ACT I
SCENE I MALCOLM This is the sergeant
A desert place. Who like a good and hardy soldier fought
’Gainst my captivity. Hail, brave friend!
[Thunder and lightning. Enter three Witches] Say to the king the knowledge of the broil
As thou didst leave it.
FIRST WITCH When shall we three meet again
In thunder, lightning, or in rain? SERGEANT Doubtful it stood;
As two spent swimmers, that do cling together
SECOND WITCH When the hurlyburly’s done, And choke their art. The merciless Macdonwald—
When the battle’s lost and won. Worthy to be a rebel, for to that
The multiplying villanies of nature
THIRD WITCH That will be ere the set of sun.
Do swarm upon him—from the western isles
FIRST WITCH Where the place? Of kerns and gallowglasses is supplied;
And fortune, on his damned quarrel smiling,
SECOND WITCH Upon the heath. Show’d like a rebel’s whore: but all’s too weak:
For brave Macbeth—well he deserves that name—
THIRD WITCH There to meet with Macbeth. Disdaining fortune, with his brandish’d steel,
FIRST WITCH I come, Graymalkin! Which smoked with bloody execution,
Like valour’s minion carved out his passage
SECOND WITCH Paddock calls. Till he faced the slave;
Which ne’er shook hands, nor bade farewell to him,
THIRD WITCH Anon. Till he unseam’d him from the nave to the chaps,
ALLFair is foul, and foul is fair: And fix’d his head upon our battlements.
Hover through the fog and filthy air. DUNCAN O valiant cousin! Worthy gentleman!
[Exeunt] SERGEANT As whence the sun ’gins his reflection
Shipwrecking storms and direful thunders break,
SCENE II So from that spring whence comfort seem’d to come
A camp near Forres. Discomfort swells. Mark, king of Scotland, mark:
No sooner justice had with valour arm’d
[Alarum within. Enter DUNCAN, MALCOLM, Compell’d these skipping kerns to trust their heels,
DONALBAIN, LENNOX, with Attendants, But the Norweyan lord surveying vantage,
meeting a bleeding Sergeant] With furbish’d arms and new supplies of men
Began a fresh assault.
DUNCAN What bloody man is that? He can report,
As seemeth by his plight, of the revolt DUNCAN Dismay’d not this
The newest state. Our captains, Macbeth and Banquo?

Macbeth: ACT I
SERGEANT Yes; DUNCAN What he hath lost noble Macbeth hath won.
As sparrows eagles, or the hare the lion.
If I say sooth, I must report they were [Exeunt]
As cannons overcharged with double cracks, so they
Doubly redoubled strokes upon the foe: SCENE III
Except they meant to bathe in reeking wounds, A heath near Forres.
Or memorise another Golgotha,
I cannot tell. [Thunder. Enter the three Witches]
But I am faint, my gashes cry for help.
FIRST WITCH Where hast thou been, sister?
DUNCAN So well thy words become
SECOND WITCH Killing swine.
thee as thy wounds;
They smack of honour both. Go get him surgeons. THIRD WITCH Sister, where thou?
[Exit Sergeant, attended] FIRST WITCH A sailor’s wife had chestnuts in her lap,
And munch’d, and munch’d, and munch’d:—
Who comes here? “Give me,” quoth I:
“Aroint thee, witch!” the rump-fed ronyon cries.
[Enter ROSS] Her husband’s to Aleppo gone, master o’ the Tiger:
MALCOLM The worthy thane of Ross. But in a sieve I’ll thither sail,
And, like a rat without a tail,
LENNOX What a haste looks through his eyes! So I’ll do, I’ll do, and I’ll do.
should he look
That seems to speak things strange. SECOND WITCH I’ll give thee a wind.
DUNCAN Whence camest thou, worthy thane? THIRD WITCH And I another.
ROSS From Fife, great king; FIRST WITCH I myself have all the other,
Where the Norweyan banners flout the sky And the very ports they blow,
And fan our people cold. Norway himself, All the quarters that they know
With terrible numbers, I’ the shipman’s card.
Assisted by that most disloyal traitor I will drain him dry as hay:
The thane of Cawdor, began a dismal conflict; Sleep shall neither night nor day
Till that Bellona’s bridegroom, lapp’d in proof, Hang upon his pent-house lid;
Confronted him with self-comparisons, He shall live a man forbid:
Point against point rebellious, arm ’gainst arm. Weary se’nnights nine times nine
Curbing his lavish spirit: and, to conclude, Shall he dwindle, peak and pine:
The victory fell on us. Though his bark cannot be lost,
Yet it shall be tempest-tost.
DUNCAN Great happiness! Look what I have.
ROSS That now SECOND WITCH Show me, show me.
Sweno, the Norways’ king, craves composition:
Nor would we deign him burial of his men FIRST WITCH Here I have a pilot’s thumb,
Till he disbursed at Saint Colme’s inch Wreck’d as homeward he did come.
Ten thousand dollars to our general use.
[Drum within]
DUNCAN No more that thane of Cawdor shall deceive
Our bosom interest: go pronounce his present death, THIRD WITCH A drum, a drum!
And with his former title greet Macbeth. Macbeth doth come.
ROSS I’ll see it done. ALL The weird sisters, hand in hand,
Posters of the sea and land,
Thus do go about, about:
Thrice to thine and thrice to mine
BANQUO Good sir, why do you start; and seem to fear [Enter ROSS and ANGUS]
Things that do sound so fair? I’ the name of truth,
Are ye fantastical, or that indeed ROSS The king hath happily received, Macbeth,
Which outwardly ye show? My noble partner The news of thy success; and when he reads
You greet with present grace and great prediction Thy personal venture in the rebels’ fight,
Of noble having and of royal hope, His wonders and his praises do contend
That he seems rapt withal: to me you speak not. Which should be thine or his: silenced with that,
If you can look into the seeds of time, In viewing o’er the rest o’ the selfsame day,
And say which grain will grow and which will not, He finds thee in the stout Norweyan ranks,
Speak then to me, who neither beg nor fear Nothing afeard of what thyself didst make,
Your favours nor your hate. Strange images of death. As thick as hail
Came post with post; and every one did bear
FIRST WITCH Hail! Thy praises in his kingdom’s great defence,
And pour’d them down before him.
SECOND WITCH Hail!
ANGUS We are sent
THIRD WITCH Hail! To give thee from our royal master thanks;
Only to herald thee into his sight,
FIRST WITCH Lesser than Macbeth, and greater.
Not pay thee.
SECOND WITCH Not so happy, yet much happier.
ROSS And, for an earnest of a greater honour,
THIRD WITCH Thou shalt get kings, though thou He bade me, from him, call thee thane of Cawdor:
be none: In which addition, hail, most worthy thane!
So all hail, Macbeth and Banquo! For it is thine.
FIRST WITCH Banquo and Macbeth, all hail! BANQUO What, can the devil speak true?
MACBETH Stay, you imperfect speakers, tell me more: MACBETH The thane of Cawdor lives: why do you
By Sinel’s death I know I am thane of Glamis; dress me
But how of Cawdor? The thane of Cawdor lives, In borrow’d robes?
ANGUS Who was the thane lives yet; MACBETH [Aside] Come what come may,
But under heavy judgment bears that life Time and the hour runs through the roughest day.
Which he deserves to lose. Whether he was combined
With those of Norway, or did line the rebel BANQUO Worthy Macbeth, we stay upon your leisure.
With hidden help and vantage, or that with both MACBETH Give me your favour: my dull brain
He labour’d in his country’s wreck, I know not; was wrought
But treasons capital, confess’d and proved, With things forgotten. Kind gentlemen, your pains
Have overthrown him. Are register’d where every day I turn
MACBETH [Aside] Glamis, and thane of Cawdor! The leaf to read them. Let us toward the king.
The greatest is behind. Think upon what hath chanced, and, at more time,
The interim having weigh’d it, let us speak
[To ROSS and ANGUS] Our free hearts each to other.
Thanks for your pains. BANQUO Very gladly.
[Exeunt]

