The Boral Plasterboard D-Stud System is a

steel wall framing system that is particularly
suited to acoustically sensitive applications,
providing enhanced acoustic performance in
staggered stud party walls. It is designed to
provide additional stability to non-load
bearing walls up to 13.4 metres in height.
The D-Stud Wall System overcomes many of
the torsion and rigidity problems of C Studs
and can be applied to single-sided systems
without the need for nogging or bridging
between the studs. The system has been
successfully installed at Highpoint Cinemas,
Melbourne.
The D-Stud Wall System is the subject of
patent and registered design applications
and should only be used with Boral
Plasterboard unless express written
permission is given by Boral Australian
Gypsum Limited.
This Technical Manual details use of the
D-Stud Wall System in various applications
requiring non-load bearing single-sided walls
or walls of more than 3.6 metres in height.

10 metre high walls no problem with D-Stud.

D-Stud

Description

Description
Boral Plasterboards patented D-Stud Wall
System consists of two wall types:
The Low Rise D-Stud Wall System uses
rollformed top-hat sections as studs and is
particularly suited to wall heights up to
6.6 metres, typically used in multi-residential
construction.
The High Wall System comprises two Zed
Purlins laminated together to form a hat-shape
stud section and is suited to applications up to
13.4 metres, particularly cinema walls where
excellent acoustic performance is also required.
A D-Clip is used when installing the top-hat
D-Studs to the top track from floor level. Single or
multiple layers of Boral Plasterboard sheets are
then screw fixed to steel framing with bugle
headed, drill point gypsum screws.

Party walls in apartment construction

is an ideal use of D-Stud.

Acoustically the D-Stud System complies with

the impact noise isolation requirements of the
Building Code of Australia and using the
appropriate cavity absorber can meet a range of
acoustic performance standards, including
STC55 sound transmission loss in low rise walls
and STC72 in high wall systems. The D-Stud
System also meets the acoustic criteria for high
cinema walls recommended by Watson Moss
Growcott (WMG) acoustic consultants in their
Cinema Design/Construction, Noise Control
Requirements Report.
Lightweight and easily erected, the D-Stud
System allows extended stud spacing, optional
use of top and bottom tracks and the absence of
nogging and strapping. With simple connections
and fewer materials required, the D-Stud System
is more economical in installation time and cost
than alternative drywall systems. Due to the use
of the top-hat type section, the D-Stud System
is more stable than a C section stud lined on one
side. It can accommodate additional wall heights
and pressures without the need for bridging,
noggings or additional structural columns or girt
members. The D-Stud provides uncompromised
acoustic performance due to the elimination of
noise transmission through bridging.

Attributes

Sound isolation

Limitations

The acoustic performance of the D-Stud Wall System can

be tailored to design requirements by varying
plasterboard layers and thicknesses and acoustic
insulation. The staggered stud format of the wall provides
impact sound isolation where required by the Building
Code of Australia.

The D-Stud Wall System has been tested up to STC55 in

Low Rise Walls and up to STC72 in High Wall Systems
(also satisfying the low frequency performance criteria for
cinema construction).

Non-axial load bearing

In general, stud spacing for low rise walls is 600mm
and 1200mm for high walls, depending on board
configuration.
All maximum spans, limiting structural heights, limiting
heights in fire and acoustic capacity tests have been
performed using Boral Standard Core Plasterboard,
Firestop or Wet Area Firestop constructed to standard
or fire rated D-Stud wall details. Performance results
cannot be assumed with the use of other materials.

Economical

Limiting heights

With fewer materials and contractors (the drywall

contractor can complete most of the construction), the
D-Stud System is rapid and easy to build on site, meaning
faster construction and substantial cost savings.

