HINDRANCES- OBSTRUCTIONS

DIFFERENT MANAGING LEVELS IN CONSTRUCTION PROJECT- exploring the causes of

hindrances due to or at a particular managing level.i.e, Top management (Client,
Principle, MD, GM, AGM etc.) to Low management level (Supervisors, Foreman, Workers
etc.)
Problems come from the inexperience of design builders in practice or the influence of BOT
The design (constructors planned construction work and prepared Critical Path Method (CPM) schedules) and
construction were executed separately without close cooperation
Construction differs widely from manufacturing in:
The work is often seasonal
Often involves remote sites with
various access problems
Difficulty in applying automation
Costs can vary according to conditions
Difficult to manage and supply
utilities and other resources.
Technical innovations are adopted slower.
Product can be of mind-boggling
size, cost, and complexity
The work is not performed in
controlled conditions, therefore
highly impacted by weather and
other environmental condition

Each project is unique

The process is not as predictable
There is high potential for encountering unforeseen
conditions

Success is dependent upon the quality of its people

Very custom-oriented

Construction project planning and minimization/ elimination of hindrances process vary even on similar types
of projects. The fact is that most of the project control systems cannot be used in planning and execution
process at the early stages of the project or to identify the proper reasons for the hindrances faced. There is no
such technique or method in project management that can be used in all the phases of the project or that
analyses the planning and execution hindrances.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY:
The purpose of this study was to review the construction planning process, and gather
data on those processes from the engineers, designers and planning engineers and
develop a technique, if followed, could help to overcome or reduce the impact of
hindrances which in turn reduce the time allocated to planning and execution (i.e., Total
project period) and costs incurred due to the hindrances. The various techniques,
methods and project management strategies were reviewed and the methodology was
developed that would assist the construction industry professionals in creating most cost
effective plans and hopefully will result in most efficient project with no hindrances.

Construction planning it involves the choice of technology, the definition of

work tasks, the estimation of the required resources and durations for
individual tasks, and the identification of any interactions among the different
work tasks.
WORK UNIT PLANNING AS A SOLUTION
The WU planning consists of five steps
(1) Divide the overall work
(2) Group tasks into Work Units
(3) Design the Work Unit
(4) Review and issue each Work Unit
(5) Construct and feedback
WORK FORCE CONSIDERATIONS
TIME CONSTRAINTS
LEGAL ISSUES.
