Unlesssomeadditionalfactorsarisewhichmakesthecolumnaspecialcase,seeAD275,columnsinbracedbays
ofsimplestructuresshouldbedesignedinaccordancewithclause4.7.7ofBS59501:2000takingaccountof
nominalmoments.
Figure1showstypicalbracedbayswhichareusuallyanalysedaspinjointedframeswithallthemembersata
nodeintersectingatacommonpointontheircentrelinesinordertodeterminetheloadeffectsinthemembers
underverticalandlateralloading.
Assumingpinnedjointsinordertodetermineforcesinmembersignoresthenominalmomentsdescribedinclause
4.7.7ofBS59501:2000whichmustbetakenintoaccountinthedesignofcolumnsinsimplestructures.Inmost
casesthevalueofthenominalmomentiscalculatedfromtheassumed100mmeccentricityofthebeamend
reactionfromthefaceofthecolumnandthenetnominalmomentatanyleveldistributedassetoutinclause4.7.7.
Traditionally,whencalculationswereroutinelyperformedbyhand,thenominalmomentsforthecolumnswere
combinedwiththeaxialloadsinthecolumnsfromtheanalysisofthepinjointedframes.Thisshouldstillbedone
evenwhentheframeanalysisiscarriedoutusingsoftware.Atleastonecommerciallyavailablesoftwarepackage
combinestheaxialloadsandnominalmomentsinthecolumnsautomatically.However,designersshouldbe
carefulnottoignorethenominalmomentsinthedesignofthecolumnswhenanalysingthepinjointedframesfor
bracedbaysusinggeneralplaneframeanalysispackages.
AnotherADwillfollowshortlywhichwilldescribethecommoncaseswherethesettingsoutpointsofthediagonal
bracingmembersinbracedbaysaredisplacedfromtheintersectionofthecentrelinesofthebeamsandcolumns.
