A
LETTER FROM THE TE

magazine
Put a spring in your step

March officially houses the beginning of spring even though we Wisconsinites know better. Were well prepared for a few more snows and freezing temps.
Yet, while those gentle showers, warmer temps and colorful flowers might still
be a few weeks away, that doesnt mean we cant enjoy a renewal all our own.
Why not let March be the month you rejuvenate your passion for well-being?
Whether this means youll focus on taking your fitness practices to the next level,
supporting or improving your mental health, improving your nutrition, engaging in a hobby or pursuit you care about, March is a great time to turn your attention to yourself and we want to help you along this journey.
One of things we love best about Natures Pathways is the opportunities to try
new things and adapt them to our needs and desires. Tips found in our expertwritten articles might appeal to you right off the bat, or they might inspire something inside of you, motivating you to try something youve never before had the
guts or background knowledge to do!
TAKE IT FROM ONE OF OUR READERS:

Im not planning to have a child any time soon, so I used to simply flip past the
Healthy Kids articles and pregnancy-focused pieces in the magazine. But I have
been feeling quite a bit stressed and lost in my life lately. One article suggested
providing help or support to others as a way to rekindle ones spirit, and it suddenly
occurred to me: Just because the child-focused articles in Natures Pathways dont
have an immediate impact on my life, doesnt mean that they wont be life-changing
for someone else. So I gave a few copies to my friends who are parents or are planning to be.
This simple act of service paid off! It was so rewarding to hear my friends say,
Wow! Thats the type of birth experience I want, or to see them try out new ways
to connect with their children.

March 2015 | Natures Pathways

A life out of
balance equals
hormones out
of balance!
Could your symptoms be
trying to get your attention?
......................................................................
By Randi Mann, NP

f you are female, know a female or live

with a female this is a very important
subject! When a womans hormones
are out of balance she will not feel well;
its as simple as that. In todays fast-paced

10

Natures Pathways | March 2015

world there are lots of women who are very

successful at their jobs and take great care
of their families but unfortunately dont
take very good care of themselves.
Many women today are suffering from
hormonal imbalances and may even be
too busy to recognize the unique warning
signals that their bodies are trying to give
them. Think of your symptoms as being
similar to the warning lights on your cars
dashboard designed to get your attention so you can act before something
major happens to your engine.
Are you experiencing any of these
uncomfortable hormonal imbalance
symptoms?
Hot flashes or night sweats
Fatigue or lack of motivation
PMS
Sleepless nights
Vaginal dryness
Loss of sex drive
Foggy thinking or memory issues
Anxiety or depression
Irritability or mood swings
Weight gain
Joint and muscle pain
Tender breasts

Bladder issues
Changes in periods
Painful sex
Depending on your age, in addition to
feeling poorly when your hormones are
out of balance, you may be at greater risk
for chronic illnesses such as osteoporosis,
heart disease and even breast cancer.
Unfortunately, many women (and their
partners) do not understand the power of
our various endocrine hormones. These
amazing chemical messengers can help us
to feel great and operate at our best or
make us feel miserable. The most common
hormones that may become unbalanced
due to age or high stress and poor self-care
include the thyroid, adrenal and ovarian
hormones (estrogen, progesterone and
testosterone). Most American women are
done menstruating by age 51 but some
women stop as early as 40 or as late as
age 58. This change in ovarian function,
coupled at times with new onset thyroid
dysfunction, an overcommitted lifestyle,
poor diet, limited physical exercise, and not
enough fun and play is a bad combination.
It is a great idea to track your symptoms
www.naturespathways.com

on a personal symptom chart each month
to get in touch with what is going on for
you. This is one of easiest and best ways to
determine the pattern and severity of your
symptoms related to your menstrual cycle
(if you are still cycling). It is also a great
way to get you to tune into your body even
if you are no longer cycling.
It is best to fill your chart out on a daily
basis about the same time each day for
two to three months. You then will have

a record of the changes in your symptoms

over time. Mild symptoms can usually be
relieved by an improved diet, more rest
and exercise, and better stress management. If you have multiple symptoms that
you identify as moderate or severe, please
see a hormone expert who can help you
sort out what is going on for proper diagnosis and treatment.
As a hormone expert myself, I often will
initially order female/ovarian and adrenal
hormone testing for my patients and may
follow up with thyroid testing next depending on their symptoms. Ovarian and adrenal
hormone testing is done at home, is quite
easy to do and can show which of your levels
are low or out of balance. We can then decide
the best course of treatment for your unique
symptoms and health situation. I find most
of my patients prefer custom-dosed, bioidentical hormones as they tend to offer timely
symptom relief and minimal side effects
along with decreasing risks for bone loss. It is
very important to seek care from a medical
professional who is skilled and experienced
at hormone management to help you.
At our center we have helped thousands

of women feel like themselves again

through proper diagnosis and hormone
management and lifestyle guidance. Please
join us at our monthly End Hormone
Havoc seminar to learn more about the
symptoms of hormonal imbalance and
treatment options so you can feel your best
no matter what your age or where you are
in your hormonal transition!

Looking to
improve at your
favorite sport?
Look
to yoga!
.......................................................................
By Lauren Quella and Jayne Lang

re you a runner? Golfer? Basketball player? Swimmer? Bicyclist?

Weightlifter? You may want to
consider adding yoga into your training
regimen.
The popularity of yoga has been on the
rise over the past decade. In 2012, over
20 million Americans practiced yoga
compared to 15.8 million in 2008, according to a study by Yoga Journal. It would

come as no surprise that the popularity

of yoga among athletes is on the rise as
well. Sports Illustrated reported on the
growing number of professional athletes
from all sports utilizing yogas benefits.
Many professional and college sports
teams are integrating yoga into their training programs. Why? Theyve learned the
many physical and mental benefits yoga
possesses for athletes, and you can too.

When you think of yoga, flexibility is probably what comes to mind first. You might
picture a person in a contorted pretzel twist.
The good news is you dont have to be flexible
before starting yoga. In fact, practicing yoga
will increase your flexibility dramatically.
Why is flexibility important to athletes?
Cardiovascular activity and weight
training shortens and tightens the muscles.
Tight muscles and joints are more prone to
soreness and injuries. However, practicing
yoga stretches and lengthens the muscles
to make them more pliable and elastic.
Yoga poses also open up the joints that are
tight from overactive use in your sport. For
runners and cyclists, the tightness is typically found in the hamstrings and hips.
For swimmers and volleyball players, the
shoulders can be stiff. By lengthening the
muscles and achieving greater flexibility,
your joint range of motion is increased,
your recovery time is shortened and your
chance of injury is decreased.

Increase flexibility

When you participate in a sport, certain

muscles and joints bear the burden more
than others. If you are a tennis player or
baseball pitcher, you likely experience
muscle dominance on one side of the
body. For golfers, there is the repetitive
twisting to one side. Yoga, on the contrary,
www.naturespathways.com

brings strength and balance to the entire

body. Over the course of a yoga class, all
muscles, including large and small groups,
are activated and worked equally.
In particular, yoga improves core
strength. More than just your abs, the core
also includes muscles in your back and
hips. Core strength is critical for improved
posture, better balance, reduced back pain
and easier breathing. Your core also acts as
the stabilizing point from which power is
generated. Strengthen the core and youll
be able to produce more power for your
swing, serve or stride.

Improve mental focus

In athletic competition, mental toughness

is just as important as physical toughness. More often than not, athletes focus
on training their bodies but forget to train
their minds. Yogis are experts at connecting their mind, body and spirit. To practice yoga is to understand and control the
body. Holding a challenging pose helps
build that mental toughness. Listening
to your body as you flow through poses
fosters that connection between your

www.naturespathways.com

mind and body.

Yoga can also provide a mental breather
since it is about unity and self-reflection,
not competition. For people that are used
to competing, yoga provides a refreshing
break. Its a chance to focus on yourself
and not on the person next to you.
When you begin to incorporate yoga
into your sports training, youll discover
many benefits both physical and mental.
No matter the type or level of athlete
you are, yoga will have a positive impact
on your athletic performance and help
protect you from injuries that can sideline
you from doing what you love.

Whats the best way to get

started?

Begin slowly when adding yoga into

your schedule.

Try different classes to find one thats

right for you. If you train intensively, try

a more mellow class. For cross-training,
look for an intense class. To help with
muscle tightness, try warm or hot yoga.
Inform your instructor of any physical limitations so that he or she can

suggest modifications for poses.

As always with yoga, listen to your

body and mold your practice into what

you need it to be.

If you are concerned about starting yoga,

please consult a qualified health professional first.

Adoption

Adopting a dog, cat, bird or bunny from a local animal shelter or

rescue organization is more environmentally friendly than buying
directly from a breeder. Overpopulation of pets contributes to
waste, and adopting a shelter animal can help maintain the pet
population while providing pets with a new home.

Buying in bulk

Purchasing pet food and other products in bulk saves you trips to
the store and reduces the need for additional packaging. Consider
chipping in with other pet owners and splitting large bags of food
or other supplies if you have too much surplus. You also can donate
any extra food or supplies you dont use to an area rescue group.
When buying, look for products made from natural, organic
and recycled materials. Shop at local pet supply stores to minimize fuel consumption.

Pet foods

Seemingly endless selections of pet food makes it difficult to find

the right foods for your furry friends. Foods made of all-natural, organic ingredients tend to be the most eco-friendly. Check
to see where a particular food is manufactured. Foods that are
made overseas may not meet the stringent requirements placed
on food by North American regulatory bodies, and transporting
such foods consumes fuel and other resources, making them less
eco-friendly than locally produced foods.

Cleaning

Pet waste is not only a nuisance and eye sore, but detrimental to
the environment. Dog waste can be toxic to a lawn, causing discoloration and burns. Estimates suggest that dog waste may contain
around 23 million fecal coliform bacteria in a single gram. Dog
feces also can harbor heartworms, hookworms, roundworms and
many other parasites.
According to the United States Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention, pet droppings can contribute to zoonoses, which
are diseases animals pass to humans. When infected dog waste is
deposited on your lawn, the eggs of certain parasites may linger in
your soil for years. Anyone who comes into contact with that soil
runs the risk of contact with those eggs. Promptly picking up and
properly disposing of waste can reduce the likelihood of a potential parasite infestation.

March madness:
Prepping children for
the big game every
month of the year
A focus on special needs
.............................................................................................
By Celeste Brennan, RN, BSN

March brings to mind endless basketball games and tournaments,

people filling out brackets and betting on whose team will win. I
recall March 2006 very clearly as I gave birth to my son during the
final playoffs and the sounds of basketball from the hospital room
TV helped drown out my fear, What if he is not healthy? Fortunately for us, he was perfect. But many other families do not have
this same experiences.
What exactly does the term special needs mean to you, or make
you think of when you hear the term? I have asked a friend and
colleague of mine to share with you her journey into the depths of
what it means to her, and avenues she has taken to find support,
hope and normalcy. I hope that this true story will enlighten all who
read it, as well as shed some light onto this very important issue
within our society. Please enjoy and encourage others to share their
stories too. You are not alone in your journey with your child(ren).
Commentary by Meridith N. Starling, CISW, MSSW

Does your family have a special need?

