Choose two artists discussed in the lecture and consider their work in relation to remediation

Art remediation is the notion of refashioning/remaking older forms of medium to pay homage,
interpret, improve upon or redirect the meaning of the previous art piece. With technology taking
such a big stand in the modern ear it is no wondering the development of remediation is moving at
an unfathomable rate.
The science of digitization has taken the art world to an extreme level of immediacy and
transparency, merging the boundaries of what is real and what is fabricated. Digital art is the
ultimate remediation of all art forms that have come before; the possibilities it holds are infinite.
Whereas photographs have been valued for their ability to capture a specific moment in time, digital
art possesses the capability of literally creating that moment. In the digital world, the artist not only
serves as the interpreter and communicator of life, but can also act as the creator of life.. (A Study
of Remediation in a Digital World, What is Remediation? n.d.)
Through remediation, art can be created in a new light and be reborn into the modern age, while
retaining it's core meaning. It has been argued that digital remediation can destroy and devalue the
purity and originality of art despite making it globally excisable and turning art into an extension of
simply a commodity.
As a pioneer of performance art with the use and exploration of video in her work Joan Jonas is
considered a very important woman to appear in the 1960's and as asserted by Mallony Joan Jonas
weaves together performance, myth, her ground-breaking video techniques, sound, time, and her
evocative mirror imagery- detailing one artist's life-long, art- making quest. (2003, p xxiv)
Alluding how important her work with mediums, such as video, is considered within the art
intraindustry. Joan Jonas implores the sense of change, transformation and remediation within her
work; in her piece Mirage many different images are transformed into other objects. For example,
through the use of chalk a sun being rubbed out and turned into a new moon. The piece has no story
but work highly on opposite. This could be seen as simple form of remediation in the form of
creating the physical into chalk then remediating the chalk image through video, constantly taking
the previous object further and further from it's natural, or original source. Jonas moved later on to
remediating fairy tale narrative structuresJonas turned explicitly toward fairy-tale and myth, using
narrative structures alongside her own complex iconographies. (Kaye, 1996, p.89) This implicates
the evolution of her own remediation, by juxtaposing remediated fairy-tale narratives with her own
images she works closely with exploring old art through initiative means. Therefore broadening the
gaze of current remediation.
Gunter Brus is a controversial and well renowned writer, performance artist and painter ; infamous
for drinking his own urine, vomiting and masturbating while singing the Australian national
anthem. He had a post-modern way of making art, focusing interiorly on the process as oppose to
the finished product. Although, not always well received; as Wilso asserts however, Brus's
Aktionen began to push him to further physical and mental extremes as he analysed his own body
and its functions. All symbolism was dispensed with as Brus publicly urinated, defecated and cut
himself with a razor-blade. (n.d., para 2) his work seemed to have a level of remediation within it
and this could be seen as the symbology of his self mutilation and various public indecencies.
