Summary:
TheMichiganCollegeAccessNetwork(MCAN)inclosepartnershipwithCentralMichiganUniversity,
EasternMichiganUniversity,FerrisStateUniversity,GrandValleyStateUniversity,Michigan
TechnologicalUniversity,OaklandUniversity,UniversityofMichiganDearborn,WayneStateUniversity,
andWesternMichiganUniversityseektohelpmoreMichiganstudentspursuepostsecondaryeducation.
Recentgraduatesfromthepartneruniversitieswillserveasadvisersinselectedhighschoolsacross
Michigan,particularlythosethatarelocatedincommunitieswithlowcollegegoingratesandlowadult
educationalattainmentrates.Workingalongsidehighschoolcounselorsandotherschoolprofessionals,
AdviseMIMembers(Advisers)willsupportstudentsastheymakethetransitionfromhighschooltoa
postsecondaryeducationinstitution.Advisersworkfulltimeandfocusonmentoringstudents
(especiallythosefromlowincomebackgrounds)throughthecomplexstepstowardcollegeenrollment.
Adviserswillprovidestudentsandtheirfamilieswithrelevantinformationregardingthebenefitsofa
postsecondaryeducation,preparingforcollegeattendance,andtheadmissionandfinancialaid
processes.
Commitment:
AdviserswillcommittoatermofservicebeginninglateJuly2015throughJune2016.These
appointmentsincludeamandatoryfourweektrainingsessioninEastLansingbeginningJuly.Alltraining
expensesincludingroom,boardandtravelarecoveredbytheprogram.InaneffortfortheAdvisersto
befullyenmeshedinthefabricofthelocalcommunities,Advisersareexpectedtoliveinthecommunity
inwhichtheyareassigned.Uponsuccessfulcompletionofthefirstschoolyearcommitment,Advisers
maybeinvitedtoreturnforonetotwoadditionalschoolyearsofservicetoAdviseMI.
PrimaryResponsibilities:
Interactingonadailybasiswithhighschoolstudentsandfamiliesintheassignedhighschooltoprovide
relevantinformationaboutpostsecondaryeducationandthecollegechoice/financialaidprocesses:
Encourageeachstudenttoconsiderabroadrangeofappropriatecollegechoices
Developacomprehensivecollegetimeline,includingapplicationdeadlinesforadmissionand
financialaidforeachstudent
Helpeachstudentcompleteandsubmitadmissionsandfinancialaidapplications
Assisteachstudentininterpretingcorrespondencefromcolleges,includingoffersofadmissionand
financialaid
Organizegroupeventsthatencouragestudentsandtheirfamiliestoconsider,planfor,andapplyto
collegesanduniversities
Visitclassrooms,assemblies,andclubmeetingstoofferservicesandemphasizethenecessityof
postsecondarystudy
WorkwithlocalcommunitygroupsparticularlyLocalCollegeAccessNetworks(LCANs)to
providecollegeaccessservicesoutsidetheschoolsettingandhours
Hostregularworkshopsforthefamiliesofstudentstodiscusstopicsrelevanttocollege
preparation
Organizecollegevisitsandcollegerepresentativevisits
Establishproductiveworkingrelationshipswithprincipals,schoolcounselors,andteachersinassignedhigh
schoolaswellasothercommunitybasedcollegeaccessprofessionals
Assess,inconsultationwithMCANandthehighschool,theparticularassetsandneedsofassigned
school,andadaptprogramsandactivitiestofillgaps,reinforceexistingactivities,andavoid
duplication
Activelyseektheadviceandcounseloftheonsitesupervisoratassignedhighschool
Assistintheassessmentandlongtermsustainabilityoftheprogram
AssistMCANtoidentify,collect,andinterpretkeyprogressandoutcomedatatoevaluatethe
effectivenessofAdviseMI
Submitmonthlyprogressreportstotheprogramdirectordocumentingprogressandoutcomedata
RepresentAdviseMI,asrequestedbytheprogramdirector,topotentialsupportersandtoother
interestedparties
Maintainexpertiseinadmissionsandfinancialaidadvising
Participatefullyinfourweeksofresidentialtrainingeachsummer
AttendallbimonthlyprofessionaldevelopmentsessionsprovidedbyAdviseMI
Inconsultationwiththeprogramdirector,seekoutandparticipateinotheropportunitiesfor
professionaldevelopment
Qualifications:
Bachelorsdegreefromapartneruniversityinanymajor,witha2014or2015graduationdate
Abilitytoworkeffectivelywithstudents,faculty,andstaffincludingthosefromdiversebackgrounds
Previousexperiencedemonstratingstrongleadershipabilities,influencingothersinapositive
mannerwhileachievinggoals,andeffectivelycommunicatingideasandgeneratingsupportforideas
Abilitytoworkindependentlyandanalytically,exercisediscretionandgoodjudgment
Excellentverbalandwrittencommunicationskills;proficientcomputerskills
Abilitytomanagemultipleprojects;strongplanningandorganizationalskills
Demonstrateprogramdevelopmentandmanagementexperience

Compensation:
Annualcompensationwillinclude:
Servicestipend($24,000),Educationaward($5,730)*,andhealthinsurance.
*Uponsuccessfulcompletionoftheservice,membersareeligibletoreceiveaSegalAmeriCorps
EducationAward.Theeducationawardmaybeusedtopayeducationalcostsateligiblepostsecondary
educationalinstitutionsand/ortorepayqualifiedstudentloans.
