absent managing workplace absenteeism is one of the most difficult human
resource in today.Absenteeism is a worldwide problem for employers. It does
not only effect the cost effective of the business, but it can also dispute its
operations. It is natural for employees to become ill during the scope of their
employment. Companies have to operate their businesses in the most efficient
way possible, so a balancing act occurs between the operational needs of the
employer and the rights of the employee. The research problem therefore
relates to the question of what excessive ill health absenteeism entries and
how it can be deal with fairly. Absence effects more than just the person who is

total man-shifts lost because of absences as a percentage of the total number
of man-shifts scheduleIf absenteeism is to be controlled, the physical and
emotional needs ofEmployees must be addressed. Incentives can be
introduced to discourage Absenteeism. Attendance bonus is awarded in

Milk is a complete food. The most primary source of nutrition from

babies to the elders, milk contains Saturated Fat, Protein, Calcium and
Vitamin C. For millennia, cow's milk has been processed into dairy
products such as cream, butter, yogurt, lassie, ice-cream, and
especially the more durable and easily transportable product, cheese.
Industrial science has brought us casein, whey protein, lactose,
condensed milk, powdered milk, and many other food-additives and
industrial products.
India is the largest producer and consumer of cattle's milk in the world.

Literature review
The rate of the absenteeism in Indian industries is very
high and cannot be dismiss. A Statistical study of absenteeism of Indian Labor
observed that, the basic cause of absenteeism in India is that industrial worker
is still part of the absenteEism-time peasant. The workers go to find out the
jobs.

The Labor Investigation committee pointed out that drinking and they are also
responsible for absenteeism. Since drinking and they come in the late hours of
night make it difficult for the workers to reach in time on their duties.

Industrial accident depends upon the nature of work to be performed by the

worker and his ability for doing that work. In case of the job, the accidents
occur more frequently which lead to higher rate of the absenteeism.

It has also been pointed of that there is a greater percentage of

absenteeism during the night shifts than in the dayshifts, owing to the greater
of work during the night-time.

The long hours of work also affect the workers health efficiency and
their sickness rate and absenteeism rate are increased of that situation.

The committee pointed out that sickness is most important responsible

for absenteeism in almost of the in Industrial sector. Epidemics like cholera,

It is a systematic and a replicable process with identified and defines

collect the data and analysis the result. It disseminates the findings to
contribute to generalize able knowledge. Research is a scientific and
systematic search for pertinent information on a specific topic. In fact, research
is an art of scientific investigation. The advance leaner dictionary of current
English laid dawn the meaning of research as a carefully investigation of

Completed report

A project is like a journey and it is always better to have at least the

faintest
Of ideas of the probable direction of our destination. Initially we have to decide
upon the general area of interest or the aspect of the subject to inquire into.
This decision is rather broad and not very precise. It is crude indication of
the purpose of the study and is of little help for further planning and
MIM KALAMB

Page 29

A STUDY ON EMPOLYEE ABSENTISUM

organization of the study Research Methodology is defined as a more
systematic activity directed
towards discovery and the development of an organized body of knowledge.
An efficient research contributes to the evaluation of a proper decision, which
ultimately affects the path the organization will choose. The data collected is of
paramount importance and hence the research process has to be effective
and an
efficient one. Research Methodology involves adopting various techniques
which are
best suited for the research and study of the problem, for investigation and
analysis of the problem. It starts with data collection from various sources i.e.,
primary and secondary sources, data analysis and interpretation and finally the
findings or conclusion from the analysis.
In this project, Primary data was collected by Questionnaire Survey.
The workmen selected for the interview purpose were from the hourly rated
workmen
segment, which affect the production directly, in case they remain absent A
random selection of samples from the workmen segment was done in the
company. workman was selected randomly as sample to avoid any bias.
Thus, 50 workmen were selected for survey through the questionnaires
prepared. This helped to be fair to all by not keeping in view the past record of
absenteeism of individuals.

The secondary data was collected from:

MIM KALAMB

Page 30

A STUDY ON EMPOLYEE ABSENTISUM

Monthly absenteeism data.

Yearlyabsenteeism report.
Leave records of employees.
After the collection of data, the response of the 50 individuals were arranged in
A chronological pattern and then evaluated. Many inferences could be drawn
from
Both the primary as well as secondary data available which are put forth in the
Analysissection. It is often beneficial to undertake an intensive study of a few
well selected instances of the phenomenon of interest. The method demands
for great
Sensitivityand receptivity on our part. As new information pours in, the study is
reformulated and redirected.Hence, to be on the safer side, it would always be
wise to work keeping a particular method in mind.

