Access to Internet offers education, communication
and knowledge to everyone with a dial-up.
The Internet creates the possibility for anyone,
regardless of class, gender or citizenship, to
publish a selfie or get a degree. But the freedom the
net initially offered is getting more restricted and
controlled by the biggest multinational corporations.
Massive amounts of user data is collected by both
corporations and governments and are used in ways
unknown to citizens.

/SNEGO is building blocks that adults and children alike can play
with without focusing on getting a specific result or something
figurative. There are no rules and no right or wrong usage. Each
piece is unique. Play, stack, build and balance. /SNEGO is made
of birch, cherry, poplar and pine as well as various donated and
dumpster dived wood.
Coloured with blueberry, wine, red cabbage, turmeric, beetroot,
lingonberry and red onion peel. A coating with beeswax and olive
oil is applied to make the colour resistant.

This project began with a two-week long stay in Houston, Texas,
US with research trips to Johnson Space Center and inspiring
lectures to get insight in the challenges a trip to Mars poses.
I decided to investigate the potential psychological effect on
astronauts during long term expeditions.
Many of the crew of ISS describe a profound experience when they
look at Earth from space and psychological studies show that long
term residence in space get somewhat easier with this connection
to Earth. A mission to Mars would be longer than any space mission
in history, going far into space with delayed communication and
eventually no visual contact with Earth.

I was astounded at how much I had underestimated the


strain of living cut off from the world in an otherworldly

The pressure that astronauts deal with is astronomic.
Both astronauts and their family have a pressure to
behave in a certain way, living their lives that a public
opinion can approve of. Not only this, but they have
to manage their work flawlessly. Some argue that the
case of Lisa Nowak was partially a result of how NASA
presents the astronauts as heroes, thus creating a huge
social pressure.
In some crew constellations a macho atmosphere
have been known to occur. Visiting NASA I also got the
impression that some astronauts think that it is not a
problem to adapt to life in space and some astronauts
actively also try to hide the pure physical reaction of
space sickness and tease those who dont.

Even if people have been able to complete long term


mission, not without incidents as demonstrated, missions
for 30 months are likely to get behavioural problems of
higher magnitude. For astronauts to be able to handle
such a mission psychologically, I think that there has to
be a change in how NASA train their candidates.

During Flight Incidents - Stories from Space


1976 Soyuz 21
The crew was brought home early after the cosmonauts complained of a pungent odor. No source for this odor was ever found, nor did other crews smell
it. The crew had not been getting along and the oder may have been an hallucination.
1982 Salyut 7
Reports of somatizing by cosmonaut Valentin Lebedev.
1984 Salyut 7
The crew started to group hallucinate, claiming to see a brilliant orange
cloud surrounding the station. A Russian newspaper confirmed that the cosmonauts officially reported the group hallucination, which was attributed to
pressure, temperature fluctuations and shortage of oxygen to the brain.
1985 Soyuz T-14
The crew was brought home after 65 days because cosmonaut Vladimir Vasyutin complained that he had a prostate infection. Doctors later believed that the
problem was partly psychological.
1987 Soyuz TM-2
The mission was cut short after an otherwise healthy cosmonaut experienced a
cardiac arrhythmia that required medication after being exposed to sustained
stresses related to on-board equipment failure.
Other psychosomatic reactions include complaints of toothaches after dreams
of tooth infection.
One employee with NASA told me a story of a scientist, working with an experiment in space, getting suicidal after the experiment had failed, thereby
putting the whole crew in danger.

For astronauts to be able to handle a Mars mission, NASA should


consider a change of how they train their astronauts and give more
tools for handling emotions in space.
To lessen the psychological pressure of living up to the ideal of
being a superhuman, my suggestions is to encourage astronauts to
do what in a macho atmosphere considers being not macho
Crying eases the psychological pressure and gives several positive
side effects such as the release of hormones and toxins from the
body
Crying in space is crying without tears falling down, due to lack of
gravity. Therefore the action creates a more uncomfortable experience with the tears clinging to the eyes in a big mass.

The crying mission is a crying-aid in an absorptive material aimed


for astronauts on long-duration flights in space. It is meant to encourage
crying and acceptance of emotions.

