The manufacturing system is a system that adds value to raw material to be
other products more fruitful or in other words manufacturing system is an interaction
to change raw material become an output that have added value. This term may refer
to a range of human activity, from handicraft to high technology, but most common
applied to the industry, where raw material converted into other products in a large
scale. The output of manufacturing system is a finished product that can be marketed
directly to the public, e.g plastic chairs result from injection molding process. In
addition, the output from manufacturing system can be intermediate goods that would
become input for another manufacturing systems. For example the production of car
tire is the input for production auto mobile.

The position of manufacturing systems can be seen in the picture above.

Manufacturing systems in in the black area. From the picture can be seen that
manufacturing systems is the centre of all manufacturing process that interact in
production process. In general, manufacturing systems is an interaction between
automation and control technologies, material handling technologies, quality control
systems,and manufacturing support systems.
Manufacturing systems consists several component, these components usually
include production machine, material handling system, computer systems and human
works. In this modern era, many company use machine to produce their product. The
machine can be classified as manual operated, semi- automated and fully automated.
In manufacturing systems, production area usually called workstation. The next
manufacturing systems component is material handling system. The function of
material handling systems is loading and unloading work units, positioning work unit
and transporting work unit between station(Groveer, 2007). Material handling system
is important as a connecting from one process to another process. In automated
manufacturing systems, a computer is required to control automated and semi
atomated equipment. There are many typical computer systems function in computer
control systems, for example communicate instructions to workers and schedule
operation. The last component is human works. Human workers are referred as direct

labor. In manufacturing systems that fully automated, diret labor work as controller the
machine and make sure the machine work well.
Manufacturing industry is important to the economy of the countries because it
can give great effect to industry sector and human in general. China has proven that
manufactur have great effect for their economic growth.
United States is the largest manufacturing economy in the world, producing 21
percent of the global manufacturing products. China was second at 15 percent and
Japan was third at 12 percent. The US manufacturing generated $ 1600000000000
every year, or 11.2 percent of U.S. GDP. Manufacturing employment was estimated at
18.6 million in support in the us-about one out of six private sector jobs. In 2009, u.s.
manufacturing workers an average of $ 74.447 per year are received, including salary
and benefits. Non-manufacturing workers obtain a gain $ 63.122 per year.
Indonesia is the largest market in ASEAN for manufacturing and Assembly of
vehicles, automotive technology, auto parts, accessories and maintenance equipment.
A production capacity of 750,000 units almost a year through 30 manufacturers and
more than 350 component manufacturers Indonesia has attracted investment from
Toyota, Renault, VW, Hyundai, Daihatsu, Nissan, Honda, Mercedes, General Motors,
Suzuki and Mitsubishi.
Industry sector has an important role in indonesian economy. In general this
sector contributed that is great in the formation of the gross domestic product ( GDP )
national and foreign exchange revenues. If industry sector was disturbed, and directly
national economy ere distrubed. Industry sector is believed to be a sector that could
lead to another in an economic sectors to progress. Products of industry always have
a term of trade high and creating added value larger compared by other products. It is
caused by industry sector having a highly diverse the variation of products and able to
provide high benefits to the users ( dumairy, 2000 ).
The manufacturing industry sector has experienced its own development
gradually managed to bring about change in the structure of the national economy. In
addition to contributing to the gross domestic product (GDP), which means an increase
in people's income, this sector also plays a role in increasing the absorption of labour.
For more than twenty years, the role of the manufacturing industry in the economy of
Indonesia has increased substantially, from 19% to GDP in 1990 to 26% in 2009.
Although during the years 1990-2008, the industrial sector also experienced a
decrease in growth due to the crisis. On the other hand, the increase in manufacturing
employment only rose from 10% to 12%.

manufacturing in 19942009 year

The industrial sector represents a significant contribution to the sector in the

economy. In 1967 - 1997, the industrial sector growth almost always on top of
economic growth. Economic growth in that period have on average by 6.1%, while the
growth in the industrial sector reached 10.3% per annum. At the time of the various
policies carried out to enhance the growth of the industrial sector are import
substitution and export orientation.

The growth of the

industrial sector in 19672009
In addition, manufacturing industry shows the tendency is increasing steadily
during the period 1993-2010. Contribution of industrial manufacturing sectors in 2010,
27,44 %, followed the trade sector and agriculture, each 17,47 % and 14,03 % ( BPS,
2011 ).
Export in manufacturing industry has a huge role of foreign exchange receipts
through its contribution on the total export of Indonesia. In 2009, the export value of
the sector's manufacturing industry reached 73 435.8 million dollars or 75,33% of the
total exports of non-oil and gas. These Data indicate that the export sectors of the
manufacturing industry play an important role in the formation of national export and
also contributes to the economic growth of Indonesia. But in 2010, export
manufacturing industry sector's contribution to the total national exports has
decreased from 75,33% to 70.37% despite an increase in export value itself i.e.
amounting to 91 302.9 million dollars.

The manufacturing industry is an important aspect in a country especially from

the economic aspects. Not only can increase the state revenue but also can absorb
much employee so as to minimize unemployment. The existence of manufacturing is
also important for a country both internally and externally. Internally, to meet the
needs of the product domestically and externally to satisfy the needs of the export
market.
