ONLINE SHOPPING: It's here to stay, so shop wisely
By Rueben Dudley, Petaling Jaya, Selangor
0 comments
WE used to say that people who constantly have to go to the stores or malls and "shop till they
drop", and run up their credit cards to the limit have a shopping addiction.
Today, with online shopping available 24/7 from the comfort of where one is, these people
"shop and never stop", and not just to their credit limit.
Many have accumulated significant debt. This is possibly worse than a "mere" shopping
addiction.
Surveys by many rating agencies reveal that online shopping is growing exponentially,
involving both genders from all age groups and communities.
Consumers feel encouraged, even lured, to shop online because:
PRICE. They can quickly compare and find out the best deals online;
CONVENIENCE. People can shop anytime. They don't need to commute and the entire
experience can be hassle-free;
FREE DELIVERY. Many online vendors don't charge extra to deliver;
OFFERS. Promotions by online vendors, such as daily deals and special sales, generate
excitement -- too good to miss; and,
INNOVATION. Smartphones and tablet apps make it easy, even for the less tech-savvy, to
compare prices when shopping or researching products. "Hey presto, your bargain is only a
click away!"
It is said that the shopping addict gets the urge to splurge and has a surge of good feelings.
Online shopping is a fad that is growing quickly and, undoubtedly, more people will follow
this trend, embracing it enthusiastically because it is the "in-thing".
It makes them feel in control and, most importantly, appears to fulfil their desires almost
instantaneously.
But compulsive shopping and spending, in whatever form, generally makes a person feel
worse.
It gives the same short-term high, followed by a "low" feeling, as present in addictions such
as alcoholism, gambling and overeating.
And, add to that growing debt. One finds oneself in a situation that's far from great.
But, online shopping can indeed be a fabulous experience if engaged with a sense of
objectivity, responsibility and caution.
These benefits should not lull anyone into complacency, however. Each individual must
figure out why and how he or she wants to shop online, what items are needed and the
amount of resources -- financial, time and effort -- that he or she can devote.
Surfing aimlessly, being attracted by things that you do not really need and impulsive buying
should be avoided.
It is important to take the time to shop online securely and to approach with caution the sites
where you choose to shop.
Then, not only can you find great bargains in terms of price and quality, but you can also do
it without worrying that your identity will be stolen in the process, which is one of the hazards
of online shopping.
Another point of caution is for parents, the elderly, teachers and community leaders to alert,
guide and advise children and youth on the benefits and dangers of online shopping.
Online shopping is here to stay and is growing faster than brick-and-mortar sales. In addition
to its benefits, the time saved can, in turn, be committed to quality family time, exercise or
leisure.

Furthermore, a verbal
argument often focuses on who is right regarding a specific issue, while a well-written and
researched argument essay focuses on what is the right side of a particular issue. In short,
an argument essay must be logical from beginning to end.