Limiting heights for non load-bearing Low Rise and High

Wall D-Stud Systems (as detailed in the System Selector
section of this manual) are the lesser of maximum fire
heights and structural heights for a given wall
configuration. These limiting heights meet the design
criteria of structural testing for lightweight construction as
detailed in Section C1.8 of the Building Code of Australia.
Limiting heights in fire were derived from a full scale test
conducted by CSIRO, Division of Building, Construction
and Engineering. The maximum fire heights listed assume
50Pa pressure. Where greater pressures and fire loadings
are likely, please consult Boral Plasterboard.

Lightweight
Lighter than other systems, the D-Stud System requires
less foundation size and storage space and related costs.

Fire resistance
The D-Stud System is capable of up to 2 hours fire
resistance. The system can be constructed to achieve fire
resistance ratings to meet various design requirements.

Structural stability

Limiting structural heights have been obtained by full

scale tests at VIPAC laboratories in Melbourne and the
NATA registered laboratories of Boral Plasterboard at Port
Melbourne, and have been certified by Taylor Thomson
Whitting Pty Ltd.

The D-Stud System can provide walls up to 13.4 metres in

height without strapping or nogging, that are extremely
stable and capable of withstanding design pressures
without rotation or torsional buckling.

D-Stud

High Wall Applications

Why D-Stud?

The superior acoustic performance of the

D-Stud wall enables it to be applied in many
areas where a high acoustic rating (Sound
Transmission Loss Coefficient) is required.

As well as achieving wall heights up to

13.4 metres, the D-Stud wall minimises noise
transfer and is capable of an STC 72
acoustic rating. It also satisfies the low
frequency performance criteria required for
cinemas.

For example inter-tenancy walls in multiresidential or hotel / motel development,

cinema walls, commercial construction and
exterior or shaft walls in all of the former.

1. Built as a separating wall between the

Interactive entertainment area and the
cinemas, the D-Stud wall will provide
excellent acoustic isolation from the
transmission of noise from one area
to another.
2. The D-Stud High Wall System enables
the construction of very high cinema
walls with superior acoustic
performance to accommodate the latest
in cinema screen design and sound
technology.

department store

The structural stability of the D-Stud wall

makes it particularly suitable for use in
shopping centre foyers and atriums and in
residential conversions of warehouses and
other high-wall buildings.
Structural and acoustic performance
combined, the D-Stud is the obvious steel
stud wall system for construction of
auditoriums, theatres and sporting stadiums.

D-Stud is also useful in new hotel

construction. The Staggered D-Stud
System (DSS) used in separating walls
between rooms and corridors fulfills the
required acoustic and fire ratings, while
again keeping the wall width to a
minimum.

The use of the D-Stud assists in reducing

wall widths, allowing maximum living
space within each unit while still achieving
the required acoustic and fire ratings.

Older residential building conversions/

refurbishments with high ceilings are
easily constructed using the D-Stud Wall
System. They are achieved without
nogging or bridging between the studs,
increased stud spacings, simple
connections and less plasterboard screws.

D-Stud enables high acoustic and fire

ratings to be achieved in construction of
inter-tenancy walls when installed in
accordance with the instructions detailed
in this manual.

Usual limitations to layout of habitable and

non-habitable areas are also overcome
due to the superior acoustic performance
of the D-Stud wall. Living areas can now
adjoin amenities areas or similar, as the
minimum STC50 (with impact resistance)
requirement between habitable and nonhabitable areas is easily achieved using
the D-Stud wall.

4. Application of the D-Stud in the stairwell

will enable greater wall heights to be
reached, meet the required fire rating and
minimise any impact noise transferred
from the stairwell to tenancy bedrooms
or other habitable areas.
5. In hotels, use of the D-Stud Wall System
will reduce sound transmission in areas
such as walls dividing corridors and
tenancies, plant rooms and storage rooms.
(Staff may be moving equipment in and
out and disturbing guestrooms and
conference areas.)
6. D-Stud simplifies building conversions
involving high interior walls such as old
warehouses; spanning greater heights
while providing the necessary fire
resistance rating and superior acoustic
performance.

