PHASE 1 LESSON PLAN ASSIGNMENT

Read through this Phase 1 Lesson Plan Project Assignment to get an overview of the project as
a whole.
Next, please download the whole set of documents related to the lesson plan in the zip file:
https://d396qusza40orc.cloudfront.net/shaping2paths/week2/phase1_all_files.zip
You will be using the template, rubric, instructions, and sample lesson plans to help you as
you work on the lesson plan. You can also read the instructions and download each page
separately if you are not able to download the zip file.
This project is to create a lesson plan that includes topics from our course. Phase 1 of your
lesson plan project will include 2 topics (integrated skills and alternative assessment). Phase 2
in Week 4 will include additional topics from the course. Your project is GRADED, and includes
peer and self-evaluations. To complete Phase 1 of this project, follow these 3 steps:

Step 1. Create and Submit a Lesson Plan

Review and download the following documents, either individually or in a single compressed
(zip) file (see above for link):
a. Phase 1 Lesson Plan Template Instructions, with details about filling in the template:
https://class.coursera.org/shaping2paths002/wiki/phase1_lesson_plan_template_instructions
b. The blank Phase 1 Lesson Plan Template. Use the template so that you can create your
lesson plan with all the required elements. You must use the Template provided to create
and submit your lesson plan. You can use either one of these formats:
Word .doc format:
https://d396qusza40orc.cloudfront.net/shaping2paths/week2/phase1_lesson_plan_templ
ate.doc
or
plain text format (.txt):
https://d396qusza40orc.cloudfront.net/shaping2paths/week2/phase1_lesson_plan_templ
ate.txt
Download and save the file on your computer. Always keep a copy of your work for yourself.
When you finish filling out the Template, save your completed lesson plan as a .pdf or plain
text document (.txt) before uploading to the Lesson Plan Phase 1 submission page:
https://class.coursera.org/shaping2paths002/human_grading/view/courses/1/assessments/3/submissions
You may also use the >Lesson Plan Project link, available from any page in the left sidebar
under COMMUNITY, to submit.

Coursera does NOT accept .doc or .docx formats.

c. The Phase 1 Lesson Plan Rubric: https://class.coursera.org/shaping2paths002/wiki/phase1_lesson_plan_rubric

The rubric will help you evaluate your lesson plan, and will also be used in Steps 2 and 3.

d. A sample lesson plan for one of the two groups: children/young learners or teens/adults.
(You are welcome to review samples for both levels, but you will be able to submit only one
lesson plan for grading.) These are models for you to follow in writing your own lesson plan:
Children-Young Learners: Phase 1 Sample Lesson Plan for Children/Young Learners:
https://class.coursera.org/shaping2paths-002/wiki/phase1_sample_lesson_planyoung_learners
Teens-Adults: Phase 1 Sample Lesson Plan for Teens/Adult Learners:
https://class.coursera.org/shaping2paths-002/wiki/phase1_sample_lesson_plan_teensadults
e. Submission: Once your lesson plan is ready, submit it on the Lesson Plan Phase 1
submission page (upload in the required format, using the >Attach button, or copy and
paste): https://class.coursera.org/shaping2paths002/human_grading/view/courses/1/assessments/3/submissions
You can revise and resubmit your lesson plan until the deadline. (The >Lesson Plan
Project link is available from any page in the left sidebar under COMMUNITY.) Your peer
reviewers will see only your final submission. Do not wait until the deadline to submit, as
Coursera will not able to handle the load.
See the Lesson Plan Phase 1 Submission Guide at
https://class.coursera.org/shaping2paths-002/wiki/lesson_plan_phase1_submission_guide
for a step-by-step description of how to submit your lesson plan.
Remember: You can upload only a .txt or .pdf document. You can copy and paste a
plain text document, but you will lose all formatting that way. You can revise and
resubmit your lesson plan until the deadline. You can access the submission page
through the >Lesson Plan Project link from any page in the left sidebar under
COMMUNITY.
Your lesson plan must include the two elements from the course: Integrated skills and
alternative assessment.
----> The deadline for uploading your lesson plan is 11:59 pm Pacific time on Monday,
February 23 (beginning of Week 3). You will not be able to submit anything after that time.
DO NOT wait until the last minute to submit your work! Coursera will not be able to handle the
traffic. NO LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Note: Coursera does not accept .doc or .docx formats. Please save your project to your
own computer as .txt or .pdf. You may copy and paste or upload these files to the
assignment page. Be sure to review your work to ensure that the formatting is correct if
you copy and paste it.