Macbeth: ACT I
MACBETH I am settled, and bend up Away, and mock the time with fairest show:
Each corporal agent to this terrible feat. False face must hide what the false heart doth know.

ACT II
BANQUO And she goes down at twelve. MACBETH If you shall cleave to my consent, when ’tis,
It shall make honour for you.
FLEANCE I take’t, ’tis later, sir.
BANQUO So I lose none
BANQUO Hold, take my sword. There’s husbandry In seeking to augment it, but still keep
in heaven; My bosom franchised and allegiance clear,
Their candles are all out. Take thee that too. I shall be counsell’d.
A heavy summons lies like lead upon me,
And yet I would not sleep: merciful powers, MACBETH Good repose the while!
Restrain in me the cursed thoughts that nature
BANQUO Thanks, sir: the like to you!
Gives way to in repose!
[Exeunt BANQUO and FLEANCE]
[Enter MACBETH, and a Servant with a torch]
MACBETH Go bid thy mistress, when my drink is ready,
Give me my sword.
She strike upon the bell. Get thee to bed.
Who’s there?
MACBETH A friend. [Exit Servant]
BANQUO What, sir, not yet at rest? The king’s a-bed: Is this a dagger which I see before me,
He hath been in unusual pleasure, and The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee.
Sent forth great largess to your offices. I have thee not, and yet I see thee still.
This diamond he greets your wife withal, Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible
By the name of most kind hostess; and shut up To feeling as to sight? Or art thou but
In measureless content. A dagger of the mind, a false creation,
Proceeding from the heat-oppressed brain?
MACBETH Being unprepared, I see thee yet, in form as palpable
Our will became the servant to defect; As this which now I draw.
Which else should free have wrought. Thou marshall’st me the way that I was going;
And such an instrument I was to use. MACBETH I have done the deed. Didst thou not hear
Mine eyes are made the fools o’ the other senses, a noise?
Or else worth all the rest; I see thee still,
And on thy blade and dudgeon gouts of blood, LADY MACBETH I heard the owl scream and the

Whose howl’s his watch, thus with his stealthy pace.
LADY MACBETH Ay.
With Tarquin’s ravishing strides, towards his design
Moves like a ghost. Thou sure and firm-set earth, MACBETH Hark!
Hear not my steps, which way they walk, for fear Who lies i’ the second chamber?
Thy very stones prate of my whereabout,
And take the present horror from the time, LADY MACBETH Donalbain.
Which now suits with it. Whiles I threat, he lives:
Words to the heat of deeds too cold breath gives. MACBETH This is a sorry sight.
I go, and it is done; the bell invites me. LADY MACBETH A foolish thought, to say a sorry sight.
Hear it not, Duncan; for it is a knell MACBETH There’s one did laugh in’s sleep, and one

That they did wake each other: I stood and heard them:

Again to sleep.

[Enter LADY MACBETH] MACBETH One cried “God bless us!” and “Amen”
the other;
LADY MACBETH That which hath made them drunk As they had seen me with these hangman’s hands.
hath made me bold; Listening their fear, I could not say “Amen,”
What hath quench’d them hath given me fire. When they did say “God bless us!”
Hark! Peace!
It was the owl that shriek’d, the fatal bellman, LADY MACBETH Consider it not so deeply.
Which gives the stern’st good-night. He is about it:
The doors are open; and the surfeited grooms MACBETH But wherefore could not I

MACBETH [Within] Who’s there? What, ho! After these ways; so, it will make us mad.
LADY MACBETH Alack, I am afraid they have awaked, MACBETH Methought I heard a voice cry
And ’tis not done. The attempt and not the deed “Sleep no more!
Confounds us. Hark! I laid their daggers ready; Macbeth does murder sleep,” the innocent sleep,
He could not miss ’em. Had he not resembled Sleep that knits up the ravell’d sleeve of care,
My father as he slept, I had done’t. The death of each day’s life, sore labour’s bath,
Balm of hurt minds, great nature’s second course,
[Enter MACBETH] Chief nourisher in life’s feast,—
MACBETH Still it cried “Sleep no more!” to all MACBETH To know my deed, ’twere best not
the house: know myself.
“Glamis hath murder’d sleep, and therefore Cawdor
Shall sleep no more; Macbeth shall sleep no more.” [Knocking within]
LADY MACBETH Who was it that thus cried? Why, Wake Duncan with thy knocking! I would
worthy thane, thou couldst!
You do unbend your noble strength, to think
So brainsickly of things. Go get some water, [Exeunt]
And wash this filthy witness from your hand.
Why did you bring these daggers from the place? SCENE III
They must lie there: go carry them; and smear The same.

