4. "Common tone" movement between the I-IV and V chords.


The common tone is kept from chord to chord. The other two tones move to nearest chord tone.
"Do" is the common tone between the I and IV chords; "sol" is the common tone between the I and V chords.

5. Compose 4 measures in 4/4 time, utilizing the given rhythm and chord progression.
First, write out the root position triads specified in the bottom treble clef.
Second, compose your melody, making sure that all notes on strong beats (1 & 3) are chord tones.
You may also utilize passing tones and neighbor tones.
The penultimate note should also be a chord tone.

7. Analyze the following simplified version of Try to Remember by placing the correct
Roman Numeral underneath the bass line (Bass clef).
Place chord symbols above the top staff.
Circle the non-harmonic tones and label as either passing tones (PT) or Neighbor tones (NT).
Finally, label all dominant, pre-dominant and tonic (D, P or T) chords underneath their Roman Numeral.
There is a non-diatonic chord in the penultimate measure. It is built on the flatted 7th degree of
the scale. It should be labeled as "bVII"
The chord in bars 2 and 6 is an inversion of the I chord (3rd of chord in the bass). Label these "I6".