General Installation

Inspection
Building inspection and certification of the D-Stud wall
should occur at the frame stage of construction before
sheeting commences and should be inspected for any
damage, correct position, stud and track fixing and the
presence of services. Inspection should be undertaken
again before taping or jointing, focusing on board
orientation, treatment of butt joints, the presence of any
damage or screw overdriving and correctness of screw
centres. A final appraisal is necessary prior to coating and
painting to assess suitability for finishing.
During the construction of a D-Stud wall, the following
guidelines should be followed to ensure building
approval and certification:

D-Studs cut to length

D-Studs to be cut 16mm short of the floor to ceiling height
to allow 16mm expansion gap at top. In sufficient
quantities studs may be ordered custom cut to required
lengths.
D-Stud fastened to track
D-Stud flanges should be fastened to bottom track flanges
using Wafer Head drill point screws at 600mm centres
with opposite sides staggered by 300mm. High Wall
D-Studs can be fixed to either a track or parallel angles
with a 10-16 x16 self drilling screw through each flange.

Damage
Components must not be used if fractured or damaged.
Boral Plasterboard should be installed according to the
instructions detailed in this manual.

D-Stud installation
In construction of Low Rise Walls, top-hat D-Studs should
be stood in position and their flanges fastened to bottom
track flanges, using the D-Clip to provide a friction fit to
hold the top of the stud in position prior to fixing the
plasterboard. D-Studs should be staggered at no more
than 600mm centres (offset by 300mm from opposite stud)
and fixed with a D-Clip.

Align the top and bottom tracks of the wall accurately
according to the plan layout. Top and bottom tracks to be
cut 20mm short.
Track fixing
Track to be fixed to floor/soffit with appropriate fasteners at
600mm maximum centres.

D-Stud fitted to head

D-Studs to be fitted with D-Clip for staggered stud systems
to hold the top of the stud in position (friction fit) during
construction.
In High Walls the D-Studs (2 x Zed purlins) with
prepunched end holes are bolted to the steel roof beam or
concrete soffit via brackets with slotted holes. The slotted
holes allow for movements that occur within the building
elements during normal service and expansion of the stud
member in fire service. Written approval from the Building
Design Engineer should be sought before attaching the
High Wall D-Stud System to the proposed or existing
structure.

D-Stud non load-bearing wall systems

18

D-Stud

General Installation

High Wall D-Stud assembly

Plasterboard installation

The High Wall D-Stud is assembled using 2 lapped Zed

purlins stitched together through the overlap with
10-16 x16 self drilling screws at 600mm maximum
centres.

Plasterboard should be oriented horizontally and fastened

to the stud flanges at a maximum of 300mm centres. When
installing additional plasterboard sheets, vertical and
horizontal joints (butt joints) should be staggered at a
minimum of 200mm from joints of previous layers.
A nominal 5mm gap should be left at the perimeter of the
wall for non-fire rated partitions and to the sides and top of
the wall for caulking. Where deflection at the head is to be
accommodated, the appropriate gap should be left for
later caulking. The perimeter of the wall should be sealed
according to detail for fire and acoustic rating
requirements. Where a D-Stud wall abuts another wall, it
is important that the connection is airtight and extends to
the full depth of the plasterboard. Even the smallest hole
through the joint could downgrade the performance of the
wall. Treatment of the deflection head is an important
example. The deflection head must cope with deflection
while maintaining acoustic and fire integrity. An alternative
acoustic treatment is to provide a slip joint in the layers of
plasterboard at the head, allowing for movement of up to
40mm in either direction. No acoustic sealant is used as
the expected head movements will exceed the capacity of
the sealant.

Lay Zed purlins on a smooth area such as a concrete

floor slab. Sit the purlins as shown with the wide flange
resting over the narrow flange.