Many families do, and its more common than you might think. A
special need could be a high-achieving child who has anxiety, or
a child with a physical or learning disability. It might be a family
member battling depression or a teen with an eating disorder. Its
anything that takes guts, heart and bravery that is special. Life
can be extra challenging when living with a special situation out
of the norm. It can also feel isolating, but know you are not alone.
Life with these challenges is not about the big game. Closer to
the truth, it is about the day-to-day madness and not just in
the month of March but each and every day of the year!
Id like to share my story with you and how I found support.
Maybe you can relate in some way.
In 2004, I became a parent of a child with many special needs.
At that time, I was in a fast-paced nursing career and was stopped
in my tracks when my son, Gavin, was born at 28 weeks gestation,
16

Natures Pathways | March 2015

weighing only 1 pound 3 ounces. After four long months in the

NICU, living day-to-day praying he would even survive, Gavin
was finally able to go home. Our child would have special needs
for many years to come.
In preparation for his homecoming, the medical supply
company backed up their truck in my driveway and started to
unload equipment. Gavin was on oxygen, breathing treatments,
monitors, a feeding pump and supplies for getting fed through a
tube right into his stomach, and a total of 12 medications.
Even as a trained nurse my head was spinning. My thoughts
turned to other parents with no medical background and
wondered what it was like for them to take care of a medically
fragile infant.
The timing of Gavins discharge was not advantageous as it
was November and the start of cold and flu season. If my little
baby contracted any sort of infection it would be life threatening
for him. Consequently, I was home bound with him for close to
five months. I felt very isolated. This was in 2004, where Internet research was just starting to take shape and social media was
a term we would not hear for quite some time. There were chat
rooms; however, they were not easily accessible and were a breading ground for predators. It was a very difficult time in my life.
Fast forward to 2015. Gavin is, for the most part, medically
healthy. The challenges we face now are all related to a brain defect
most likely from his rough prenatal and postnatal development
including a severe hypoxic episode (lack of oxygen to the brain)
where he nearly died on day 10 of his life. Gavin has severe cognitive delays, is nonverbal and is just now learning how to eat solid
foods, not to mention a variety of behavioral issues. Needless to
say, it is still a difficult period of my life.
In my case, whether it was in 2004 or 2015, it is very easy to feel
alone. However, the biggest difference between then and now is
how social media has really taken off. Facebook, Pinterest, special
www.naturespathways.com

needs bloggers and online support groups help parents connect

with other parents and can prove to be a valuable tool.
Through my own experience, Ive found that it is essential to
connect with others who understand, and who provide support and
friendship. Whether they are in my community or online and live
across the country, they have made a huge difference in my life.
I personally follow several special needs bloggers. Reading
these blogs is often essential to my own sanity, especially when I
see what appears to be that picture-perfect family enjoying dinner
at a restaurant right after Gavin throws his sisters plate of food
across the room. Blogs can provide comfort, insight, ideas and,
my favorite, humor.
Being a parent of a child with special needs is not a job that I
can just quit when I have simply reached my limit. Through many
tears and many more smiles, this is a lifetime commitment to
my son who survived against all odds. So as I try and clean up
my daughters dinner from the restaurant floor with a handful of
napkins and lots of apologies to the waiter, I think to myself: I am
going to blog about this!

Getting to the heart

of womens health
Atypical cardiac symptoms in women
...............................................................................................
By Michelle Vanden Heuvel, RMA, RN

ith having just ended National Heart Month and this

month being Womens History Month, it is important
for the public to be aware of some important facts
regarding women and heart health.
According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is
the No. 1 killer of women. Heart attacks occur when blood flow
to the heart is either partially or completely disrupted, and as

the heart muscle is damaged due to the lack of oxygen from the
disrupted blood flow. People experience various signs and symptoms. Most people are familiar with the typical symptoms of a
heart attack: pain or pressure in the left side of the chest which
can sometimes radiate down the left arm, and shortness of breath.
However, women can exhibit atypical or less common symptoms
in the same, very serious, situation.

Due to differences between the anatomical layout of males and

females, the symptoms women experience may not be readily
recognized as the symptoms of a heart attack. Instead of the traditional crushing pain related to having a heart attack, women
sometimes experience more of a fullness or squeezing sensation.
Also, typically, the discomfort will be felt toward the left side of the
chest. However, in women, it is not uncommon for the discomfort
to be in the middle of the chest, on both sides of the chest, or even
off to the right side of the chest.
Many times when people are experiencing cardiac symptoms,
men and women alike, they will mistake or confuse it for a stomachache, heartburn, or even the flu. Due to the varying degrees and
locations of pain and discomfort, cardiologist C. Noel Bairey Merz,
M.D., recommends that any pain or discomfort above the waist that
is abnormal, unusual, or without a known cause should be reported
to a health care provider. This is one of the reasons it is so important
to be aware of what is normal for their body and for them.
In addition to the pain and discomfort, shortness of breath,
dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, vomiting and fatigue are some
of the other less commonly known symptoms of a cardiac event.
However, those symptoms can also be related to other non-lifethreatening issues.
According to WebMD, there are a few things to remember
when experiencing symptoms of a heart attack: dont wait to
seek care, waiting too long can be the difference between life and
death, and call 911 to get an ambulance to take you to the hospital.
Driving yourself or having a friend or family member drive you
may take too long and may put yourself and/or others in danger.
Even though most people do not like to spend unneeded time
or money on emergency room visits, it is better to go in and be
checked out rather than to assume it is something less serious.

By Kristie Ritter

t was July 2014 and for the last time I looked

in the mirror and decided it was time to take
charge of my life. I was determined to get
healthy with the definitive goal of feeling better
about myself.
Just how was I going to do this? I knew it would
involve a lifestyle change, but how drastic was I
willing to go? I tried fat burners and cleansers, but
I also knew eating right and exercise would need to
take high priority for an evident change. This was
going to be hard, as I love French fries and curse
at the thought of doing exercise for an extended
period of time.
I started to run and felt better about myself once
I completed the distance. Most days, however, I
found running to be more of an unwelcome chore
I had to complete, rather than something enjoyable or a source of
runners high. I needed a workout that would inspire me, that
would be fun. Then I saw a Facebook picture of a friend elegantly
inverted (upside down) on a pole with an artistic, beautiful form.
I heard of pole fitness, but come on, really?

certainly was not looking for that. Still,
curiosity got the better of me and I
wanted to learn more. I took to the Web and found Appleton had
a local studio. The pictures showed women of all shapes and sizes
partaking in exercise it just so happened there were poles in the
room to aid in the workout.
I read the bullet points of the health benefits associated with
pole exercise and they really resonated with me: strength training,
muscle toning, flexibility, body sculpting, fat burning and most
of all, confidence. One of the little-known truths of pole fitness
outside of the pole community is that it is an extremely empowering activity for participants.
My first class was in August. I was hesitant yet excited, and I
definitely wondered what I was doing! From that moment on, the
instructors welcomed me and gave me the encouragement to take
this newfangled journey and embrace it. Pole exercise is not at
all what you might imagine it to be in the undesirable sense, but
rather a sport that takes endurance and practice. The movement
to get pole into the Olympics is making strides; the International
Pole Sports Federation applied in January to Sport Accord, one
big step closer to international recognition for this incredibly
challenging sport. These women are strong physically on the pole
and in their personal and professional lives. Getting to be part of

Its been about six months and I have discovered a new passion
and drive. I am having fun while exercising and feeling rejuvenated not to mention the remarkable, supportive women I have
met. In these past few months I have watched my body transform.
I have lost 26 pounds since staring pole by eating right, integrating
cardio and strength training into my daily routine, and continuing to run. Pole has made me stronger and healthier, thus giving
me the ambition to keep going and take on other new challenges.
Pole has taught me to trust myself on a whole new level. I also
participate in cross training classes, like fabric exercise through
the use of a hammock suspended from the ceiling and other types
of fitness classes that may have intimidated me in the past. As my
body has changed, my willingness
to use it in new ways has increased.
Its true that I have lost a lot, but I

Children find

Shakespeare
...................................................................................
By Jessica Lindsay

wenty years ago, I joined my classmates on a bus ride to American

Players Theater in Spring Green.
There, Hamlet wove its three-hour spell over
us. The character we talked most of during the
dark ride home was not Hamlet or Ophelia,
but the kings ghost. This ghost was a raging
thing that spat and spewed as he told his tale.
He was gross and shocking and completely
valuable in my emotional education.
Why was he valuable? He showed me

pain I never knew existed. Knowledge of

another persons emotional experience
opens us up and deepens us. It is true that
literature and theater are valuable tools
in developing empathy. Shakespeare in
particular offers us characters who experience universal emotions joy, despair,
fear, rage and they experience them in
highly entertaining stories. These stories
are perfect tools for parents and teachers

Compassion

One of the greatest gifts Shakespeare gives

children is the ability to experience another
perspective. Ten years ago, the National
Endowment for the Arts (NEA) put out a
short film called Why Shakespeare? In
the film, the NEA shares testimonies from
a program it developed in 2003 called
Shakespeare in American Communities.
It was, by 2005, the largest Shakespearean
tour in American history, with 30 theater
companies visiting 1,000 schools. The
campaign has grown to include 40 theater
companies in 2014.
In the film, young people are shown on
makeshift stages, holding glass candles,
wearing Halloween masks, standing on
stools, or wearing plastic crowns. The
program challenges students to memorize
and perform Shakespearean plays in the
original 16th century language.
Director Julie Taymor explains the
power of Shakespeares words and characters: He uses a different part of your brain
and allows you to get out of your life
whether its a puny little life or a life thats
poor or a life thats too rich and you havent

experienced what its like to go to the other

side: its about liberation. This experiencing the other side is the very heart of
compassion. Any good theater can open
this up for a child; Shakespeare can offer
students this valuable multiplicity while
exposing them to timeless stories woven
into the fabric of our American culture.

Confidence

Not only does performing Shakespeare

develop compassion in young hearts; it
also builds confidence. Participants in the
NEA program offer enthusiastic testimony
to the confidence they built. One student
shares, Before Shakespeare, I would,
like, always be inside my shell. I wouldnt
want to do nothing. Another student
shares how his friends talked about dropping out of school, but he was inspired
by the Shakespeare program to follow
his dreams. A director from the program
shares the story of one high school student
who joined who was closed up and angry
and frustrated. She was about a week away
from being initiated into a gang. But she
felt like maybe she wanted to do something

MARCH MADNESS SALE ON NOW!

different with her life. So she came to us.

