Gemeinschaft("community")isanassociationinwhichindividualsaremainlyorientedtothewillofthe
largergroup,generallymorethantheirownselfinterest.Theiractivitiesareregulatedbycommonmores
orbeliefsabouttheappropriatebehaviorandresponsibilitiesofmembersoftheassociation.These
associationsaremarkedbywhatTnniescalled"unityofwill."Hesawthefamilyasthemostperfect
expressionofGemeinschafthowever,healsoexpectedthatGemeinschaftcouldbebasedonsharedplace
andsharedbeliefaswellaskinship,andincludedgloballydispersedreligiouscommunitiesaspossible
examplesofGemeinschaft.