MACBETH I’ll go no more:
I am afraid to think what I have done; PORTER Here’s a knocking indeed! If a man were porter

Get on your nightgown, lest occasion call us,
And show us to be watchers. Be not lost [Enter MACDUFF and LENNOX]

MACDUFF Was it so late, friend, ere you went to bed, MACBETH He does: he did appoint so.
That you do lie so late?

[Exeunt MACBETH and LENNOX]
MACDUFF Is the king stirring, worthy thane?
Awake, awake!
MACBETH Not yet. Ring the alarum-bell. Murder and treason!
Banquo and Donalbain! Malcolm! Awake!
MACDUFF He did command me to call timely on him:
Shake off this downy sleep, death’s counterfeit,
I have almost slipp’d the hour.
And look on death itself! Up, up, and see
MACBETH I’ll bring you to him. The great doom’s image! Malcolm! Banquo!
As from your graves rise up, and walk like sprites,
MACDUFF I know this is a joyful trouble to you; To countenance this horror! Ring the bell.
But yet ’tis one.
[Bell rings]
MACBETH The labour we delight in physics pain.
This is the door. [Enter LADY MACBETH]
MACDUFF I’ll make so bold to call, LADY MACBETH What’s the business,
For ’tis my limited service. That such a hideous trumpet calls to parley
The sleepers of the house? Speak, speak!
[Exit]
LENNOX Goes the king hence to-day?
MACDUFF O gentle lady, And his gash’d stabs look’d like a breach in nature
’Tis not for you to hear what I can speak: For ruin’s wasteful entrance: there, the murderers,
The repetition, in a woman’s ear, Steep’d in the colours of their trade, their daggers
Would murder as it fell. Unmannerly breech’d with gore: who could refrain,
That had a heart to love, and in that heart
[Enter BANQUO] Courage to make ’s love known?
O Banquo, Banquo, LADY MACBETH Help me hence, ho!
Our royal master ’s murder’d!
MACDUFF Look to the lady.
LADY MACBETH Woe, alas!
What, in our house? MALCOLM [Aside to DONALBAIN] Why do we hold
our tongues,
BANQUO Too cruel any where. That most may claim this argument for ours?
Dear Duff, I prithee, contradict thyself,
And say it is not so. DONALBAIN [Aside to MALCOLM] What should be
spoken here, where our fate,
[Re-enter MACBETH and LENNOX, with ROSS] Hid in an auger-hole, may rush, and seize us?
Let’s away;
MACBETH Had I but died an hour before this chance, Our tears are not yet brew’d.
I had lived a blessed time; for, from this instant,
There’s nothing serious in mortality: MALCOLM [Aside to DONALBAIN] Nor our
All is but toys: renown and grace is dead; strong sorrow
The wine of life is drawn, and the mere lees Upon the foot of motion.
Is left this vault to brag of.
BANQUO Look to the lady:
[Enter MALCOLM and DONALBAIN]
[LADY MACBETH is carried out]
DONALBAIN What is amiss?
And when we have our naked frailties hid,
MACBETH You are, and do not know’t: That suffer in exposure, let us meet,
The spring, the head, the fountain of your blood And question this most bloody piece of work,
Is stopp’d; the very source of it is stopp’d. To know it further. Fears and scruples shake us:
In the great hand of God I stand; and thence
MACDUFF Your royal father ’s murder’d. Against the undivulged pretence I fight
Of treasonous malice.
MALCOLM O, by whom?
MACDUFF And so do I.
LENNOX Those of his chamber, as it seem’d,
had done ’t: ALL So all.
Their hands and faces were all
badged with blood; MACBETH Let’s briefly put on manly readiness,
So were their daggers, which unwiped we found And meet i’ the hall together.
Upon their pillows:
They stared, and were distracted; no man’s life ALL Well contented.
Was to be trusted with them.
[Exeunt all but Malcolm and Donalbain.
MACBETH O, yet I do repent me of my fury,
MALCOLM What will you do? Let’s not consort
That I did kill them.

MACDUFF Wherefore did you so? To show an unfelt sorrow is an office
Which the false man does easy. I’ll to England.
MACBETH Who can be wise, amazed, temperate
and furious, DONALBAIN To Ireland, I; our separated fortune
Loyal and neutral, in a moment? No man: Shall keep us both the safer: where we are,
The expedition of my violent love There’s daggers in men’s smiles: the near in blood,
Outrun the pauser, reason. Here lay Duncan, The nearer bloody.
His silver skin laced with his golden blood;
MALCOLM This murderous shaft that’s shot How goes the world, sir, now?
Hath not yet lighted, and our safest way
Is to avoid the aim. Therefore, to horse; MACDUFF Why, see you not?
And let us not be dainty of leave-taking, ROSS Is’t known who did this more than bloody deed?
But shift away: there’s warrant in that theft
Which steals itself, when there’s no mercy left. MACDUFF Those that Macbeth hath slain.
ROSS And Duncan’s horses—a thing most strange ROSS Well, I will thither.
and certain—
MACDUFF Well, may you see things well done
Beauteous and swift, the minions of their race,
there: adieu!
Turn’d wild in nature, broke their stalls, flung out,
Lest our old robes sit easier than our new!
Contending ’gainst obedience, as they would make
War with mankind. ROSS Farewell, father.
OLD MAN ’Tis said they eat each other. OLD MAN God’s benison go with you; and with those
That would make good of bad, and friends of foes!
ROSS They did so, to the amazement of mine eyes
That look’d upon’t. Here comes the good Macduff. [Exeunt]
[Enter MACDUFF]
ACT III
SCENE I BANQUO Thou hast it now: king, Cawdor, Glamis, all,
Forres. The palace. As the weird women promised, and, I fear,
Thou play’dst most foully for’t: yet it was said

But that myself should be the root and father Let every man be master of his time
Of many kings. If there come truth from them— Till seven at night: to make society
As upon thee, Macbeth, their speeches shine— The sweeter welcome, we will keep ourself
Why, by the verities on thee made good, Till supper-time alone: while then, God be with you!
May they not be my oracles as well,
And set me up in hope? But hush! No more. [Exeunt all but MACBETH, and an attendant]
[Sennet sounded. Enter MACBETH, as king, Sirrah, a word with you: attend those men

