ELECTRONICS 2, 2014

Final Project
You are required to design and build a variable op-amp series
regulator with current protection.
Below are the design specifications.
1. You have a +15V power source. Design a variable regulator which can
adjust between +5V and +10V.
2. Add current protection to your design to protect at 0.5A.
3. Calculate and measure your load regulation at 0.5A @ +10V
4. The +15V power source is now changed to +10V. Determine the line
regulation if the output voltage is set to +5V, +7.5V and +10V.
5. For an additional 10%, use your variable power supply to drive an external
circuit of your choice within the operating limits.

Requirements:
i.
ii.

iii.
iv.

Read Chapter 6 and 17 in Floyd 9th as background to your project.

A type written formal document detailing the design and a
description of the operation of the circuit. Included should be
design calculations, theory of operation and a schematic of the
design.
You need to simulate your design and include it in your report.
You are also required to build and demonstrate the operation of
the circuit.

Due date for report (40%):

next to secretaries office).
50% Penalty if you submit after 10H30 in Lecturers pigeon hole Friday
31 October 2014.
100% Penalty if you submit after 11H00 in the lecture period Friday 31
October 2014.
NO EXCUSES.
o Take an early train, leave your house earlier, Print the day before.
If you cannot make the deadline for personal reasons, you can submit
on Wednesday
29 October 2014 at 10H00 also during the lecture period.

Technical Report writing format:

Note: Report should be 10-20 pgs, including figures. Consult Mayfield Handbook on-line for more
detail on components of a technical report.
Title Page title, author, course no. & instructors, partners, date
Abstract One paragraph, single-spaced, < 150 words; include objectives, methodology, key
results and conclusions
Acknowledgments Placed between abstract and Table of Contents in a technical report
Table of Contents include all sections and subsections w/ appropriate page numbers
List of Figures provide on a separate page, include page numbers
List of Tables - provide on a separate page, include page numbers
Introduction Present motivation, review of pertinent literature, objective, method of investigation,
brief outline of remainder of paper. Reference all your sources, and summarise various sources of
information in your own words. This is a section where students tend to copy large pieces of text
from various sources and present it as their own work. That action is referred to as plagiarism.
CPUT has strict rules regarding plagiarism.
Theory Provide theoretical model with basic governing equations. Number equations in
parentheses flush right. Reference appropriate sources. (You may or may not require a separate
theory section.)
Materials and Methods Provide schematic diagrams where appropriate. Organize experimental
procedure in chronological order. Section should be sufficiently descriptive to allow duplication of the
experiments, including make/model of instruments, materials suppliers, quantities used, instrument
parameters, etc.
Results (Heavy weighting i.t.o marks) Present only important results of your work, using a
minimum number of figures and tables. All figures and tables must be described in the text and should
generally be incorporated near/after their mention in the text.
Discussion (Heavy weighting i.t.o marks) Provide interpretation of the results, compare with
theory, discuss possible sources of error, how your results compare to previous work, etc.
Conclusions - Summarize results of study in terms of original motivation, and important conclusions
from the work. Mention potential future work which could resolve any outstanding questions.
Conclusions may also be incorporated at the end of the Discussion section.
References Use full citations including titles of journal articles. (Consult Mayfield Handbook.)
Should be placed after the body of the report. Avoid using web sites and unpublished notes as
sources. If using numbered references, numbers should be according to chronological appearance
in the text.
Appendices - Appendices may include derivations or tabulated data which you feel the reader should
have access to, but are not appropriate for the body of the article.
Figures and Tables Appear in the body of the report, soon after their mention in the text. Captions
should be typed and numbered in order of appearance in text. Figure captions should be placed below
each figure. Table headings go at the top of the table.

Plagiarism Declaration for . (COURSE)

I understand that plagiarism means academic theft i.e. using someone elses work and
putting it forth as ones own. This could comprise: electronic copies e.g. copies from the
internet, including YouTube and printed sources e.g. books, journals, magazines, etc.
Please tick off each point below, PRINT your details & sign below.
I declare that:

I have not plagiarised in the attached assignment/ task/ written piece.

I have applied in-text referencing on all information that comes from electronic and
printed sources, including pictures, diagrams, charts, graphs and tables.

I have used the Harvard system for in-text referencing as well as out-of-text
referencing.

I have used the IEEE system for in-text referencing as well as out-of-text referencing.

In the case of group work, each member of the group have signed the plagiarism
document. Each member understands the consequences of plagiarism.

As an individual assignment, I declare that I have not copied the work of another
student.

I have used my own words in writing the attached assignment/ text, and have not
copy and pasted any materials.

I understand that I must still use in-text referencing even though I have written texts
in my own words.

I understand that it is unacceptable to copy any tasks/ projects from print or internet
sources even if they appear as free downloads and despite the use of in-text
referencing.
