This work procedure serves as the guideline in the execution of the painting and
coating activities to be able to attain the quality of work required for the specified
contract project.

5.1

General Procedures

5.1.1 Procedures, conditions, and precautions to be followed in the preparation


of a surface for painting, as well as paint handling and applications, shall
be in accordance with this specification.
5.1.2 Paint and painting materials shall be delivered to the shop and job site in
sealed and labelled containers. They shall be stored in a location that is
well ventilated and free from excessive heat, and keep the materials away
from open flame or other sources of ignition.
5.1.3 Paint shall be thoroughly mixed immediately prior to application. Power
stirrer is used if paint quantity is over 5 liters. Pints should be filtered
through 30 to 60- meshes prior to use.
5.1.4 Paints shall be thinned in accordance with the manufacturers instructions.
Only thinners of a type recommended by the paint manufacturer shall be
used.
5.1.5 Precautions shall be taken to prevent paint from being applied to
nameplate, couplings, shafts or other finished surfaces (valves, stems,
bearings, linkages, vent openings, instrument window; to line or
equipment designation markings and adjacent painted surfaces; or to the
interior of equipment. Any paint spot or streaks that may have formed
shall be removed on completion of painting.
5.1.6 Precautions shall be taken to prevent damages to such equipment motors,
compressors, motorized vehicle or welding machine adjacent to or
downwind of any cleaning or painting operations.
5.1.7 Painted surfaces shall not be handled until the paint has dried, except
where the coating is to be heat cured. Areas that have been damaged in
handling shall be re-cleaned and re-touched with the same number of
coats and type of paint as were previously applied to the surface material.
If the prime coat on steel or pipe surfaces has been damaged, all paint
shall be removed from the affected area; then they shall be cleaned and
repainted.
5.2

Storage & Handling of Paints and Abrasive


5.2.1 Paints and thinners shall be stored in well-ventilated buildings at storage
temperatures as recommended in the manufacturers data sheet.
5.2.2 Paints materials used at construction sites shall be covered with
appropriate canvas, tarpaulins for a temporary storage period not to
exceed 14 days.
5.2.3 Temperature sensitive and self-polymerization paints materials shall be
stored in air conditioned storage area.
5.2.4 Each paint container shall be clearly marked in accordance with 09SAMSS-060.

5.2.5 Paints shall not be used if container showing a sign of leakage.


5.2.6 Paints which have exceeded the shelf life given in the Saudi Aramco Data
Sheet shall be set aside and must not be used unless written authorization
to the contrary is given by the Consulting Services Department.
5.2.7 Abrasive is kept dry and stored in dry and clean areas. SAES-H-100, Para.
5.2.1
5.2.8 Storage area should be ventilated and dust generation minimized when
handling loose bulk product. Use good housekeeping practices to keep
dust to a minimum as per recommended in the Manufactures data sheet.
5.3

Weather Conditions

During Surface preparation and application of paint the weather conditions shall be as
follows:

The substrate temperature should 3 C above the dew point.

b.

The substrate temperature should above than 10 C or not more than the
temperature limit given in the applicable Saudi Aramco Data Sheet.
Humidity should less than 85%
Paint shall not be applied if one or more of the adverse weather conditions exist
such as:

1. Wind is strong enough to blow sand, salt spray, or other foreign matter
onto the surface being painted.
2. Wind is strong enough to cause by dry spray or disturb the spray
pattern when application is by spray gun.
5.4

Surface Preparation
5.4.1 Prior to painting, all surfaces shall be thoroughly cleaned of any material that
may result in premature failure of the paint coating. For general surface
preparation procedure and requirements, the SAES-H-100 Saudi Aramco Surface
Preparation Specifications, shall be used as reference.
5.4.2 Prior to using compressed air for the surface preparation, the quality of the air
downstream of the separator shall be tested by blowing the air into clean white
blotter for two minutes to check for any contamination, oil or moisture. The test
also shall be made after any interruption of the air compressor operations.
The air shall be used only if the blotter test indicates no visible contamination, oil
or moisture.
5.4.3 If contaminants are evident, the equipment deficiencies shall be corrected and
the air stream shall be restored. Separator shall be bled continuously.

5.4.4 Surfaces, which are determined to have been blasted with contaminated air,
must be re-blasted with clean air and abrasive.
5.5

Paint Application
5.5.1 Oil, grease. Soil dust or foreign matter deposited on the surface after surface
preparation has been completed shall be removed prior to painting. If rusting
occurs after completion of surface preparation, the surface shall be re-cleaned in
accordance with SAES-H-100.
5.5.2 Paint shall be applied by one, or a combination, of the following methods.

Brushing

Roller Coating

Air Spraying

Airless Spraying

The method of application shall be governed by the paint manufacturers


recommendations for the particular paint being applied.
5.5.3 Conventional solvent-based paints generally shall not be applied to exterior in
damp, humid weather. The paint manufacturers recommendations shall be
consulted in case for possible special temperature requirements. No paint shall
be applied to a surface at a temperature that will cause blistering or porosity or
otherwise be detrimental to the life of the paint.
5.5.4 Where the specified dry-film thickness is not achieved, (paint thickness gaugeelcometer, as a measuring device), additional coats shall be applied until the
required thickness is obtained.
5.5.5 Shop-primed steel and pipes surfaces damaged during erection shall be repaired,
as required, to restore the surface to its original condition before finish coats are
applied.

