Online fundraising for the new Lions Regional Outdoor Rink officially kicked off on
Feb. 6. The rink, which will be located on the
Strathmore and District Agricultural Society
grounds, is expected to cost approximately
$368,700.
To date just over $150,000 has been raised
towards the project, thanks to the Strathmore
Lions donating $75,000, which was matched
in a grant from Alberta Culture through their
Community Facility Enhancement program.
Theres a potential were actually going to
reduce what our end cost is based on offers
that are being made by the public, said Ryan
Parkins, a volunteer board member with the
project.
Local businesses have offered in-kind services to help with the project, and we have
got new corporate sponsors who have expressed interest recently, so theres quite a bit
of buzz about that.
The reasons for going online for fundraising are twofold. It helps create community
awareness while providing a place to which
people can contribute. It also allows people
to see how much has been raised to date, and
find out more information about the project.
The day the gofundme page launched
3,000 people saw it. Since then it has been
shared 379 times across different social media
outlets.
Parkins said the fundraising efforts are twopronged. The public one is through this online
campaign. Donations can also be dropped off
at the town office.
The second part of the fundraising effort is
members of the board are now approaching
corporate sponsors with a sponsorship package. Depending on how fundraising efforts
go over the next little while, the board may
introduce other fundraising avenues at a later
date. The board also plans to continue applying for additional grant funding to help lower
the costs.
The rink will be multi-use, free of charge
and accessible year round. It will be 80feet
x 180feet built on a reinforced concrete
slab, and will be maintained by the Town of
Strathmore under the Parks Department. Go
to
http://www.gofundme.com/outdoorrink
to donate, or to keep up-to-date on whats
happening with the rink like the Facebook
page Lions Regional Outdoor Rink. The board
hopes to see construction begin this summer.

LAND USE TEXTUAL

AMENDMENT BYLAWS
The following Land Use Textual Amendment Bylaws will be presented
to Council for consideration on March 4, 2015.
Public Hearing, March 4, 2015, 7:00 pm: Bylaw# 15-01 and Bylaw#
15-06 Textual Amendments to Land Use Bylaw 14-11. Summary of
Amendments are as follows:
Bylaw# 15-01
Corrects or addresses setbacks from a side property line for the
principal building in the following residential districts: R1N, R2X and R3.
Addresses Setbacks for Accessory Buildings
Revises minimum lot widths for certain dwelling unit types in
residential districts
Setbacks from a side property line provide space between buildings
affecting their appearance and the overall appearance of the
streetscape while providing space for fire protection, access to rear
yards, sunlight penetration, air circulation, privacy, drainage, as well
as space for utilities and related matters. The LUB, as passed in
September of 2014, changed the setbacks for a principal building from a
side property side in the R1N, R2X, and R3 districts. These setbacks are
currently 1.0 m which is viewed as a typographical error. This Bylaw
proposes a minimum setback of 1.5 m. Greater setbacks apply to taller
buildings and corner lots.
Lot widths affect density and the overall appearance of a streetscape.
The LUB currently allows 7.62m wide lots in both newly developing
areas and existing areas. This width is viewed as inappropriate in new
subdivisions recognizing that the Town wishes to retain elements of its
character.
Bylaw# 15-06
Amend the Heading in section 3.26 Secondary Suites by removing
the words Secondary Suites and replacing these words with Garden
Suites.
Section 3.26 Secondary Suites is amended by removing the heading,
namely, Secondary Suites, and clauses 1. to 9. under this heading.
Remove Sections 4.1 (2) (b) (vi), 4.2 (2) (b) (vi), 4.3 (2) (b) (v), and 4.4 (2) (b)
(vii), Secondary Suites from the list of Discretionary Uses in the R1,
R1N, R1S, and R2 Land Use Districts.
Remove the words unless an approved secondary suite from Sections
4.1 (3) (f), 4.2 (3) (f), and 4.3 (3) (e), from General Site Requirements in R1,
R1N, and R1S, Land Use Districts.
To review a full copy of Bylaw 15-01 and Bylaw 15-06, please contact

Games poster unveiled

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The Strathmore 2015 Alberta 55 Plus
Summer Games committee has officially unveiled their games poster on Feb.
9. Bret Kenworthy, who is best known
in town for his Strathmore Stampede
posters, volunteered his time to help
create the poster.
Colleen Huber, games manager, said
in a promotions meeting the committee
was trying to figure out how to get the
poster done and decided on a design
when Shauna Kenworthy offered to
check with her son to see his availability. The younger Kenworthy said the
poster was created through a collaboration with his mom.
She told me about the idea and she
helped me design the poster, it was
kind of her inspiration, she had all the
ideas and I put it together, said Bret.
We took pictures that would replicate an Alberta landscape and because
its our time to shine is the slogan, so
my mom really wanted to do something
with sunrays.
This year marks 35 years for the 55
Plus Summer Games. This years Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games will be held
in Strathmore July 16-19.

Strathmore RCMP are currently

investigating a break and enter to a
residence. On February 7th between
the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
unknown suspect(s) broke into a
residence located on Westwood
Street. It appears that the suspect(s)
gained entry through the
back patio door, obtaining
jewelry and misc. items valuing
approximately $3000.00.
If you have any information that
could help assist in solving this
investigation please contact the
Strathmore RCMP.

Capsule Comments
People with Type 1 diabetes have reason to hope
that they wont have to inject insulin for the rest of
their lives. Scientists are working with stem cells.
It is known that stem cells can be trained to act like
any other type of body cell and the researchers are
training them to produce human insulin. Many steps
must be taken before actual clinical trials can take
place around 2017 but it looks promising.
Everyone loves snack foods at times. Instead of
reaching for the potato chips and pretzels, try some
nuts. Almonds, pistachios, cashews, walnuts and
pumpkins seeds do contain fat but these fats are
polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats which
are good for us. They are also packed with protein.
It takes about 5 to 6 hours for our bodies to
eliminate half the caffeine in a cup of coffee. Some
people need that to help kickstart their days. Its also
a reason why coffee too late in the day may not be
advisable if you have sleeping problems.
Most cold pills contain an antihistamine and
a decongestant. The antihistamine helps to dry
mucus secretions and reduce the irritation caused
by coughing. The decongestant relieves the stuffy
feeling in the nose and sinuses. Some products may
contain a pain reliever and/or a cough suppressant
which may or may not be needed. The best product
choice is one that treats only the symptoms you have.
Dont hesitate to ask our pharmacists questions
about cold medications or any other type We have
the answers.

