het was. Een enorme houten kist die 96 kg woog
en ongeveer mijn halve garage besloeg. Nadat
ik de papieren had gecontroleerd werd duidelijk
dat het inderdaad om een pakket ging voor het
TELE-satelliet testcentrum. Pas toen herinnerde ik
me, dat Alex me een tijdje geleden opmerkzaam

Onder DiSEqC 1.2 vereist automatisch
positioneren geen aanvullend apparaat.
Echter, het bedienen van de motor onder
1.2 onthult een zwakheid van het DiSEqC
protocol wanneer het interne geheugen van
de motor gebruikt wordt. Het geheugen dat
door MOTECK gebruikt wordt – en andere
fabrikanten doen het niet anders – heeft een
capaciteit voor maximaal 60 satellietposities
maar is onbetrouwbaar omdat alle waardes
worden gewist wanneer de motor gereset
wordt. Dat houdt in dat alle opgeslagen
satellietposities verloren raken.
Maar dit is niet het enige probleem met het
geheugen. Zijn eerste 26 posities bestaan uit
vooringestelde parameters die – helaas – in
de praktijk niet gebruikt kunnen worden. Afzonderlijke onderdelen voor montage

vertrouwen op de ontvanger in plaats van op
de motor. Dit is de enige manier om betrouw-
baar de motor te bedienen met het directe
DiSEqC 1.2 besturingscommando, Goto-X.
Sommige DiSEqC 1.2 ontvangers zijn zelfs
voorzien van een apart Goto-X menu. Maar Draaihoek schaal van de motor Breedtegraadaanpassing op de motor
ontvangers met geïntegreerde DiSEqC 1.3
of USALS werken het beste. Zij berekenen
automatisch de azimut draaihoek, slaan hem
op en verzenden hem samen met het Goto-X
commando. Uiteraard is de SG-2500 perfect
in staat om het Goto-X commando te begrij-
pen en hij past daarom briljant bij dit type
ontvangers.
Monteren van de motor

worden met behulp van een 13 mm steek-
sleutel. Net zo eenvoudig kan hij afgesteld
worden op de plaatselijke breedtegraad. De

De gebruiksaanwijzing is in het Engels en
levert bruikbare aanwijzingen voor montage
en afstelling. Hij biedt ook een lijst met de
corresponderende schaalwaardes van de
antenne-elevatie voor de lokale breedte-
graad. Als alternatief kan deze berekening
simpel uitgevoerd worden met een willekeu-
rige trigonometrische rekenmachine:

om voor te stellen deze complexe herberekening van
geografische coördinaten te integreren in ontvangers
en verzon de term USALS, dat staat voor Universeel
Satelliet Automatisch Locatie Systeem.

Wanneer je aan een satellietfan vraagt wat
het belangrijkste is bij het kiezen van de juiste
LNBF voor zijn Ku-band ontvangstsysteem, dan
zul je hoogstwaarschijnlijk horen dat dit de
conversieversterking en het ruisgetal zijn. Het
eerste zou zo hoog mogelijk moeten zijn en het
tweede het tegenovergestelde: hoe lager hoe beter.
Waarschijnlijk weten al onze lezers dat een hoge
conversieversterking inhoudt dat het uitgangssignaal
van de LNBF hoog is en dankzij dit kunnen lange
coaxkabels en signaalsplitters/schakelaars gebruikt
worden zonder bang te hoeven zijn dat het signaal te
zwak zal worden voor ontvangst.

dat de nieuwe
antennes eigenlijk
tamelijk robuust zijn.
“Installateurs zijn

schotel,” merkt hij trots
op over zijn nieuwste
product, “Ze hoeven
namelijk niet langer
tijd te besteden aan het

tamelijk robuust.” ■ Een andere vernieuwing van INFOSAT: Niran toont ons
een prototyp e van een C/Ku band multi LNBF om aan
multischakelaars aangesloten te worden. De C-band LNB
is voorzien van een uitgang voor horizontale en verticale
polarisaties terwijl de Ku-band LNB alleen een uitgang voor
verticale polarisatie heeft. Hij is bedoeld voor de thuismar kt
in
Thailand voor ontvangst van de THAICOM op 87,5° oost in de
C-band en NSS 6 op 95° oost in de Ku-band. “De technici zijn
bezig om de Ku-band LNB te voorzien van beide polarisaties
maar de technische uitdagingen zijn tamelijk hoog,” legt Niran
uit over de reden dat deze combi LNB’s maar één polarisatie
in
de Ku-band kunnen ontvangen.
Het meest recente artikel in TELE-