Lords, Ladies, and Attendants] ATTENDANT They are, my lord, without the palace gate.
MACBETH Here’s our chief guest. MACBETH Bring them before us.
LADY MACBETH If he had been forgotten,

It had been as a gap in our great feast,
And all-thing unbecoming. To be thus is nothing;
But to be safely thus.—Our fears in Banquo
MACBETH To-night we hold a solemn supper, sir,
Stick deep; and in his royalty of nature
And I’ll request your presence. Reigns that which would be fear’d: ’tis much he dares;
BANQUO Let your highness And, to that dauntless temper of his mind,
Command upon me; to the which my duties He hath a wisdom that doth guide his valour
Are with a most indissoluble tie To act in safety. There is none but he
For ever knit. Whose being I do fear: and, under him,
My Genius is rebuked; as, it is said,
MACBETH Ride you this afternoon? Mark Antony’s was by Caesar. He chid the sisters
When first they put the name of king upon me,
BANQUO Ay, my good lord. And bade them speak to him: then prophet-like

Is’t far you ride? No son of mine succeeding. If ’t be so,
For Banquo’s issue have I filed my mind;
BANQUO As far, my lord, as will fill up the time For them the gracious Duncan have I murder’d;
’Twixt this and supper: go not my horse the better, Put rancours in the vessel of my peace
I must become a borrower of the night Only for them; and mine eternal jewel
For a dark hour or twain. Given to the common enemy of man,
To make them kings, the seed of Banquo kings!
MACBETH Fail not our feast. Rather than so, come fate into the list.
And champion me to the utterance! Who’s there!
BANQUO My lord, I will not.
MACBETH We hear, our bloody cousins are bestow’d [Re-enter Attendant, with two Murderers]
In England and in Ireland, not confessing Now go to the door, and stay there till we call.
Their cruel parricide, filling their hearers
With strange invention: but of that to-morrow, [Exit Attendant]
When therewithal we shall have cause of state
Craving us jointly. Hie you to horse: adieu, Was it not yesterday we spoke together?
Till you return at night. Goes Fleance with you?
FIRST MURDERER It was, so please your highness.
BANQUO Ay, my good lord: our time does call upon ’s.
MACBETH Well then, now
MACBETH I wish your horses swift and sure of foot; Have you consider’d of my speeches? Know
And so I do commend you to their backs. Farewell. That it was he in the times past which held you
So under fortune, which you thought had been

That writes them all alike: and so of men.
Now, if you have a station in the file, MACBETH I’ll call upon you straight: abide within.
Not i’ the worst rank of manhood, say ’t;
And I will put that business in your bosoms, [Exeunt Murderers]
Whose execution takes your enemy off, It is concluded. Banquo, thy soul’s flight,
Grapples you to the heart and love of us, If it find heaven, must find it out to-night.
Who wear our health but sickly in his life,
Which in his death were perfect. [Exit]
SECOND MURDERER I am one, my liege,

Whom the vile blows and buffets of the world

Have so incensed that I am reckless what
I do to spite the world. [Enter LADY MACBETH and a Servant]
FIRST MURDERER And I another LADY MACBETH Is Banquo gone from court?
So weary with disasters, tugg’d with fortune,
That I would set my life on any chance, SERVANT Ay, madam, but returns again to-night.
To mend it, or be rid on’t.
LADY MACBETH Say to the king, I would attend
MACBETH Both of you his leisure
Know Banquo was your enemy. For a few words.
BOTH MURDERERS True, my lord. SERVANT Madam, I will.
MACBETH So is he mine; and in such bloody distance, [Exit]
That every minute of his being thrusts
Against my near’st of life: and though I could LADY MACBETH Nought’s had, all’s spent,
Where our desire is got without content: Till thou applaud the deed. Come, seeling night,
’Tis safer to be that which we destroy Scarf up the tender eye of pitiful day;
Than by destruction dwell in doubtful joy. And with thy bloody and invisible hand
Cancel and tear to pieces that great bond
[Enter MACBETH] Which keeps me pale! Light thickens; and the crow
Makes wing to the rooky wood:
How now, my lord! Why do you keep alone, Good things of day begin to droop and drowse;
Of sorriest fancies your companions making, While night’s black agents to their preys do rouse.
Using those thoughts which should indeed have died Thou marvell’st at my words: but hold thee still;
With them they think on? Things without all remedy Things bad begun make strong themselves by ill.
Should be without regard: what’s done is done. So, prithee, go with me.
MACBETH We have scotch’d the snake, not kill’d it:
She’ll close and be herself, whilst our poor malice [Exeunt]
Remains in danger of her former tooth.

But let the frame of things disjoint, both the

Ere we will eat our meal in fear and sleep
[Enter three Murderers]
In the affliction of these terrible dreams
That shake us nightly: better be with the dead, FIRST MURDERER But who did bid thee join with us?
Whom we, to gain our peace, have sent to peace,
Than on the torture of the mind to lie THIRD MURDERER Macbeth.
In restless ecstasy. Duncan is in his grave;
After life’s fitful fever he sleeps well; SECOND MURDERER He needs not our mistrust,
Treason has done his worst: nor steel, nor poison, since he delivers
Malice domestic, foreign levy, nothing, Our offices and what we have to do
Can touch him further. To the direction just.
LADY MACBETH Come on; FIRST MURDERER Then stand with us.
Gentle my lord, sleek o’er your rugged looks; The west yet glimmers with some streaks of day:
Be bright and jovial among your guests to-night. Now spurs the lated traveller apace
To gain the timely inn; and near approaches
MACBETH So shall I, love; and so, I pray, be you: The subject of our watch.
Let your remembrance apply to Banquo;
Present him eminence, both with eye and tongue: THIRD MURDERER Hark! I hear horses.
Unsafe the while, that we BANQUO [Within] Give us a light there, ho!
Must lave our honours in these flattering streams,
And make our faces vizards to our hearts, SECOND MURDERER Then ’tis he: the rest

