WASTE OIL REFINING

27.000 mtons/year
Job No:7237.500.163

The biggest challenge to used oil refining has been removing contaminants and additives from used
oil. There are existing processes to remove these materials, but these methods requiring high capital
and operating costs. Therefore, profitable used oil refining has not become widespread.
However, after years of research and development, Meglobloil ant its Licence Partner of the United
States has completed a used oil refinery technology that will revolutionize the oil recycling industry.
Meglobaloil's technology recycles used lubricating oil to its highest and best use--clean
lubricating oil. Meglobaloil's patented technology reduces the cost of building refineries to a
fraction of the cost of traditional used oil refineries. In addition, operating costs are lower, and
the end product, with a mild finishing step, has the same quality as virgin lube stock.

Revolutionary Technology-Compare
Meglobaloil's technology is distinct among the many technologies available in the world. Existing
technologies generally use a combination of heat and pressure to remove contaminants.
Meglobaloil's solvent extraction system operates without extensive heat or pressure. Existing
technologies require huge capital costs. Meglobaloil used oil refineries can be built for roughly 30 40 percent less than traditional technologies. Larger capital costs and higher collection volumes are
needed by other technologies just to break even. Meglobaloil's technology requires as few as 27,000
tonnes per year to operate. A smaller scale Meglobaloil facility is possible, depending on local
circumstances.
Because of its unique solvent extraction system, the Meglobaloil Process eliminates the need for
thin-film evaporators as well as the very expensive hydrotreating step.

In Meglobaloil's process, water, additives and contaminants are removed at ambient conditions,
which then allow the resulting oil to be handled with traditional distillation equipment.

How the Process Works

A flow Diagram illustrates the configuration of the Meglobaloil Process. First, raw used lube oil is
mixed with a solvent. This solvent has distinct properties for recycling used oil because it has a high
selectivity of hydrocarbons and rejects metals and other contaminants. The metals and other
contaminants are retained in an asphalt residuum.
The extraction process takes place at ambient conditions, which eliminates coking and corrosion that
accompany traditional used oil distillation processes.
The oil/solvent mixture is pumped to the solvent stripper where the solvent is removed from the oil,
and then condensed and reused. The oil is then flashed at atmospheric pressure to remove the light
hydrocarbons, and the remaining oil is then distilled in a vacuum tower, resulting in high quality base
oil lube stock, diesel, and bottoms products.
The residuum/water mixture is transferred to the asphalt blending vessel where it is combined with
tower bottoms from the vacuum distillation column. The water is then removed and the resulting
mixture can be sold as flux for roofing asphalt or as an asphalt modifier for paving asphalt.
Process is given below step by step for better understanding.

1. REFINERY SECTION PROCESS DESCRIPTION

FEED PREHEATING SOLVENT MIXING
Raw waste oil feed (1) is mixed with propane (2). The mixture is than sent to the solvent mixing
and extraction vessel. (3)
SOLVENT MIXING EXTRACTION
The waste oil propane mixture is than subjected to the patented process where most of the
additive package, water and other insolubles are separated from propane/base oil mixture.
SEPARATION
The solids, water and propane oil mixture then enter the separator (4) where the solids and water
settle to the bottom of the vessel and the propane/oil mixture leaves the top of the separator to
the surge vessel (5). The surge vessel allows the process to the decouple the extraction phase of
the process from the subsequent propane recovery and distillation section.
SOLVENT RECOVERY
The solvent oil mixture is then pumped through a series of heat exchangers raising temperature
enough to vaporize the propane in the solvent flash drum (6). The propane is vaporized at a
pressure high enough to allow the propane to be recondensed propane is then returned to the
solvent vessel (2) to be reused with the incoming oil.
LIGHT END STRIPPING
The depropaneted oil is then moved to the gasoline stripper (7) where the last percentage of the
propane is removed and the low boiling hydrocarbons are removed. This vessel operates close to
the atmospheric pressure which requires the propane removed here to be compressed in the
vapor recovery unit (8) before it can be condensed and returned to the solvent vessel (2).