And she learned she had choices.
In addition to the NEA, the Folger
Shakespeare Library also works to spread
Shakespeare to American children. In Folgers video, Why Shakespeare Matters, we
see elementary students wrapped in rubber
snakes, stirring a cauldron and crying,
Double, double, toil and trouble! Fire burn
and cauldron bubble! Another class of
elementary students wield wooden swords
and practice the fights between Hamlet and
Leartes, Macbeth and Macduff.
One Folger educator shares, You see
these very shy kids speak these words, and
theyre changing them. Their language
and their lives will never be the same.
Young people from all walks of life find
that digging into the complicated lives
and language of Shakespearean characters gives them confidence to dig and root
deeply into their own lives.

Studies at The Cooperative School, a private, nonsectarian primary school in Appleton serving grades 1

Your best
birth
..............................................
By Mary E. Smits, CD, CBE

oure pregnant. If you are more

than a couple months along,
undoubtedly by now, everyone you
know who has experienced childbirth has
told you their horrific birth story. You hear
tale after tale until it seems giving birth
is destined to be a nightmare from which
you cannot escape. It will be a day or two
to suffer and survive in order to finally
hold your precious babe. Although you

once held fond thoughts of possibly having

a peaceful, loving birth, those thoughts are
now no more than a fickle fantasy. Then, in
passing, you overhear a new mother share,
I had the most wonderful experience I
could have ever imagined!
Shes a stranger, so its not as if you can
run over to her and ask, How did you do
it? So you go on with your day without the
answer, and convince yourself she must be

delusional.
But what if she did do it? Then how did
she do it?
What causes a birth experience to be
wonderful? Is it having an epidural, education, knowledge, breathing patterns and
practice, a well-selected birth team, feeling
well supported, a peaceful environment or
possibly good communication?
Ive taken some time to survey women
who reported having wonderful births and
asked them to complete the following statement: My birth experience was wonderful because... Then, I compiled the results
by grouping similar statements and put
them in order by most often mentioned as
being integral to having a wonderful birth.
Here are the top 15 results!
1. I acquired birth education and/or
knowledge.
2. I experienced support for my
personal choices.
3. My doula provided knowledge,
confidence and encouragement.
4. My doula provided support for my
partner so he could support me.
5. I made decisions with care and

Your go green goal

for 2015: Start a
compost
pile
...........................................................................................
By Sarah Everson

ant to go green for 2015?

Composting is a great way to
go green and be earth friendly.
Simple steps can prevent pollution by
diverting materials that produce methane
from landfills. The end product compost
enriches soil fertility, increases retention
of water and air in the soil, and stimulates
healthy root development of plants.

Step 1

The first thing to do is collect carbon-rich

materials (wood chips, leaves and/or used
potting soil). Mix these with nitrogen-rich
materials (fruit and vegetable waste, spent
coffee grounds and fresh grass clippings).
Meat, oily or greasy food, and manure
should never be added to a compost pile.

compost. Another green option is to place

the compost pile in a chicken wire cage in
one corner of your garden. Rain water will
then carry nutrients to the garden plants.
Finished compost appears dark and
crumbly, and it has a sweet earthy smell.
Remnants of the original material may be
present; these can be picked out and mixed
into the next patch of compost. Compost
can take up to 12 months to produce. The
time to finish depends on a number of
factors, including how much volume is in
the pile, the variety and types of feedstock
used, and the type of bin used among other
things.

Step 3

Now mix three parts of the carbon material to one part nitrogen material, making
sure to always cover the nitrogen material.
Make sure there is about 40 to 55 percent
water mixed with the materials. Go green

medical
myths
Setting the
record straight
.......................................
By John Sowinski, R.Ph.

ave you ever watched a situation unfold in front of you,

only to take a step back and wonder how everything
came to be in such an enormously upside-down state?
That is exactly how I feel about the current condition of the
medical community. Everywhere I turn, Im seeing examples of
things being upside down, and people insisting that up is down
and down is up.
Were living in a time with more information and medical
evidence available to us than ever before, yet your doctor may
still be telling you things that just dont fit the evidence. Doctors
and the rest of the medical community like to say they practice
evidence-based medicine, but too many times, that just isnt the
case. Below are just a few of the especially pervasive myths that
the current-day medical community cant seem to shake.
You have probably heard that eating fat makes you gain weight.
Its a common misconception, and is only strengthened by the
popularity of fat-free food options. However, it just isnt that simple.
It is true that, gram for gram, fat has more calories than other
sources such as proteins or carbohydrates but fat is also an
essential part of a persons diet. The brain is made of fatty acids, so
you need to consume some of those essential fatty acids in order to
keep it healthy. For years the accepted way to lose weight has been
a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet. However, its clear that after years
of recommending such diets we still have an obesity epidemic.
Another common diet-related myth is that, in order to lower
your cholesterol levels, you need to eat less cholesterol. In a similar
way, this one seems pretty straightforward, but once again, its not
that simple. The body actually produces cholesterol, so when we
eat less, the body will compensate by producing more.
The body needs cholesterol; it uses cholesterol to produce sex
and adrenal hormones. Adrenal hormones are produced to control
26

Natures Pathways | March 2015

inflammation in the body, inflammation that is often caused by stress.

When internal inflammation is present, the body needs to produce
extra cholesterol in order to make the hormones that combat the
inflammation. This is what causes those high cholesterol levels we
see when testing. So, rather than focusing on the cholesterol ingested
in a patients diet, its important to understand the stressors that are
leading to the extra inflammation. If the cause of the inflammation
can be identified and treated, the body wont need those extra adrenal
hormones, and will therefore produce less cholesterol.
There is one more myth that Ive written about before, and
Id like to touch on again in this article. So often I hear people
concerned that they might take too much vitamin D, because it
is a fat-soluble vitamin and can build up in the body. The truth
is that the evidence does not support this. In fact, as Ive written,
daily doses of vitamin D are not only safe but the most effective
way to keep levels of vitamin D at optimum. Taking only 400
international units daily will help you avoid rickets, but is not
enough to support countless other functions in the body, not the
least of which is your immune system.
The medical community likes to claim they practice evidencebased medicine, which means they treat you using therapies that
are based on evidence that those therapies work. However, there
are so many myths out there that continue persist, which keeps
us from finding the most effective treatments. To quote Steven D.
Shapiro, M.D., chief medical and scientific officer for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Physician Services:
Only about a quarter of what we do has strong evidence and we
only do that about half the time.

12. I had the support of midwives.
13. I was at home in my own bed or surroundings.
14. I received prenatal chiropractic care throughout pregnancy.
15. I practiced optimal body movements to encourage optimal

baby position.

According to the women surveyed, in order to have a wonderful birthing experience, the following suggestions would be
beneficial.
During your pregnancy seek knowledge of your body, labor
and birth. Prepare your body for optimal birthing through chiropractic care and by paying special attention to optimal body positioning and movements that encourage optimal fetal positioning.
During these months of preparation, learn to really listen to your
body and what it requires to achieve a state of calm, comfort and
relaxation.
Prepare your mind. Your thoughts are best focused on what
birth experience is possible for you. Dismiss negative birth stories,
and release any fears of labor that linger by counteracting them
with education, research and evidence-based information.
When choosing where to have your baby, be sure to know the
atmosphere is or can be transformed into a space that is
peaceful, comfortable and calm. Whether you choose hospital,
birth center or home, it will be to your advantage if the space
provides a sense of familiarity and safety.
When considering which family members and friends to have
alongside you on your labor day, choose loving and supportive
people who will respect your labor and birthing goals, wishes and
choices.
When forming your professional birth team, such as your
medical care providers and professional labor assistants, choose
knowledgeable, caring, patient individuals who support your
personal choices and allow you time to make decisions with care
and thoughtfulness. Midwives top the survey list for medical care
providers associated with wonderful birth experiences!
Hire a doula. Doulas provide knowledge, confidence and
encouragement, while supporting your partner so he can best
support you. They can also facilitate communication between
you and your medical care providers. Doulas were mentioned in

a new garden. Do this by adding 3 to 4 inches of compost to the

plot and tilling it into the first 6 inches of the soil. Existing gardens
also benefit from a layer of compost each fall or spring. Compost
promotes root growth and attracts earthworms to the garden,
which help to aerate the soil.
When it comes to potted plants, mix no more than one part
compost to three parts soil. Watering with compost-steeped tea
is a great way to deliver nutrients to plants, especially when transporting plants and young seedlings. Compost tea is a liquid fertilizer brewed from regular compost.
Another go green option: Simply reuse a burlap bag for
creating compost tea. Fill it with compost and soak it in water
for 24 hours. The compost nutrients will leach out into the water,
ready for direct application.
Remember, it is rather easy to go green and start a compost pile.
It doesnt matter what kind of soil you have at your disposal, mixing
compost with it will improve its quality safely and naturally. For more

Headaches
dont have
to be a pain
How chiropractic
care can help
........................................................
By Drs. Amy Nussbaum Schubbe and
Brad Donnermeyer

f you experience headaches, you are not alone; 42 million

Americans seek care for headaches each year.
Headaches can range from occasional dull throbbing pain
to intense pain that can be debilitating. According to the World
Health Organization, headaches are the most common disorder of
the nervous system. There are many types of headaches: migraine
headaches, cluster headaches and cervicogenic headaches.
According to a 2001 study from Duke University, researchers found that spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement for those headaches that originate in the neck,
and had significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of
tension-type headaches than a commonly prescribed medication.

This research shows that spinal manipulation can be an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that
originate in the neck.
Additionally, a majority of headaches can result from our poor
posture, our sedentary lifestyle and our increased use of handheld
electronic devices.

What can you expect when you visit a

chiropractic office

After taking a thorough health history, examination and possible

X-rays, a chiropractor will perform spinal manipulation to improve
spinal function and remove the stress on your nervous system. The
chiropractor will also recommend exercises to strengthen the area
and give advice on how to improve your posture, which will help
reduce muscle tension throughout the neck and upper back.
You do not need to continue to suffer from headaches.
Please contact a chiropractor today and say goodbye to your
headaches.