Step 2. Peer Evaluations

If you have submitted a Lesson Plan on time, you will have the opportunity to do Peer
Evaluations and a Self-evaluation, both of which are part of your grade for this course. You will
do a Peer Evaluation for at least three lesson plans written by people in our course. Coursera
will present them to you one-by-one. Use the same Lesson Plan Rubric (see above) to give your
peers a grade on each part of the Lesson Plan:
https://class.coursera.org/shaping2paths-002/wiki/phase1_lesson_plan_rubric
For help with your evaluations, please see the screencast where course instructor Jeff
Magoto talks through a lesson plan evaluation. This will give you one perspective on how to
evaluate a lesson plan: https://class.coursera.org/shaping2paths-002/lecture/25?preview=1
See the Lesson Plan Phase 1 Peer and Self-evaluation Guide for help in submitting the peer
evaluations successfully: https://class.coursera.org/shaping2paths002/wiki/lesson_plan_phase1_evaluation_guide
Please perform the three Peer Evaluations on the Lesson Plan Phase 1 submission page
(the same place where you submitted your Lesson Plan) by 11:59 pm Pacific time on
Saturday, February 28:
https://class.coursera.org/shaping2paths002/human_grading/view/courses/1/assessments/3/submissions
DO NOT wait until the last minute to submit your work! NO LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL BE
ACCEPTED.

The Peer Evaluation activity is GRADED.

Be sure to use the Phase 1 Lesson Plan Rubric to help you evaluate your colleagues
lesson plans:
https://class.coursera.org/shaping2paths-002/wiki/phase1_lesson_plan_rubric
You may use the >Lesson Plan Project link, available from any page in the left sidebar
under COMMUNITY, to submit your peer evaluations.

Use the World Clock Time Zone Converter to convert your local time to Pacific time:
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html
Note: You will not be able to view or submit peer evaluations until after the lesson plan
submission deadline, and then only if you have submitted a lesson plan before that
deadline. If you don't see the Peer Evaluation button activated, and you have
successfully submitted a Lesson Plan, check back again in a few hours before asking for
help.
You are welcome to do more than the minimum number of peer evaluations; this is helpful for
others.
It's a good idea to do your peer evaluations early, so that you have more time for your selfevaluation. You will receive your peer evaluations from others after the self-evaluation deadline
has passed.

Step 3. Self-Evaluation
You will see a Self-evaluation button activated on the Lesson Plan submission page after you
have submitted at least three Peer Evaluations for others.
https://class.coursera.org/shaping2paths002/human_grading/view/courses/1/assessments/3/submissions
The deadline for submitting your self-evaluation is 11:59 pm Pacific time on Monday,
March 2. You will not be able to submit peer or self-evaluations after this date.

The Self-evaluation activity is GRADED.

Use the same Phase 1 Lesson Plan Rubric to help you evaluate your own lesson plan:
https://class.coursera.org/shaping2paths-002/wiki/phase1_lesson_plan_rubric
You will get results for the whole project after the deadline for self-evaluation submission
has passed.
You may use the >Lesson Plan Project link, available from any page in the left sidebar
under COMMUNITY, to submit your Self-Evaluation.

Important deadlines:
Step 1: Lesson Plan Phase 1 deadline is 11:59 pm Pacific time Monday, February 23. No
lesson plans will be accepted after this time.
Step 2: Peer Evaluations Phase 1 deadline is 11:59 pm Pacific time Saturday, February 28
Step 3: Self Evaluation Phase 1 deadline is 11:59 pm Pacific time Monday, March 2. No peer
or self-evaluations will be accepted after this time.
Please do NOT wait until an hour before midnight to submit your work! Coursera will
not be able to handle the traffic.