satelliet over INFOSAT in het begin van
2008 omvatte naast andere zaken een
foto van een ongebruikt veld. Dat was
toen. Vandaag staat er een nieuwe
fabriekshal in dit veld: “Dat is de INFO-
SAT fabriek nummer 2” legt Niran trots
uit. Hij gebaart naar de constructiewer-
kers die bezig zijn de laatste dingetjes af
te ronden. “Tegen de tijd dat deze uit-
gave gedrukt wordt zal de fabriek volle-
dig operationeel zijn.” Fabriek nummer 1
zit aan zijn grenzen: net een paar weken
geleden is de fabricage gestart van de
eerder genoemde een-segment scho-
tels.
“Fabriek nummer 1 is 2400 m2 groot,
fabriek nummer 2 is 2500 m2,” legt
Niran uit. Terwijl de eerste fabriek het
eigendom is van INFOSAT, wordt de
tweede gehuurd. “Deze besparing op de
kosten heb ik gebruikt om te investeren
in nieuwe machines,” onthult Niran met
betrekking tot zijn plannen. Hij was in
staat om twee extra ponsmachines aan
te schaffen tot een totaal van vijf die
gebruikt worden om de benodigde gaten
te ponsen in de 0,5 mm dikke aluminium
rollen voor de gazen angennesegmen-
ten.

Deze forse financiële investering zorgt
dat je even stopt en je afvraagt: heeft
Thailand op de één of andere manier
kans gezien om te ontkomen aan de hui-
dige wereldwijde economische crisis?
“Nee, helemaal niet,” antwoordt Niran,
“het begon vorig jaar september met een
gestage afname van het aantal koopcon-
tracten.” In eerste instantie had Niran
ook geen antwoorden. Zijn werknemers
begonnen zenuwachtig te worden. Toen
kwam Niran met de oplossing. “De prijzen

prijzen bekendgemaakt waren begonnen
de bestellingen binnen te komen. “Nu
gebeurt het regelmatig dat we merken
dat we zeven dagen in de week bezig zijn
om al deze bestellingen af te handelen,”
vertelt Niran met een lach op zijn gezicht.
Hij is nogal tevreden over zijn prijsverla-
gingsactie. De beschikbare voorraad aan
onverkochte antennes die tot het eind
van 2008 de fabrieksvloer vulde is sinds-
dien volledig uitgeput. “Momenteel wordt
een antenne verkocht zodra hij geprodu-
ceerd is; dealers moeten wachten tot
hun bestellingen verzonden worden!” De
eerste fabriek was in staat om maximaal
10.000 antennes per maand te produce-
ren. Met het opstarten van de tweede
fabriek is de capaciteit toegenomen tot
15.000.
Niran erkent dat de economische
crisis ook zijn voordelen heeft. De prij-
zen voor ruwe materialen zijn niet het
enige dat gedaald is, ook de salarisvraag
is stilgevallen. “70% van onze mede-
werkers is loyaal; 30% echter twijfelde
geen moment om naar een ander bedrijf
te vertrekken ook al werd er maar een
salarisverhoging van 1% geboden.” Loy-
aliteit van medewerkers is een belangrijk
aspect voor een bedrijf met 60 fabrieks-
medewerkers en 30 mensen op admini-
stratieve posities.
Tijdens de lunch in het Chao Praya
River Restaurant, direct naast de nieuwe
fabriek en maar 20 km van de stad Bang-
kok, legde Niran zijn plannen voor de
toekomst uit: “De populairste ontvan-
ger die in Thailand verkocht wordt is de

de ontvangers zijn gekenmerkt ‘Made
in China’. Wanneer hij de afzonderlijke
onderdelen SKO (Semi Knocked Down)
zou importeren, dan zou de invoerbelas-
ting maar 10% zijn, en de ontvangers
zouden dan ‘Made in Thailand’ geken-
merkt kunnen worden. “Sommige landen
geven de voorkeur aan ‘Made in Thai-
land’,” mijmert Niran ten aanzien van het
aanlokkelijke idee om zelf ontvangers te
bouwen. Tegelijkertijd denkt hij na over
de extra uitgaven die rechtstreeks met
dit idee samenhangen. Niran worstelt
met de keuze of hij wel of niet aan boord
van de ontvangerfabricage trein zou
moeten springen of dat hij beter op het
comfortabeler pad kan blijven van het
importeren van afgewerkte ontvangers.
Officieel heeft Niran zijn keuze nog niet
gemaakt. Maar wacht…. wanneer je een
kijkje neemt in de nieuwe fabriek dan zie
je dat er een stukje gereserveerd is voor
een ontvangerassemblagelijn….
Op de één of andere manier zou Niran
zijn ambitieuze doel willen bereiken.
Zelfs al is 2009 officieel geclassificeerd