Defining the Populations:

The population or universe can be finite or infinite. The population is said to
be finite if it consist of a fixed number of elements so that it is possible to
enumerate it in its totality. So in this project consist of finite population 150
workers works in the industry.
Sampling Plan:

MIM KALAMB

Page 31

A STUDY ON EMPOLYEE ABSENTISUM

A sampling plan is a definite design for obtaining a sample from the sampling
frame. It refers to the technique or the procedure the researcher would adopt
in selecting some sampling units from which inferences about the population is
drawn sampling design is determined before any data are collected.
Convenient sampling technique was adopted. In this method the researcher
select those units of the population in the sample, which appear convenient to
him or the mgmt of the organization where he is conducting research.
Sample Size:
Sample size is given to the 50
Methods Of Collecting Data:
Primary data was done through questionnaire, personal interviews &
secondary data was collected through company handbooks, some from
Human Resource book & some of company books & used journals & company
website. For this purpose 50 employees were selected as a sample through
simple random sampling method.
A research study was done on labor absenteeism it has given
me a chance to know the short coming & given valuable suggestion which
could improve the absenteeism measures 50 samples are taken in SHIV

The field work is done at SHIV PRASAD FOODS & MILK PRODUCTS.

DATA COLLECTION.
Normally two types data are used for the purpose of carrying out
research:
A-Primary Data
B-Secondary Data
A-Primary data
Primary data is the one which is collected from fresh sources and for
the first time while carrying out the research.
In my project, the following primary sources of collecting data were
used:

1-Questionnaires:
The questionnaire (feedback form) consists of 15 questionsSurvey was
been conducted, during which these questionnaire were been filled.
2- Informal Discussion:
Through informal discussion with my external project guide and the
managers present for the survey I was able to collect a lot of useful information
about Shiv Prasad foods & milk products I also interacted with some of the
MIM KALAMB

Page 33

A STUDY ON EMPOLYEE ABSENTISUM

employees and earned many valuable suggestions, tips and advices from
them.
3- Personal Observations:
In this project of two months, I have observed the working of the Human
Resource Department and also the organization as a whole. I observed the
interaction which takes place between the employees in all the levels of the
hierarchy. This personal observation also helped me to form opinions for my
projects.
B-Secondary data
Secondary data is the second hand data, i.e., the data which has
already been collected and used by someone else. It is the ready to use data.
In my project the secondary sources referred to are the books related to
the subject, the organizational manuals, previous absenteeism, web sites,
manuals etc.
Tools used for analysis:
By making use of Microsoft Excel, various charts like the bar charts, tables etc.
were used to show the analysis.
This is the methodology which I applied for my project .

THE HOST
ORGANIZATION

SUGGESTIONS
1. Provide Incentives: Giving workers incentives for reduced absenteeism is
Not the same as rewarding or giving workers bonuses for reduced
Absenteeism. An incentive provides an employee with a boost to their
motivation to avoid unnecessary absenteeism. The general rule of thumb is
to reward workers more frequently the younger they are and the more
difficult the work is to perform.

2. Non Monetary Awards: A notice board could be put up at the shop floor
displaying the name of the workmen and his department who is being
MIM KALAMB

Page 60

A STUDY ON EMPOLYEE ABSENTISUM

conferred this award. This award could be like:
Worker of the month award based on Efficiency.
A quarterly attendance award.
Disciplinary awards can be given to workers against
whom there are no reports of misconduct.
3. Training to Supervisors: They must be given training on their behavioral
aspects with the workers and they must be given a human oriented
approach so that they prove to be good friends of the workers and the
working environment becomes pleasant.

4. Job Rotation: Workers must be given different jobs at different shifts so

that his job does not become monotonous, repetitive and boring. Flexi-time
can also be allowed within certain limitations.

5. Verification of Medical certificate: It is generally observed that workers

take unauthorized leave and then provide a medical certificate. The leave
then becomes authorized. Thus, the medical certificates must be verified by
the management for their authenticity.

6. Counseling: The Union representatives could visit the houses of the

absentee worker and counsel them about the ill effects of their being
absent. e.g., their financial losses, their importance in the production of the
company, their family conditions, etc.

7. Company as a second home: The management could display the

MIM KALAMB

Page 61

A STUDY ON EMPOLYEE ABSENTISUM

worker s names on the notice boards at the shop floor, wishing them on
their birthdays or encouraging them in company s activities like sports, etc.
this creates a sense of belonging among the workers towards the
company.

8. Wage Link: Wages could be directly linked to attendance and their

performance at work.

9.Disciplinary Action: If all the above measures fail to improve attendance

of a worker then strict disciplinary action is the only option against him.
10.Attendance Management Program: The purpose of this program is
to develop a willingness on the part of all the workers to attend work
regularly and to assist them in motivating their co-workers to attend work
regularly. This can be done through:
Addressing the physical and emotional needs of the workers.
Communicating the attendance goals of the organization so employees can
understand and identify with them.
Dealing with cases of excessive absenteeism effectively and fairly so
deterrence can occur.
CONCLUSION

Thus, it can be observed that absenteeism can be controlled

and reduced to a great extent if the workers are committed and are supported
by all levels of management. An effective attendance record-keeping system,

MIM KALAMB

Page 62

A STUDY ON EMPOLYEE ABSENTISUM

consultation and open communication by the management can create a
healthy productive work
environment in the company. This would reduce grievances and give greater
employee satisfaction.
Only when the positive approach is unsuccessful does the company need to
use the remedial approach to deal with habitual abusers or with excessive
absentee cases. In all cases the company's actions must be fair and
reasonable
and consistently applied.
While tackling workplace absenteeism by direct action may
alleviate theProblem in the short- term, addressing the cause of the problem
will provide long-term benefits.
