The observation is as follows:

Observe the status of indicator LEDs on the panel, such as the

RUN and ALM LEDs.

Observe the status of alarm indicators on the alarm box.

Observe alarm messages on the NMS (maintenance console).

Note:
Correct judgment based on observation is the key for fault analysis
and handling.

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION

ZXMSG 5200 Routine Maintenance

Unplugging
/Plugging

For a circuit card fault, plug/unplug the circuit card and external
connectors to clear the poor contact fault or processor abnormality.

Note:
Make sure that the card is hot-pluggable. Remember to wear antistatic wrist strap.
Replacement

Replace the suspected card with a new one to judge whether the
card is faulty or not. If the plugging/unplugging method does not
work, replacement method can be used. For the precautions during plugging/unplugging or replacing a card, refer to Chapter 7,
Card Replacement.

Self-loop

When the system is partially faulty, isolate the faulty part from
the related circuit cards or shelves to judge whether the fault is
due to mutual influence. For the card with both input and output
interface, take the self-loop test on the input/output interface to
isolate and remove the related problems.

Step-by-step

Pull out all cards except the power card. First, insert the control
card. After the control card works normally, insert the subscriber
cards in sequence. If the fault occurs again when one card is inserted, it is sure that this card or the card slot causes the fault.
Replace this card or backplane.

Self-check

When the system or the circuit card is powered ON again, the

system can verify the fault through self-test. In the power-ON
self-test of a common card, the panel indicators flash regularly,
which tells whether it has problem or not.

Cross-connection

If it fails to locate a sub-node fault, cross connect lines with signals

of the same nature to determine the fault point and fault type. For
instance, to judge whether 2M cable is faulty or not, use the normal
2M cable to have a check.

Pressing

Press chips, cable connectors, etc. to remove faults resulting from

poor contacts.

Alarm log analysis

View the current alarm and history alarm messages shown on the
NMS terminal. Judge whether the system runs normally and is
locating the faults. The current alarm message disappears after a
fault is removed.

Subscriber line
test

Measure the parameters of subscriber internal line, external line

and terminal through the subscriber line test system, to judge subscriber status.

Online test

Perform online test to trace the service flow, for judging and locating the faults.

Ping

For the narrowband service, use a line tester and a signal analyzer to test the line status and signaling interaction flow.

For the broadband service, use a line tester to test the ADSL
port and line.

To locate the faults of the service network and the NMS network,
ping the IP addresses of the nodes.

Chapter 2 Maintenance Overview

Routine Maintenance
Precautions
Follow some precautions during routine maintenance:

Keep the equipment room temperature and humidity normal.

Keep the environment clean and clear. Protect the equipment
from dust and dampness. Prevent rodents from entering the
equipment room.

Ensure stability and reliability of the primary power supply

of the system. Check the grounding and lightning protection
ground of the system periodically. In particular, check the lightning protection system before and after storm. Make sure it is
in good condition.

Establish a complete set of maintenance regulations for the

equipment room and standardize the routine maintenance
work. An exhaustive duty log is available to provide details
about system operation, version, data change, upgrading and
troubleshooting on day-to-day basis for follow-up analysis and
troubleshooting in the event of a fault. Prepare a work-shift
record to specify the responsibility clearly.

Never play games on the computer terminals. Do not install,

run or load any other software unrelated to the system on the
terminals. Do not use the computer terminals for other purposes.

Set different NMS passwords for different access rights. Place

them under rigid management and make changes to them periodically. In addition, keep the NMS passwords only accessible
to maintenance personnel.

To help the maintenance personnel get certain knowledge

about the equipment and network, arrange trainings for
them before they take the post. During maintenance operations, they need follow the instructions described in the
relevant ZXMSG 5200 manuals. To avoid any damage to the
equipment, wear antistatic wrist straps before touching the
equipment hardware.

Do not reset the equipment, load or change data casually, especially, the data of the NMS database. Back up the data before
any change. Do not delete the backup data until the equipment runs properly for some time (usually a week) after any
data modification. Take the record after any data change in
time.

Prepare commonly used tools and meters. Check meters regularly to ensure they work properly. Commonly used tools and
meters are as follows:

Straight screwdrivers and cross screwdrivers

Signal tester

Diagonal pliers

Network cable pliers

Check the spare parts regularly. Ensure that they are in a sufficient inventory and good condition. Keep them away from
moisture and mould. Keep the spare parts separately away
from those damaged parts. Label the spare parts for distinction.

Place the software packages and documents which might be

used during maintenance in an easily accessible place.

Make sure that the illumination in the equipment room meets

the maintenance requirements. Fix the damaged light as soon
as possible.

