The Archaeology of Ritual and Religion session focuses on rituals and religions in the
Ancient Near East and the Mediterranean through the study of archaeological
remains and material culture. This session aims to explore the many varieties of
religious experience in the Ancient Near East and Mediterranean by facilitating
dialogue and discussion among scholars specializing in differing time periods and
regions, and exploring the complex and sedimented intersectioning of ritual and
religion with other aspects of the human experience. Thus, studies of iconography
and visual culture, objects, architecture, landscape and space, texts, and ritual
practices (such as votive deposition, ritual meals, or funerary practices) are all
welcome. Papers that incorporate the intersectioning of ritual and religion with other
themes, such as power, politics, gender, the body, memory, identity, economics,
landscape, social position, culture contact, and the family, are especially encouraged.
Additionally, this year, papers that complicate current methodological and disciplinary
distinctions between public and private, state and household, or official and folk
religions would be particularly welcome.
