At the Yokohama YMCA, Department of Japanese Language Studies, you will


aim to master thorough Japanese language by training all-round Japanese
ability which consists of the following four skills; listening, speaking,
reading, and writing. It is perfect for those of you who wish to pursue
further studies (technical schools, universities, graduate schools) or work in
Japan.

This course is aimed for training Japanese language of advanced level.
You will be able to master practical Japanese communication skills that will help you secure
employment, pursue further studies, and deal with various scenes in your social life.
*Students that complete the Regular Japanese Course will be allowed to take an additional
Japanese and Culture Studying Course (1 year). The studying period will be two years in total.
*The school will issue graduation certificates for students who enrolled for certain period, and met
the required attendance percentage and grades.
Maximum Enrollment 120 Students
Regular Japanese Course: 80 students, Japanese and Culture Studying Course: 40 students
*Each class will be around 15 students.

Application Requirements
The applicant must have completed 12 years of formal education or have the entrance
qualifications for higher education such as universities in their home country,
The applicants must have a Japanese language ability equivalent to the Japanese
Language Proficiency Test N5 (about 150 hours of Japanese language).
The applicant for the Japanese and Culture Studying Course must have a Japanese
language ability equivalent to N2 level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test.
The applicant must have a contact person residing in Japan.
Level & Curriculum:
Proceed to Graduate Schools, Universities, or Special Colleges.
Find job or reside permanently in Japan. Return to home country.

Visa Type College Student Visa (Ryuugaku Visa). One year and three months.
*If the student is taking an additional Japanese and Culture Studying Course after completing
the Regular Japanese Course, the school will apply for extension of period of stay of his/her Visa
for another 1 year.

Application Procedure
Submit application
Have your contact person in Japan submit the application documents and application fee
(20,000 Yen) directly to the Japanese Language Department front desk. The YMCA does not
accept applications by mail. Please make an appointment before you bring your application
to the YMCA (closed on Sundays and holidays). Inquire about our schedule for Saturdays.
Once paid, the application fee will not be refunded for any reason.

Screening, Application for Certificate of Eligibility


Once your application has been examined and you have been accepted, the YMCA will
submit an application for Certificate of Eligibility to the Yokohama District Immigration
Office, Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau. If necessary, tests (interview and a written
test) will be administered in your home country.

Also, an interview with your contact

person may be required.


Procedures by the Immigration Office, Issuance of Visa
The school will inform the contact person on the result of the application for Certificate of
Eligibility. Once the Certificate of Eligibility has been issued from the Yokohama District
Immigration Office, Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau, the school will hand it over after
the tuition has been paid. You are required to take this document to the Japanese Embassy
or Consulate in your country upon which you will be able to receive your visa.

Once the tuition has been paid, it can not be refunded for any reason except in the event that
the students visa application is denied by the Immigration Office.
Contact Person in Japan
A contact person living in Japan is required when applying to the YMCA. On top of preparing
and turning in the students application materials, the contact person will be asked to help and
support the students life in Japan once he/she arrives. The contact person may also be asked to
assist the student with their studies in cooperation with the school.
The students specified contact person must meet the following requirements: Any nationality
is accepted.
The contact person must be a relative, friend, or acquaintance of the student, and must
know the student and his/her family very well.
The contact person must be well settled in Japan, and must have a firm understanding of
the Japanese language, laws, culture, and customs.

Financial Sponsor
Financial sponsor is a person who will be responsible for providing all the required funds
while the student is studying at the YMCA.
The financial sponsor must meet the following requirements:
In the case the financial sponsor is the student him/herself.
He/she must have an employment history for certain period of time.
He/she must be able to show proof that he/she is able to provide all required funds for the
duration of his/her studies.
B In the case the financial sponsor is living in the students home country:
He/she must basically be a close relative of the student (parent, sibling, grandparent,
etc.).
He/she must be able to show proof that he/she is able to provide all required funds for the
duration of the students studies in Japan.
C In the case the financial sponsor is living in Japan:
If he/she is a Japanese, he/she must have a close relation to the student or a sound reason
for supporting the student.
If he/she is foreigner, he/she must basically be a close relative of the student (parent,
sibling, grandparent, etc.)
He/she must be able to provide proof that he/she is capable of meeting all required
funding for the duration of the students studies in Japan.
Others:

-Student Dormitory

The YMCA currently does not have a student dormitory. However, if a student
requires housing, the YMCA can introduce an affiliated dormitory, a private
apartment, or a student house. Students that require assistance with this matter
should have his/her contact person contact the YMCA about it.
The YMCA students are qualified to lodge at the Yokohama International Student
House, the Kanagawa International Student House, or the Kanagawa Prefectural
International Training Center.

