Proceedings of the One Day Farmers Awareness Program on

CLIMATE CHANGE AND ITS IMAPCT ON AGRICULTURE
One day Farmers Awareness program was conducted on 30-01-2010 at Auditorium,
Agricultural College (North Block), GKVK, UAS, Bengaluru. Farmers from different districts
and officers from line department govt. of Karnataka were invited to participate in this one
day program. About 150 farmers from various pats of the State, 105 line department Officers
and about 130 Students have registered and participated in the program. In addition to this
most of the KVK coordinators of UAS, Bengaluru and Dharwad also attended. Participants
have been provided folders containing the literature on Climate change (folder), book on
Global Warming and Climate Change and its impact on Agriculture (Kannada version) along
with note pad and pen. Food arrangement was made for the participants
The first inaugural and technical session was held under the Chairmanship of
Dr.P.G.Changappa Vice Chancellor, UAS, Bangalore.
The program started with invocation by Miss. Shruthi.
Dr. H. Shivanna, Director of Research UAS, Bengaluru welcomed the guests,
speakers and participants.
Dr. M.B. Rajegowda, Professor of Agrometeorology, UAS, Bengaluru has briefed
about the topic on Climate change and its impact on agriculture to the audience. He also
highlighted the Changes in rainfall trends in different districts of the State and cropping
pattern in few districts along with the seasonal shift in rainfall required for agriculture. He
also briefed the audience about the impact of raise in temperature on spread of pest and their
impacts on Mango flowering and yield. Further Prof. Rajegowda emphasized that the farming
community should take up their cropping system and day to day agricultural operation based
on the climate changes occurring. He also informed the house that this type of programs are
organized to create an awareness in the minds of farming community about the climate
changes and its impact on agriculture and the Agro Advisories to be followed by the farming
community to overcome the adverse effect of Climate change on agriculture in view of
realizing the potential yield of the crops.
Shri.N.C. Muniyappa Principal Secretary, Department Agriculture, Government of
Karnataka, Bengaluru addressed the audience and suggested to take up documentation of
floods, drought and soil along with nutrient losses in soil has to be assessed. Measures have to
be taken to minimize the runoff water to avoid the flood situation that has created havoc in
Northern Karnataka during 2009. Contingent crop plan for different agro climatic regions
have to be worked out. Sri. N.C. Muniyappa also suggested that Pest and disease occurrence
as influenced by prevailing weather should be forecasted and information should be provided
to the farming community to minimize the use of pesticide. Further he emphasized that
effective forecast on cyclone and unexpected rains during harvest seasons should be provided
to minimize the losses during harvest season.
Prof. B.K.Chandrashekar, Leader of BCCI-K and former Education Minister Government
of Karnataka, Bengaluru released the book on Climate change and its impact on agriculture in

Kannada version published by University authorized by Dr.M.B.Rajegowda,

Dr.N.A.Janardhanagowda and Dr.T.K.prabhakarasetty and translated to Kannada by Dr.
Dr.Ushakiran. Further he advised the authorities to conduct this type of programs at taluk
level inviting all farming community and educate the farmers on global warming and its
effects on crops. He also suggested to educate the farming community to adopt water
conservation techniques and judicious use of power for agriculture. He also advised the public
to minimize the use of Vehicle to reduce the atmospheric pollution. Further he narrated the
activities of BCCI-K and future programs.
Dr.N.H.Ravindranath Scientist, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru explained about how
Climate Change leads to major problem for developing countries like India and China. He
briefed about the problems of food production variability in future due to this changes and the
countries that are likely to loose in their food production. He explained the causes for the
climate change over the Globe. He recommended to take up some immediate steps to
overcome the anticipated climate changes and minimize the shortage of food production and
anticipated food crises as population increasing.
Dr.M. Mahadevappa Former Vice Chancellor, UAS, Dharwad suggested to develop
crops/genotypes which suitable to present climate change scenario and to maintain the
existing genotypes of small millets which are highly nutritious that have capacity to with
stand moderate stress and adverse weather situations. He advised the farmers to take up the
crops that require minimum water for their growth. Further he strongly appealed the
authorities not to convert fertile lands in to industrialization or urbanization programs. Prof.
Mahadevappa read a poem on minor millets and their utility written by himself.
Dr R.S. Deshpande Director, Institute of Socio Economic Change, Bengaluru While
addressing the gathering he stressed on identification of locally adopted crops/varieties
suitable for climate change and also stressed the importance of marketing facilities for safe
disposal of agricultural produce. He has suggested that Scientists working on Climate Change
and Agriculture may have to work in collaboration with Agriculture Economists to identify
the suitable banking and marketing intervention.
Dr.M.K.S.Rao Scientist, IIHR, Bengaluru shared his observation on influence of increased
carbon dioxide concentration and increased temperature help many horticultural crops like
tomato, peas and beans. He also explained the probable changes in Temperature and rainfall in
the next 50 years and suggested few horticultural crops that can be grown in the changed
climate situation.
Dr.V. S.Prakash Director, KSMDMC, Bengaluru explained changes in rainfall pattern in
different seasons and also changes of rainfall based on nakshathra. He also explained the
drought situation in Karnataka during 2008 and 2009.
Dr Puttanna, Director, IMD, Bengaluru explained about inception of the Genesis of IMD and
activates of the Department at various levels. Further he briefed about their lopsided activities
in collaboration with State Agricultural Universities in the Country. The anticipated climate
change and its impact on rainfall in the Country mentioned.