You burn it,

youll earn it
Giving a whole new
meaning to feel the burn
..............................................................
By Tammy Thyssen

re you struggling with your weight

loss yet? Every year we try new
things to get the results we want. But
we are always fall short. Why? When one diet
plan doesnt work we jump to another and try
the next new thing that comes around hoping
that will have better results. Media, TV and
food put our focus on quick fixes and calories rather than what really needs our focus in
order for us to get the results we want.
But you can lose weight through methods
that actually do work for you. It will take
longer than six months to master it, but little
by little you will succeed. For starters, you

need to decide what your body is: Are you a

train car jumper or a furnace?
Train car jumpers try new diets or pills,
the perfect meal plan, and quick exercise
programs that deliver fast results. Jumpers
tend to focus on counting calories, cutting
calories, eating very little, cutting certain
foods out 100 percent, allowing cheat days,
eating foods labeled with diet words and
phrases, and exercising until they are blue
in the face. Jumping from one train car to
another looking for something better is tiring
and eventually these jumpers fall off and get
run over by the car. Losing weight becomes

frustrating and hard work, so they just give

up and think itll never happen.
A furnace is someone who is in control
and always has a fire burning inside all day
long. If you burn wood to heat your home
then youll really understand where Im
coming from. There are certain woods that
burn hot and long and others that hardly
burn at all. Some woods shouldnt be burned
in the furnace at all.
When starting a fire, you start small and
smart. Starting with cedar, your fire will first
burn fast and hot, and produce a good bed of
coals to burn the next size of log and every
log that is added throughout the day. Stoking
the furnace throughout the day you have two
choices. First you can stuff it full, leaving it
to smolder and burn very slow at the start.
Eventually itll burn but there is not much
heat created until all the materials are on fire.
Your second choice is to add a few logs at a
time periodically throughout the day to keep
the hot burn burning all day long without
having to start a new fire every time you
stoke the stove.
Your body works the same way with food.
Some foods are good, some are great, some
are OK and some are no good at all. The
foods all burn at a certain rate within your
body, resulting in your metabolism rate.
Naturally your metabolism changes as you
age but you can control and take charge of it
if you choose to.
Putting your mind right and shuffling
through all the madness of dos and donts
and what to eat and what not to eat is overwhelming and hard work. We fix on words
www.naturespathways.com

like light, diet, fat free, no carbs, gluten free and less sugar,
but we forget to read what we are actually eating: the actual ingredients. If you know the truth, youll know what to look for. When you
eat right, youll burn right, youll lose right and youll be happy, right?
Choosing the correct foods and eating according to your daily
schedule is what is needed to get the results you want and to keep the
body you want every year. It isnt a magic pill, diet, gadget, certain
food, or one machine or program that will fix your lifestyle. It is
you: what you consume and how you live daily that counts.
Your body knows you but when you dont have a relationship
with it, it wont do what you want it to, no matter how many times
you abuse it. You are the boss of your body but if you dont treat it
right, it will rebel.
Listen to the most important thing: your body. Your body
knows how to respond to your workouts, how much time it needs
to recover and repair, and what it needs to get the results you want.
If you work with your body and get to know it, together youll
get to success. You have to believe it, think it and live it.

Reduce your
money-related
stress
Tips that make cents
......................................................................
By Sharon Paprocki, MAC, LPC, NBCC

ts that time of year again: tax time. You might be tempted to

turn the page or put down this article, instead, remember the
Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz and know you have
everything you need inside you to read on.
Looming tax due dates nudge us into looking at our financial
health. It is also an opportunity to revisit and take stock of major
changes that occurred last year that may have had a financial
impact on us. Did you marry or divorce? Was there a birth or
death? Did you buy or sell a home? Did you lose a job or change
jobs? And the list goes on. There is no doubt that it is natural to
wonder or worry about how you are going to pay or recover from
some of lifes changes. As you pay attention to what you are feeling
and thinking about this article so far, you might have made the
connection that many researchers have: finances and change often
add up to stress or should I say distress.
In her article, Is There a Connection Between Financial and
Mental Health? Kristie Lorette notes that when you are in debt,
you are in stress. When you lose your job, you have stress. When
you look at your bank account balance to try to figure out which
bills you can afford to pay this week and which ones youll have to
put off until tomorrow, this is a highly stressful situation. Money
and mental health are connected.
Makes cents. Now what?

Identify your thoughts, beliefs

and patterns about money

What you think affects what you feel, which influences what you
do or experience. By knowing what you think and believe about
money, you can then decide if these thoughts are productive and
supportive, or standing in the way of you experiencing money
differently. For instance, if you grew up being told, Money is the
32

Natures Pathways | March 2015

root of all evil, or your experience was, No, there isnt enough
money for [you fill in the blank], then you may have the belief that
having money is bad or you will never have enough. If these were
your beliefs, it would be understandable that when dealing with
money your natural response would be to feel significant stress,
frustration and fear. These reactions in turn can lead to either a
response of anticipating the worst-case scenario, or denying and
avoiding taking any action at all.
When you identify money-related thoughts that are skewed,
remember the words of Eckhart Tolle: We are not our thoughts.
You can choose to change the skewed thought and replace it with
one that is more productive. A small shift in our thought patterns
can be a game-changer and result in much less mental distress.
Instead of thinking in terms of there is not enough money, you
might choose to embrace the idea of abundance. An often-quoted
resource of healthy thinking patterns related to money and
mindset is Napoleon Hills Think and Grow Rich.

Know when to hold them

and when to fold them

Seek professional help. You may be able to handle doing your own
taxes. However, if you are stuck, need some help with debt or are
having some other financial issues, make an appointment with a
professional. You are not alone, and youre certainly not the only
one who has experienced financial stress.
Research has suggested that financial strain and debt are strong
risk factors for mental health problems and that we dont pay
enough attention to that connection, Dave Burdick of the Denver
Post states. Everybody thinks that everybody else is doing
better than they are financially. Dont fall into the trap of that
thinking pattern.
www.naturespathways.com

 finances can affect mental

health but it is as important
to realize that the connection
is a two-way street; your
mental health can affect
your financial health.
Besides paying for someones professional advice, there are
a few local resources that offer free financial coaching. Northeast Wisconsin Technical College provides financial coaching to
students, the Salvation Army website provides free information
and links for various financial situations, and Catholic Charities offers financial coaching, various low-priced classes and free
budget coaching: http://bit.ly/1CZJi7D.

Adopt a mental health and wellness routine

The point has been made that finances can affect mental health
but it is as important to realize that the connection is a two-way
street; your mental health can affect your financial health. Maybe
you have heard of retail therapy or know people with gambling
addictions; those are just a couple examples of the other side of
the street. It is important to address any issues of anxiety, depression, grief, guilt or conflict so we dont turn to a less productive
option that can have a negative impact on our financial health.
Yes, a licensed professional counselor can be a plus to your health
and financial teams.
May this tax time be your opportunity to explore and adopt
strong financial and supportive mental practices that will have
you cruising down a healthy two-way street of life.

When
hearing aids
dont
help
............................................................
By Dr. Stephanie Long, Audiologist

ccasionally I hear from someone who has been told

nothing can be done to help their hearing. I also hear this
from family members who say, My [husband, mother,
etc.] said there is nothing that can be done for my hearing. When
I hear this, I am saddened because it means that the person has
given up on better hearing.
To be clear, there are times when hearing aids will not help
but that does not mean there are no other solutions. Before giving
up on hearing aids, I always want to make sure that the person
has gotten good information and recent information. Just like
cell phones and computers, hearing aid technology has changed
dramatically in the last few years.
When I started as an audiologist over 20 years ago, we were
excited that hearing aids could be adjusted using a screwdriver
on the outside of the aid. Now the aids are digitally programmed
and literally hundreds of adjustments can be made. This flexibility
means that consumer satisfaction has improved. In addition, for
those with severe hearing loss, hearing aids can be programmed
to have more power available to them without feedback. These

two improvements in technology alone have increased who can
wear and benefit from an aid.
Other technology improvements, such as speech in noise
processing, offer additional benefits. For those who wear hearing
aids, Bluetooth microphones, TV adaptors and more increase
satisfaction by providing more situations in which someone with
hearing loss can hear well.
However, for those with profound hearing loss that hearing aids
really wont help, cochlear implants or bone-anchored hearing aids
(BAHA) need to be considered. To be fair, this is a major decision.
Cochlear implant and BAHA surgery are invasive procedures. The

www.naturespathways.com

physicians and audiologists who specialize in these devices can

share the risks, benefits and likelihood of success. Literally thousands of people have had these surgeries with great success. The
implant teams take in to consideration a lot of factors including
the degree and type of hearing loss, how long the hearing loss has
existed, and the health of the person to determine if an implanted
device will work.

Cochlear implants

A cochlear implant works for those with a profound sensorineural (nerve) loss. The implant consists of two main parts; the sound
processor is the part one can see. It usually looks like a larger
hearing aid that is worn behind the ear. The sounds of the world
are captured through this device, which then communicates with
the implanted portion.
A surgeon places this small device under the skin behind the
ear. The processor sends the sound information it has collected
and coverts sounds into the electoral signals that are dispersed
along a thin electrode array placed inside the cochlea. These tiny
electrodes stimulate the nerve fibers, which send sound signals to
the brain. These signals are what ultimately are translated into the
sounds of our environment.
Training the brain to understand this new input is part of the
process. The cochlear implant audiologist will assist by periodically adjusting the device as the patient does therapy to improve
their hearing. For those who are good implant candidates, this
device can open a new world of hearing.

BAHA

The BAHA system is a bone-anchored hearing aid. This system

works really differently and works for a different kind but no less
significant hearing loss.
These systems work for those with who have significant difficulties with the bones of the ear, eardrum or the ear canal; these
problems result in a conductive hearing loss. When these problems
cannot be fixed by an ear, nose and throat surgeon, a BAHA can
work. These systems can also work for people who have what is
called a mixed-loss problem with conductive and nerve hearing
loss as well as those with hearing loss in just one ear. These systems
have a sound processor that is on the outside of the head; sound is
detected here. Sound is then converted into vibrations, which are
transferred to the implanted device either through a magnet or an
abutment (something like a snap). These vibrations travel through
the bones of the head and to the cochlea.
The implant centers at the University of Wisconsin or Froedtert
Hospital are the experts in this area. In addition, consumer groups,
such as the Hearing Loss Association of America, have excellent information for living better with hearing loss. This is a good place to start
educating yourself if you have been told hearing aids wont help.

The Magic
of
Phil
....................................................
By Kathi Bloy

ow do you say goodbye

to your family at age 54,
knowing you wont see
them again this side of heaven?
Phil Blake is doing it with love,
grace and good humor.
Still, his wife, Donna, said, Its
very hard to watch your loved
one go away inch by inch. But
she added quickly, Gods been
really good to our family in letting
us make memories. That was my
biggest thing when I found out he
had leukemia and liver cancer and
probably wouldnt live more than
four to six months. I told the kids
we have to focus on making memories so that when Dads gone
we can say, Remember this. Oh, remember how fun that was, and
we can have him as part of us.
One of those memories was a very special weekend in January.

Natures Pathways | March 2015

Daughter Megan, 18, had pushed

to graduate from high school
while her dad was still here to see
her in cap and gown. The family
spent a weekend at a hotel in
Appleton, where hospice workers
could check on him every day.
When we got to the hotel on
Saturday; God gave Phil awesome strength. He was really energetic. We got Megan ready in one room and had her walk into the
other room in her cap and gown. Phil looked at her and Megan
looked at him and they just started crying. We got some of the
most amazing pictures of her and Phil and the rest of us for her
graduation, Donna said.
Its typical of the Blake family to make things fun, even in
the face of tragedy, according to Tina Pollex, a close friend of
the family. Theyre just such a great family, she said. Theyre
so much fun, and its contagious. You just want to be with them.
Theyre a family you want to help out.
Helping the family with medical and living expenses was
Pollexs goal when she suggested a Celebration of Support for Phil
through Community Benefit Tree (CBT).
I thought, being a 501(c)(3) and having donations be tax
deductible would help us to get donations from corporations. It
would be a lot easier than doing it all on our own. CBT gives us a
lot of direction and theyre going to walk us through every step.
They provide a lot of services and manage all the money.
www.naturespathways.com

The celebration on April 11 is planned around a Disney theme

and will be called The Magic of Phil, because Phil loves Disney
World and the beach. Pollex pointed out that the location, Game
Day Sports Bar in Appleton, has a lot of sand, a fitting location to
celebrate Phils love of the beach.
In addition to Megan, the Blakes have a son, Jordan, 23, and
two other daughters. Brittney, 25, was married June 28 to Andre,
and Phil walked her down the aisle. Megan and her other sister,
Ericka, 20, regret that their dad wont be able to do the same for
them. Phil and Donna also have a grandson, Ezrah, who is 4.
I hope Phil will be here for the celebration, Donna said. I
pray he is, but I dont think he will be. Hes declined so quickly. He
told me at the end of January that hes so tired, he doesnt know
how much longer he can fight.
Readers who are unable to attend Phils celebration can make
a tax-deductible donation online at http://communitybenefittree.

overthinking, worry or anxiety.