There are also ways to

manage symptoms on a
day-to-day basis:
Avoid pollution and
irritants. Avoid rubbing
your eyes, which can
disturb the tear film and
transfer irritants to your
eyes.
Hydrate. If you are dehydrated, the fluid in your
eyes can be depleted, so
drink lots of liquids.
Take special care with
contact lenses. Contact
lenses can soak up the
fluid in your eye. Keep
them clean, and try not to
wear them all the time.
Blink! Try to blink
every five seconds, especially when staring at
your computer screen or
digital device.
Book an appointment. The best way to
get a proper diagnosis
and treatment is to see a
Doctor of Optometry. In
Alberta the cost for an annual eye exam is covered
for children and teens up
to age 19 and adults 65
years and older. To book

Protecting your eyes

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter
Alberta winters can be tough
on our bodies. The dryness in
the air seems to suck the moisture from our skin and lotion
becomes almost a necessity.
But did you know that it also
wreaks havoc on your eyes?
By February were in the
middle of winter, and the dry
winter climate has taken hold.
For many Albertans this time of
year also brings on aggravating
dry eye symptoms.
Dry eye is one of the most
common conditions that I see

on a daily basis, especially

in the winter, says Dr. Chris
Johnson of Ranch Market Eyecare. The symptoms can range
anywhere from annoying to
debilitating, and finding the
right treatment can be a challenge.
Dry eye occurs when the
eyes dont produce enough
quality tears. Heavy reading or
digital device use, prolonged
contact lens wear, hormonal
imbalances and even certain
medications can contribute to
the disease.
My patients deal with a wide
variety of symptoms, said

Johnson. Some say their vision

is blurry or that their eyes are
sensitive to light. Others complain about a scratchy or gritty
feeling, and say that sometimes
it feels like something is stuck
in their eye.
In some cases, said Johnson,
the eyes may try to create more
tears in response to the dryness, which can result in excessive watering. Optometrists
will often ask a series of questions, and can conduct specialized tests to diagnose dry eye.
There is no cure, but it can be
helped. Treatment options include changes to your lifestyle

and/or diet, eye medication,

over-the-counter lubrications,
in-office eyelid procedures and
at-home treatments.
Dry eye can cause permanent tissue damage if left untreated, so its really important
to see your optometrist if you
are having problems, says Dr.
Johnson.
Early detection, as with anything, is key in successfully
treating any eye disease. During your eye exams discuss
lifestyle changes and different
treatment options with your
optometrist to help prolong
your eye health.

Venture to Discovery
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter
Having an opportunity to
meet and listen to an astronaut is not something everyone can claim, but the opportunity will be there this
March in Strathmore for anyone interested. Venture to
Discovery, the 2015 Canadian Badlands Annual General
Meeting and conference, will
be held in Strathmore March
25-27.
Keynote speakers will include the first Canadian female astronaut Roberta Bondar. She is also a neurologist
and adventurer who has
traveled the world making

presentations rich in insight

and humour.
I think it was just an attempt to see the benefits of
a conference like this spread
around Southern Alberta,
spread around the Canadian
Badlands and its also an opportunity for people to come
and see what Strathmore has
in terms of its tourism operations, said Brad Tucker, Executive director for the Canadian Badlands about why
Strathmore was chosen as a
host community.
Other keynote speakers for
the conference include Robin Esrock, a travel journalist,
TV host and author of the
Great Canadian Bucket List.

ALL THE BINGO PLAYERS!

David McKenna, president of Brewster

Travel Canada will also be speaking to
anyone interested about his commitment to Alberta and its mountain culture. McKenna also played a pivotal
role in getting the Glacier Skywalk in
Jasper approved.
During the conference there will also
be the opportunity for different municipalities to host mini presentations talking about their communities success,
including Strathmore and the success
of the Strathmore Stampede and Running with the Bulls.
It is open to anybody, so anyone
who is interested in tourism, anyone
who is interested in hearing one of
the keynote (speakers), anyone who
is interested in travel or interested in
just networking with people from their
community, said Tucker.
Theres a lot of good reasons to be
there, theres going to be some great
food, great entertainment but I think
the main thing is just meeting people
and gaining that sort of strength.
In addition to the mini presentations
and the speakers there will be workshops available. Workshops being offered include one on culinary tourism
and how to use food as the centre of
the experience. There will be a section
on social media and learning how use
it, keep it effective and really make it
happen for your businesses. Another
workshop being offered will be on
small museum development, and how
to get things off the ground.
Were going to be talking about
growing visitation in the Canadian Badlands, so basically how do we attract
people into the region, said Tucker.
Registration is now open, and there
is an early bird savings until March 1.
Daily rates are also an option for anyone that would like to see a certain
keynote speaker, but not attend the entire conference.
Registration will be accepted until
March 12. For more information about
the speakers, workshops and accommodations go to www.cblconference.

Anti-terrorism measures to protect Canadians

KEVIN SORENSON, M.P., CROWFOOT
Parliamentary Report

The world is a dangerous place and, as most
brutally demonstrated by last Octobers attacks
in Ottawa and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Canada is
not immune to the threat of terrorism. Thats why
Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the
Government will bring forward legislation to protect Canadians from the evolving threat of terrorism and help keep our communities safe.
The proposed legislation (Bill C-51, the Antiterrorism Act, 2015) will provide Canadian law
enforcement and national security agencies with
additional tools and flexibility to keep pace with
evolving threats and better protect Canadians here
at home. Bill C-51 will help keep Canadians safe
by creating a new Criminal Code offence that will
criminalize the promotion of terrorist attacks on
Canadians. This legislation will interfere with terrorist recruitment by giving our courts the authority to order the removal of terrorist propaganda
online. The Canadian Security Intelligence Service
(CSIS) will be given the ability, under judicial authority, to intervene to prevent specific terror plots
while they are still in the planning stages.
As the Government, we recognize that the highest responsibility of our Government is to help
keep Canadians safe and our country secure. We
must make it easier for law enforcement agencies
to detain suspected terrorists before they can harm
Canadians and toughen penalties for violating court
ordered conditions on terror suspects. We are even
providing witnesses who are willing to come for-

ward with crucial evidence additional protection dates on what is happening in Ottawa and across the riding
in national security proceedings and prosecutions. https://www.facebook.com/SorensonKevinA or follow me on

This new legislation will give our law enforce
ment and national security agencies the tools they
need to protect Canadians against the ever-evolving threat of jihadi terrorism.
Bill C-51 provides federal departments and agencies the ability to share relevant information and

this strengthens the Passenger Protect Program,
which prevents known terrorists from travelling.