Farmers Interaction Session:

The Post lunch farmers interaction session was held under the Chairmanship of
Dr.M.Mahadevappa Former Vice Chancellor, UAS, Dharwad and the Co-Chairmanship of Dr
R.S.Kulkarni Director of Extension, UAS, Bengaluru.
All most all the farmers have appreciated the topics discussed in the program and expressed
that this type of programs should be conducted at Taluk and Hobli levels covering all the
districts.
Dr.P.G.Changappa Vice Chancellor, UAS, Bangalore has informed the house that such
awareness programs will be conducted at KVKs covering all the districts. Since the climate
change is taking place at all locations faster than earlier, cropping system, crop varieties and
practices have to be changed to realize goog crop growth and grain yield. He also indicated
that the farmers should take the advantage of such awareness programs to minimize the crop
loss due to unexpected climatic hazards and to contribute to increase the agricultural
production.

Boregowda and his friends from Mandya expressed that forecast accuracy has to be
improved especially during Pre-monsoon (March May) season and also at Post harvest
season.

Smt. Savithramma from Doddaballapur pointed out that flower drops in crops during
first rainy period in summer and suitable remedy was suggested to change the date of
sowing to avoid the coincidence of flowering stage with first rains in summer.

Sri. Manjunath and his friends from Kolar They demanded that the Agromet
Advisories should reach them well in advance (2-3 Days) and full advisory covering all
the crops and agricultural operations to be taken should be communicated through mass
media and also through different govt. agencies.

Mrs. Dakshayani from Doddaballapur demanded that de-silting of the tanks should be
taken up to enhance the water capacity.

Smt. Manjula and her friends from Doddaballapur demanded that the Agromet
Advisories should be available through Kisan Call Centers.

Sri. Rajaiah and his friends from Nellukunte demanded that Temp. and RH information
should be included along with rain forecast to facilitate the silkworm raring farmers.

Sri. Veerabadraiah from Chitradurga district requested the house to promote the tree
based horticulture crops.

Sri.Mallikarjuna and his friends from Bijapur have appreciated the forecast issued by
the Agrometeorolgists and also demanded for de-silting of mainstreams.

Sri.Sannathimmappa from Tumkur sought the reason for hailstorms in a smaller area
and also early warning for such incidence.

Sri. Sundresha and his friends from Ramanagar demaned the forecast one month in
advance to make proper arrangements of crop selection necessary arrangement to
overcome the changed climate scenario.

Sri. Muddappa from Hiriyur demanded the house that number of cars in cities should be
restricted along with the ban of construction of new houses in cities like Bengaluru.

Many farmers have expressed the general problems like shortage of power supply and
drying of bore-wells, fertilizer shortages, non-availability of suitable variety crop seeds for
the late rains and inadequate marketing facilities etc.

Scientists have suitably responded to their questions and provided satisfactory solutions.
Dr.R.S. Kulkarni Director of Extension, UAS, Bengaluru has proposed the vote of thanks to
the participants, guests and speakers. He also advised the farmers to adopt the Agromet
Advisories prepared based on the prevailing weather situation in their day to day agricultural
activities to enhance the crop production.