5.6

Inspection
All inspection shall be carried out in accordance to specific Saudi Aramco Specification.
The QC Inspector shall verify that the paint shall be applied when:

1. The Structure is not less than 10C and not more than 60C
2. The surface is free from grease oil and rust. Adverse weather conditions do not
exist. No strong winds that may cause dry spray or a poor spray pattern.
Note:
Recoating shall not be carried out until the earlier coat has completely cured on
completion of the application the dry film thickness will be checked.
The finished coat shall be free of runs, sags, drips, dry sprayer foreign matter and
shall be in accordance with paragraph 5.1.6 of SAES-H-100
Areas requiring repairs shall be repaired as per paragraphs 8.3 and 8.4 of SAES H100.
The maximum brush size for stripe coating is 125mm
5.8

Safety

5.8.1 Minimum safety requirements applicable to shop and field painting shall be as
given in SAES-H-102.
5.8.2 Respirable air-fedhoods shall be worn while blasting or spray painting is in
progress.
5.8.3 Safety shoes and coveralls shall always be worn and safety hats shall be worn as
required by proponent organizations.
5.8.4 All blasting and coating equipment and associated attachments shall be
adequately earthed to avoid electrostatic discharges.
5.8.5 Blasting shall be equipped with a remote control shut-off dead man.
5.8.6 The blast nozzles shall be electrically connected to an external ground in order to
prevent static electrical discharges or shocks to operating personnel.
5.8.7 Respirable air-fed abrasive blasting hoods and OSHA approved in-line respirable
air filters shall be used at all times by abrasive blasting personnel.
5.8.8 Hearing protection shall be worn where abrasive blasting is in progress.
5.8.9 Airless spray guns shall never be pointed at anyone or at any part of the body.
5.8.10Leather gloves shall be worn by the operator whenever the airless spray gun is in
use.

the work activities to the Project Quality Plan and other project requirements are to be
filed per SAEP-122 and to be submitted to Saudi Aramco at the close of the project.

Attachments B, C, & D However, these documents are filed and could be
accessed and reviewed by Saudi Aramco at any time. The paint crew supervisors shall
fill out a log on a daily basis recording all problem areas, delays, non-compliances and
corrective action taken.
9.0

Responsibilities

The following list comprises of the minimum responsibilities for each designated
person.
9.1

Project Manager
The Project manager is in overall charge of the work production units on this
project. He monitors compliance by all personnel and all parties governing
procedure, standards and specifications, the Project Quality Manual, the QC

Inspection Plan IFC Drawing Safety Plan, relevant clients specs and Industry
Codes as per the project requirements. He communicates with other
departments (Procurement Vendors) and the Client for work in Progress, inquires
and other concerns that need to be addressed for a continuous flow of work.
9.2

Site Construction Manager


His responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Directly supervisors by leading a team of Superintendents and Supervisors


on the execution and conformance to this procedure.
Ensures that all site work is achieved in a timely manner and on time and
complies to all standards and specifications
Coordinate and reports to the Project or Construction Manager the work
progress and any problems that may arise prior to and during the lowering
activities.

Project Quality Control Supervisor


Oversees all activities of the Quality Control Work

Compliances Quality reports and recommendations to the QA/QC Manager


for any problems encountered during the execution of lowering and the
project as a whole.
Ensures compliance by all Site Personnel to this procedure to the
specification quality plan and the IFC drawings.
Supervisors and monitors the QC Inspectors and their daily activities
Adheres to the non-conformance procedures at this level
Submits all QC documentation to Saudi Aramco for review
Compiles all QC documents (daily reports test results, vendor certificates
and NCR reports) for permanent project records which shall be submitted
to Saudi Aramco for review.

Quality Control Inspector


The QC Inspector shall be responsible for the implementation of the Quality
Procedure for this particular job. His responsibilities include but are not limited to
the following:

Safety Supervisor

To ensure surface cleanliness and check profile prior to coating application


(primer / topcoat)
Monitor and check Wet film requirements as per standard
Supervise coating for any paint defects for touch up repair
To inspect and prepare the reports according to standards and client
specification
Carrying out inspection for all paint shop painting activities
Monitors daily activities, checks and assures that FBE coated pipe is 100%
Holiday Tested and damaged areas are repaired & re-tested prior to
lowering as per applicable standards and specifications
Initiates RFI after verification for the required inspection
Notifies the Construction Supervisor and QA/QC Manager on any corrective
action that has to be taken.
Coordinates with required personnel for the required testing on this work.
Responsible for the preparation and submittal of all the QC
documentation.
Assures good quality and safe workmanship as specified by Saudi Aramco
Specifications and Standards.

Checks and ensures compliance of all personnel and activities to the


safety requirements such as the use of PPE. Performing of the Site Safety
instruction like toolbox talks.
Coordinate with the supervisors to ensure that the work is carried out in a
safe manner.