As well, the legislation ensures national security
agencies are able to prevent foreigners who pose a
threat to Canada from obtaining Canadian citizenship, or from even coming to Canada.
Jihadi terrorism is not a human right; it is an act
of war. As your Member of Parliament, I will vote
in support of our Government taking these proactive measures against future would-be terrorists.
Bill C-51 strengthens and protects the rights of Canadians against jihadi terrorists.

PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
Im sure youve noticed, but Strathmore has a bit
of a traffic problem. Yes, its hard to believe, but
there is a definite rush hour at certain points of
the day. For example, if you are trying to turn left
onto Wheatland Trail between 8:10 a.m. and 8:30
a.m. well, get ready to hunker down, and wait.
I seem to get stuck behind someone who never
wants to try this left turn, until theres a space of
about a five second count! That means you wait.
I think they feel guilty at the line of vehicles growing behind, because they creep ahead a bit, to
make you think they might take a risk and actually
turn! Its tough to sit back and count the steamboats where a turn could have been done, but
theyre waiting for that perfect 5-10 second spacing! They also tend to stay way to the right of that
lane, so no one can turn right onto Wheatland
big mess (I know I must sound like I have road
rage, but it can be frustrating I mean, Im in a
rush to bring learning to the Youth of Today)!
Theres another frustrating intersection at 2nd
Avenue and Wheatland Trail. Again, if youre trying
to turn left on to Wheatland Trail to head south,
at certain times, good luck! With the school zone
right at that intersection, and the number of large
vehicles cruising through, that would be enough.
But oh no, if you are lucky to turn left and get on
to Wheatland, you are right at a pedestrian crosswalk! So, you wait, you creep out, then zip onto
the road, only to brake hard as kids loaded down
with snowsuits and backpacks hit the crosswalk
button. If youve noticed todays youth crossing
roads, then you also know they dont seem to want
to wait to make sure things are safe! Oh no, they
feel that everyone must stop for them, just because

they step out onto a road. How many times have

you tried to go through an intersection, only to
have a kid step right out, no looking, head down,
and just cross! If they do make eye contact, they
usually stare you down a bit with a bit of an
obnoxious, yeah, thats right you better stop!
I think I did kind of snap about a week ago.
I had turned left onto Thomas Drive, at the 4-way
stop in front of SHS. Just as I am headed south and
about to go by the first cul de sac, a girl stepped
right out, head down, while her friend waited. Her
friend even yelled something at her, as she stayed
back! I had to slam on the brakes then looked
at another driver who also was trying to make a
turn! We looked at each other, shook our heads,
then made exact what are ya gonna do gestures
with our arms. It was like we were united by this
girls dumbness! Then, that same first girl looked
back at me, with a look that would kill, if you let it
(heck, Ive raised a teenaged daughter that look
doesnt scare me)! Before I realized it, I had a nonverbal gesture for her! No, it wasnt the finger
I mean I am a teacher I do have some self-respect (hear that, Mr. Prentice?). No, before I knew
it, I had made the big letter L with my right hand,
then pointed at her! It felt great! It wasnt obscene,
and the best part, is that it made her friend point at
her and break into hysterical laughter! I looked at
my temporary driver pal he was laughing, too!
I guess teaching a lesson to todays youth can take
many forms! I felt warm all over but that might
have been a bit of road rage Strathmore-style!

February is distracted driving month

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter
Distracted driving has become a major cause of 2030 per cent of accidents and
fatalities on our roadways,
which is why the RCMP and
the Sheriffs departments
have proclaimed February

as Distracted Driving Month.

Throughout the month
of February the Alberta Integrated Traffic Unit (ITU)
has been focusing its efforts
on reinforcing the dangers
associated with distracted
driving in an attempt to help
reduce fatalities and serious
injury crashes.

Spring was buzzing in the air at The Strathmore Public Library on

Wednesday, February 4th at 7pm. The Strathmore Country Gardens
Club were forcing bulbs to get Spring here just a little bit earlier. There
was a great turnout as we welcomed some more new members to our
growing family. There was lots of learning and growing going on. We
should have some beautiful Spring flowers here in another couple of
weeks and hopefully some members will share their creations. Marchs
project for Wednesday, the 4th will be Garden Fancies. We will be collecting different colored old glass pieces to make flower ornaments,
birdbaths and other creative ideas for the garden. If you are interested
please feel free to join us at 7pm.

The distracted driving legislation

first came into effect on Sept. 1, 2011.
Since then there have been over 60,000
charges laid for the offense. Just in
2014 there were 23,913 convictions for
distracted driving, and on only one day
in January of this year the Integrated
Traffic Units in Southern Alberta wrote
51 tickets, one of which was for a person working on their laptop while
driving.
We need your help to make our
roads and highways safer, said Superintendent Eaton, Officer in Charge of
RCMP Traffic Services in a press release.
Dont be a half-attentive driver because you or someone else may lose
their life.
A vehicle travelling at 100 km an
hour moves at approximately 30 metres per second, which means in the
three seconds you may take to glance
at a cell phone, that vehicle has travelled almost 100 metres, or 270 feet.
People are being killed all across
Canada every day due to distracted
driving. In many communities it is taking over as the leading cause of vehicle
crashes, responsible for more crashes
than even impaired driving.
Saying no to distracted driving is
about saving lives, said Superintendent Stiles, Officer in Charge of Alberta
Traffic Sheriffs.
Before you drive, put distracting devices or material out of reach because
driving is a full-time job.
For more information about the distracted driving legislation go to http://

