3. Draw shear force and bending moment diagrams and mark the salient values.
{As shown in the Figure1} [16]
Figure 1:
4. (a) A rectangular beam 200mm wide and 350mm deep is freely supported over a
span of 4.8m and carries a load of 3.6 kN/m. It also carries three equal point
loads W kN each, equispaced over the beam. If the permissible bending stress
is 8MPa, find the maximum allowable value of W.
(b) State the assumptions involved in the theory of simple bending. [10+6]
5. A steel section shown in figure2 is subjected to a shear force of 80KN. Determine
shear stress at the important points and sketch the shear distribution across the
section. [16]

6. A cast iron pipe of 220mm internal diameter and 15mm metal thickness is closely
wound with a layer of 5mm diameter steel wire with a tensile stress of 42N/mm2 .
Calculate the stresses induced in pipe and the steel wire if the internal fluid pressure
in the pipe is 32N/mm2 .
E = 1 × 105 N/mm2 for C.I.
Es = 2 × 105 N/mm2 1/m=0.3. [16]
7. A rectangular rosette strain gauge records the following values for linear strain at a
point in two dimensional stress system: ex = 500 * 10−6 , ey = -125 * 10−6 and e45
= 250 * 10−6 the latter being at 450 to the X and Y axes. Determine the principal
strains and stresses. Take E = 2.1 * 106 N/mm2 and µ = 0.3. [16]
8. A hollow steel shaft of external diameter equal to twice the internal diameter has
to transmit 2250 kW power at 400 r.p.m. If the angle of twist has to exceed 10 in
a length equivalent to 16 times the external diameter and the maximum turning
moment is 1/4 times the mean, calculate the maximum stress and the diameter of
the shaft. Assume the modulus of rigidity to be 0.8 * 105 N/mm2 . [16]
