Name: Courtney Kuhn

Date: 2/10/15

Materials needed: Standard of Excellence blue book (scales), Coast Guards March, Chant
Rituals
Standards:
Strand 1 Concept 2 PO 308: playing expressively, on pitch, in rhythm, with
appropriate articulation, dynamics, phrasing, and tempo.
Strand 1 Concept 2: playing exercises/music from memory at appropriate level
(scales)
Strand 1 Concept 2 PO 314: responding to conductors cues (e.g., style, expression,
part cueing).
Strand 1 Concept 2: PO 221: recognizing intonation within the ensemble.
Strand 1 concept 5: PO 205: using appropriate terminology to describe and explain
music encountered in the repertoire.
Objectives and assessment:
Objective(s)/Assessment:
Scales: Students will play several major scales and will improve with note accuracy, steady tempo,
and fingers will move evenly. Students will play the whole note at the end of the scale pattern in
tune, and they will demonstrate their understanding of pitch by verbally expressing the concept
in class. They will also demonstrate their listening skills by playing the last note of the scale
pattern more in tune.
Coast Guards March: students will review the march by playing through it at an appropriate tempo
with short style and noticeable dynamic changes
Chant Rituals: students will examine the beginning of Chant Rituals and begin to play correct
notes and rhythms (specifically the flute/clarinet countermelody and the woodwind ostinatos.)
They will become more aware of the other parts being played around the ensemble and will begin
to provide feedback about group dynamics, rhythmic mistakes, and their individual performance.
Personal objective: Be very deliberate with conducting and be fully aware of
entrances so that I am
able to identify mistakes with notes and rhythms and correct them immediately.

Introduction: How are we doing today? (students answer) Lets warm up with some scales.
Open your blue book to the scales page and turn your stands around!
Procedure:
Warm Up: Major Scales one octave, very clean with even articulation
Scales Game: focus on intonation, articulation, and student listening skills
Run through Coast Guards March give quick feedback
Chant Rituals: A section (beginning slowly)
- communicate objectives: students scan the part for details such as
dynamics, rhythms, etc.

Run through beginning section: students play through while teacher

evaluates the weakness (counting, dynamics, etc.)
Notes/Rhythms
metronome=quarter note (make sure students know this)
play through from beginning with metronome on count carefully!
Ask students: where did this fall apart? Where should we begin?
Troubleshoot: flute eighth notes m.38 - careful with counting, dynamics
Dynamics
Ask students: were we doing the dynamics?
Start at m. 33 small section
Play through Chant Rituals from beginning until Slowly and make sure
students are staying together and can play this piece
Verbal feedback about run-through: students staying together (remind
them about prior feedback saxophones drop jaw on high E)

** Differentiated Instruction:
1. In scales game, clarinet players can play one octave because the F scale is
very technically
challenging.
2. Clarinets struggle with technique more than other instruments, so they do
not have to turn their stands around right away during the scales quiz.
3. At m. 33, Flutes will need more repetitions to play their part correctly
because they have a more challenging part, rhythmically
Closure:
Give students specific verbal feedback about progress and remind students to
incorporate advice from a
previous lesson clarinets pushing out low notes on ostinatos and saxophones
dropping jaw on the high
E. Move on to next section: slowly