Living without fear

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Freedom facilitator and coach Annette Stanwick
will be hosting a Letting Go and Living Without
Fear seminar on Feb. 25 (6:30 p.m.) at Days Inn
and Suites.
She will teach couples how to face their fears
and making the right choices to eliminate them.
It will be strategies for limitless, bold, brave
and courageous living everybody is afraid of
something at sometime, said Stanwick. Fear can
really be paralyzing and hold us back from things
in our lives, situations in our relationships and can
exhaust us with worry.
She will do a unique exercise at the end of the
seminar that has changed the way people look at
their fears.
I have a real fun exercise right at the very end
of the seminar that is pretty phenomenal called

Busting out of Your Fears. Ill bring a cardboard

box and I try to find someone in the audience
that will be strong and willing to help me with
this exercise and we will be talking about how
fears can confine us and get us stuck in this box
we just cant seem to move, said Stanwick. I did
this once before and I called a man up out of the
audience, I saw him when he walked in the room
and asked him if hed be willing to help me.
She made the man get in the box and he had to
kick and punch his way out of there and the result
was surprising.
He did it and when he stood up, he said you
have no idea how I needed that, said Stanwick.
She will also strategize with them about choices
they make during a normal day.
If people are interested in the seminar you will
have to pre-register by contacting Stanwick at annete@annettestanwick.com or by phone at 403983-1844.

Talking to kids about drugs

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter
Knowing how and when to talk to your kids
about drugs can be tough. You dont want to push
them too hard, but at the same time you want them
to understand the consequences that could come
from drug abuse.
Starting Feb. 26 the Kids and Drugs information session will be in Carseland. They are free to
attend, and open to any parent looking to learn
more.
Its for parents, it is very important they know
this is a program about positive parenting and
drug prevention. It is not a program that is geared
to counselling for the youth, said Lynn Walker, a
team facilitator with SWAT.
The sessions are held Thursday nights from 6:30
p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Four topics will be discussed
throughout the four sessions. The first week is talking about the power of parenting and how much

of an impact you can have on your kids. The second session is helping your child make good decisions; the third session is talking with your kids
and learning how to have that dialogue with them.
The fourth week is when the RCMP come out
with their big drug display and go over everything
with them and just give an idea of different things
that they look for with each of the drugs, said
Walker.
Parents will be given a workbook to help so they
have ideas as they go along, and it has some information in it.
Kids and Drugs it is sponsored by the Strathmore-Wheatland Addictions Team, the RCMP and
Alberta Health Services and the community of
Carseland. The four sessions will be held at the
community hall each Thursday, with the exception
of March 12, beginning on Feb. 26. The sessions
are free to attend but pre-registration is requested.

BE COURAGEOUS!
Often times, people get confused, not knowing what to
do next when overwhelmed
by unpleasant situations and
circumstances; when they
have Issues to be resolved and
challenges to be confronted, but
there is always something to do
even in that confused state.
Hear what God told Gideon in
Judges 6:14; 14 Then the LORD
turned to him and said, Go in
this might of yours, and you shall
save Israel from the hand of the
Midianites. Have I not sent you?
Gideon was a young man who
had questions about God and
the life of his people, Israel. He
was a frustrated man who felt
very powerless in the face of
the many troubles around him.
He wondered why the God who
worked miracles in the past
would not step in to deliver
Israel from the Midianites who
plundered their wealth.
When God responded to Gideons query, He did not offer anything new to Gideon. God simply
told him to use the power that he

already had, to go and conquer

the Midianites. In other words,
the power that Gideon needed
was already inside of him. He
did not have a lack of power but
a lack of confidence. He did not
need more power; he needed
more courage. Many of us are
like Gideon and we complain
without knowing the power in us.
God has given you tremendous
ability; His ability is a part of
Himself. The power of God in you
is able to perform the tasks that
God has called you to perform.
His power at work in you can
move every mountain and make
every path straight before you.
Have faith in God and have faith
in your abilities. You are well
able.
This week recognize Gods
power at work in you. God is
with you. You are well able. As
Gideon put the Midianite armies
to flight, so will you also put the
enemy to flight.
Go in this might of yours!

NHL and Calgary Flames alumni will

be coming to Strathmore for a charity
hockey game on March 15. The game
is being presented by the Strathmore
2015 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games
committee and is just one of the many
fundraisers the committee is doing
leading up to the games in July.
Theres room for three players on
the alumni team, and one coach position which is being auctioned off. Currently the bids are sitting at $250 for
the guest coach position, and between
$250-$260 for a players position. Bids
can be made by going to strathmorehockeygame.com, and there are also
auction boxes at some local businesses
within town.
Each week leading up to the game,

names are being released for the alumni team. So far officially confirmed are
Dana Murzyn, Dennis Polonich and
Neal Coulter for the players. Archie Big
Daddy Henderson has been announced
as one of the coaches. Brief bios on the
players can be found on the website.
Its kind of exciting, we havent had
something like this in Strathmore for a
long time. Were having fun organizing
it, said Games Manager Colleen Huber.
Following the March 15 hockey game
there will be a meet and greet at the
Strathmore Civic Centre. The doors will
open at 6:30 p.m. and alumni will arrive between 7-7:30 p.m. Tickets for the
hockey game itself are $15 per adult,
$10 for children and $40 for a family
pack, which is two adult and two children tickets.
Meet and greet tickets will be sold
separately for $10 a ticket.

