theshipisinstalledwithanewsewagetreatplantwhichneedstobestoppedatregularintervalof
timeforimprovingitsperformanceandmaintenanceprocedures.Belowarethepointsthatneedto
befollowedforstartingasewagetreatmentplant.
1.Makesureifanymaintenanceiscarriedoutonthesewagetreatmentsystem,alltheopenings
havebeenclosedproperlybeforestarting.
2.Thesewageplantisbefilledwithfreshwaterinsidethechamber.
3.Atthisstage,therearenoaerobicbacteriainsidethechamber,butthesewagehasstarted
comingtotheplant.Thus,inordertoincreaseefficiencyandstartingrateoftheplantbiopacis
addedtotheplantbyflushingtheamountspecifiedinthemanual.Thisbiopacismixedwith
warmwaterwhichhelpsingrowthofthesebacteriaandalsoefficientfunctioningoftheplant.
4.Ifthebiopacisnotadded,theplantmighttakeupto5to7daystobecompletelyfunctional.
However,withthebiopacitbecomesfunctionalwithin24hours.
5.Starttheaircompressororopentheairvalveasperthedesignoftheplant.Thepressureis
maintainedasperthemanual.Generally0.30.4bars.

6.Openthesewageoverboardvalveandcloseholdingtankvalvewhentheshipisoutof
restrictedwaters.
7.Theplantiscontinuouslymonitoredandcheckedfortheflowthroughthetransparentplastic
tubes.
8.Thesampleistakenforcheckingforsuspendedsolidsandchlorinecontent.
Stoppingoftheplant
Stoppingofthesewagetreatmentplantisgenerallydoneeitherbeforeenteringthedrydockorin
casesomemaintenancehastobecarriedoutinsidethetreatmentplant.
1.Forstoppingthesystem,closetheinletvalvetothesewageplantandclosetheoverboardvalve
andletthesewagegooverboard.
2.Emptyallthethreechambersoftheplanti.e.aeration,settlingandchlorinationchambers.Ifthe
chambersarenotemptied,itwillleadtogrowthofanaerobicbacteriawhichformsthetoxicH2S
gas.
3.Ifentryhastobemadeinsidethetank,thelatershouldbecheckedforhydrogensulphidegas
H2Swiththehelpofdragortubebytakingacontinuoussamplefromtheplant.Entryismadewith
thehelpofmaskandrubberglovesshouldbeputon.
