I am an English teacher at SMK Danau Kota. This school is a coeducation school consisting of 1000 students.

The majority of the race that

makes up the schools diversity is Malay (approximately 55%). However,
there are other races like Chinese (20%), Indian (20%) and others (5%). This
school is located in the suburbs of Danau Kota, which is at the outskirts of
Kuala Lumpur. The residents of this area can be categorised as the uppermiddle class society. Most of them work as lecturers, educators, government
staffs, and doctors.
This school is still new, approximately around 2 years old. However,
this school holds a quite impressive record and achievement despite its
young age. The schools debate team won the districts competition, holding
the champion prize. The schools taekwondo team even won gold medal
competing at the state level. The schools swimming team even managed to
snatch 2 gold medals as well at the district level, and managed to grab 2
silver medals at the state level.
Despite the schools impressive achievements in the extra co-curricular
activities, it still lacks in terms of facilities. For example, there is only one
computer laboratory that can accommodate 30 students at one time, as
oppose to the schools 800 students. There are no wireless internet
connection provided, forcing some teachers to bring their own laptop and
internet broadband to school. Interesting enough, despite its lack of
computers for the use of students, the school has a set of OHP and IE
scanner provided for the teachers use in class.
I was assigned to teach Form 1 Adam. This class is the second class
from a total of 6 classes. There are 30 students in this class which holds an
equal 15 girls and 15 boys. The students in this class mostly come from a
upper-middle class family with an high average family income. The students
have a high proficiency level in English, which means that they are able to
understand and use English in their conversation.
The students in the class have a good listening and communication
skills, but they have a rather short attention span. They usually pay their
attention for the first 20 minutes of the lesson, and after that they lose interest
in the subject taught. Concerning this issue, I decided to come up with an
interesting teaching and learning session for the students. I will incorporate

the usage of Computer-based Instructional Package (CIP), a Display Material,

and a Manipulative.
Before I enter the class and start teaching, I have already prepared a
suitable lesson plan to help me create a clear view on what I am going to
teach. For this time around, Ill be teaching Characterisations based on the
novel Black Beauty by Anna Sewell.
Based on the Lesson Plan prepared, I decided to use imply the
Educational Technology Method and the Manual Approach in my teaching. I
decided to use an eclectic approach in my teaching, which is a smooth
combination of both the Inductive Approach and the Deductive Approach.
For the Inductive Approach, I will focus more on the explanation of the
topic of the lesson that I will be teaching. I decided to use PBBK, or also
known as the Computer Assisted Learning (CAL) in my set induction. I
choose to use a Powerpoint presentation as the medium to explain what
characters, characteristics, and the types of characters. To prolong the short
attention span of the students, I decided to use attractive images and photos
of the characters from the novel to be inserted inside the slides. Then, I will
focus on the Deduction Approach, I will give them quizzes as a mean to test
their understandings on the lesson taught.
