The Banksy-Bot
by

Ryan Hedblom, 12/7/14

The Banksy-Bot is an automated graffiti tagging robot. Named after the anonymous graffiti artist
Bansky from the United Kingdom, the robot uses two bi-directional gear motors to lift a can of spray
paint and actuate its nozzle. To lift the can, one gear motor is fastened to a pulley via a belt. The belt
is attached to the back of a spray paint carriage gliding on PVC rails. To actuate the nozzle, a lead screw
mechanism is utilized, which transfers the torque of the second gear motor down onto the nozzle
through a modified C-Clamp. The robot sprays a pre-cut stencil placed against a faux-brick wall.
All in all, the Banksy Bot is assuredly UKs most wanted automated vandal.

A dissection of beats pro by dre

FUNCTION:

Beats Pro is a mid-range studio headphone set produced by Beats Audio. The headphones
are constructed of a combination of anodized aluminum and rigid plastics, making them durable and
lightweight. The cans utilize single moving coil drivers and sound cancellation technology to deliver
pristine audio with augmented bass frequencies.

How it works:
1.) Moving Coil Driver:
Inside the can (the part that covers the ear) there is a single copper coil that vibrates to produce sound.
The coil receives electrical signals from a cable connecting it to a signal producer such as an iPod or
Mp3 player and due to Faradays Law of magnetism, the oscillation of charge causes the coil to be
rapidly displaced. The displacement of the coil pushes the surrounding air, which generates
longitudinal sound waves. The sound enters the ear directly and is received by stereocilia in the
cochlea. The stereocilia convert the vibrations into electrical signals, which are interpreted by the
brain.
2.) Cans:
The cans are comprised of four main components: the aluminum casing, plastic body, plastic grating,
and the foam cups. The aforementioned coil is placed directly in the plastic body; the plastic grating fits
over the coil and clamps to the body, sealing the coil into the body; the foam cups fit over the plastic
grating to cushion the ear; the body fits into the aluminum casing and is held together by an adhesive.
(See drawing)
3.) Bridge:
The bridge connects the cans to the headband, which fits over the head. The bridge consists of an
aluminum ring that fits around the can, a toothed track, and a steel pin. The aluminum ring is
attached to the toothed track via the pin. The pin holds the two components together and allows the
ring to rotate 90 degrees about its axis as a result, the cans (which are attached to the ring) can
swing up allowing the headphones to be compacted.
4.) Headband:
The headband consists of an upper and lower band covered by synthetic leather (both bands are formed
from a lightweight aluminum). The lower band has a toothed plastic track screwed into it on the inner
side, which allows for the cups to be raised and lowered to fit various head sizes. The plastic track holds
the toothed element from the bridge and allows the element to smoothly slide up and down along the
track. The lower headband also carries a wire which transfers signal from can to can. The upper and
lower bands converge at the end of the band in a small rectangular aluminum component.

Materials:
Sound Producing Coils: Magnetic Element Ferrite, Coil Copper, Diaphragm Cellulose, Grating
Polystyrene
Cans: Casing Anodized Aluminum, Body Polystyrene, Cup - synthetic leather, foam
Bridge: Anodized Aluminum Ring, Pin Steel, Toothed Component 1 Polystyrene, Steel,
Headband: Band Covering Synthetic Leather, Toothed Component 2 Polystyrene, Bands Al

Interesting Features:
The most interesting features of this product are the ones that contribute to its durable and compact
nature. The steel pins that allow the cans to swivel inward are a crucial feature for those who need to
place headphones in a backpack or other compact storage area. Additionally, the steel composition
ensures the pivots are not points of weakness and can handle quite a bit of strain. Lastly, the toothed
components that allow for adjustable band size are an incredibly intuitive but crucial feature.