While a client might not realize how
sleep quality relates to body pain, headaches or other common therapeutic bodywork concerns, from my perspective it is
a very important factor. Why? Our bodys
main recuperation and reorganization
time occurs when we sleep.
When a client comes in for treatment
for an issue such as shoulder or low back
pain, I begin to manipulate soft tissue in
a way that causes adhesions in the area
to begin to break down, metabolic wastes
to be cycled through, and stuck energy
to be released. The body needs to draw
upon its energy reserves to deal with these
changes that occur in the soft tissue. Much
of the reorganization that happens in the
tissue after waste material gets flushed
out happens while we rest. When an individual isnt getting enough hours of sleep
(due to the inability to fall asleep), or isnt
getting quality sleep that includes enough
time spent in the deep sleep level of the
sleep cycle (due to waking up several times
at night), the bodys toxin elimination,
tissue repair and reorganization process is
hindered. When the body is unable to efficiently process changes in the soft tissue,
recovery from therapeutic bodywork does
not happen as quickly or effectively. In
addition, the area of the body experiencing
pain or tension doesnt receive optimal rest

and recovery time if sleep is insufficient or

interrupted, exacerbating and prolonging
the pain.
Secondly, getting enough sleep and
getting good quality sleep has a direct
impact on our mental well-being, which in
turn impacts our bodys ability to respond
effectively to stress. As stress has a very real
connection to tension held in the body,
the inability to deal effectively with daily
stressors due to lack of sleep can take a toll
on the body, registering as pain or tension.
Whenever I identify sleep quality factors
at play, I work with a set of acupressure
points indicated for overcoming insomnia and grounding the restless energy that
contributes to this issue. As I check in with
a client over the course of several sessions
regarding his or her sleep, I often notice
that it does improve in correlation with
regular therapeutic bodywork sessions
that integrate sleep points. And often, the
pain or tension concern improves significantly as well.

Bringing a

COMMUNITY TOGETHER
Anytime Fitness promotes health in more ways than one

sense of community is a big part of what makes small-town living

great. For the residents of New London and Winneconne, theres a
particular place where they feel that sense of community best but
the location might surprise you: its the local gym, Anytime Fitness.
What makes Anytime Fitness unlike any other spot in town? Like a greattasting and healthy recipe, its the perfect mix of ingredients; Anytime
Fitness not only has a passionate owner and talented, dedicated trainers, but
members who care about health and their community. This combination
makes for an inspirational environment free of judgment but big on positivity
and success. (Dont believe us? Just check out Anytime Fitness New London
and Winneconnes rave reviews online on their Facebook pages or Google!)

A burning desire to share

good health with others
New London and Winneconne Anytime Fitness owner Chris Polanco understands his members better than just about anyone. Its easy to understand
why: he himself has been one of them since 2007!
Theyre so convenient, he explains of the gyms. I would just bring my
duffle bag with me to any one of the different Anytime Fitness, go there and
work out.
The convenience, coupled with the friendly environment and great fitness
options inspired Polanco. He had become fast friends with then-owner of

BY REBECCA BENTZ

the New London Anytime Fitness, James Moyer, and asked him for advice on
opening his own branch.
Why dont you buy mine? Moyer proposed. Polanco was thrilled to find
owning New Londons branch was an option. He partnered with Moyer first
to try it out. After six months, he and the New London Anytime Fitness
was sold.
I always liked working out and I always did work out, but Ive always been a
salesman, Polanco says. I knew with my sales and marketing background that
I could make Anytime Fitness bigger and better than what it was. And he did.
The branch has added 300 more members in just the last two years. Bolstered
by that success, Polanco purchased the Winneconne location in June 2014. It
too has become an exceedingly popular part of the community.
But its more than Polancos sales and marketing background thats made
the two gyms successful; its also his passion and the passion of others that
keep members coming back for more chances to improve their health and
well-being.
This is the reason I bought into this, because I dont like to sell things I
dont believe in: I believe Anytime Fitness sticks out above the rest because
of us, the people the trainers, the managers, anyone who works here,
Polanco says. I dont want [members] to be a number here, I want them to be
a name; I want them to know theyre important, that their goals, their fitness
and their health are important to us. We really care and this isnt just a job for
us; its more than that. We love helping people.

A team like no other

A welcoming and positive environment is great, but it doesnt necessarily translate to
success. Thankfully, Anytime Fitness also has a great staff thats focused on helping
members lose weight or meet other fitness goals.
Our job is to make sure [members] understand all the equipment. Everyone
gets a free personal training session. They have the option then if they want to
buy personal training or they want to work out on their own no pressure.
We also have classes theres different style things that we do to accommodate pretty much everybody that comes in here, Polanco explains.
For individuals with big goals or who really want to take their fitness to the
next level, Polanco recommends individualized personal training. A trainer
keeps members accountable, while also cheering them on and making sure
individuals take things at the right pace for them. In addition to the hourlong personal training sessions, the gym also offers group training, including
boot camps and kickboxing.
Weve had people come in who have been 500 pounds, who would never
have walked into a gym before because they felt so judged. We dont want
anybody to feel judged, Polanco explains. Our heaviest person ever has already
lost 209 pounds in just 14 months with [one of the Anytime Fitness trainers].
But even those who arent interested in personal training have a home at Anytime
Fitness. Polanco urges people who want to make a healthy change to just get in the gym
and make a rewarding difference in their lives.

A reflection of the community

Polanco and the Anytime Fitness trainers arent the only ones
living the gyms mission of changing lives. The members at
Anytime Fitness are dedicated to helping others achieve their
goals as well.
When a new member joins the gym, others introduce
themselves and make sure the new member feels comfortable and knows that there are others to talk to. One group in
particular, The Golden Girls of Anytime Fitness, has made it
a mission to wellness both in the gym and outside of it. The
group organizes and participates in various charity events and
encourages new members. One Golden Girl in particular has
brought in 40 new members alone, helping those individuals
take the first steps toward changing their lives.
This tight-knit community aspect of Anytime Fitness
means members arent just exercising theyre
socializing (sharing healthy tips and recipes),
meeting new people and making new connections, and doing truly great things for their
community and those in need.
We have people writing corporate, talking
about how great our fitness center is, how
theyve never been to a gym like this, and
how the trainers and everybody help so much,
Polanco says. They come in and they feel like
theres a red carpet rolled out for them.
Its humbling yet inspiring to know how important a role his gyms play in their communities.
I love doing this, Polanco says. That a little Anytime
Fitness brought all these people together, people who would
have never met, and now they have these groups and donate to charity.

waiting for?

Mineral
makeup
101
.......................................
By Caitlin Brotz

ineral makeup has seen a huge

increase in demand as consumers become more aware of the
ingredients they are using. The desire to
use more natural ingredients that are free
of chemicals has given rise to the natural
makeup revolution.
But as quickly as the movement has
come about, its important to remember
that mineral makeups have been around
for a long time. The natural makeups are
a blend of crushed minerals and oxides.
Many cultures have used them as camouflage during war and as ceremonial paints;
you may even recognize them from the
mineral-kohl-lined eyes of ancient Egyptians like Cleopatra.
The benefits of mineral makeup are as
plentiful as the shades they come in. For
starters, there are many ingredients not
present, such as preservatives and talc,
which makes natural cosmetics a great
option. An added bonus is that the minerals have the ability to breathe. Synthetic
makeup has a tendency to suffocate your
skin like plastic wrap, trapping moisture
out and eliminating oxygen exchange.
Mineral makeup allows free exchange of
www.naturespathways.com

eliminating toxins and breathing, two of

your skins most important roles.
Because mineral powders are an inert
substance, they dont irritate skin the way
synthetic makeup can. The minerals are
also a natural anti-inflammatory, making it
great for people with sensitive or red skin.
Perhaps the greatest benefit of using
natural cosmetics is that mineral makeup
likes to sit on top of the skin, producing a
very reflective and dewy complexion that
people say is very natural looking after
all, its that natural beauty we all crave.

The functional
medicine
approach to
autoimmune
diseases
......................................................................
By Scott Vander Wielen, D.C.

he purpose of this article is to describe the functional

medicine approach to autoimmune disease. The research
describes autoimmune disease as an intolerance of self.
This is when the bodys own immune system attacks an organ
or other tissue in the body. Examples of autoimmune diseases
are: colitis, COPD, Crohns disease, Graves disease, Hashimotos
thyroiditis, irritable bowel syndrome, multiple sclerosis, Reynauds disease, rheumatoid arthritis, sarcoidosis, type 1 diabetes
and Wageners granuloma to name just a few.
When looking at any autoimmune disease through a functional
medicine lens, the mechanism causing autoimmunity is the focus,
not the organ being attacked. This mechanism is called molecular
mimicry. Molecular mimicry is what happens when food proteins

when an autoimmune

mistreated, the risk increases
for additional autoimmune
diseases to develop.
or an infectious organism enters the blood stream through the
intestinal tract as a result of a leaky gut. These food proteins, which
are very long from not being digested, are viewed as an invader. An
immune response is then launched throughout the body.
The immune system hunts to search and destroy any molecule
in the body that matches the invading food protein. This is where
molecular mimicry starts. When a tissue or organ looks identical
to that food protein, it gets attacked. This is true for any autoimmune disease, regardless of the organ or tissue in question. When
we look at the mechanism involved, we can begin to zero in on the
cause of the autoimmune reaction, not just the symptoms.
Molecular mimicry starts in the gut. The questions that must
be answered are: does the patient have any parasites, including H. pylori, yeast or bacteria that could be triggering immune
responses? Does the patient have any reactions to foods, including gluten, which can cause a multitude of immune responses?
Is the presence of heavy metals a factor? How are the patients
www.naturespathways.com

adrenals functioning? Is the patients family history a contributing factor? The answers to questions like these need to be known
and understood in order to begin the process of shutting off the
alarms within the immune system. This can only be accomplished
through a comprehensive health history and detailed physical
exam before any testing is considered.
Additionally, it is important to remember that when an autoimmune disease goes untreated or mistreated, the risk increases for
additional autoimmune diseases to develop. It is not uncommon
for a patient to have multiple autoimmune conditions when first
presenting for care. This is why it is very important to treat from
a place of knowledge.
As with any comprehensive plan to reverse a chronic condition,
healing the gut planfully is vitally important. Finally, equipped
with knowledge and empowerment, the symptoms from your
autoimmune condition can be minimized to the point where you
can live out your life virtually symptom-free with an overall sense
of health and well-being.