Were slowly coming to suspect that the space


were traveling through is of a different kind
from what we thought whenever the word space
was decked out by our fantasies on Earth.
Were coming to suspect now that our drift
is even deeper than we first believed,
that knowledge is a blue naivete
which with the insight needed to the propose
assumed by the Mystery to have a structure.
We now suspect that what we say is space
and glassy-clear around Aniaras hull
is spirit, everlasting and impalpable,
that we are lost in spiritual seas.

BUGS AS FOOD: HUMANS BITE BACK


The project was made in a short course with the theme of aesthetics and animals. It was realised with a recipe for cookies based on
crickets and an instructional video. Our theory was that by showing
the process behind cooking with insects, the concept would cease
being dramatic and become acceptable in a westerner eyes.
Before humans had tools insects represented an important part of
our diet. With an extra 3 billion people estimated to be sharing the
planet with us by 2050 - farmland and resources for raising livestock will not be enough.
Insects can be an alternative and more sufficient source for protein
than livestock meat.

During my time in Istanbul I often came across the
concept of fortune telling rabbits on the streets. It is very
common all over Turkey for people to let a rabbit tell them
their fortune. The scenario is usually the following. Three
or four rabbits and one box which contains several notes
with short sentences written on them. One of the rabbits
goes into the box and chooses one paper note. What is
written is the future for the person reading it.

The Rabbit of Fortune was the outcome of a workshop with Istanbul


Technical University, Eindhoven University of Technology and the
University College of Art and Design Sint-Lukas. The workshop
was focused on interpreting Turkish culture in Eindhoven, Bryssels
and Istanbul. The workshop was finalized with an interactive
exhibition.

Design student and a Cognitive Science student working
with SSRS-Swedish Sea Rescue Society. Using methods
from industrial design and cognitive science together with
applying dynamic navigation as navigation method we
created a pedagogical example of how to design a bridge
deck for high speed rescue boats

The sphere analysis helped us to identify what tools is used by whom and
their individual importance in relation
to how physical close they should be to
the one using them. We plotted out the
tools in a live scale mockup of a deck
bridge and tested different layouts for
them.

ANALYSIS
These are plots of the four functions we
deemed important for the layout. With the
help of function analysis and the reality
lab we created we observed how information tend to cluster when changing the
necessary function. Different functions
will create different extreme scenarios of
how to organize all the tools. Since we
wanted a more overall picture where all
functions are important we combined all
the plots and made a direct translation
to 3D where the plots got represented by
mass.

We wanted to see beyond the technical


limitations of today. This design suggests
a more abstract approach to fit the
bridge deck to the principles of dynamic
navigation. The end suggestion is not the
renderings but more the methods behind
them and should be thought of as a
pedagogical example of how to approach
the task of building new rescue boats.

Encourage or discourage creativity in a user?
The project was about the choice a user is presented
with when assembling parts that hopefully will become
furniture.
The user is presented with instructions impossible to follow
without getting a nervous breakdown.
Mrklig is encouraging or discouraging the user to play with
constellations where the parts does not fit perfectly and
where that is OK.

The project is investigating public buoys in Sweden and
how they are supposed to be used in an emergency.
It came to my attention that most common public buoy
in Sweden isnt following the SOLAS (The International
Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea) guidelines and that
the buoy is complicated to handle.

User tests
In stressed situations the ability to read and follow
instructions is very difficult. Optimally, if the
product is intuitive to use, it should be possible
to use it in a wrong manner. User tests with the
existing lifebuoy revealed that users usually do
not use the buoy in the way it is intended to, to be
effective. This insight paved the way for creating a
intuitive buoy where the risk of misuse decreased.

Design suggestion
The wire inside the handle is attached to the buoy
itself and the handle is mounted on the board.
The board have two upper hooks for mounting the
buoy. It also have two clamping brackets for the
handle. It is not possible to dismount the buoy
without forcing the user to separate the handle
from the buoy, thus making it ready to use in a
correct fashion. The design is also made to make
it easier to throw and tow. It also takes SOLASs
recomendations into consideration.
