Slow progress on
Plymouth-to-Kohler
rail line project
By Kevin Struck, Growth
Management Educator,
UW-Extension
Now that a bid for the project
has been accepted, reconstruction
of the dormant Wisconsin Southern rail spur between Plymouth
and Kohler is finally scheduled to
begin this spring and be completed by October 31, 2015. It is
expected to be several years, however, before trains are actually entering the Village of Kohler.
The upcoming construction will
focus on preparing for rail traffic
between Plymouth and the Bemis
Manufacturing Companys facility
on the west side of Sheboygan
Falls. Although reconstructed
tracks and crossings will extend
through downtown Sheboygan
Falls and as far as the Ridge Court
cul-de-sac in Kohler, there will be
no reason for any trains to travel
beyond Sheboygan Falls until the
bridge across the ravine in Kohler
is repaired. That is not expected to
occur any time soon.
Rick LeMahieu, a consultant
with engineering design firm
Aecom, speaking at the recent
February 3 meeting of the Sheboygan Falls City Council about
the rail reconstruction, said, It is

true there are no plans to run trains

further than Bemis at this point.
The Wisconsin DOT owns the
right of way for the line to Kohler,
and it needs to bring the line up to
the ravine in Kohler in order for it
to run trains to Sheboygan someday. This process could take a
long time. The reality of trains
running to Sheboygan could be
measured in years at this point.
(Sheboygan Falls News, February
11, 2015)
Sheboygan Falls will feel an

impact much sooner. Although the

new tracks will be placed in the
same location as the previous
ones, new standards require wider
clearances than in the past. As a
result, several downtown buildings will lose some of their parking or loading areas, and lane
widths on some streets near a rail
crossing will decrease from 11
feet to 10 feet, a noticeable
change. People are going to feel
a bit crowded, said LeMahieu.

Celebrating the tunnel

mural!

By Kohler Elementary Art Teacher Stacy

Stanley.
I am so excited to announce that the tunnel mural is finally complete!
Last Spring Kohler Elementary art students started working on an art mural. The
main objective was to learn and witness
firsthand the effect a mural can make on its
surroundings (the school tunnel). It was a
great way to bring students together and
demonstrate how visuals can be a very powerful form of communication.

I am so proud of each students contribution big or small they all worked together to create an amazing cityscape that
brightens the tunnel and makes everyone
smile!
A huge thank you to Sonya Anderson for
all of the time she spent working with students each day. It was truly a labor of love.
I would also like to thank Kohler School
Friends for financially supporting the project.

The 94th State Education Convention will
be held on January 21-23, 2015 in Milwaukee. Board members are encouraged to
attend.
Superintendents Report
(Quynh Trueblood)
The winter concert put on by the elementary students and Mrs. Kukla showcased
the vocal talents of our students and extraordinary strength of the music program
under the direction of Mrs. Kukla. With not
an empty seat in sight, the joyful noise will
remain family treasures and perfectly
warming for the winter break.
A new year brings renewed energy for the
work of our schools and appreciation for
the governance by the board, leadership of
our administrators, teaching of our faculty
and support of our staff. We will move from
strength to strength as we stay true to our
purpose, take actions to realize our purpose, and achieve results. BlackBlacks
administrative indexing and report to the
the board is a critical part of the process.
More than 50 alumni and their families traveled across states, counties, and villages to
return to Kohler High School in celebration
of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Associations Anniversary of 100 years of
Boys State Basketball and 40 years of Girls
State Basketball. Kohler High School
teams competed in 9 state tournaments