Mega Smore added to triathlon

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

It will be five years this summer since
the Tri-Smore organizers first chalked
Brent Blvd with start and finish lines
for the new triathlon. The event began
with Niki Johnsons goal of getting people out, active and having fun.
Were still all about removing the
barriers, if you need a flutter board to
do your swim, who cares, even with
little kids lifejackets are allowed, we
just dont let the flippers in the pool
because with more people in the pool
they can hurt if you get kicked by one,
said Johnson.
New this year is the Mega Smore,
which is an Olympic distance. Its a one
and a half km swim, a 40 km bike ride,
and a 10 km run. The Mega Smore was
added this year because of the fifth anniversary of the Tri-Smore, and it is the
fifth distance.
Johnson said there have been a few
people interested in it, but she wanted to make sure as the organizer that
she knew what they were doing before
adding on the longer distance.
It just kind of seemed fitting because
we have the Two Bite race, the quarter
and then we have the Half Smore and
the Full Smore, so now were going to
add the Mega Smore which will be our
fifth distance and its our fifth year. The
other fun thing I am doing with that
is if you register by 05,05,15, so May
5, 2015, you get your registration for
$55.15, said Johnson.
The Full Smore is sprint distance,
equaling a 500-meter swim, a 20km
bike and a 5 km run. The Half Smore is
half the distance of the full, the quarter
Smore is half the distance of the Half
Smore, and the Two Bit Smore is for
kids eight-years-old and younger.
Any athlete of any fitness level is encouraged to sign up and participate in
one of the races being offered.
Just do it, remove the barriers come
and have fun, nobody is going to pull

you off the course if you dont meet a

time in a certain part, we dont care if
you have to walk during the run thats
fine, said Johnson.
The idea is to get out and just do it.
The Tri-Smore is only as competitive as
you make it, said Johnson.
Learning tips on how to train and
finding ways to track your progress has
never been easier thanks to the Internet.
One website that I really like for
somebody that has never done it before is beginnertriathlete.com, said
Johnson.
It covers newbies, it covers veterans,
it covers all distances and you can get
plans off of there that are free or you
can upgrade your membership and get
really detailed plans. It is a really good
website for just basic triathlon information.
It may be tough to believe now, but
she strongly believes that anyone who
starts training now would be able to
complete the Full Smore by June, or if
you were dedicated enough it would be
possible to go from couch to Olympic
in the next few months.
I am a mother of seven kids and if
I get in four workouts a week Ive had
a really good week and I can do a Full
Smore off of that. Im no super athlete
but I try to stay active and some of
those plans are a lot more detailed but
they just start you small and you build
and they have a rest week in there,
said Johnson.
It all depends what your goal is, if
youre trying to win a world medal at
it, youre going to have to dedicate a
lot, but if you want to finish you can
still do it.
Registration has been open for a
couple weeks and its never too early to sign up and start training. Like
the Facebook page for updates TriSmore Triathlon, or go online to the
website

Hussar alumni volleyball

tourney returns
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The Hussar alumni volleyball tournament will
take place on Feb. 28.
It is open to anyone who went to the school and
wants to make a team for a day.
Its a high school reunion type thing, where every year the grad class has had a tournament. This
year we have teams from as far back as parents
and the community residents who have graduated
in the 70s and 80s and individual year teams that
go back to 2001, said Cole Kaiser, tournament
organizer.
The tournament is very affordable for everyone,
and the proceeds go to a very worthy cause.
What we do is the entry fee is $50 a team and
that money goes to Kids Up Front, thats an organization in Calgary and one of the girls that graduated from Hussar is actually one of the managers
of the non-profit group, said Kaiser. Every year

Nancy Stairs (403) 934-1625

we have a theme and this years theme is Tight

n Bright. The team that is the best dressed gets
picked by the Kids Up Front group and they get
a prize package supplied by them, and the best
dressed individual and the team that wins the
tournament get a prize.
In 2011, Hussar closed their high school so students were forced to go to Strathmore. However,
Hussar residents who graduated in Strathmore are
allowed to participate in the tournament.
A lot of times they get their friends and people theyve graduated with a lot of kids go to
Strathmore now, so we get some from there who
are coming back, but generally its made up of
core kids in the Hussar area, said Kaiser.
Games will begin at 8:30 a.m. and go right until 7 p.m. followed by the dance at 9 p.m. at the
community hall, which will be $10 and opened to
anyone in the surrounding communities
The deadline is Feb. 23 and you can register by
contacting Kaiser at 403-901-9174.

Rain barrels mandated

on new properties

Page 5

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter
The subject of mandating rain barrels on new developments
was brought forward to council on Jan. 21.
The proposed amendment to the Land Use Bylaw would see
the addition of rain barrels on new residential lots become mandatory.
Cancorp Property Group, developers of Wildflower Ranch, and
Ovation Homes wrote letters of opposition to the amendment.
Curtis Palmer, president of Ovation Homes, was on hand for
the public hearing and spoke about his concerns, which included
the possible risk they pose to the foundation if not installed properly and the freezing of the water in the barrels during the winter.
As a builder we are required to grade each home with positive
drainage away from the foundation, said Palmer.
It is the homeowners responsibility to maintain those grades
after possession, including correcting any settlement. Water in
basements and foundation issues caused by water will not be
warrantied by the builder or the third party warranty provider if
it is determined those grades have not been maintained.
He continued on to say that in his experience with homeowners today, everyones time is valuable and they are looking for low
maintenance in everything they do and he would suggest that the
majority of homeowners wouldnt want a rain barrel, but admits
to not asking them either.
Werner Fischer, with the planning and development department for the town, said that the development permit and building
permit processes try to ensure that positive drainage is provided
away from the building without impacting adjacent properties.
In areas of town where we do not have storm sewer were
compelled to use streets and the lanes because they are an essential part of the overall drainage for the town, said Fischer.
There is an issue with storm water management in certain areas of the town. Many areas downtown, for example, dont have
storm sewer; all of the new areas do have storm water drainage,
however.
I believe certainly in some of areas of the town, especially in
those areas where we dont have storm sewers, rain barrels are
going to be required and were going to have to figure out how
to make them work, said Fischer.
Councillor Rocky Blokland questioned if it will really make that
much of a difference, especially since those barrels will still need
to be emptied, and will likely be drained onto peoples lawns if
they are not used for gardening, or other uses.
Youre reducing the rate of release, thats what this is all about,
said Fischer.
In Fischers opinion making rain barrels mandatory is about
water conservation, stormwater management and water table
management. There are cases where everything has been done
right on a property, and suddenly 20 years later they have water
issues that werent there before due to rising water tables. He
said typically one neighbour adding a sump pump resolves the
situation, but there are often other ways to deal with it. In some
cases extending the downspout further away from the house has
helped some people mitigate the problem.