Already are i’ the court.
LADY MACBETH You must leave this.
FIRST MURDERER His horses go about.
MACBETH O, full of scorpions is my mind, dear wife!
Thou know’st that Banquo, and his Fleance, lives. THIRD MURDERER Almost a mile: but he does usually,
So all men do, from hence to the palace gate
LADY MACBETH But in them nature’s copy’s not eterne. Make it their walk.
MACBETH There’s comfort yet; they are assailable; SECOND MURDERER A light, a light!
Then be thou jocund: ere the bat hath flown
His cloister’d flight, ere to black Hecate’s summons [Enter BANQUO, and FLEANCE with a torch]
The shard-borne beetle with his drowsy hums
Hath rung night’s yawning peal, there shall be done THIRD MURDERER ’Tis he.
A deed of dreadful note.
FIRST MURDERER Stand to’t.
LADY MACBETH What’s to be done?
BANQUO It will be rain to-night.
MACBETH Be innocent of the knowledge,
dearest chuck,

FIRST MURDERER Let it come down. MACBETH ’Tis better thee without than he within.
Is he dispatch’d?
[They set upon BANQUO]
FIRST MURDERER My lord, his throat is cut;
BANQUO O, treachery! Fly, good Fleance, fly, fly, fly! that I did for him.
Thou mayst revenge. O slave!
MACBETH Thou art the best o’ the cut-throats:
[Dies. FLEANCE escapes] yet he’s good
That did the like for Fleance: if thou didst it,
THIRD MURDERER Who did strike out the light? Thou art the nonpareil.
FIRST MURDERER Was’t not the way? FIRST MURDERER Most royal sir,
Fleance is ’scaped.
THIRD MURDERER There’s but one down; the son is fled.

LADY MACBETH, ROSS, LENNOX, Lords, There the grown serpent lies; the worm that’s fled

No teeth for the present. Get thee gone: to-morrow
MACBETH You know your own degrees; sit down:
We’ll hear, ourselves, again.

And last the hearty welcome. [Exit Murderer]
LORDS Thanks to your majesty. LADY MACBETH My royal lord,
MACBETH Ourself will mingle with society, You do not give the cheer: the feast is sold
And play the humble host. That is not often vouch’d, while ’tis a-making,
Our hostess keeps her state, but in best time ’Tis given with welcome: to feed were best at home;
We will require her welcome. From thence the sauce to meat is ceremony;
Meeting were bare without it.
LADY MACBETH Pronounce it for me, sir,
to all our friends; MACBETH Sweet remembrancer!
For my heart speaks they are welcome. Now, good digestion wait on appetite,
And health on both!
[First Murderer appears at the door] LENNOX May’t please your highness sit.

There’s blood on thy face. Than pity for mischance!
Lays blame upon his promise. Please’t your highness Ere human statute purged the gentle weal;
To grace us with your royal company. Ay, and since too, murders have been perform’d
Too terrible for the ear: the times have been,
MACBETH The table’s full. That, when the brains were out, the man would die,
LENNOX Here is a place reserved, sir. And there an end; but now they rise again,
With twenty mortal murders on their crowns,
MACBETH Where? And push us from our stools: this is more strange
Than such a murder is.
LENNOX Here, my good lord. What is’t that moves
your highness? LADY MACBETH My worthy lord,
Your noble friends do lack you.
MACBETH Which of you have done this?
MACBETH I do forget.
LORDS What, my good lord? Do not muse at me, my most worthy friends,
I have a strange infirmity, which is nothing
MACBETH Thou canst not say I did it: never shake
To those that know me. Come, love and health to all;
Thy gory locks at me.
Then I’ll sit down. Give me some wine; fill full.
ROSS Gentlemen, rise: his highness is not well. I drink to the general joy o’ the whole table,
And to our dear friend Banquo, whom we miss;
LADY MACBETH Sit, worthy friends: my lord is Would he were here! To all, and him, we thirst,

And hath been from his youth: pray you, keep seat;
The fit is momentary; upon a thought LORDS Our duties, and the pledge.

You shall offend him and extend his passion: [Re-enter GHOST OF BANQUO]

Thou hast no speculation in those eyes
LADY MACBETH O proper stuff! Which thou dost glare with!
This is the very painting of your fear:
This is the air-drawn dagger which, you said, LADY MACBETH Think of this, good peers,
Led you to Duncan. O, these flaws and starts, But as a thing of custom: ’tis no other;
Impostors to true fear, would well become Only it spoils the pleasure of the time.
A woman’s story at a winter’s fire, MACBETH What man dare, I dare:

Why do you make such faces? When all’s done, The arm’d rhinoceros, or the Hyrcan tiger;
You look but on a stool. Take any shape but that, and my firm nerves
MACBETH Prithee, see there! Behold! Look! Lo! Shall never tremble: or be alive again,
how say you? And dare me to the desert with thy sword;
Why, what care I? If thou canst nod, speak too. If trembling I inhabit then, protest me
If charnel-houses and our graves must send The baby of a girl. Hence, horrible shadow!

[GHOST OF BANQUO vanishes] Why, so: being gone,
LADY MACBETH What, quite unmann’d in folly? I am a man again. Pray you, sit still.
MACBETH If I stand here, I saw him. LADY MACBETH You have displaced the mirth,
broke the good meeting,
LADY MACBETH Fie, for shame! With most admired disorder.
MACBETH Blood hath been shed ere now, MACBETH Can such things be,

Nose of Turk and Tartar’s lips, our mouths,
Finger of birth-strangled babe Or from our masters?
Ditch-deliver’d by a drab,
Make the gruel thick and slab: MACBETH Call ’em; let me see ’em.

SECOND WITCH Cool it with a baboon’s blood, ALLCome, high or low;
Then the charm is firm and good. Thyself and office deftly show!