DXer REPORT HDTV satellietontvangst in Beijing
De nieuwe
TELE-satelliet schrijft regelmatig over
satelliet DXers. Tot nog toe besloeg
deze categorie al diegenen die zich
DXer: HDTV bezighouden met satellietontvangst
als hobby. Inmiddels bestaat er een
nieuwe categorie: de HDTV DXer! Zij
zijn alleen geïnteresseerd in HDTV
kanalen in DVB-S2, en niets anders
dan dat. We kwamen gek genoeg in
Beijing in contact met één van de
eersten van deze gespecialiseerde
HDTV DXers, of misschien was dat niet
eens zo gek. Privé satellietontvangst
is niet toegestaan in China behalve in
plattelandsgebieden en de concentratie
aan HDTV is daardoor twee keer zo
ongebruikelijk.
■ Net twee dagen geleden

1,8 meter schotel staat vast
op zijn plaats en wijst naar de
ASIASAT.

Deze HDTV DXer nam de nickname
“Applesat”. Hij legde uit waarom: “Toen
ik 15 werd begon ik geïnteresseerd te
raken in satellietontvangst. In die tijd
was China nog tamelijk geïsoleerd en de
ontvangst van buitenlandse program-
ma’s opende een nieuwe wereld voor
me. In die tijd dacht ik dat de aarde net
een appel was met satellieten die daar
omheen vliegen.”
Zijn ouders waren niet echt blij met
zijn nieuwe hobby maar Applesat maakte
zich daar niet al te druk om en begon
met een 1,5 meter schotel voor ASIASAT
1 ontvangst. Dat was in 1992. Drie jaar
later breidde hij zijn systeem uit met een
2,1 meter schotel voor APSTAR 1.

met drie LNB’s ontvangt zijn eigen appartement in het noor-

zijn conische feedhoorn. “Normale prime
focus antenne (PFA) feeds zouden teveel
signaalverlies geven,” legt Applesat uit.

kunt alleen legaal schotels installeren in
open land gebieden voor ontvangst van
CHINASTAR met kanalen in ABS-S,” legt
Applesat uit, “maar privé ontvangst in de
stad is niet toegestaan.”
Er bestaan echter uitzonderingen voor
die appartementsgebouwen waar buiten-
landers mogen wonen en dan nog alleen
voor die appartementen waar deze bui-
tenlanders daadwerkelijk wonen. De in
Beijing geboren Applesat kan dit niet als
excuus gebruiken, en om die reden wil
hij geen aandacht op zichzelf vestigen.
“Ik ben gek op HDTV,” zegt Applesat, “en
dat is waarom ik bereid ben wat risico’s

Hoe komt iemand zoals Applesat nou
eigenlijk aan satellietproducten in Bei-
jing? Alhoewel je winkels met satellietap-
paratuur zult vinden in provinciale steden
zul je in Beijing niks vinden. “Ik koop een
groot deel van mijn apparatuur via inter-
net veilingsites,” onthult Applesat, “Het
gebruik van het woord ‘satelliet’ is echt
niet toegestaan zodat je andere verge-
lijkbare termen moet gebruiken om der-
gelijke producten te vinden.”
Applesat weet hoe hij om alle obsta-

kels heen moet komen om zijn hobby
uit te breiden. Zijn rek bevat inmiddels
vijf satellietontvangers en hij heeft ook
een 32” HDTV flat-screen TV. “Ik zou
heel graag van mijn hobby mijn beroep
maken,” legt Applesat uit, “en uiteinde-
lijk zal dat ook gaan gebeuren.” De ener-
gie die Applesat in zijn hobby investeert
maakt dat tot een zekerheid.

“Mijn favoriete kanalen zijn Luxe.TV op ASIASAT
2, Fashion TV, Voom, National Geographic,
History Channel, AXN en ASN van MEASAT,”
vertelt Applesat, “De nieuwe HD kanalen van de
Koreaanse aanbieder Skylife zijn kort geleden
gestart via de KOREASAT 3 op 11.900L en
11.938L.”

