We will visit The National Archives to undertake a personal study of your choosing. The National
Archives are the archives of the British Government covering a thousand years of history. You
will research any topic you like, using original documents from the past. As part of this you will
learn how to handle original documents and you work at your own pace, following any leads that
interest you. This will be an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the workings of the
British government as well as to work as historians and see the past for yourself on your terms.
Many students go on to use the research they have done as a basis for an extended project
qualification
*Possible research areas include: The Suffragettes, Margaret Thatcher, Immigration to Britain
1950s & 1960s, Henry VIII, Mary I, Elizabeth I, The Chartists, Slavery, Propaganda in the World
War II, The Cold War, UFOs, Jack the Ripper, previous census records, military histories, Civil
Rights, English Civil War, Easter Rising, The IRA and Sinn Fein, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Enoch
Powell, Idi Amin, JFK. Basically any events, person or topics from the past that interests you.
Skills to be Developed
Students will undertake a piece of research of their choosing and become experts in this
topic. They will produce a presentation to show the rest of their group when we return to
Esher. They will demonstrate what they have learnt and consider how they could use
this further.
They will gain skills in handling original documents from the past that might well be
hundreds of years old. This will give them an insight into conservation and preservation
of historical manuscripts and documents. They will also gain an understanding of
political workings as the documents are Government Documents.
Students will gain experience in the work of Historians in sifting through original
documents from the past that have not been pre-selected. They will work at their own
pace and follow leads of their choosing. This will give students a taste of university level
research as well as setting the grounds for a possible EPQ. This experience can also be
used on their UCAS statements, particularly if applying for History at degree level.

The aim of this trip is to gain a clear understanding of Renaissance art and architecture. We will
learn through
lectures, discussion, drawing (no artistic skills necessary for History students you will be
exploring features such as perspective!) and physical exploration of how Renaissance artists and
architects went beyond anything previously attempted in their quest to go beyond the Greek and
Roman civilisations .
Skills To Be Developed
While in Florence, students explored the history and social contexts of significant art and
architectural works. They discussed and analysed examples, making notes and drawings to
understand their meaning and stylistic evolution. The overall aim of the trip was to develop an
understanding of Renaissance values as expressed through buildings and artefacts. Students
worked in groups, and were autonomous at times, enabling them to explore Italian culture more
broadly, including language skills and the importance of religion in society.