VACUUM DISTILLATION
The flash adjusted oil is then sent to a traditional Vacuum Distillation Unit (9). This unit used
structured packing to provide the vapor liquid contact. The structured packing can be used ,
because the contaminated which cause coking and corrosion have been removed in the
extraction and separation stages. The vacuum is produced with a mechanical vacuum pump thus
keeping the waste generation at the lowest possible level.

ASPHALT PRODUCTION
The process makes a superior asphalt modifier from the waste products which has a higher than
usual value in the US. This material enhances the temperature characteristics of the final asphalt
product. The product is made by combining the bottoms from the vacuum unit (9) with the solids
from the separator (4). The water vapor is condensed and then sent to the waste water treatment
area.

PRODUCT FINISHING
This process produces a single untreated base oil. An additional distillation column can be added
depending upon the purchase base oil product needs.
Following, a clay finishing step can be utilized to clarify and stabilize the base oil. Of Course, a
hydrotreaing finishing step is utilized if the purchase so desires.
Typical yield from our patented process is as follows:

Operating Costs
The table below shows operating costs based on a unit processing 27,000 tonnes per year of waste
oil. The labor cost is based on two operators working 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. The labor cost is
fixed and is therefore lower for units with greater capacity and higher for units with lower capacity.
The costs do not include a clay finishing step.

Product Quality
Meglobaloil's process effectively removes the contaminants from used oil and returns clean base oil
that can then be used in one of three applications: a base lube oil, a base industrial oil or a cleanburning industrial fuel. Tests on this base oil have shown that used oil processed with Meglobaloil's
technology meets industry standards and has the same quality as virgin lube oil.

The contaminants, such as dirt, lead, arsenic and other environmentally harmful metals and
chemicals, removed from the used oil are chemically bound in a residuum that can be safely used as
an asphalt modifier. Tests on this residuum show that when the residuum is used as an asphalt
modifier, the residuum improves the quality of the asphalt, especially in extremely hot and cold
temperatures.

Safe for the Environment

The Meglobaloil Process provides an environmentally responsible way to recycle used oil. A
technology to recycle used oil is needed, because the United States generates 1.4 billion gallons of
used oil each year, according to a report published by Argonne National Laboratory. Of that total,
only 12 percent of used oil is recycled into high quality products. The rest of used oil is either burned
(56 percent) or disposed illegally (32 percent). Illegally disposed used oil is hazardous to the
environment, because just one gallon of used oil can contaminate one million gallons of groundwater!
The used oil that is burned as a low-grade fuel is only minimally cleaned. As a result, harmful metals
and contaminants in the used oil could be released into the air. In addition, burning used oil is not
recycling used oil to its highest and best use.
The finished products from the Meglobaloil process can be sold as high-quality products. The clean
base oil can be used safely as a lubricant or can be used as a clean-burning industrial fuel.
The residuum from the process passes the United States Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA)
Toxicity Characteristic Leach Process (TCLP) tests. Passing these tests means that none of the
harmful chemicals and metals originally found in the used oil leach into the environment. Water
removed from the used oil can be disposed with minimal treatment

Saving a Precious, Nonrenewable Resource

Only one out of about every 70 barrels of oil is processed into virgin lube stock. Many companies
spend billions of dollars worldwide on exploring, recovering and refining crude oil to obtain a quality
lube oil stock. In addition, these companies then spend millions on research and development and
marketing of the retail product. Then, after consumers use the oil in cars, trucks and machinery, the
oil is basically thrown away.
With Meglobaloil's process, companies can recycle used oil back to pure lube oil again and again,
thus saving a precious, nonrenewable resource. In addition, the energy consumed in producing
regenerated lubricating oil is one-third of the energy necessary for the production new lubricating oil.