Healthy in spirit:
Spirituality and
mental
health
................................................................................
By Rev. April Kain-Breese

oes spirituality have a positive

influence on mental health? There
are thousands of articles on this
topic, reflecting a full array of opinions,
and in some cases, scientific research on
such things as prayer for those undergoing surgery. It is possible to find support
for any position one wants to take. In my
experience, some spiritual practices are lifeenhancing, while others are truly damaging.
I frequently encounter people who have
felt abused by their religious institution of
origin and find it difficult to warm up to a
new way of experiencing spirituality.
Religious systems that proclaim we are
miserable sinners, that we should feel guilty
and afraid of God, are not helping us to
greater mental health. However, there are
some simple spiritual practices that can help.
Meditation, which encourages a calm,

peaceful mind, can be a great help for

dealing with anxiety, depression, or the
lesser forms of daily stress such as traffic
jams, deadlines, or bad weather. Meditation is easy to do and does not require
any outlay of funds. It only requires the
commitment of time and willingness to
begin. Start with five minutes of sitting
quietly with all of your electronics turned
off! You dont have to adopt any special
pose; just be comfortable and sit.
Journaling invites more introspection,
the opportunity to put down on paper (or
in pixels) just what you are actually feeling.
This is helpful because often we do not
really know what we are feeling.
Walking, skiing or snowshoeing while
reconnecting with nature is a wonderful
activity that fosters physical and mental
health.

Gathering in a community of caring with

others who share your spiritual values can
be deeply rewarding. Look for a community
where everyone seems to be respected and
appreciated for who they are. Ask friends
where they go to find such community.
If you are ready to invite a sense of
higher order into your life, maybe it is time
to reconsider your awareness of a higher
power God, Spirit, Source. What would
you like your higher power to be? What is
life? What is it that carries you forward?
When do you have a sense of something
greater than yourself? It may be when
sharing time with family or friends, when
walking in nature, or when sitting quietly
by a campfire. What is it that you feel?
Perhaps that can be the beginning of your
awareness of a higher power!
Mental health is a pressing concern for

Behind
the mask
Finding and nurturing
the authentic you
.....................................................
By Lisa Klarner

ow many times has someone asked you, Hows your day

going?, and you replied with a smile and said good
while inside you were battling a rollercoaster of emotions
related to depression or anxiety?
Many of us keep our struggles under a mask. We need help,
but we dont ask for it. We want to be real, authentic and even
vulnerable, but we feel we cant because its too risky. We feel we
appear flawed or weak. But, what we dont realize, is that most

people wear masks. Everyone has challenges.

Our lives often run on autopilot. We race almost blindly
through overscheduled days, most of us too busy to look within
and hear our hearts crying out pleading for reprieve, for peace,
for self-compassion.
Why is it so scary to stop and listen to the silence? What will we
hear? Will we realize we need to make changes in our life? Will we
see that it is OK to be honest and say we cant do it all?

We feel we appear flawed or

weak. But, what we dont realize,
is that most people wear masks.
Everyone has challenges.
To become connected with our authentic self to be real and
vulnerable we must first listen with silence to our heart.
Whats under your mask? If you have a mental health challenge,
are you getting the help you need? If you feel like you are being
taken advantage of, are you speaking up? If you are overwhelmed,
are you asking for help?
We must first begin by removing our mask, even if its only
during meditation when we are alone. Start by sitting quietly in
a private place where you will not be disturbed. Focus on your
breathing. Deep breaths, in and out. Listen to relaxing music if
you wish, or sit in complete silence. Pay attention to your heart
beating. Feel your feet on the ground. Allow your thoughts to pass
through your mind with gentle observation. Do not be afraid to
look within. Its OK! Have your journal ready to write and reflect
after you are finished with your meditation.
When you are ready for the next step, confide in a friend, counselor or life coach. Once you begin to take steps in a direction that
moves you closer to your authenticity, you will begin to feel more
peace in your life. When you remove your mask, you will realize
that there was nothing to fear. You can be real, authentic and yes,
even vulnerable. The path you are destined to follow will become
clearer day by day.
The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.

Homeopathy
for depression
and seasonal
affective
disorder
.....................................................................
By Rebecca Beringer

I used to grab the bad feeling and stay there. I am much healthier
than I was six months ago. I have a peace deep down and it is going
deeper. It is like an elevated place or a platform where I feel safe and
predictable. It is a stable place, one step up the ladder at a time.
The experience of a client under homeopathic care

omeopathy is a system of natural medicine over 200

years old that uses substances from nature made into
homeopathic remedies in Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-regulated pharmacies to address issues of concern.
Depression, anxious feelings, low mood and energy, sleep difficulties and the winter blues are all within the scope and practice
of homeopathy, and its application is shown to have incredibly
positive results without harsh side effects.
There is no better time of year to be talking about depression and
how it can be healed on a deep and natural level with homeopathy.

50

Natures Pathways | March 2015

We are plunged into the depths of winter, longing for the warmth of
summer days and the feeling of sun on our skin and faces.
Some are more negatively affected by this time of year than
others. It is estimated that 6 percent of the U.S. population in the
Northern climate are affected by seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
and another 14 percent have a lower form of SAD referred to as
the winter blues. These conditions, similar to general depression, are characterized by a lack of energy, difficulty waking,
weight gain and food cravings of starch and sugar. Accompanying
feelings include melancholy, malaise and sadness. Concentration
becomes difficult and many withdraw from friends and family.
Treatment usually includes supplementation with vitamin D, light
therapy, counselor care and medication.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that
between the late 1990s and 2008, prescription antidepressant use rose
400 percent amongst all ages and that by 2008, 1 in 10 Americans
was using an antidepressant. These are staggering figures. For those
interested in a natural approach, Homeopathy holds an answer for
children, teens, adults and seniors who are suffering from any form
of depression, from the winter blues to major depression.
Homeopathic philosophy attests that symptoms being experienced
by a person are an imbalance in the energetic system, and the application of a homeopathic remedy helps stimulate the body to heal itself
and release from these stuck patterns. Thus, many find relief in using
homeopathy to manage and lift the depression experience.
Some reasons that homeopathy is a wonderful choice for
natural support of depression:
It is gentle and noninvasive.
Homeopathic remedies can be used in conjunction with existing medications. A person does not have to change any of his
current care to begin homeopathy.
www.naturespathways.com

Homeopathy is incredibly inexpensive in comparison to the

cost of prescription drugs. Costs involve a modest fee for

consultation and remedies.
Homeopathic remedies do not have side effects.
Homeopathic remedies assist with all areas including sleep,
overall energy, mood and any accompanying health concerns.
Yet can homeopathy really work as well as an antidepressant? Yes! One
study of 91 patients conducted by the Department of Psychobiology
at the University of Brazil in Sao Paulo showed that individualized
homeopathic application performed as well as Fluoxetine (Prozac) in
the treatment of moderate to severe depression. The outcomes were
similar, showing that homeopathy is not inferior to this popular antidepressant. The one difference that was noted was more interruptions
in care due to adverse side effects for the antidepressant group.
If you or a loved one are suffering from depression, this time
of year or any other, consider homeopathy as a gentle, holistic
approach to heal. For chronic or serious concerns, such as depression, homeopathy is most successful when a professional, qualified homeopath is consulted.
Rebecca Beringer is a classical homeopath with over five years of
experience working with men, women and children of all ages.
Her practice serves clients all over northeast Wisconsin and the
broader U.S. Her practice is based in Appleton, inside Alternatives
Holistic Health and Wellness Center. She is a graduate of the highly
respected Northwestern Academy of Homeopathy in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Rediscovering the
natural beauty of
wood with sustainable,
nontoxic, zeroVOC natural oils
and solvents

By Jonas A. Zahn
Dark raw tung oil mixed with orange oil brushes on
easily and is very forgiving of runs and drips.

This is one of a four-part series on natural, nontoxic, eco-friendly

wood finishes.

n the process of building a sustainable and eco-friendly casket

company, weve had to learn a lot about eco-friendly wood
finishes. The plain pine box appeals to only so many. Weve
learned how to achieve a wide variety of beautiful wood finishes
without using harmful chemicals. Most of our learning has been a
matter of rediscovering the historic techniques mastered by 16th
century English craftsmen. In this article well briefly cover the
history, chemistry and useful techniques for achieving natural oil
finishes with natural solvents.

Natural oil finishes date back many centuries. Some natural

oils used on wood include linseed oil, tung oil and walnut oil.
Olive oil, almond oil and coconut oil are also effective for small
wood restoration projects, although these food-grade oils may be
a little expensive for large projects. Chinese craftsmen have been
using tung oil, produced by pressing the leaves of the tung tree,
for more than 1,000 years to seal wood and masonry surfaces.
Sixteenth century English craftsmen used linseed oil obtained
from the dried, ripened seeds from the flax plant, a cereal grain.
Natural oil finishes work by penetrating the wood grain surface
and oxidizing with exposure to air forming a hard, sealed,
protective wood surface. This is different from a conventional

polyurethane or varnish that builds up a protective surface on

top of the wood.
Natural oil finishes are best applied when thinned with a
solvent. If you dont thin some of these natural oils, it will take
days (or weeks) for the oil to dry and the oil will not penetrate
the surface as deeply. The solvent helps the oil penetrate the wood
grain for a long-lasting protective finish. The solvent will evaporate almost completely as the oil cures. Natural oil finishes can be
thinned with conventional solvents or eco-friendly solvents like
orange oil or good ol lemon juice.
The paint aisle in your local home improvement store will have
at least six different varieties of conventional solvents. All of these
contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Turpentine is a
common solvent obtained by distilling the resin of pine trees. Paint
thinners, also known as mineral spirits, are distillates of petroleum.
Notice the warnings on these solvents; they are toxic, require ventilation and are flammable. There is an alternative that smells nice,
wont give you a headache and is stable (no VOCs). Citrus solvent,
also known as orange oil, is made by distilling the peels of citrus
fruit, mainly oranges. Orange oil is used in commercial food flavoring. It is a pleasure to work with and it smells like oranges!
Mixing orange oil one-to-one with tung oil yields an effective
natural wood finish with zero harmful toxins or VOCs. Applying
the oil mixture with a foam brush or chip brush is easy for even
a novice woodworker. Unlike conventional varnish, the finish is
forgiving of drips and runs. Apply heavily on fresh (sanded) wood
surfaces for deep penetration in the wood grain. Touch up areas
where the wood has absorbed the oil and smooth out where the
oil is pooling within 30 minutes. Apply multiple coats for more
protection with light sanding between coats with 300 grit (or
finer) or #00 steel wool. We like to wait 24-48 hours between coats.
Tung oil brings out the natural character and colors of wood
on oak, cherry and pine projects. Tung oil will add a light yellow
hue, or honey glaze to the wood, bringing out those warm tones
of red that naturally occur in the wood grain. Linseed oil works
almost the same, but will yellow a little more over time than tung
oil. Walnut oil darkens over time especially on red oak, resulting in a very rich dark reddish-brown color. Walnut oil is naturally thinner and can be applied without a solvent. Walnut oil is
also a good food-grade surface treatment for cutting boards or
kitchen countertops.