62 Strathmore novice players had the

opportunity to play pond hockey with
12 players from the Calgary Hitmen
during the Pond Hockey by Enmax
event on Feb. 15 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
Its the first time the event was held in
Strathmore and there were some very
memorable moments for a lot of the
kids who look at the Hitmen as idols.
It means so much to the community
to get out there and play with their
actual heroes. These players look up to
those guys and this is what they probably want to do when they grow up,
said Liz Wilson, Enmax sponsorship coordinator. So being able get on the ice,
shoot out, pass to them, maybe even
stop a goal, its amazing to see those
moments.
We went through the novice sponsorships to pick the teams that we do
pond hockey with each season so we
do a rotation.
Wilson added that she would love to
bring the event back to Strathmore with
a different team next time, with the possibility of Flames being the next one.

Strathmore Minor Hockey Association

board member Cory Flett was ecstatic
about the presence of the Hitmen players and how important the communication was with the young players.
The program that Enmax started
with us last year, where they provide
us with $1,000 for each (novice) team
to get a track suits for every kid, thats
where it started. This year they did
same thing, then Airdrie cancelled on
them, they couldnt get ice and said
hey do you want this Hitmen opportunity and I said absolutely, said Flett.
I wasnt sure how it was going to go
over, but the stands were packed, the
parents were excited, the brothers and
sisters had a great time. It was a great
opportunity for Strathmore.
First-year Hitmen centre Tyrell
Draude thought skating with the young
kids was a great way to interact with the
players that support the team.
It was a lot of fun. I grew up in Saskatoon and watching the Blades was
cool, said Draude. I know what its
like skating with the older players and
its a pretty cool feeling. Were people
that they look up to and we were in
their shoes at one time, so its good to
(give back).

Wheatland Inline Hockey association is rolling into another season and

is looking for more players this campaign.
President Lynne Kozma has been
pleasantly surprised with the increased
numbers because of players being organized into their own age groups this
season.
I hoping to hit the 100 player mark
this year at least, if not a little better, I
was at 99 last year. Were opening it up
to more competitive (as) there seems
to be interest, but again its floor time
so we have to see how that all goes,
said Kozma. I know our numbers are
better too because were now playing

my big year of doing that, like we had
11 to 15-year-olds, whereas last year
were exact ages.
The association also took part in the

I was disappointed in REVS this
year, I could not believe the lack of
turnout, she said. Last year I was on
my own and I was swamped and this
year, there was hardly anyone there.
I like REVS because I take my book

Swan on a curling quest

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Harvey Station, New Brunswicks

own Rob Swan is on a very dedicated
quest with wanting to do 100 curling
rinks in 100 clubs across the country in
hopes of raising funds in support of his
hometown club.
When he goes to the curling rinks
around the country, Swan will join a
team at the club and play a game.
Last year somebody from my hometown curling club said that they have
to start raising some money because
renovations have to be done to our
club, said Swan. Our club is not in terrible shape, its opened, it exists and it
runs, but it needs some renovations. I
thought rather than opening my pocket, Id make them work for it, so I go
out curling and most of the members
go out and try to get a sponsorship for
me to go curling.
The main goal is to raise funds for
the curling club and to have fun getting
people to enjoy the sport again.
It is to raise money for the club and
were slowly doing that, number two
was to raise awareness of the sport,
said Swan. The sport has taken a turn
for the worse in the last eight to 10
years, memberships have gone down
all over the board across the country
(and) clubs have closed.
Swan wanted to let everyone know
that anyone can curl and you do not
have to be an athlete to participate.
If I can get out there and show people that you dont have to be a primetime athlete to curl, that someone from
everyday walk of life can get out there

and curl and have fun, said Swan.

Strathmore is going to be a stop on
his tour, as his main focus is to hit the
smaller communities when he is not at
the Brier in Calgary,
I am trying to hit as many rural communities as I can and not saying that
Strathmore is a rural community but
when Im going to be there during the
Brier, a lot of my games for the Calgary
clubs will be between games I will be
attending, said Swan. The days Im
not at the Brier, Im trying to get out
to as many rural communities as I can
because right after Strathmore I go to
Milo.
He began his tour back in October in
Winnipeg because of it being a city that
knows their curling.
I thought of it growing up as the
curling capital of Canada, you had more
curling champions there than you can
shake a stick at. I just hop scotched all
over the country because I work in Alberta, said Swan. I just thought where
do I want to curl this year and Id pick
a spot.
During his tour, he does not actively
go out looking for money and would
rather go out and look for a game.
A lot of clubs have donated quite
handsomely, but I dont go looking for
the money, said Swan.
He will be at the Strathmore Curling
Club on Feb. 23 (1 p.m.) for a game
with a team.
If people are interested in donating
to towards the journey and the Harvey Station club, you can log onto their
Facebook page Curling Across the Nation and there are ways through there
to give money.

Times Reporter

The UFA Bisons finished the regular season on
high note with a pair of 3-2 wins over the Red Deer
Chiefs on Feb. 13 and the Calgary Flames on Feb.
15.
Head coach Dan MacDonald liked what he saw
from his team and their ability to dictate the games.
(The Chiefs) came hard at us in the first period
and we weathered that storm and then we played
good after that. We played everybody and (got)
everyone ready for the playoffs, said MacDonald.
We just upped our game ourselves and we won the
game because of it.
Cole Noble, Sebastien Kilcommons and Will Conley scored in the win against the Chiefs.
The game against the Flames proved to be one
where there was a lack of capitalizing on chances.
We couldve scored lots of goals and just didnt.
We got to get back to work bearing down, so that
were really ready (for playoffs), said MacDonald.
It was a tough game for us, theres nothing we can
do, we couldnt go any higher than third and they
were trying to get into fourth and playing a different style game than we were.
He really felt that the boys played two solid games
on special teams, which is becoming a strength.
Our power play is working really well right
now and our penalty kill is really good too, said
MacDonald. We dont have many concerns when
they have a power play, we can kill penalties pretty
good.
Conley, Markus Lavallee and Zachary Cox supplied the offence versus the Flames.
The other positive is our goalies are playing well
this time of year, our goals against since December
has been very good.
The Bisons will open up the post season against
the same Flames team starting on Feb. 19 at Strathmore Family Centre at 7 p.m.
Weve got to play well, theyve got some real
good players and their goaltender is descent so we
have to get lots of traffic in front of the net, said
MacDonald. The big thing for us is we have to finish our checks.
MacDonald admits if they are to be successful,
they have to move the puck quickly up the ice and
play at a high level.
Weve had it pretty easy the last two games in
the sense that we played great but we werent at
our best (we have to) do the little things better,
said MacDonald.
Game 2 is set for Saturday, Feb. 21 (12:15 p.m.) at
the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary. Game 3,
if necessary, will be the next day at the Strathmore

