WORKSHEET WEEK 2
1. You have a friend who is of Jewish heritage; however, she has
no religious belief. She asks you why, if God is good, He
permitted the Holocaust to happen. What would you tell her?
RESPONSE: God allows bad things to happen in order to allow a
greater good to occur. As we both studied the Holocaust in school, we
both know that it was a real tragedy. Why does God take such young
children from us home with him when they still had some much life to
live? Gods plan for us is greater than our own. The teenager, who is
tragically killed in a car accident, or the young child who dies of
cancer, why does God take them home so young? When God took
them home and their families started awareness programs, and
scholarship foundations to help others, that was Gods work. When
tragedy happens most of the time, we dont understand how or why
God could let it happen. When it comes to the Holocaust, much
tragedy came from it, but much good came from it to. Our countries
and nations became stronger and more powerful to defend against
future tragedy. We gained greater advancements in medicine, among
many other things. Point being, is that we never understand why God
allows things to happen, but we have to remember that God has a plan
for us, one greater than we know.
I think in this situation, a believer of the Lord should easily be able to
explain and make valid points to the friend without the need for
research or sources to back it up.
2. You want to convince your professor that the reading load he
has assigned is too heavy, given that you also have to write a
research paper. You are asking him to eliminate one book from
the class assignments so that you can concentrate on your own
research.
RESPONSE:Mr. Professor, I am writing regarding the reading
requirements for this course. After review of the syllabus it appears we
are required to an extensive research paper, based on a topic not
relevant to the required reading. I am concerned that with the amount
of reading you have imposed, we will lack sufficient time do the
research that is actually needed for the required paper. I am asking if
you would consider reducing the reading requirements to allow us
students to focus and on a more important assignment. I feel the
research paper is an essential assignment to this course and there is a
lot to be gained from completing this assignment. I think that if we are

able to devote substantial time to this then the paper will serve its
purpose; however, with the current required reading I dont think that
will be possible.
Thank you for your consideration.
I think In this situation, no research is required. I think this would
all have to do with the writers level of persuasive writing. In my
personal opinion, I dont think a professor is going to change the
curriculum of his course just because one student thinks its too much,
but I guess it doesnt hurt to ask in a persuasive manner.
3. You are writing an article for a theological journal arguing that
heaven and hell must be understood as literal, physical places
(as opposed to metaphorical or symbolic states of mind).
RESPONSE: For this topic, I think you would a good amount of
research to prove your position. I think there is little concrete evidence
out there regarding this, however, below I have found the following
scholarly sources that I would use to be help support my position.

4. You want to start exercising for 30 minutes per day, but your
spouse doesnt want to. How would you kindly convince your
spouse to join you?
RESPONSE: Babe, I think it is obvious that we need to start
working out and begin leading healthier life styles. I think if we do it
together there is a lot for us to gain from it. I have conducted some
research and found the following sites that I think have some note
worth information, to include, increasing our bond, holding each other
accountable, and enjoying each others company.

5. You are reviewing a book manuscript for a university press.

Although the book is skillfully and stylishly written, you think

it may obscure or leave out some important facts that need to
be pointed out. How would you point this out (without
suggesting the book is bad and shouldnt be accepted)?
RESPONSE: Without knowing what is missing or the manuscript
topic, it is hard to do research in support of what is missing, but if there
I felt there was something left out, I would go about making suggested
changes like this.
To whom it may concern, I enjoyed reading your manuscript and
think it was very well written and a lot to be gained from reading it.
After reading I because curious as to why there was nothing in there
about _________.