HECATE O well done! I commend your pains; MACBETH Tell me, thou unknown power,—
And every one shall share i’ the gains;
And now about the cauldron sing, FIRST WITCH He knows thy thought:
Live elves and fairies in a ring, Hear his speech, but say thou nought.
Enchanting all that you put in.
FIRST APPARITION Macbeth! Macbeth!
[Music and a song: “Black spirits,” &c.] Macbeth! Beware Macduff;
Beware the thane of Fife. Dismiss me. Enough.
[HECATE retires]
[Descends]
SECOND WITCH By the pricking of my thumbs,
Something wicked this way comes. MACBETH Whate’er thou art, for thy good
Open, locks, caution, thanks;
Whoever knocks! Thou hast harp’d my fear aright: but one

SECOND APPARITION Macbeth! Macbeth! Macbeth!
MACBETH I conjure you, by that which you profess,

[Descends]
MACBETH Thou art too like the spirit of Banquo: down!
MACBETH Then live, Macduff: what need I fear of thee? Thy crown does sear mine eye-balls. And thy hair,
But yet I’ll make assurance double sure, Thou other gold-bound brow, is like the first.
And take a bond of fate: thou shalt not live; A third is like the former. Filthy hags!
That I may tell pale-hearted fear it lies, Why do you show me this? A fourth! Start, eyes!
And sleep in spite of thunder. What, will the line stretch out to the crack of doom?
Another yet! A seventh! I’ll see no more:
[Thunder. Third Apparition: a Child crowned, And yet the eighth appears, who bears a glass
with a tree in his hand] Which shows me many more; and some I see
That two-fold balls and treble scepters carry:
What is this Horrible sight! Now, I see, ’tis true;
That rises like the issue of a king, For the blood-bolter’d Banquo smiles upon me,
And wears upon his baby-brow the round And points at them for his.
And top of sovereignty?
ALL Listen, but speak not to’t. [Apparitions vanish]
SECOND WITCH Show! MACBETH Infected be the air whereon they ride;
And damn’d all those that trust them! I did hear
THIRD WITCH Show! The galloping of horse: who was’t came by?
LENNOX ’Tis two or three, my lord, that bring The fits o’ the season. I dare not speak
you word much further;
Macduff is fled to England. But cruel are the times, when we are traitors
And do not know ourselves, when we hold rumour
MACBETH Fled to England! From what we fear, yet know not what we fear,
LENNOX Ay, my good lord. But float upon a wild and violent sea
Each way and move. I take my leave of you:
MACBETH Time, thou anticipatest my dread exploits: Shall not be long but I’ll be here again:

The castle of Macduff I will surprise; It would be my disgrace and your discomfort:
Seize upon Fife; give to the edge o’ the sword I take my leave at once.

That trace him in his line. No boasting like a fool; [Exit]
This deed I’ll do before this purpose cool.
But no more sights!—Where are these gentlemen? LADY MACDUFF Sirrah, your father’s dead;

From whence himself does fly? He loves us not;
He wants the natural touch: for the poor wren, LADY MACDUFF Thou speak’st with all thy wit:
The most diminutive of birds, will fight, and yet, i’ faith,

All is the fear and nothing is the love; SON Was my father a traitor, mother?

ROSS My dearest coz, SON What is a traitor?
I pray you, school yourself: but for your husband,

FIRST MURDERER What, you egg!
SON And must they all be hanged that swear and lie?

LADY MACDUFF Poor prattler, how thou talk’st! MALCOLM Let us seek out some desolate shade,
and there

MESSENGER Bless you, fair dame! I am not to MACDUFF Let us rather

Though in your state of honour I am perfect. Bestride our down-fall’n birthdom: each new morn
I doubt some danger does approach you nearly: New widows howl, new orphans cry, new sorrows
If you will take a homely man’s advice, Strike heaven on the face, that it resounds
Be not found here; hence, with your little ones. As if it felt with Scotland and yell’d out
To fright you thus, methinks, I am too savage; Like syllable of dolour.
To do worse to you were fell cruelty,
Which is too nigh your person. Heaven preserve you! MALCOLM What I believe I’ll wail,
I dare abide no longer. What know believe, and what I can redress,
As I shall find the time to friend, I will.
[Exit] What you have spoke, it may be so perchance.
This tyrant, whose sole name blisters our tongues,
LADY MACDUFF Whither should I fly? Was once thought honest: you have loved him well.
I have done no harm. But I remember now He hath not touch’d you yet. I am young;
I am in this earthly world; where to do harm but something
Is often laudable, to do good sometime You may deserve of him through me, and wisdom
Accounted dangerous folly: why then, alas, To offer up a weak poor innocent lamb
Do I put up that womanly defence, To appease an angry god.
To say I have done no harm?
MACDUFF I am not treacherous.
[Enter Murderers]
MALCOLM But Macbeth is.
What are these faces? A good and virtuous nature may recoil
In an imperial charge. But I shall crave
FIRST MURDERER Where is your husband? your pardon;
That which you are my thoughts cannot transpose:
LADY MACDUFF I hope, in no place so unsanctified
Angels are bright still, though the brightest fell;
Where such as thou mayst find him.
Though all things foul would wear the brows of grace,
Yet grace must still look so.
MACDUFF I have lost my hopes. That did oppose my will: better Macbeth
Than such an one to reign.
MALCOLM Perchance even there where I did find my
doubts. MACDUFF Boundless intemperance
Why in that rawness left you wife and child, In nature is a tyranny; it hath been
Those precious motives, those strong knots of love, The untimely emptying of the happy throne
Without leave-taking? I pray you, And fall of many kings. But fear not yet
Let not my jealousies be your dishonours, To take upon you what is yours: you may

Whatever I shall think. And yet seem cold, the time you may so hoodwink.

The title is affeer’d! Fare thee well, lord: MALCOLM With this there grows
I would not be the villain that thou think’st In my most ill-composed affection such
For the whole space that’s in the tyrant’s grasp, A stanchless avarice that, were I king,
And the rich East to boot. I should cut off the nobles for their lands,
Desire his jewels and this other’s house:
MALCOLM Be not offended: And my more-having would be as a sauce
I speak not as in absolute fear of you. To make me hunger more; that I should forge
I think our country sinks beneath the yoke; Quarrels unjust against the good and loyal,
It weeps, it bleeds; and each new day a gash Destroying them for wealth.
Is added to her wounds: I think withal
There would be hands uplifted in my right; MACDUFF This avarice
And here from gracious England have I offer Sticks deeper, grows with more pernicious root
Of goodly thousands: but, for all this, Than summer-seeming lust, and it hath been
When I shall tread upon the tyrant’s head, The sword of our slain kings: yet do not fear;
Or wear it on my sword, yet my poor country Scotland hath foisons to fill up your will.
Shall have more vices than it had before, Of your mere own: all these are portable,
More suffer and more sundry ways than ever, With other graces weigh’d.
By him that shall succeed.
MALCOLM But I have none: the king-becoming graces,
MACDUFF What should he be? As justice, verity, temperance, stableness,
Bounty, perseverance, mercy, lowliness,
MALCOLM It is myself I mean: in whom I know Devotion, patience, courage, fortitude,
All the particulars of vice so grafted I have no relish of them, but abound
That, when they shall be open’d, black Macbeth In the division of each several crime,
Will seem as pure as snow, and the poor state Acting it many ways. Nay, had I power, I should
Esteem him as a lamb, being compared Pour the sweet milk of concord into hell,
With my confineless harms. Uproar the universal peace, confound

