Students will be shown a portion of a video clip. This


clip is an example of a 9th grade English class that
created their own version of Act 3 scene 1.

ASSESSMENT (How will asses student understanding?):


Performance Assessment:
Students will have the opportunity to act out their
skit, create and show a video of their scene, or show
a storyboard of their plans. Each group will share
their creations with the class as an entrance activity
the next class period.

There must be evidence of participation from each


student. If the students create a video, I expect to
see each one of them present. If they create a script,
all students must participate in the reading and
lastly, if they create a storyboard, all students must
contribute in some artistic way.

LESSON PLAN SEQUENCE & PACING (How will I organize this lesson?
How much time will each part of the lesson take?)
1. Video clip example of modern day Romeo & Juliet (10 minutes)
o Explain to students that they will have to use modern day
language rather than copying the words from the book
presented in Shakespearian language.
2. Have a discussion about the use of synonyms and how this can help

students with this activity (10 minutes)


o What is a synonym?
o How will synonyms help you with this activity?
o How can we use a thesaurus or dictionary to help us?
3. Show students how to use the online Shakespearean Dictionary on
the computer/laptop (5 minutes)

4. Allow students the remainder of the class period to work in
predetermined groups to create their modern version of a scene
from Romeo and Juliet. They will be able to use the flip cameras,
markers and poster board, or write out their own script. (65
minutes)
5. The following day, students will start class off by sharing their
creations (performance assessment).