Treading on the flange of the underlapping purlin will

stand it up with the overlapping purlin in its correct
position. The web of the underlapping purlin should be
against the lip of the overlapping purlin.
Treading on both flanges as shown should hold the
sections together tight enough to enable easy
screwing together with the 10-16 x16 self drilling
screws at 600mm maximum centres along the stud.
Should the D-Studs need to be cut to size, the cut end
should rest on the floor.

Alternative to Standing Assembly

Purlins may be supplied with pre-punched holes at 3 metre
centres. The purlins can then be lined up and bolted through
the holes using standard 12mm purlin bolts. This will pull the
purlins together tightly - making it faster and easier to stitch
the purlins together at 600 centres (between the bolts).

Butt joints

Control joints

Butt joints should be back-blocked with 200mm wide

sheets of 13 or 16mm Boral Plasterboard Firestop, screw
fastened vertically over butt joints at 200mm centres and
fastened to the flanges of the D-Studs.

Control joints should be provided wherever structural

expansion joints are located (where there is provision in
the structural members supporting the wall for movement).
For variations to standard design parameters (wall heights
greater than 13.4 metres) refer to Boral Plasterboard.
Treatment of control joints should be submitted to the
Project Engineer for approval. At wall corner junctions,
additional D-Studs should be used to provide support.

achieve desired acoustic performance that may affect the
structural requirements must be approved in writing by a
qualified structural engineer.

No sealant is put into

Plasterboard

Jointing
Plasterboard wall linings should be properly taped,
jointed (including stopping of fastener heads) and finished
to the required standard of finish for plasterboard wall
construction (as per AS/NZS 2589.2:1997, "Gypsum
linings in residential and light commercial construction Application and finishing").

Caulking
Caulk all perimeter gaps in fire rated walls with Boral
Plasterboard Fyreflex Sealant (or other approved sealant)
as shown in the construction details of this manual.
Acoustic sealant is only required at the base of the wall on
the second and fourth layers of board allowing the first
and third layers to rest on the floor during installation (if
using a three layer system, then provision should be made
on the second and third layers of board). The second layer
of plasterboard should start approx. 5-10mm above the
floor and the acoustic sealant should be applied to the
base of the second layer prior to the installation of the
third layer. A similar gap should be provided below the
fourth layer of plasterboard.

General Installation

Penetrations & Services

Certification

Extreme care should be taken at the detailing and

construction stages to avoid any penetrations in party
walls that will downgrade the acoustic isolation capacity of
the wall, specifically plumbing and electrical services or
structural members and flooring that cause acoustical
bridging (allowing sound to be transmitted from one area
to another).

Structural, fire and acoustic certification of these systems

applies only where the plasterboard used is manufactured
by Boral Australian Gypsum. Fire-rated systems must be
installed strictly in accordance with each test specification
and opinion noted in this manual. Written approval from
the Building Design Engineer should be sought before
attaching the D-Stud System to the proposed or existing
structure. Prior to installing plasterboard on the High Wall
D-Stud System, the Site Supervising Engineer should
inspect the connection detail. An inspection report must
be supplied to the contractor approving the works as in
accordance with the technical specification.

Where unavoidable, electrical or water services up to

20mm in diameter may pass through holes made in the
D-Stud. The holes must be a maximum of 32mm in
diameter, made through both webs of the stud and centred
30mm from the face of the stud flange. There must be
200mm between the base of the stud and the first hole
and between subsequent holes. The services must,
however, run separately along each side of the wall and
not bridge the wall from one side to the other in any way.
Where larger services or waste pipes must be enclosed
within the wall, a Twin Stud Wall System (DST) should be
considered to allow space to enclose the services without
bridging, or the services should be run vertically so that
the studs are not at risk of being damaged.
Note:
Minimum stud depth to be 61mm, minimum stud gauge to
be 0.75mm BMT. Plasterboard must be taped and set.
All penetrations should be sealed according to sealant
manufacturers detail. Acoustic sealant used to seal top
and bottom tracks should be proven prior to application.