History is made
The Strathmore Wheatland Kings
swept their way through the
first round of HJHL playoffs last
weekend by beating the Medicine Hat Cubs two games to
zero in the best of three series.
The Kings took the first game in
Medicine Hat 4-2 on Friday the
13th and the second at the Family Centre on Valentines Day by a
score of 2-1. This is a milestone
for the Kings as it is the first time
in franchise history they have
played through to the second
round of playoff hockey.

Thank you.

Kings get first

ever series win

JUSTIN SEWARD

Times Reporter

Wheatland Kings head coach Jeremy
Blumes could not have felt more rewarded than he did after his team swept
their first round series with the Medicine Hat Cubs this past weekend.
The Kings took Game 1 with a 4-2
win on Feb. 13 in Medicine Hat and
won 2-1 in Game 2 on home ice the
following day. He is the first coach in
franchise history to win a playoff series.
Its rewarding, obviously there has
been lots of ups and downs this season but I think that youre seeing guys
starting to play for one another, putting
the team first and playing disciplined,
its good to see, said Blumes. You definitely noticed a difference in the dressing room and I see us growing and getting better.
The difference in the series was having everyone working hard and contributing in one way or another on the ice.
Theres a couple of things number
one our goaltending was outstanding.
Number two, I think you really saw a
difference in the two teams in terms
of our depth down the middle, said
Blumes. I think (Brayden) Beckleys
line did a great job shutting down. Then
you have Kirby (Ruzesky), Calvin Gordon, Beckley and Jay Manning 65 per
cent (combined) on faceoffs. I thought
they did a real good job down low in

Doug Taylor Photos

our zone.
The third factor was shot blocking, I
saw a real commitment of getting in the
shooting lanes and sacrificing the body
for the greater good.
The Kings will now move on to face
the Coaldale Copperheads in Round 2
and know that they will have to stay focused and disciplined if they want to
win the seven game series.
I think a lot of people would say
were underdogs going into the series.
Were fine with that its not going to
be the Kings being happy to be in the
South Division semi-final, said Blumes.
We see what were capable of when we
put our mind to it and approach the series against Coaldale with passion, discipline and focus.
The boys know that they have to keep
up their compete level as it will be a
lengthy seven game series.
Its going to be a battle, when youre
playing seven games in 10 days, its
going to be a war and the team thats
better conditioned and taking care of
things away from the rink, Im going to
like our chances, said Blumes.
Game 2 versus the Cubs saw one of
the higher attendances of the season,
and the Kings want the crowds to keep
coming out throughout the postseason.
Round 2 began Feb. 18 in Coaldale
(result not available as of press time)
with Game 2 will be back in Strathmore
on Feb. 20 at 8 p.m.

Chiefs firing on all cylinders

JUSTIN SEWARD

Times Reporter

The Wheatland Chiefs fired 100 pucks
at the Cranbrook Knights goaltender on
Feb. 13 on home ice and managed to
humiliate them 18-1.
They had period leads of 4-1, 13-1
and added 5 in the third on a night that
could not have ended any faster.
Jayse Wilson led the onslaught with
four goals, Ryan Skytt had a hat trick,
while Chris Rebeyka and Jason Hobson
added two apiece. Brad Hendricks, Matt
Halkovic, Liam Rycroft, Quinton Peplinski, Jayden Smith, James Farmer and Cole
Busslinger rounded out the offence with
one each,
Head coach Devin Olson was glad the
boys put that one behind them quickly
because they faced a much stiffer opponent in the North Division-leading Red
Deer Chiefs.
The local midget double-A had to earn
the win with a last minute power play
empty netter to seal the victory 3-2 on
Feb. 15.
It was good that we bounced back
from (Fridays) game. You can get too
many bad habits in a game like that.
Then come in and play the top team in
the league, it was a playoff type game
and the boys showed up tonight, said
Olson.
The boys got a taste of a playoff atmosphere and how it is to win.
The Chiefs were able to take the body
to Red Deer and use their size to their
advantage but played a comparable style
to them.
They werent a big team, so the small
ice is good, we got some big bodies
we can throw around and wear teams
down, said Olson.
They had three lines that work hard.
Theyve been on a role winning 22
straight games, theyre on kind of high
so this is good to have that against them.
Hobson, Smith and Alex Biletsky
scored in the win.
The Chiefs got a bye in the first round
and will begin round 2 at home on the
Feb. 27 weekend.
BRAVES FINISH STRONG
The Wheatland Braves made a statement heading into the postseason with a
9-2 win over Bow Valley on Feb. 13 and
a 14-0 win in Medicine Hat on Feb. 15.
The local peewee double-A team tied
Olds for first, but based on a tiebreaker
will take the first seed heading into the
playoffs.
Kyle Crnkovic netted three, while Nolan Bailey, Kyle Bray, Max Schafer, Bryce
Benfield, Mo Hakim and Tristan Zandee
rounded out the scoring against Bow
Valley.
In the drubbing of Medicine Hat, it
was Hakim with the hat trick, while Bray,
Zandee and Schafer had two. Crnkovic,
Benfield, Max Kathol, Adam Kirkpatrick

and Brayden Kapty also scored in the big

win.
Meanwhile, the local peewee team is
off to provincials with a 7-0 win over the
same Bow Valley team on Feb. 16 at the
Strathmore Family Centre.
Provincials will take place in Olds from
March 19-22.
WARRIORS PLAYOFF READY
Cody Browns Wheatland Warriors
played a tough stretch of hockey as they
ended off the season with three games in
three nights.
They began the weekend with a 3-3 tie
in Hussar on Feb. 13 against the Foothills
Bisons, and then on Feb. 14 they beat the
Red Deer Steel Kings 5-0 in Strathmore;
before capping it off with a 3-2 win on
the road against the Red Deer Ramada.
Brown was impressed with his teams
effort with that much hockey in that
short of time.
It was a pretty good weekend really,
kind of just kept getting better as the
games went on, which is tough when
youre playing that much hockey in that
short of time. But by Sunday against Red
Deer we finished off pretty decent, said
Brown.
We played pretty darn close to playing 60 minutes of good hockey so it was
a good game to end it off, get a win and
good game to start preparing for play-