and 5 state championships. A recognition

ceremony honored players, coaches, managers, and cheerleaders of the teams from
1950, 1956, 1972, 1976, 1980, 1982, 1983,
and 1999. The alumni, family, and friends
enjoyed the social reception as much as
the kids loved the cake. It was a special
evening of recognition, reunion, family, and
homecoming. I thank Doug Bocchini for his
leadership, Lynn Vander Schaaf for her administrative assistance, Amy Pace for her
research, marketing, and creation of the
promotional materials, and the Kohler
Alumni Association for their sponsorship.
Principals Report (Lori Neurohr)
Elementary News
Our Kindergartners have been very busy
since coming back from winter break. In
reading, they are learning about the elements of a story, using expression while
they read, learning letter sounds, identifying high frequency words and segmenting
words and blending letters to make words,
rhymes and syllables. At this point in the
year, they are also writing complete sentences independently, using sound writing
and high frequency words. During Reading
Workshop, students are becoming more independent and responsible while working
on a variety of independent reading activities and skill work in small groups. In math,
they are practicing their numbers (both
identification and writing) from 0 to
100. They are beginning to practice skip
counting and will soon begin addition. One
event they are really looking forward to is
the 100th day of school. In science, they
wrapped up their unit on animals and are
beginning to learn about matter.
Our second graders are working on expository (how to) writing. How to build a
snowman is the prompt they are
using. Students will peer edit and collaborate on their writing assignments, then
draw their snowman. The drawings will be
hung up and students will have to guess
whose snowman it is, based upon the written description. They have also been
working on poetry in reading and are having fun exploring the different types of po-

etry. Mrs. DePagter had a new student join

her class recently so she is contacting the
students teacher from his old school to set
up a pen pal exchange incorporating Face
Time and possibly even the Distance
Learning Center for a virtual field trip to the
school.
Middle School News
Last Wednesday the entire middle school
kicked off Bomber Pride our schools response to Positive Behavioral Interventions
and Supports (PBIS), in a school
assembly. Students then visited stations to
cover areas in the school such as the cafeteria, hallways, bathrooms, assemblies and
the school bus to define what our school
expectations are in each of these
locations. Students regathered in the theater to learn about our school behavior
focus, which is tardies. Tardies were selected because it is the number one behavior our students are struggling with right
now. Bomber Bucks will be handed out randomly to students who arrive on time and a
prize drawing will be conducted every two
weeks. A new and improved feature of our
prize drawings is having separate prizes for
elementary, middle and high school. The
Bomber Pride team is also working on
some other ways students can earn prizes
so they wont always have to be drawn randomly.

Senior Night Honors varsity

basketball players
Submitted by Suzanne Fink
With the regular season coming
to an end, the sad realization
comes to mind that these are the
last few weeks for our seniors.
Tonight, David Chen, Noah
Fink, Aidan Hogan, Patrick
Marzano, Charlie Tobin, Jordan
Toeller, John Tengowski, and
Jakob Wickert were honored for
their dedication to the boys basketball team.
Senior night is a night of goodbyes. Saying goodbye to two-adays, 6 am conditioning, long bus
rides, and grueling workouts. But
most importantly, it is saying
goodbye to your teammates. Its
the end of a journey and the beginning of the next step.
As parents and fans, its a
chance to congratulate and appreciate what they have accomplished
David Chen, Jordan Toeller, Charlie Tobin, Noah Fink, Patrick Marzano, Aidan Hogan, Jacob Wickert, John Tengowski

throughout the years. We can draw

a sense of pride from knowing they
gave their all to Kohler while they
were here and that the relationships and bonds they formed with
each other both as friends and
teammates will remain. Congratulations seniors.

a memorable experience through
virtually flawless service and the
finest of amenities. Spas rated
with Five Stars offer an exceptional experience with no detail
overlooked, with an expert staff
that caters to your every whim
and pampers you with the most
advanced treatments available.
The properties that receive
Forbes Five Star ratings are considered the best in the world,
said Michael Belot, General Manager of Destination Kohler. They
must meet and surpass Forbes
standards of excellence at every

level. Its a testament to our exceptional service that weve received Five Stars again this year.
The Forbes ratings also had
strong praise for The Immigrant
Restaurant, which received its
Four-Star ranking. To achieve this
level, the restaurant must have a
highly trained dining room staff
and feature creative, complex
foods. There is often a focus on
locally sourced food, and Forbes
has praised the restaurants selection of Wisconsin cheeses, as well
as its menu of creatively updated
American classics.
Known for its long history of
sophisticated, cutting-edge
plumbing products, Kohler Co.
decided to transform the original
workers dormitories into a
world-class resort hotel in 1981.