All unity on earth.
Of horrid hell can come a devil more damn’d MACDUFF O Scotland, Scotland!
In evils to top Macbeth.
MALCOLM If such a one be fit to govern, speak:
MALCOLM I grant him bloody, I am as I have spoken.
Luxurious, avaricious, false, deceitful,
Sudden, malicious, smacking of every sin MACDUFF Fit to govern!
That has a name: but there’s no bottom, none, No, not to live. O nation miserable,
In my voluptuousness: your wives, your daughters, With an untitled tyrant bloody-scepter’d,
Your matrons and your maids, could not fill up When shalt thou see thy wholesome days again,
The cistern of my lust, and my desire Since that the truest issue of thy throne
All continent impediments would o’erbear By his own interdiction stands accursed,
And does blaspheme his breed? Thy royal father
Was a most sainted king: the queen that bore thee, Himself best knows: but strangely-visited people,
Oftener upon her knees than on her feet, All swoln and ulcerous, pitiful to the eye,
Died every day she lived. Fare thee well! The mere despair of surgery, he cures,
These evils thou repeat’st upon thyself Hanging a golden stamp about their necks,
Have banish’d me from Scotland. O my breast, Put on with holy prayers: and ’tis spoken,
Thy hope ends here! To the succeeding royalty he leaves
The healing benediction. With this strange virtue,
MALCOLM Macduff, this noble passion, He hath a heavenly gift of prophecy,
Child of integrity, hath from my soul And sundry blessings hang about his throne,
Wiped the black scruples, reconciled my thoughts That speak him full of grace.
To thy good truth and honour. Devilish Macbeth
By many of these trains hath sought to win me [Enter ROSS]
Into his power, and modest wisdom plucks me
From over-credulous haste: but God above MACDUFF See, who comes here?
Deal between thee and me! For even now
I put myself to thy direction, and MALCOLM My countryman; but yet I know him not.
Unspeak mine own detraction, here abjure MACDUFF My ever-gentle cousin, welcome hither.
The taints and blames I laid upon myself,
For strangers to my nature. I am yet MALCOLM I know him now. Good God,
Unknown to woman, never was forsworn, betimes remove
Scarcely have coveted what was mine own, The means that makes us strangers!
At no time broke my faith, would not betray
The devil to his fellow and delight ROSS Sir, amen.
No less in truth than life: my first false speaking MACDUFF Stands Scotland where it did?
Was this upon myself: what I am truly,
Is thine and my poor country’s to command: ROSS Alas, poor country!
Whither indeed, before thy here-approach, Almost afraid to know itself. It cannot
Old Siward, with ten thousand warlike men, Be call’d our mother, but our grave; where nothing,
Already at a point, was setting forth. But who knows nothing, is once seen to smile;
Now we’ll together; and the chance of goodness Where sighs and groans and shrieks that rend the air
Be like our warranted quarrel! Why are you silent? Are made, not mark’d; where violent sorrow seems
A modern ecstasy; the dead man’s knell
MACDUFF Such welcome and unwelcome
Is there scarce ask’d for who; and good men’s lives
things at once Expire before the flowers in their caps,
’Tis hard to reconcile. Dying or ere they sicken.
[Enter a Doctor] MACDUFF O, relation
Too nice, and yet too true!
MALCOLM Well; more anon.—Comes the king forth,
I pray you? MALCOLM What’s the newest grief?
DOCTOR Ay, sir; there are a crew of wretched souls ROSS That of an hour’s age doth hiss the speaker:
That stay his cure: their malady convinces Each minute teems a new one.
The great assay of art; but at his touch—
Such sanctity hath heaven given his hand— MACDUFF How does my wife?
They presently amend.
ROSS Why, well.
MALCOLM I thank you, doctor.
MACDUFF And all my children?
[Exit Doctor] ROSS Well too.
MACDUFF What’s the disease he means? MACDUFF The tyrant has not batter’d at their peace?
MALCOLM ’Tis call’d the evil: ROSS No; they were well at peace when I did leave ’em.
A most miraculous work in this good king;
Which often, since my here-remain in England, MACDUFF But not a niggard of your speech: how goes’t?
I have seen him do. How he solicits heaven,

Which I have heavily borne, there ran a rumour That could be found.

Which was to my belief witness’d the rather, MACDUFF And I must be from thence!
For that I saw the tyrant’s power a-foot: My wife kill’d too?
Now is the time of help; your eye in Scotland ROSS I have said.

We are coming thither: gracious England hath
Lent us good Siward and ten thousand men; MACDUFF He has no children. All my pretty ones?
An older and a better soldier none Did you say all? O hell-kite! All?
That Christendom gives out. What, all my pretty chickens and their dam
At one fell swoop?
ROSS Would I could answer
This comfort with the like! But I have words MALCOLM Dispute it like a man.
That would be howl’d out in the desert air,
Where hearing should not latch them. MACDUFF I shall do so;
But I must also feel it as a man:
MACDUFF What concern they? I cannot but remember such things were,
The general cause? Or is it a fee-grief That were most precious to me. Did heaven look on,
Due to some single breast? And would not take their part? Sinful Macduff,
They were all struck for thee! Naught that I am,
ROSS No mind that’s honest Not for their own demerits, but for mine,
But in it shares some woe; though the main part Fell slaughter on their souls. Heaven rest them now!
Pertains to you alone.
MALCOLM Be this the whetstone of your sword: let grief
MACDUFF If it be mine, Convert to anger; blunt not the heart, enrage it.
Keep it not from me, quickly let me have it.
MACDUFF O, I could play the woman with mine eyes
ROSS Let not your ears despise my tongue for ever, And braggart with my tongue! But, gentle heavens,
Which shall possess them with the heaviest sound Cut short all intermission; front to front
That ever yet they heard. Bring thou this fiend of Scotland and myself;
MACDUFF Hum! I guess at it. Within my sword’s length set him; if he ’scape,
Heaven forgive him too!
ROSS Your castle is surprised; your wife and babes
Savagely slaughter’d: to relate the manner, MALCOLM This tune goes manly.
Were, on the quarry of these murder’d deer, Come, go we to the king; our power is ready;
To add the death of you. Our lack is nothing but our leave; Macbeth
Is ripe for shaking, and the powers above
MALCOLM Merciful heaven! Put on their instruments. Receive what cheer you may:
What, man! Ne’er pull your hat upon your brows; The night is long that never finds the day.
Give sorrow words: the grief that does not speak
Whispers the o’er-fraught heart and bids it break. [Exeunt]
MACDUFF My children too?

