ABSTRACT
In this presentation we are going to explain the design and fabrication of the electromagnetic engine. It works on
the principle of electromagnetic attraction. This greatly differs from the ordinary IC engine because it does not need
any fuel and works purely on electrical energy. In this engine design we have used electromagnet which is energized
by battery supply with timer circuit to attract the piston and the retraction stroke is done by the action of a spring.
Here an electromagnet is placed in the place of sparkplug which attracts the piston when current is supplied and in
the absence of the current the spring action takes place. By this a complete cycle is achieved which rotates the crank
shaft running the vehicle.

This project is about the design and construction

of electricity operated engine. In this engine
there is no use of fuels like diesel and petrol. So
this engine is operating on pure electricity from a
battery source. An electromagnet is positioned
on the top of the cylinder, while construction of
engine is traditional. And piston is just a
permanent magnet (Neodymium magnet). There
is no combustion within the cylinder so design of
piston and cylinder arrangement is simpler as
compared to IC Engine. So the accuracy of
dimensions is not a serious matter here. Here
even no huge amount of heat is generated as
compared to the fuel engines.

Working

The engine works on the principle of magnetic

attraction and by spring force. When the
neodymium magnet is attracted by the
electromagnet the piston moves down wards that
is from TDC to BDC. The piston moves back to
TDC by the spring force. The electromagnet is
controlled by a timing circuit which cut off the
power supply to it. When the neodymium
magnet will not have contact with the
electromagnet. The field of the magnet depends
upon the current supplied and no of windings.
The design is made simple and compact.

Construction

The construction is similar to IC engine. The

only change is the reciprocating mechanism is
made by powerful magnets. Electromagnet is
used to attract the piston which is a permanent
magnet. The electromagnet is connected to a
battery (Lead acid or Li Battery) In between the

Electromagnet: It is made of copper windings of

suitable gauge. Turns of windings are kept as per
magnetic field required. Consumption in wattage
for electromagnet is only to fulfill its copper
losses. Electromagnet will attract the piston
consuming very less power.

Design modification of the engine.
Conclusion

In this way we have designed an electromagnetic

engine. It is different from motor, because the
working principle is totally different as well as
the power consumption is also very less. The
only power consumed is the power consumed by
electromagnet and electromagnet used here is to
attract the permanent magnet. Movement of
magnet doesnt induce back electromotive force
in windings of electromagnet.
