WELCOME
The Return to Princeton
Greetings,
On behalf of the entire 2014 Ivy Sports Symposium Planning Committee, Board of Directors, Advisory Committee, Young Leaders
Committee and Sports Symposium Fellow, it is our distinct pleasure to welcome you to the 9th Annual Ivy Sports Symposium.
Today, the Ivy Sports Symposium returns to its roots at Princeton University, where just less than nine years ago it originated
as a vision of former Princeton undergraduate, Chris Chaney. Featuring 25 speakers from diverse corners of the industry, the
Princeton Sports Symposium was born. It set out to bring together industry leaders and their potential successors to cultivate
both information sharing and relationship building. Almost a decade later, the Symposium has now featured over 400 unique
speakers from around the globe and attracted student attendees from over 50 colleges and universities. Despite this growth, we
are proud that the mission of the Symposium has stayed the course.
Each year, the Ivy Sports Symposium recognizes individuals and organizations that have accomplished truly exceptional and
outstanding feats within the industry and places a spotlight on those destined to shape its future. We hope that the synergy
developed through bringing these two groups together will spark ideas and innovative approaches to conquering the challenges
that lie ahead and taking advantage of the industrys greatest opportunities.
Furthermore, this event would not be possible without our valued sponsors and partners. Their tremendous generosity has
enabled the Ivy Sports Symposium to become one of the worlds premier sports business conferences.
Finally, we thank you for your support and are delighted to host you at what will undoubtedly be our best installment yet.
Best Regards,

SHARK TANK
Introducing the Shark Tank Competition
Dear Guests,
Sports Symposium Inc. is pleased to announce the launch of the Ivy Sports Symposium Shark Tank Competition! This opportunity
was created to offer sports-related start-ups a platform to share their ideas and accomplishments with event attendees.
Staged before a unique audience of aspiring and accomplished sports business professionals at the conference, shortlisted
teams will provide compelling cases to highlight their entrepreneurial accomplishments. After a call for applications, three
impressive finalists were selected.
Presentations and ideas will be evaluated by our judges panel which includes five established sports industry professionals
who have experience and expertise in entrepreneurship, venture capitalism, marketing and start-ups, among other specialties.
The judges will initiate a question and answer session following the presentations and base their decision on the following
criteria: value proposition, the opportunity teams have identified, idea originality and innovation, market potential and the
likeliness of whether they would invest.
The winning team will receive advisory services and one all expense round trip airlines ticket to anywhere in the world, provided
by Turkish Airlines.
Good luck to our finalists!
Sincerely,

Jason Fixelle (Harvard JD 16)

EVERYONE

A RISE IN

A C C E P TA N C E
BY LAURA BERESTECKI

Sams sexuality by showing him and his boyfriend celebrating

his draft selection on ESPN was an important step forward for
the league. And the changes arent just in mens professional
sports; numerous college athletes came out this year as well,
and the WNBAs Brittney Griner released a biography focused
on the challenges she faced before and after coming out and
recently got engaged to fellow WNBA player Glory Johnson.

s we look back on the events that shaped the sports

industry
in the
2014,
it is easy
to focusthe
onsports
the negatives.
As we look
back on
events
that shaped
industry
When
about
what happened
the world
of
in 2014, it is
easy thinking
to focus on
the negatives.
When in
thinking
about
sports this
pastwyear, many peoples first thoughts
what happened
in the
will be of Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson, or Donald Sterling. The
negative reactions to these scandals were inescapable, and
the leagues will certainly have to learn how to address such
problems in more effective ways now that information spreads
so quickly through social media. However, there have also been
many positive changes in sports this year that deserve our
attention. One of the most important things to happen in the
sports industry this year has been the promotion of the idea that
sports are for everyone. Looking at the major sporting events in
2014, from the NFL Draft to the Winter Olympics, weve been
able to witness how far the sports industry has come in terms
of acceptance.

