SUNDAY
OF THE
TRIUMPH
OF
ORTHODOXY
Ke
Amin
Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy is celebrated on the First Sunday of
Great Lent.
It is the joyous Commemoration of the Victory of the Iconodules over the
Iconoclasts by the confirmed decision of the Seventh Ecumenical
Council.
The Hymns of Vespers, Matins and the Divine Liturgy pay tribute to the
rightful restoration of Orthodox Icons as being essential to the
worship and Devotional Life of all Faithful Christians.
To remind us of the great significance of the restoration of Holy Icons as
an essential part of our Orthodox Worship of God and veneration of
His Holy Saints and Heavenly Hosts, the Clergy and the Faithful
process around the church holding a variety of Holy Icons.
The Procession is halted every so often while certain Hymns are chanted
and the Priest pronounces the Anathemas against the enemies of
Divine Truth.
Each Sunday of Great Lent has its own special historical and Spiritual
Theme and this period was especially significant for Catechumens
who were preparing for their Holy Baptism and thus, Entry into the
Holy Church of Christ.
The theme of Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy concerns the great
Victory of the True Faith the Divine Truth of Almighty God, which is
... the Victory that overcomes the world... (1 JOHN 5 : 4)
Furthermore, the Icons of our Saviour and His Holy Saints bear witness to
the Divine Truth that we are ... created in the Image and Likeness
of God. (GENESIS 1:26)
We become Sanctified and Restored to our original God-Likeness
through our constant Spiritual Struggles, Fasting and Purification
(Repentance-Confession and Holy Eucharist) as Gods living Image.
The connection of the great Victory over the heretical iconoclasm with
Lent is purely historical because the first Triumph of Orthodoxy
occurred on this particular First Sunday of Great Lent.
The First Sunday of Great Lent originally commemorated the Holy
Prophets of God such as St Moses, St Aaron and St Samuel.
The Divine Liturgy Alleluia verses and Sacred Readings/Lessons that
are appointed for this day reflect this older purpose.
The Epistle of St Paul is a completion of his Epistle to the Hebrews 11: 2426 & 11: 32 12: 2. The Catechumens of the early Church heard the
Epistle concerning the Old Covenant men who lived by their
unwavering Faith in a Divine Promise, the eventual Fulfilment of
which they themselves did not live to witness.
After the Righteous Faithful of the Old Covenant were mentioned, St Paul
wrote: ... and all these, having obtained a Good Testimony through
Faith, did not receive the Promise God having provided
Something better for us, that they should not be made Perfect apart
from us.
The Sacred Gospel Lesson is from the Holy Gospel according to St John
the Divine and Beloved Theologian, which ends with an explanation
of the Something better that is mentioned by St Paul. (JOHN 1 : 43 51),
Our Lord Jesus Christ told His Faithful Disciples and Apostles that they
and we, too - would ... see greater Things than these... (meaning
His Great Divine Miracles).

Moses,
He continued: ... Truly, truly, I say to you: hereafter you shall see
Heaven open, and the Angels of God ascending and descending
upon the Son of Man...
The Catechumens of the early Church and the Faithful Disciples of Christ
past and present, who were and are preparing for Holy Pascha
will all eventually see the inauguration of the New Age, which is the
Fulfilment of all Divine Promises, and the Glorious Manifestation of
the Eternal Kingdom of God through the Incarnation of Christ in His
Holy Church.
