I want to acquire deep knowledge about theoretical computer science and programming

paradigms. Therefore, I want to pursue Masters in Computer Science. In next few paragraphs, I
will explain my background and experience leading up to my decision to apply for Masters.
Personal BackGround and Its Influence On My Decision to Apply
I come from a family where education is given a lot of importance. My grandfather was a teacher
and my father is a mechanical engineer. My elder brother, who earned his bachelors in
Information Technology, co-founded a software and services company and grew it to 850
employees. However he recognized that US masters education will help him expand his horizon.
So, he joined UCLA Anderson and earned his MBA. Now he works at a Sequoia Capital backed
Pre-IPO SaaS company in Palo Alto and leads important initiatives.
These family experiences have made me strongly believe that knowledge and skills gained from
education will help me succeed in every stage of life. Therefore, it is very important for me to
continuously focus on improving my skills and gain knowledge in field of my interest from
reputed sources. This is one of the primary reasons behind my desire to join to graduate
programs in computer science.
Academic and CS BackGround
My desire of getting involved in computer science started with interest in mathematics and
curiosity to understand the functioning of computer. I got 100 out of 100 in State Board exams of
Mathematics in 10th Standard and I was among the 0.1% of over 1 million students.
I have completed my BTech in Information & Communication Technology from Dhirubhai
Ambani Institute of Information & Communication Technology(DAIICT) . As a part of
undergraduate curriculum, I have undertaken wide-range of subjects such as Discrete
Mathematics, Probability, Stochastic Simulation, Cryptography, Graph Theory, Data Structures
and Algorithm. They have helped me understand the intrinsic of computer science.
Learnings from Internship Experience
I have a keen interest in contributing to the open-source softwares which are part of daily work.
and one such organization is LibreOffice(LO). I started contributing to LO from 2012. In 2013, I
got selected for GSOC( Google Summer Of Code) where I spent the summer of 2013 working on
project called "Slide Layout Extendibility". My project focused on LibreOffice
Impress(Presentation module which is similar to MicroSoft Office) to provide the user to create
new slide layout as well as provide an option of editing slide layouts. I was also invited by
Google to attend Annual LibreOffice Conference in Milan,Italy where I presented in front of 200
developers.
Though getting involved in huge codebase of LibreOffice was tough in initial stages, the
internship gave me a very good experience of software development process and helped me
understand the significance of every step of process, like debugging, testing and use of code
management tools (e.g Git).

Research Plans
I have always liked to map theoretical concepts into real life problems and provide a solution
with practical implementations. My final year BTech project involved research on graph theory.
My focus of future research will be on issues which can be solved by theoretical computer
science and also work on its practical implementation. For example how a solution to a
problem in graph theory can solve even basic challenges of our daily life and make life more
productive such as shortest route algorithm used in GPS applications. Some of other subjects
which interest me are Cloud Computing, Distributed Computing, etc.
Why SJSU
I believe that SJSU,with its comprehensive facilities, will be an ideal place for my graduate
studies. Firstly, I am very impressed by wide range of research areas, including my areas of
interest such as User Interface and Distributed Computing, demonstrated by competent SJSU
faculty. Secondly, the diversity of students and an active department will be helpful in
motivating me towards excellence. Thirdly, SJSU, being situated in silocon valley, would enable
me to get good internship and/or work experience from companies such as Facebook, Google.
Overall, graduate studies at SJSU will help me promote my long- term goal of becoming
software-architect.