Italia’s IPTV platform will feature new cinema and TV movies, TV serials,
cartoons and TV premieres, as well as more Italian football content.
Alice Home TV subscribers can now access Premium Bouquet package

channel with live coverage of the current Italian Big Brother series. In

IPTV SUBSCRIBERS QUADRUPLE IN 2008

Lattelecom reported a fourfold increase in subscribers to its IPTV
service Lattelecom TV during 2008 and also recently secured the rights
to operate an MPEG4-based DTT service in the country. Although
it has not revealed subscriber figures for its IPTV service, launched
in April 2007, the company also reports that income from interactive
TV services increased by 517% in 2008. Lattelecom recently started
expanding its new FTTx-based “Future Network”, which will deliver
Internet speeds of up to 100 Mbps, with customers in Zolitūde (a
suburb of Riga, the capital of Latvia) already receiving these speeds.
In the future, Internet speeds will be increased to 10 Gbps, and the
new network is to be expanded to the neighbourhood of Ķengarags
(another suburb of Riga), and then to other parts of the capital and
across other major cities in Latvia. The operator aims to offers DTT
services on a commercial basis and throughout Latvia from this autumn.

Dialog Telecom has launched its new IPTV service using a video
distribution network based on a video networking solutions from
Scopus Video Networks. At the core of Dialog’s new IPTV video
distribution network is the Scopus Eldorado NMS (Network Man-
agement System), which offers redundancy and a centralised view
of the network to simplify troubleshooting and help the operator’s
engineers maintain consistent, high-quality transmissions for 24
channels. Scopus IRD-2900 series integrated receiver decoders
receive satellite video feeds carrying Polish and international con-
tent, while the company’s UE-9000 encoders provide local content
encoding for distribution of the video to viewers’ homes over IP.

PORTUGAL TELECOM WITH 312.000 IPTV SUBSCRIBERS

Portugal Telecom added 110.000 new customers to its IPTV service
Meo in the fourth quarter of 2008 to reach 312.000 by year-end. The
success of its TV offer can be seen in the decelerating loss of its fixed-
line subscribers and in the growth of customers for its flat fee broadband
services, with around 50% of new IPTV subscribers in 2008 being
entirely new customers for Portugal Telecom. Furthermore, the operator
reports a 42.9% penetration rate for its IPTV service within its ADSL
customer base as a whole. Portugal Telecom also reports that VOD has
proved to be a key asset, with 45% of Meo customers paying to access
the VOD library in 2008, watching an average of 2.8 movies per month.

MTS Allstream has launched MTS HDTV, the next generation of
HDTV, PVR, improved guide features and other TV advancements
to residents in Winnipeg. MTS is the first company in Canada to
launch a digital TV service that includes combined technology from
Alcatel-Lucent and the Microsoft Mediaroom IPTV software plat-
form. Along with an extensive line-up of over 250 digital TV and
music channels and features like VOD, the new services include

it offers its IPTV service U-verse, having recently expanded its
line-up with HD channels from Disney-ABC-ESPN Television,

ESPNews HD and ESPNU HD. AT&T U-verse has two HD sub-
scription options - the U450 programming package costs US$ 10
per month, while the HD Premium Package offers even more HD
channels for an extra US$ 5 per month. Most packages include
the HD-ready Total Home DVR, which enables users to record HD
programmes on a single DVR and stream them to any connected TV.
VERIZON OFFERS 110 HD CHANNELS IN CALIFORNIA

Verizon has added 18 new channels to market areas in California
including several new HD channels, bringing the total to 110 HD
channels. In comparison, DirecTV provides 104 HD channels. The
channel counts do not take into consideration HD VOD, of which both
companies offer a substantial amount of HD titles in their libraries.

RO.VE.R. SDA-5 Digisky

Although it comes with a very long name, this new
measuring tool is one of the smallest profes-
sional analyzers we have seen so far. It has been
designed for measuring analogue and digital
signals. It is light-weighted, only 1.3kg, and is very
small. It comes in a yellow carrying case, which
also has room for adapters and other accesso-
ries. A shoulder strap makes it easy to carry. A
first look at this device will show you that is must

not using proper measuring equipment.
Use the SDA-5 to reach a perfect offset
for your LNB. For analogue channels, a
quick glimpse of the screen will do a lot.
But for digital signals this is impossible.
There is only one way to measure the quality of
digital signals: facts and numbers. Good measur-
ing with good measuring equipment is the answer.
A simple signal strength measuring tool won’t
help. It is the very strength that doesn’t say much
about the digital quality of it. For digital signals,
the quality is measured in BER (Bit Error Rate),
before and after Viterbi. You will need a tool like the
SDA-5 from Digisky for real professional instal-
lations and measuring. A perfect BER depends
on the size of the dish, LNB and cable lengths
and quality of the multiswitches in between. This