Weve said it all year, as long as were

You cant take a game off, youve

to take a run at things and thats what
were trying to instill in the guys, that
you cant take anything for granted
whether its a game or a shift.
He added that if the boys are moving

Friday afternoon started the tournament for Strathmore seeing the Ice take

team that know each other well. Knowing each other well and seeing the girls
anticipate each others moves; the game
was a nail-biter with no team taking
the lead for very long. With the buzzer

score of 5-4.
Not much time to rest and regroup,

Saturday was a new day, which
brought the Ice to the rink to play their
third game of round robin play. With
a 1-1 record, the girls were focused on
a win to make it into the gold medal
game. That showed on the ice, and a
well-played match against the Beaumont Benders seen the Strathmore Ice
victors 10-8 and Ice were going to the

Spartans showing potential

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Spartans high school
boys basketball team has been showing
tremendous improvement throughout
the season and into their home tournament on Feb. 13-14.
The Spartans beat Drumheller to finish third in the tournament.
Head coach Kyle Larson liked what
he saw from the boys throughout the
games.
We play up-tempo basketball and
we are certainly at our very best when
we were pressing and running out on
the fast break, said Larson. Our overall team effort has been excellent and
the boys seem to be improving every
time we play.
He felt that the boys delivered a very
high competition level against province-ranked teams.
The game against Ponoka, although
a loss, was a positive. Ponoka is a provincially ranked team and to lose by
only seven (59-52) was a very good
showing, said Larson. It was a game
that we had the lead for a lot of and
have really started to show how good
of a squad we can be.
The Spartans have faired well in their
tournaments so far this season and
have held their own in each game.

The season has been a very good

one, the boys have fared quite well in
the tournaments that we have been at,
playing in the final or consolation final
in all of them, said Larson. We have
good work ethic and are very committed as a group. The boys are working
hard and have been rewarded for their
efforts this season.
One strength that the boys have been
able to use well is their size in the offensive zone.
Despite not having a true 65 type
of post player, we have competed very
well with our size inside, said Larson.
The boys are tenacious and have rebounded very well as a team. It has
been a pleasant surprise, but also something we are going to need to continue
to work at.
A weakness that could be improved
upon is earning half court, as there
does not seem to be the same tenacity
compared to other areas of their game.
We still need to focus on our half
court defense, if we arent pressing we
just dont seem to have the same jump,
said Larson. Our ball movement and
passing continues to be another spot
that we need to work on and strengthen.
He also added that their aggressive
style and passion has played a pivotal
role in the teams success.

Katharine Elizabeth Wyndham Betty was granted her angel wings on

Sunday, February 8th, 2015, three
weeks shy of her 88th birthday. Betty was born
February 26, 1927, in Victoria, British Columbia, to
George & Alice (Miller) Verdun & adopted by Henry
& Enid (Allen) Moss. She married the love of her
life, Bill William Dummer Powell Wyndham and
lived in Carseland, Alberta in the Bow River Valley on the land settled by Bills Great Grandfather
Colonel Alfred Wyndham. Simply put Mom loved life
and made good on everything she experienced, she
was always smiling. She loved to travel, including
Egypt, Australia, Sri Lanka and Alaska. She enjoyed
volunteering in PB Club, CFO (Camps Farthest Out),
ACW, Choir, Alter Guild, palliative & pastoral care to
name most of her activities. Mom loved animals,
taking on sheep farming when Dad was working on
the road as an ROP inspector. Lots of chickens and
eggs, a handful of beef calves and milking goats
and looking after horses she would never ride. Not
bad at all for a city girl, Im sure we had the healthiest flock of sheep in the country as her care was
impeccable! She was passionate about family genealogy and liked gardening, collecting coins and
stamps, and most of all, she cherished her children
and grandchildren and her many friends.
She is lovingly remembered by daughter-in-law,
Patricia Wyndham; son, Jack Wyndham of Strathmore, AB; daughter, Carolynn (Ronald) Marohn of
Waldersee, MB; 6 grandchildren, Carson (Lindsay) of Spruce Grove, AB, Colin Wyndham, Lance
(Kim) of Stonewall, MB, Tyler (Blu Peckford) of Ft.
McMurray, AB, Erin (Pat) Rice of Ft McMurray, AB
and Brianna Marohn of Neepawa, MB; and 10 great
grandchildren, Paul, Lydia, Lucas, Brooklyn, Ireland,
Brock William, Katherine Elizabeth, Chance Peckford, Lillie and Hunter.
Katharine was predeceased by her son, Paul in
2004 and her husband, Bill in 2007. Thank You to
Dr. Piesas and staff of Strathmore, AB for your years
of tender loving care. To Bayshore and Home Support, your care & hugs. Thank you Dr. Moolman and
staff of Bassano for your compassion and efforts in
Moms short battle. A message Mom wrote for her
family & friends, Thank you for loving me and supporting me in the good things we shared together.
Moms faith and trust in knowing her Lord was absolute, be joyous in the knowledge she is happy.
We invite you to join us in a Celebration of Katharines Life at St. Michaels and All Angels, 237 First
Avenue, Strathmore, AB on Friday, April 24, 2015
at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, Betty had requested
that memorial donations may be made in her name
to St. Michael and All Angels Anglican Church, 237
First Ave., Strathmore, AB, T1P1B3. Messages of
condolence may be left for the family at www.myalternatives.ca.
