Harmonic current, power factor, filter, compensation

[Industry Overview]
Todays automation equipment benefits us with convenience and cost savings from higher production efficiency, but it also
brings significant power distortion problems such as harmonics, reactive power, and non-linear loads that can lead to
energy loss, increased costs, and many other power quality issues.
Applications and Sources of Harmonics in Industries
- Metallurgy and petrochemicals industries: rectifiers, converters, inverters
- Chemical and electrolysis industries: calcium carbide furnaces, electric soldering, inverters
- Mechanical industries: inverters, electric arc equipment
- Metal, paper, plastic processing and textile industries: rectifiers, inverters
- Transportation industries: rectifiers and inverters for electric vehicles, electric motorcycles and metro systems
- Automobile manufacturing industry: soldering equipment, car painting equipment, battery chargers and inverters
- Telecommunication, medical and construction industries: Server stations, EPS, UPE, converters, chargers, inverters
Power Quality Inspection & Measure
A) Check the power system circuit for the following:
a) What is the transformer capacity?
b) How is wiring installed? (Ex: Y connection, D-delta connection, 3-phase/4 wire, 3phase/3wire)
c) Where is the phase lead capacitor installed in the power system?

B) Check the equipment loading:

a) What is the system loading? (Ex: light-duty or heavy-duty)
b) What is the load of the equipment that causes harmonics? (Ex: harmonic source may come from inverters, electric
arc equipment, electric soldering, UPS, or other sources)
c) Evaluate the system characteristics.

C) Evaluate the power quality and analyze the measurement point according to the system loading status:
a) Analyze the power quality if the equipment connects to the main power line. Measure Point 1 measures the power
quality for central control and compensation.
b) Measure Point 2 measures the power quality for group control and compensation.