-Scholarships

The students with student VISA that have been studying at the YMCA for more than
6 months after enrollment and have excellent records (study and attendance) will
have the opportunity to be granted the following scholarships.
Scholarship of the Yokohama YMCA College Department of Japanese
Language.(10,000 per month, for 6 months, about 2 students)
Scholarship for A Foreign Student Studying at His/Her Own Expense offered by
the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO), (48,000 per month for 1 year
or 6 months, about 2 students.)
Scholarship offered by Kyoritsu International Foundation, (60,000 per month
for 1 year , one person or less.)

-National Health Insurance

Every student with student VISA must join the National Health Insurance. The
student will pay the premium about 1,000 to 2,000 per month. With the aid from
this insurance system, you will only be required to pay 30% of medical bills at
hospitals and pharmacies.

-Student Commutation Tickets

Students have the right to purchase student commutation tickets. Also, the school can
issue student discount certificates for transportation.

-Student Insurance System

This system compensates for injuries or deaths that occur during school activities;
including the expense of medical treatment. The school will pay the premium.

-Health Examination

Occurs once a year in which the YMCA will pay the expenses.

-Volunteer Tutoring System

If you wish, a Japanese volunteer will help you with your conversational practices
after school.

-Using Affiliated Facilities


There are a swimming pool, a training room, and a running track at the Yokohama
YMCA (Kannai). Students of our Japanese course may use these facilities free of
charge.

Universities: Kaetsu University, Hosei University, Meiji Gakuin University, Toyo Eiwa
University, Chuo University, Nihon University, Keisen University.
Vocational Schools: Tokyo Mode Gakuen, Yokohama System Engineering, Nihon
Kenko Iryo Institue, Chuo Computer and Communication College, Arts College
Yokohama, Sogo Denshi Computer College, Tokyo Seishin Technical College for
Cooking School.

Level 1: 4 successful candidates out of 6 examinees
Level 2: 17 successful candidates out of 25 examinees
The Second JLPT
Level 1: 6 successful candidates out of 19 examinees
Level 2: 8 successful candidates out of 20 examinees
- Introduction from the YMCA Graduates
If the applicant is introduced from our graduate, the applicant is exempted from

the selection fee. We will pay 20,000 yen to the graduate as an honorarium when the
new student enters the school. Please contact us for detail information when you turn
in your application documents.

About Application Documents


Please read the following notes carefully before filling out the necessary application forms using
the samples as a guide.
About the official documents made in foreign countries, the written date must be within 6
months of the date you submit to the immigration bureau. About the official documents
made in Japan, the written date must be within 3 months of the date you submit to the
immigration bureau.
Fill in the forms with a black/blue pen or ball-point pen. You may download the application
documents listed below with mark from our Website and fill them in with computers

If you make any mistakes while filling in the forms, draw two lines across the mistake/s and
correct it/them. Do not use white-out (correction fluid).
For materials listed below with mark, enclose a Japanese translation for all non-Japanese
(except English) documents, and indicate the translators full name and affiliation (such as
relationship with the applicant).

Please make all photocopies in A4 size with clear printing.


Please note that the name of the institution, address, telephone number, name of the person
that issued the certificate, and the date of issue must be indispensable on the documents
issued by the official institution.
You may be required to provide other documents other than the ones listed below.

The materials required from the applicant


Application Form (printed form provided by the YMCA)
The form must be filled out by the applicant in Japanese, Chinese, or English.
Please be sure to write down the date and your signature.
Photo of the applicantsize 4cm3cm 6 Copies
Photos must be taken within 6 months.
Write your name and the date of birth on the back of each copy.
Attach one photo to the application form.
Original document of Diploma or a Certificate of Graduation from the Last School Attended

The original document of diploma will be returned to you after being inspected by the
immigration office.
Statement of Purpose (printed form provided by the YMCA)

The applicant should explain the specific reasons why he/she wishes to study in Japan, and what
he/she plans to do after graduating from the YMCA Japanese School.
A Photocopy of the Applicants Passport

Please include the page with your photo and all the other pages with records entering Japan.

Certificate of Enrollment or Certificate of Employment

If you are currently a student, you must show the certificate of enrollment.

If you are currently

employed, please provide a certificate to prove your current employment.


Proof of Japanese Language Study
Please submit;
1) A copy of the official results of the Japanese Proficiency Test or the J.TEST
(http://www.j-test.com/), or a copy of the result of any official Japanese language test.
2) Certificates issued by language schools or other similar organizations previously attended
(stating the period of study, hours in total, grades, attendance rate, and text books).

A If the financial sponsor is the applicant:

The bank account must be under the name of the applicant, and the amount must be sufficient for
the applicant to live and study in Japan.

Application Review
The YMCA will review the applicants application materials, interview with
the contact person, and the results of local testing (written and interview), and
determine whether or not to allow admission.

Notification of Acceptance
Accepted students will receive a notification of acceptance. Students that
are not accepted will have their application materials returned to them.

The YMCA will submit a request to the immigration office for a Certificate
of Eligibility, which is required when applying for a student Visa
