Who am I?
My name is Ratna Rintaningrum. I am a lecturer at the Institute of Technology Sepuluh (ITS)
Nopember, Surabaya. I have completed my Master and Doctoral degrees from Flinders
University, South Australia. My expertise does not only focus on teaching and learning
English as a foreign language, but I also have interest in academic achievement, English
proficiency, testing and measurement, advanced statistical modelling, quantitative data
analysis as well as qualitative data analysis. Moreover, I have interest in leadership and
organization.
I was born in a town, namely, Trenggalek. It is part of East Java province. It usually takes
four hours by car from Surabaya, but since the traffic is very crowd, it can take five up to six
hours to arrive in Trenggalek. Trenggalek has population less than 1 million. It is popular
with agriculture and farming. However, when time changes, people have a variety of
occupation such as teacher, lecturer, doctor, nurse, government officer, and banker.
Trenggalek is rich with some tourist sites, namely, beaches, such as Prigi, Karang Gongso,
and Pelang. It is also popular with some traditional food such as sesame seed balls (geti), soy
crackers (kripik tempe), cassava crackers (kripik telo) and many more.
My parents were school principals. My father worked at a senior high school, while my
mother worked at a primary school. My father passed away a year ago. I am the only
daughter that my parents have. I have three brothers. I am the second child in my big family.
My two brothers work independently, while my little brother is an army.
I am married. My husband is a pharmacist. I have two boys. My oldest son is going to high
school, namely SMU 5. He is in Year 1. My youngest son is going to primary school. He is in
Year 4. My sons can speak English better than me. They had been seven years in Australia.
They grow up in Australia. As we go back to Indonesia, my sons have to learn to speak,

listen, write and read in Bahasa Indonesia. I and my husband help them to cope with some
difficulties.
I want to be a professional lecturer and researcher. It is my awareness that a lecturer has to be
able to teach well. Thats why quality of instruction must be improved. I continuously
improve my quality by reading some textbooks and international journals as well as writing
papers and international journals. I believe that my students can be my good friends. Through
my belief, I continuously help them to improve their performance in English and their
academic achievement. I am approachable. With my abilities to play with some advanced
statistical modelling, being a professional researcher is my dream.