In addition to the strides made this year by LGBTQ athletes,

womens sports also gained some traction. Mens teams have
traditionally been the moneymakers, but respect for female
athletes is growing. The intense competition seen in womens
hockey at the Olympics certainly helped this trend. The success
of the USA and Canadian teams has resulted in an increased
interest in the sport, especially among younger girls. Female
athletes are also gaining more respect; in October, both Anne
Schleper and Hilary Knight practiced with NHL teams, and in
August, Little League pitcher Mone Davis became a national
sensation. Davis was recently featured in a moving ad for
Chevrolet in which she states, I throw 70 miles per hour thats throwing like a girl. These acknowledgements that
women belong in sports just as much as men do extends off
the playing field too Michele Roberts, the new head of the
NBPA, is a woman.

The area in which weve seen the most change this year has
been the acceptance of LGBTQ players, particularly with male
athletes. The founding of You Can Play in 2012 was a big first
step in helping to foster acceptance for gay athletes in sports,
and in 2014 the group hit some big milestones. In January,
Gabriel Landeskog of the Colorado Avalanche voiced his support
for the organization. With Landeskogs support, every team
in the NHL now has at least 1 player that has publicly agreed
with the organizations motto: if you can play, you can play.
Additionally, every NHL team showed their support on Spirit
Day in October of this year, with many of them making their
social media avatars purple or tweeting about You Can Play and
GLAAD. The NHL lacks an out player, but their willingness to
support acceptance seems to grow every year.

As we reflect on the great steps towards equality that the

sports industry has made this year, it is also important to
recognize what we can do to keep making things better. The
reporters that made ignorant remarks about Michael Sam
and the racist recordings of Donald Sterling remind us that
there will always be people who dont easily accept change.
Similarly, Russias harsh homosexuality laws and the stress
they caused for Olympic athletes should serve to show us that
we need to figure out how to engage with the global sports
industry without compromising our standards.

Other leagues have made important strides this year as

well. The NBA had their first openly gay player when newlyout Jason Collins signed with Brooklyn in February. Upon his
signing, Collins jersey rose to the top sales spot on NBA.com.
Similarly, the NFL saw openly gay player Michael Sam drafted
by the Rams, although he failed to make the team. Regardless
of whether or not he makes it in the NFL, the normalization of

Women fought back against gender issues this year;

complaints about the pink, overly-feminized merchandise
options offered to women show that it is important to market
to your actual audience, not just your perceptions of them,
while the wage gap between male and female athletes should
encourage us as industry professionals to consider how we
can continue to grow the popularity of womens sports. But
perhaps most importantly, the success and popularity of
female athletes and gay athletes in the past year shows us
that no matter what part of the industry we work in, we should
in fact be judging others based on dedication and skill.

Organizational Philosophies: Building a Winning Culture

REGENCY BALLROOM
For any professional sports franchise to attain success, a consistent culture and philosophy of excellence must remain
at the core. Defining this culture and instilling it across all organizational levels is a necessary challenge sports
franchises must overcome. With a diverse range of employees from stadium vendors to highly-paid athletes, a sense
of team can be difficult to develop. Yet, this is a necessary task for an organization to reach its full potential. How do
franchises develop such a culture? What are the best ways to instill it on day-to-day basis? And what values are most
crucial to achieving success both on and off the field?

PRINCETON
Sport often serves as a unique commonality that has the potential to bring people of all racial, religious and economic

positive social change in an exciting and purposeful manner. Additionally, sport has the power to provide confidence
and an opportunity to individuals across the globe. Yet to reach these lofty ideals, stakeholders in the sport for
development space face challenges around fundraising, increasing awareness, measuring impact and establishing
strategic partnerships. How do individuals and groups aiming to use sport for social change identify and achieve shared

in an arms race to produce the most accurate metrics. How are teams staying ahead of this curve? What role will player
tracking and training metrics have in the next five years? How can analytical companies like Opta and STATS continue to
supplement team needs? And how can the media thrive on this movement to improve the sports viewer experience?
