The Self Study will start with an honest review of

our students, staff and faculty will have many
chances to participate in this conversation.

Sustainability. Conservation. Stewardship. These are not just buzz-words, not just hype. They should be
part of our everyday thinking, work and studies. If you think that the Emirates is not a good place to
teach sustainability, with our current high levels of energy and resource consumption, I can understand
hy you thi k so, ut I elie e youre ro g.
It is clear that the leadership of the UAE is making a sincere and strong commitment to economic and
environmental sustainability. The media over the last year has been filled with reports of initiatives
from government, business, and civil society promoting environmental protection, locally produced
food, energy conservation and renewable energy. From Sheikh Mohammed down, the message is clear
Dubai must prepare for a very different world ten and twenty years from now, regardless of what the
price of oil does in the short term. Climate change, population growth, global scarcity of water and food,
are e ery odys pro le , a d the UAE ill do its part.
At IHC we are at an early stage of preparing to offer new academic concentrations in Global Studies and
Environmental Studies. Glo al tudies i ludes the study of the orlds e o o y, e iro e t, ultures
and faiths, changing technologies, infrastructure, business, media and communications. Environmental
Studies would be an interdisciplinary concentration combining the natural and life sciences, humanities,
social science and environmental entrepreneurship. Either could be taken as a minor in combination
with the other. Both are intended to prepare students for jobs in the sustainable, global industries of the
future.
