Water Treatment Plant

Date: 17th April 2014

Person in Charge: Mrs Nur Hasliza Saidi
At 8 oclock, we depart from Royal College of Medicine Perak and at 9
oclock we arrived at Water Treatment Plant, Kampar. At 9.15 a.m., Mrs Nur
Hasliza Saidi brief to us about the process to treat the raw water.
WATER TREATMENT PROCESS
The raw water provided from the nearby Sungai Perak is pumped by four
submersible pumps of 1, 110 cubic meter each. The water intake will undergo
early screening to remove any physical substances before being pumped by the
cascade aerator for oxygenation process. The water will be exposed to the
atmosphere to increase its oxygen content. The unpleasant color, odor and taste
of the raw water will be removed by the oxygenation of iron and manganese
through this process.
An important flocculating agent, liquid aluminium sulphate is put into the raw
water after aeration. Then, the water is drained to two flocculation tanks. The
water current is slower to allow an optimal amount of flocs formed which can
trap the bacteria in the water. The water containing flocs will then drain into the
sedimentation tank where they will become bigger and heavier before settle
down to the bottom producing a clearer water.
Next, the water will be filtered by 4 units of rapid gravity sand filter system.
The sand filter is cleaned through back wash process to ensure clean, quality
water is being filtered. The back wash process is done automatically. After
filtration, the water will be chlorinated as a method of water purification to kill
microorganisms to make it fit for human consumption as drinking water.
Hydrated lime is also put into the water to ensure the pH value is within the
range which is between 7.0 and 8.5. The water pH is needed to be within the
range to avoid corrosion in acidic condition and sedimentation in alkaline
condition. Besides that, fluoridation is done to the water to reduce tooth decay
especially in children. Now, the water is safe to be used by consumers and kept
in clear water tank before being channeled to the respective areas.
From the clear water tank, 13.5 liter water will be pumped to the Bandar Baru
Seri Iskandar Reservoir which is located in Bukit Berapit. The water supply is
channeled to areas of Seri Iskandar including UTP, UiTM, BBSI industrial areas,
Felcra Nasaruddin, Bota Kanan, Lambor Kanan and Pulau Tiga.

The water quality is being monitored in every 2 hours and the water sample
will be tested in the laboratory to ensure it is within the qualification criteria
needed by Ministry of Health. The water quality can be continuously monitored
online.