had, medications, your general health
and your activity level. The goal here is
to discover any triggers that make your
problem better or worse. Problems in
your pelvis influence your most important
functions. You will discuss how often you
go to the bathroom, if you have pain when
you urinate or have a bowel movement,
and any effects on your sexual health.
Using these discussions, you and your
PPT will determine your goals for physical therapy. The goals of pelvic physical
therapy are things such as pain-free bowel
movements, or being able to complete
any of the following: have intercourse
without pain, go to Zumba without the
fear of leaking urine, sit through your
childs recital without having to get up to
go to the bathroom, or tolerating your ride
home from work without increased pelvic
pain. The goals of pelvic physical therapy
are specific to you and based on your life
activities.
In addition to being empathetic listeners,
PPTs are the medical experts of the musculoskeletal system, movement and function.
The pelvis is a complicated system of bones,
ligaments, muscles, nerves, organs and
connective tissues. PPTs have advanced
training in the anatomy and physiology of
the pelvis, urinary and bowel functions,
pregnancy, and sexual health. During
your examination, your PPT will assess
your posture, flexibility, strength, breathing mechanics and biomechanics for your
entire body. Additionally, they will evaluate your movements and examine your
muscles and bones (typically through your
trunk, hips and legs). Based upon your
discussion and examination, your PPT
will determine the cause of your problem
and identify any impairment that might be
contributing to it.
www.naturespathways.com

After your evaluation, your PPT will

describe types of treatments that would be
the most beneficial, and explain the pros
and cons of each. Together with you will
collaborate to determine a plan that fits
you. Treatment will typically begin at your
first visit. Treatment may include handson techniques to your bones or muscle, or
exercises that you will continue at home.
Most often, it is a combination of both.
At your second visit (occasionally at
your initial visit), your PPT will determine
if an internal pelvic examination is necessary. Due to the location of the pelvic floor
muscle, the best way to evaluate and treat
them is internally. This is done through the
vagina in females and the rectum in males.
PPT examinations differ from medical
exams. During the exam, a speculum is
not used for women. PPTs are evaluating
the pelvic floor muscles, joints, ligaments,
fascia, connective tissue and nerves not

the reproductive, urinary, or intestinal

organs or systems. The PPTs assessment
determines what areas are painful; if there
are muscle spasms or tightness present; the
strength, endurance and coordination of
your pelvic floor; and the flexibility of any
scar tissue that may be present.
Pelvic pain or incontinence is not something you have to live with. Hopefully a
better understanding of pelvic floor physical therapy will encourage you to make a
change.

Ingredients

1 medium onion, diced

2 teaspoons olive oil
2 cups fresh spinach

a couple times then place directly onto oven rack. Cook for
40-45 minutes until soft. Remove and let cool.
In a large skillet, saut onion and garlic in olive oil, stirring
for about 1 minute. Add spinach and cook for about 5-7
minutes until onion is translucent and spinach is soft.
Once sweet potatoes are cool, cut lengthwise then scoop out
the middle of the sweet potato. I used a knife to cut about
inch away from the skin all the way around, then I cut
the middle into 3 pieces. This makes it easier to remove the
middle without breaking the skin.
Mash sweet potato into skillet. If it is a little undercooked,
cover and cook for 10 more minutes.
Stir in salt and pepper. Place sweet potatoes on a parchmentlined baking sheet.
Scoop mash into potato shells then create a large divot for
the egg. You will want to make sure the divot is big enough
to fit the egg.
Break 1 egg into each divot. Cook for 15 minutes or until
yoke is set.
Enjoy!

8 ways to lose
weight quickly
and
safely
......................................................................
By Brandon Hintz and Diana Jaworski

1. MAKE WATER YOUR PRIMARY DRINK. Most drinks

provide you with little to no benefit, with the exception to milk,

orange juice and protein shakes. Did you know a regular soda
can have up to 180 calories per 12-ounce drink? If you drink two
sodas a day, thats an extra 360 calories. If you multiple those 360
calories by seven days, you get 2,400 calories in a week. Thats
almost a pound of fat!

2. DRINK WITH SMALL CUPS, EAT WITH SMALL PLATES.

If you want to see results with your dieting, you need to consume
less not just in calories but also in portions. Using small plates,
cups and utensils will allow slower consumption and an easier
way to lose weight.

negative habit is causing them some sort of

problem or discomfort in life. It ranges from
the discomfort of having to smoke outside
in the cold weather, to not exercising, to not
being able to fall asleep or feeling anxious
too much of the time (and yes, those last
two often are related to habits).
Most of the time people believe hypnosis can help them, but they are not sure
how it works or if it will work for them.
For the vast majority of the human race,
theres good news: hypnosis can work for
you when you work with an experienced,
thorough and insightful hypnotist.
A thorough hypnotist will first do an
interview with you and assess how hypnosis will work for you before proceeding to
do a hypnosis session. It seems obvious to
start with an interview and assessment, but
youd be surprised at how many people dont
realize this. The interview insures three criteria are met: first, that there is a clear understanding of what you would like to change;
second, that hypnosis will actually help; and
third, that the hypnotist and you are on the
same page regarding the goals for your
work together. If any of these criteria are not
met, its not the right time to do hypnosis.
The assessment also allows for an
insightful hypnotist to tailor the hypnosis session to perfectly fit their client.

This generally leads to better results. This

means that during the hypnosis session,
the client receives suggestions that are
aligned with his/her goals and are easier
for him or her to utilize; for example, if my
clients goal is to relax and sleep well, I will
sometimes guide my client into a pleasant
state of relaxation by suggesting they think
of the beach on a warm day but for some
people that could be agitating. What they
might prefer is walking through a field or
wooded area, or simply lying in their bed
or sitting in a reclining chair. I use the
insights from the interview and assessment to maximize my clients success.
Hypnosis can occur quickly or slowly,
and it can be deep or light; an experienced
hypnotist knows that people have gotten
results with both. The important thing is
that the suggestions given are aligned with
your specific likes and dislikes, and especially aligned with your specific goals.
Trish is a graduate of Marquette
University and a certified consulting
hypnotist providing hypnosis classes
and private sessions since 1997. With
additional training in hypnosis for
medical issues, sports and habits for good health, she

results for her clients. Visit www.patriciampoole.com

Wisdom from
the school of
hard
knocks
...................................................................
By Phyllis Kasper, Ph.D.

ou may not have realized this yet, but most of us need

a big shove to take up the challenge of personal change.
We only take on that challenge when we are suffering and
want relief.
Why is it that illness, fear, depression, loss and failure get us
moving, yet love and hope dont have that same motivating
power? It has a lot to do with how the survival gear of our brains
operates as compared to the reward centers. We instinctively fight,
flight or freeze when our brain senses even a hint of danger. Our
survival depends on quick reactions. There is always another
chance to flirt or buy a car or enjoy a great meal, but you might
have only one chance to jump out of the way of that falling tree
limb or oncoming car.
We also have assumptions about the difficulty of making meaningful changes in our physical health, our emotional health and
our relationships. Yet it might turn out to be possible, even easy,
once you break through your patterns of repeating the same
mistakes.
One common assumption is that we are either helpless victims or
brilliant victors depending on our genetics. As we are learning more
about the human genome, we are also learning about epigenetics.
This is an approach to modifying gene expression. So a child might
be born with a genetic inability to break down the amino acid
phenylalanine. It will build up in the body and cause seizures and
impaired intellectual development. Once the brain damage occurs,
it cant be reversed. Yet most hospitals use a simple urine test to
discover its presence in newborns and get them on a protective lowprotein diet. The sweetener aspartame acts like a poison.
I often have clients who feel trapped in depression or anxiety
because it seems to run in the family and they believe their only
hope lies in medication. Yet this is seldom the truth. In cases
where the emotional problem has a strong genetic basis, getting
a genetic analysis will tell you which medications will help and
which will harm. If the depression is seasonal, it might be a matter
of getting a therapeutic lamp for seasonal affective disorder. For
most people, depression and anxiety are highly treatable through
www.naturespathways.com

learning new skills and attitudes. After all, even when our survival
gear is creating serious problems, such as post-traumatic stress
disorder, the most fundamental survival skill is adaptability. How
else can we explain finding humans surviving and thriving in the
frozen tundra, deserts, jungles and on the slopes of volcanos?
To me, the most disabling assumption is that if we only try the
same tactic that has been failing, but do it harder, we will get a
better result. With relationships, the expectation is that the therapist will come up with a magical thing to do or say that will change
the other person.
Think hard about your assumptions and expectations. Allow
some love and hope for yourself to come into the picture. Perhaps
it takes those hard knocks to get started on a path of healing. But
it takes acceptance, love for yourself and a willingness to learn and
change to follow that path all the way to healing.

Reduce
medication
waste in
your
home
........................................................
By Jennifer Semrau

rescription and over-the-counter. Pills, liquids, creams and

ointments. Nearly every home has some type of medication
used for family members or pets. If you have unwanted or
expired medication, it is important to properly manage it. Safeguard the medication in your home until you can take it to a pharmaceutical take-back event or a drug drop box, commonly located
in police departments (often with 24-hour/7-days-a-week access).
But there are actions you can take to prevent the creation of
medication waste from even occurring. The UW-Extension Solid
and Hazardous Waste Education Center offers these tips for
reducing drug waste in the home.

Take care of yourself

While it may seem like common sense, simple, sustained actions

such as eating healthier, exercising more or reducing stress can
have a marked impact on the number of medications a person
needs, and therefore, the number of medications that could
potentially be wasted. Making dramatic life changes can be overwhelming, so tackling healthy lifestyle changes in small doses can
be more manageable. Setting a goal of walking each day (or even
every other day) at lunch, adding one more veggie or fruit to each
meal, increasing water intake by a cup per day, going to bed 30
minutes earlier or making a point to reduce stress by reading,
mediating or engaging in another relaxing activity daily could all
contribute to a healthier you. The resulting weight loss or stress
reduction could help reverse conditions such as high blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol or digestive issues and reduce medications necessary to treat those conditions.
62

Natures Pathways | March 2015

Assume responsibility and

review your medications

When a medical professional suggests a drug treatment for an

ailment, as the patient, inquire if there are alternative or non-drug
options that could be explored first. If drug treatment is necessary, request samples of the medication before being issued a full
prescription, which can help you identify intolerable side effects
or other negative reactions. Similarly, if a prescription is necessary, seek the lowest quantity possible to assess the effectiveness
of the treatment, versus a 30-, 60- or 90-day supply.
Also be sure to review with your doctor all of the medications
you are taking when discussing a new drug treatment program.
This includes over-the-counter medications, vitamins and herbal
supplements. Even something as seemingly benign as a vitamin
can interact with a new prescription, causing negative reactions
and potentially drug waste.

