Background of study
Translation is the one important thing that was used by people
for collecting information. Whatever the information form,
textbook, journal, newspaper, etc. Sometimes many people are
faced the information in deferent language. They do the
translation work for getting more information in deferent
language; they change language to another language, as Catford
said the translation may be defined as the replacement of textual
material in one language (SL) by equivalent textual in material in
another language (TL) (Catford: 1965).
Catford is one of the translation expert who taken out
translation shifts in doing translation. By shifts it means
departures formal correspondence in the process of translating
one language or source language (SL) to another language or
target

language

(TL).

Catford

also

said

that

formal

correspondence is any TL category (unit, class, element of

structure) which can be said to occupy, as nearly as possible
(Munday: 2001).
Translation shift considers two kinds of shifts, shift of level
and shift of category. Shift of level that a SL item at one linguistic
level has a TL translation equivalent at a different level while
shift of category divided into four kinds, structural shift, class
shift, unit shift, and intra system shift.
After Catford classifyed translation shift into two kinds of
shifts, the author wants to analyze the translation shifts in Al
Quran English version. Therefore, Al Quran is always to open to
analyze and interpreted by various kind of tools, method, and
approaches in order to describe the truth of Al Quran content.

Here are the examples of differences in interpreting Al Quran

which translated by different translator:
Surah Al Mulk: 1 3

By Yusuf Ali translation
Blessed be He in whose hands in dominion; He over all things
hath power.
By Dr. Ghali translation
Supremely Blesses is He in whose hand is the kingdom, and he
is ever-determiner over everything.

By Yusuf Ali translation

He who created death and life, that He may try which of you is
best in deed: and He is the exalted in might, the oft-forgiving.
By Dr. Ghali translation
Who created death and life to try you whichever of you is fairest
in deeds: and He is the ever-Mighty, The ever-forgiving.

By Yusuf Ali translation
He who created the seven heavens one above another: No want
of proportion wilt thou see in the Creation of (Allah) Most
Gracious. So turn thy vision again: seest thou any flaw?

By Dr. Ghali translation

Who created seven heavens as strata (i.e., layers, one above
the other). In no way can you see in the creation of The AllMerciful any disparity; so return your gaze; (Literally: "your"
beholding) do you see any rent?
There is a method that called translation shifts which told in
the first describes as a changing grammar in SL to TL. This
translation shifts method will help translator when he could not
find the meaning in SL. Base on this explanation above, it seems
a lot of differences in translating Al Quran are influenced by
culture and language understanding of Al Quran when translated
into English language. In this research will analyze the translation
shifts in translating Al Quran in order to find an acceptable
translation.

In education side author tries to introduce the translation

shifts method when college student translate same textbook,
journal, newspaper, etc. Besides that, author analyzes Al Quran
in order to engage college student to read Surah Al Mulk for
getting easy in their study.
B. Problem Statement
In arranging this paper, author formulated the problem in the
following one research question:
How does the translation shift in translating Al Quran English
version especially in surah Al Mulk?
C. Purpose of study
Base on problem statement, purpose of this study is to
analyze and identify translation shift in translating Al Quran
especially in surah Al Mulk.

D. Research Methodology
a. Method of data collection
For this study, author used qualitative descriptive method.
The author analyzed and identified translation shift in surah Al
Mulk English translation.
b. Data analysis
After collecting the data, the author analyzed the translation
shift in surah AL Mulk English version; as a result surah Al Mulk

Englsih version became source language. The author analyze

verse by verse if the translation shift occur in translation. Also, he
searched the grammatical changing in SL to TL.
E. A bit of theoretical background
Definition of translation
People make a language for communicating and giving
information each other. Furthermore, the language that people
use is different. Many people do translation for getting the point
of view from information they need; for instance Indonesian
Muslim people need information for their holy book, Al Quran. It
uses Arabic language; thus, they need to change Arabic language
as SL to another language, Indonesian or English language.
According to catford gives definition of translation is the
translation may be defined as the replacement of textual
material in one language (SL) by equivalent textual in material in
another language (TL) (Catford: 1965).
Translation shifts
Catford is one of the translation expert who taken out
translation shifts in doing translation. By shifts it means

language

(TL).

Catford

also

said

that

formal

correspondence is any TL category (unit, class, element of

structure) which can be said to occupy, as nearly as possible
(Munday: 2001).
Translation shift considers two kinds of shifts, shift of level
and shift of category. Shift of level that a SL item at one linguistic
level has a TL translation equivalent at a different level while

shift of category divided into four kinds, structural shift, class

shift, unit shift, and intra system shift.
Category shifts is happen when there is a changing and
shifting in translating in formal correspondence. The first kind of
category shifts is structural shift. According to munday who take
what catford said that the most common form shift and to involve
mostly a shift in grammatical structure (Munday: 2001).
Second, class shift is happened when shifting occur in part of
speech; for instance, the word

in the beginning of

surah Al Mulk as a verb is translated into English Blessed be He

become a phrase. The next kind is unit shifts; there are shifts
where the translation equivalent in TL is at a different rank to the
SL.
The last intra-system shifts munday says that it takes place
when the SL and TL proses approximately corresponding system
but

where

the

translation

involves

selection

of

non-

corresponding term in the TL system (Munday: 2001). For

example

the plural noun in Arabic, underline words,

becomes singular noun in English He may try which of you is
best in deed.