Macbeth: ACT V
To their deaf pillows will discharge their secrets: CAITHNESS Well, march we on,
More needs she the divine than the physician. To give obedience where ’tis truly owed:
God, God forgive us all! Look after her; Meet we the medicine of the sickly weal,
Remove from her the means of all annoyance, And with him pour we in our country’s purge
And still keep eyes upon her. So, good night: Each drop of us.
My mind she has mated, and amazed my sight.
I think, but dare not speak. LENNOX Or so much as it needs,
To dew the sovereign flower and drown the weeds.
GENTLEWOMAN Good night, good doctor. Make we our march towards Birnam.
SCENE VII SIWARD This way, my lord; the castle’s gently render’d:
Another part of the field. The tyrant’s people on both sides do fight;
The noble thanes do bravely in the war;
[Alarums. Enter MACBETH] The day almost itself professes yours,
And little is to do.
MACBETH They have tied me to a stake; I cannot fly,
But, bear-like, I must fight the course. What’s he MALCOLM We have met with foes
That was not born of woman? Such a one That strike beside us.
Am I to fear, or none.
SIWARD Enter, sir, the castle.
[Enter YOUNG SIWARD]
[Exeunt. Alarums]
YOUNG SIWARD What is thy name?
SCENE VIII
MACBETH Thou’lt be afraid to hear it. Another part of the field.
YOUNG SIWARD No; though thou call’st thyself [Enter MACBETH]
a hotter name
Than any is in hell. MACBETH Why should I play the Roman fool, and die
On mine own sword? Whiles I see lives, the gashes
MACBETH My name’s Macbeth. Do better upon them.
YOUNG SIWARD The devil himself could not
pronounce a title [Enter MACDUFF]
More hateful to mine ear. MACDUFF Turn, hell-hound, turn!
MACBETH No, nor more fearful. MACBETH Of all men else I have avoided thee:
YOUNG SIWARD Thou liest, abhorred tyrant; But get thee back; my soul is too much charged
with my sword With blood of thine already.
I’ll prove the lie thou speak’st. MACDUFF I have no words:
My voice is in my sword: thou bloodier villain
[They fight and YOUNG SIWARD is slain] Than terms can give thee out!
MACBETH Thou wast born of woman
But swords I smile at, weapons laugh to scorn, [They fight]
Brandish’d by man that’s of a woman born. MACBETH Thou losest labour:
As easy mayst thou the intrenchant air
[Exit] With thy keen sword impress as make me bleed:
Let fall thy blade on vulnerable crests;
[Alarums. Enter MACDUFF] I bear a charmed life, which must not yield,
MACDUFF That way the noise is. Tyrant, show thy face! To one of woman born.
If thou be’st slain and with no stroke of mine,
MACDUFF Despair thy charm;
My wife and children’s ghosts will haunt me still.
And let the angel whom thou still hast served
I cannot strike at wretched kerns, whose arms
Tell thee, Macduff was from his mother’s womb
Are hired to bear their staves: either thou, Macbeth,
Untimely ripp’d.
Or else my sword with an unbatter’d edge
I sheathe again undeeded. There thou shouldst be; MACBETH Accursed be that tongue that tells me so,
By this great clatter, one of greatest note For it hath cow’d my better part of man!
Seems bruited. Let me find him, fortune! And be these juggling fiends no more believed,
And more I beg not. That palter with us in a double sense;
That keep the word of promise to our ear,
[Exit. Alarums] And break it to our hope. I’ll not fight with thee.
[Enter MALCOLM and SIWARD] MACDUFF Then yield thee, coward,
And live to be the show and gaze o’ the time:
We’ll have thee, as our rarer monsters are, SIWARD Why then, God’s soldier be he!
Painted on a pole, and underwrit, Had I as many sons as I have hairs,
“Here may you see the tyrant.” I would not wish them to a fairer death:
And so, his knell is knoll’d.
MACBETH I will not yield,
To kiss the ground before young Malcolm’s feet, MALCOLM He’s worth more sorrow,
And to be baited with the rabble’s curse. And that I’ll spend for him.
Though Birnam wood be come to Dunsinane,
And thou opposed, being of no woman born, SIWARD He’s worth no more
Yet I will try the last. Before my body They say he parted well, and paid his score:
I throw my warlike shield. Lay on, Macduff, And so, God be with him! Here comes newer comfort.
And damn’d be him that first cries, “Hold, enough!”
[Re-enter MACDUFF, with MACBETH’s head]
[Exeunt, fighting. Alarums] MACDUFF Hail, king! For so thou art: behold,
where stands
[Retreat. Flourish. Enter, with drum and colours, The usurper’s cursed head: the time is free:

and Soldiers] That speak my salutation in their minds;
MALCOLM I would the friends we miss were Whose voices I desire aloud with mine:
safe arrived. Hail, King of Scotland!
SIWARD Some must go off: and yet, by these I see, ALL Hail, King of Scotland!
So great a day as this is cheaply bought.
[Flourish]
MALCOLM Macduff is missing, and your noble son.
MALCOLM We shall not spend a large expense of time
ROSS Your son, my lord, has paid a soldier’s debt: Before we reckon with your several loves,
He only lived but till he was a man; And make us even with you. My thanes and kinsmen,
The which no sooner had his prowess confirm’d Henceforth be earls, the first that ever Scotland

But like a man he died. Which would be planted newly with the time,
As calling home our exiled friends abroad
SIWARD Then he is dead? That fled the snares of watchful tyranny;
Producing forth the cruel ministers
ROSS Ay, and brought off the field: your Of this dead butcher and his fiend-like queen,
cause of sorrow Who, as ’tis thought, by self and violent hands
Must not be measured by his worth, for then Took off her life; this, and what needful else
It hath no end. That calls upon us, by the grace of Grace,