Purchase and store medications wisely

Keep track of all of your over-the-counter and prescription medications and keep a current list with you when shopping. This will
help you avoid buying products you already have and/or buying
too much of a product that cannot be used prior to its expiration
date. It is also advisable to fill all prescriptions at a single pharmacy. The pharmacist can then check for any potential drug interactions between prescriptions and also review your list of overthe-counter medications for potential issues.
Store medications properly to ensure they maintain their integrity and prevent diversion. The bathroom is often not the best
www.naturespathways.com

place to store medications: the humidity of a bathroom may affect

the medication and when individuals are looking for medications
to take from a home, the bathroom is a prime place to look, as
they have private access. It is recommended to store medications
in a room guests would not normally have access to and place
high diversion drugs, such as pain killers, in a lockbox.
The tips above can help prevent the creation of medication
waste from even occurring. If you do have unwanted or expired
medications, seek out a medication disposal program. Do not
flush medications down the toilet. If bringing drugs to a medication disposal program is not possible, it is preferable to mix medications with a nondesirable substance, like coffee grounds or kitty
litter, and dispose of them with the trash.

appealing. At first you may not be sure
what it is, but your curiosity is peaked.
You notice the inviting waiting area that
includes cozy chairs, relaxing lighting and
your choice of coffee, tea, hot chocolate or
water. You are greeted with a warm smile
from Kaitlyn, who specializes in making
whoever comes into our doors know that
they matter to us and that we value them.
You realize what it is you noticed: real
people committed to serving real people.
Beyond your first impression, you will
come to know that our counselors work
in partnership with their clients in order
to explore what lies beneath the surface of
outward symptoms. Through the therapy
process, clients can identify their strengths
while gathering new tools and insights that
will help them move forward toward a more
confident, balanced and meaningful life.
What you think affects how you feel,
which influences what actions you take. If
you are experiencing depression, anxiety,

treatment brings restoration and the longterm change clients seek and deserve.
Our counselors specialize in Christian
counseling, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), Brainspotting, cognitive behavioral therapy, reactive attachment disorder (RAD), holistic
breathwork and other mental health interventions that help people overcome or build
healthier approaches for addressing their
concerns or finding relief from the grips of
trauma. Most importantly, we believe that
the client-counselor relationship must be
grounded in respect, acceptance and trust.
We recognize that good health and
mental well-being are a result of healing
all aspects of a persons life. People, like
life and nature, are not one dimensional.
In nature there is winter, spring, summer
and fall; in life there are ups, downs, plans
and surprises. Human beings are a unique
blend of mind, body and spirit.
At CCM Counseling & Wellness, we
recognize how vital it is to acknowledge and
support the pieces, as well as the wholeness of our clients. We understand that a
clients mind, spirit and body are interconnected. If there is pain, anxiety or confusion in one part, it affects the wellness of
the other parts. This is why we have added a

Wellness Healing Center to our agency.

It is our intention to offer clients opportunities to enhance their therapy sessions and
emotional healing by using other natural
and safe methods of physical and spiritual
healing. Currently, we have practitioners
trained in massage, Reiki and reflexology.
The services offered through our Wellness
Healing Center are open to all. You do not
have to be a therapy client to enjoy the soft
music, fireplace and aroma scents while
receiving a massage, Reiki or reflex session.
This month, CCM Counseling & Wellness
is celebrating 35 years of being a beacon of
hope and a leader in integrated healing. Our
goal is to empower people with a deeper
understanding of the interconnectedness
of their body, mind and spirit, while equipping them with the tools they can use to
effectively move forward and feel prepared
to navigate and celebrate themselves, their
relationships and their life.

Your questions
about massage
during
pregnancy
answered
........................................................................
By Amanda Newhouse

Is massage beneficial for me during

pregnancy?

The answer is yes! Carrying a child for nine months is one of the
most physically difficult things you can put your body through.
During this time, your body goes through physical and emotional
changes every day and one of the best things you can do for
yourself and your unborn baby is relax which can be achieved
through regular massage.

When should I come in?

To truly get the full benefits of massage during your pregnancy,

you should start scheduling regular massage appointments early
on. This is a great way to help you relax, prep for labor, and it can
even help make delivery a little easier down the road.

What trimester is it safe to begin receiving

pregnancy massage?

In most cases, massage is considered safe as early as your first

trimester of pregnancy. However, many therapists who have not
received in-depth training will not massage a woman who is still
in the first trimester. This is common for those who are not certified in safe prenatal massage. A certification with Nurturing the
Mother Prenatal Massage allows a therapist to distinguish whether
or not massage in your first trimester is a safe option.
In most cases the answer is yes, it is not only safe but beneficial
for both you and baby.
www.naturespathways.com

What are the benefits I receive from

prenatal massage?

There are many benefits to receiving regular prenatal massage.

Prenatal massage helps with morning sickness, fatigue, body
aches/pains from weight gain and posture change, and helps
reduce stress hormones! A prenatal massage can also relieve many
discomforts of pregnancy caused by postural changes that happen
as the pregnancy progresses, such as low back pain, pubic pain,
round ligament pain, and neck and shoulder pain. By addressing these specific areas of discomfort, massage facilitates overall
relaxation. Many women report that they are able to sleep better at
night for at least a day or two after receiving a pregnancy massage.
Pregnancy massage is a gentle and nurturing technique, focusing
on your needs every step of the way. This type of massage is meant
to ease the pains and discomforts throughout pregnancy. Research
has shown that prenatal massage strengthens the immune system,
decreases blood pressure, decreases stress hormones, shortens labor
time and helps restore your body once in the postpartum phase.
Amanda Newhouse is a licensed massage therapist as well as a
certified Nurturing the Mother Pregnancy massage therapist at
PT Center for Women. Because of this, she is able to offer safe and
therapeutic pregnancy massage, labor support massage, postpartum
massage and newborn massage instruction. Amanda is the only
certified Nurturing the Mother Pregnancy massage therapist in the Fox Valley!

What is
integrative
medicine?
......................................................

n increasing percentage of the

population is consulting complementary medicine practitioners.
Why is this trend happening? Patients are
often unsatisfied with what they perceive as
a focus on using pharmaceuticals to treat
or suppress a specific disease rather than
helping them become and remain healthy.
Physicians have become so specialized
that their traditional role of comprehensive caregiver who focuses on healing and
wellness has been neglected. In response to
this growing patient dissatisfaction, many
university medical centers are developing
a new subspecialty of medicine.
Integrative medicine, which is also called
integrated health, combines alternative
medicine with evidence-based medicine.
The National Center for Complementary
and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), one
of the divisions of the National Institutes
of Health, states that there is emerging
evidence that some of the perceived benefits of this approach are real or meaningful. The practice treats the whole person,
focuses on wellness and health rather than
on treating disease, and emphasizes the
patient-physician relationship. All factors
that influence health, wellness and disease
are taken into consideration, including
mind, spirit and community, as well as
the body. The patient and practitioner are
partners in the healing process.
Dr. Steve Bittorf is the founder of Green
Bay Integrative Health (GBIH), a new
clinic in the Green Bay area that offers
wellness and integrative medicine services
for individuals. In 1994, Dr. Steve obtained
a Ph.D. in biochemistry and an M.D. at the
University of Wisconsin Medical School.
66

Natures Pathways | March 2015

He subsequently trained at the Mayo

Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he
completed internal medicine residency
and fellowships in pulmonary and critical
care medicine. Dr. Bittorf began practicing
integrative medicine in 2008, and 2014 he
established his practice in Green Bay.
The mission at GBIH is to practice
integrative medicine and adhere to the
highest standard of care. We form collaborative relationships with our patients and
combine both traditional and alternative
treatment approaches in order to promote
wellness. We believe that good medicine
is based in good science, inquiry-driven
and open to new paradigms. Conventional
and alternative effective interventions that
are natural and less invasive should be
used whenever possible, and the broader
concepts of health promotion and the
prevention of illness are paramount.
We offer a wide variety of services at
GBIH:
Bioidentical hormone replacement
therapy
Digestive health and balance
Integrative health care consultation
Medical-grade nutritional supplements

Stress analysis and mindfulness
training
Thyroid health and balance
Weight optimization
Aesthetics: Botox and Juvderm

help you? Patients interested in integrative

The skinny
on diabetic
and weight
loss diets
Can they be
successful if they
contain only
whole foods?
.............................................
By Grandma Rose (Rosalie Misco)

WHAT ARE WHOLE FOODS? Are whole foods those that have

not been processed at all?

To understand, we need to define the word processed. Processed
foods, as opposed to whole foods, means nothing has been added to
the food that wasnt in the food in its natural state, with the exception of salt. For example: Butter is churned and salt added. Churning is a process, but butter would still be a whole food.
Processed foods, the bad kind, often have many ingredients
added besides salt. It is common to add sugar, high fructose corn
syrup, cellulose, artificial colors and flavors, and more ingredients
that we dont recognize.
Processed foods have a nutrient data label. But these labels are
often deceptive, as the listed serving size is usually too small. This
makes the foods carbohydrate and fat count look really good, but
it is not realistic. When you buy a prepackaged processed food
item to take to work, the label often is for half the container. It
is natural to eat the entire container so as not to waste food and
money. As a result, you have twice the calories.
Many processed foods have cellulose added. It is not harmful to
eat cellulose, the body cannot use it at all. It is the most abundant
fiber on the planet and very cheap. Food processors use cellulose to extend processed foods and make them more profitable.
Cellulose has no nutrients and it replaces some of the naturally
occurring nutrients in whole food. A diet that is made up of many
processed foods can be short of nutrients.
A diabetic or weight loss diet that is made up of low-carbohydrate whole foods will be successful more often. You will know the
calories in whole foods. You will not be deceived by serving sizes.
www.naturespathways.com

You will have no doubt as to the foods nutrient content.

The epidemic of diabetes and obesity is caused by the increase
in processed foods and the added sugar and starch. The choice
between whole foods and processed foods is not a difficult decision to make. Do you want to get blood sugar under control or
lose weight? Choose whole foods!

How much do we know?

There have been some studies of rhodiola in people; however, the

quality of research is limited so firm conclusions about its effectiveness cant be made.

What have we learned?

Two review articles published in 2011 and 2012 looked at

15 studies that tested rhodiola on physical and mental performance in 575 people. Both reviews found evidence that rhodiola may enhance physical performance and ease mental fatigue,
but emphasized that the limited quantity and quality of available
evidence did not allow firm conclusions to be made.

What do we know about safety?

When taken orally (by mouth), rhodiola may cause dizziness, dry
mouth, and headaches. Also, people can have allergic reactions to
rhodiola.