Handle the fault promptly. If the maintenance personnel are

failed to solve the problem, contact the local office of ZTE Corporation immediately.

Overview
Replacement of faulty cards is a commonly used and very important maintenance method during daily maintenance. We recommend that the equipment maintenance personnel, before replacing a card, should contact the related technical personnel or ZTEs
local service engineers for technical support and guidance.

GIS Card Replacement

Introduction

The GIS cards are hot-swappable. It means that it is possible

to replace the GIS card when the equipment is power ON. It is
not required to turn OFF the power supply of the sub-shelf. The
GIS card works in the active/standby status. When a GIS card
becomes faulty, there is no influence on the service of the unit.
The maintenance personnel can replace the faulty GIS card at any
time.

Preparation

Based on fault observation and analysis, verify that the card is

faulty and needs to be replaced. Verify that the spare part is well
functioning, and the model and program of the spare card are
identical to those of the faulty card. Prepare an anti-static bag, an
anti-moisture bag, a classified cartoon, and some adhesive labels
for labeling.

Procedure

To replace the GIS card, perform the following steps:

1. Wear an anti-static wrist strap.
2. Pull the clips of the fault card outward and downward with one
hand using moderate force. When the card detaches with the
slot and ejects, hold the lower edge of the card with the other
hand, and gently pull the card out. During this process, avoid
touching components or circuits on the card with the hand.

3. Place the removed faulty card into an anti-static bag lined with
an anti-moisture bag, and label the bag to indicate the card
model, program version and the word Faulty. Place the faulty
card into a carton as per the classification. Label the carton to
facilitate consequent identification.
4. Verify the name of the spare card and insert it into the corresponding slot in the shelf by pressing the clips on the card with
a thumb and push the card with moderate force until the clips
are tight, which means that the card is in position.
Verification

After the card is inserted, there will be a self-test process which

may take some time. If the self-test succeeds, the indicators start
normal indication and the service resumes, indicating that the replacement has succeeded. If the card self-test fails, namely if the
self-test does not stop, the final indication is abnormal, and the
service of the related unit does not resume, the replacement has
failed. Check whether the spare card is damaged or whether the
fault is on another card.

Note:
Copy the above data to the GIS card.

Power Card Replacement

Introduction

For the ZXMSG 5200 system, the power cards POWER H and
POWER K are available. For the two types of power cards, the
replacement procedures and precautions are the same. Here,
POWER H card is taken as an example.
The POWER H card does not support hot swapping; namely, it is
strictly forbidden to replace the POWER H card when the equipment is power ON. Be sure to turn OFF the power switch before
replacing the card.

Preparation

Procedure

Based on fault observation and analysis, verify that the card is

faulty and needs to be replaced. Verify that the spare card is well
functioning, and the model and program of the spare card are
identical to those of the faulty card. Prepare an anti-static bag, an
anti-moisture bag, a classified cartoon, and some adhesive labels
for labeling.
To replace the Power H card, perform the following steps:
1. Wear an anti-static wrist strap.
2. Turn OFF the switch of the faulty POWER H.
3. Pull the extractor of the faulty card outward and downward with
one hand using moderate force. When the card detaches with
the slot and ejects, hold the lower edge of the card with the
other hand, and gently pull the card out. During this process,
avoid touching components or circuits on the card with the
hand.
4. Put the removed faulty card into an anti-static bag lined with an
anti-moisture bag, and label the bag to indicate the card model,

program version and the word Faulty. Place the faulty card
into a carton as per the classification. The carton should also
be labeled to facilitate consequent identification and proposal.
5. Verify the name of the spare card and insert it into the corresponding slot in the shelf by pressing the extractor on the
card with a thumb and push the card in with moderate force
until the extractor is caught, which means that the card is in
position.
6. After inserting the POWER H, turn ON its power switch.
Verification

Check whether the indicators are in normal status and whether the
service has resumed. To minimize influence on services, the card
should be replaced in the time section when the traffic load in the
lowest.
If the final indicators are in abnormal status after the replacement,
the replacement has failed. Check whether the spare card is in
good condition.

Other Card Replacement

Introduction

For the ZXMSG 5200 system, the other cards refer to the service cards and subscriber cards, such as the GADLC, GVDLC, ALC,
DLCC, GPOI and CEE cards.
All the other cards are hot-swappable. It means that it is possible to replace the card when the equipment ower is ON. It is not
required to turn OFF the power supply of the sub-shelf.

Preparation

Procedure

Based on fault observation and analysis, verify that the card is

faulty and needs to be replaced. Verify that the spare card is well
functioning, and the model and program of the spare card are
identical to those of the faulty card. Prepare an anti-static bag, an
anti-moisture bag, a classified carton, and some adhesive labels
