible in real
time. A complete set of separator including the electronic
programmable controller would be desirable.
