CHAPTER 1

1.1 INTRODUCTION
Organizational behavior is the study of both group and individual performance and activity
within an organization. Internal and external perspectives are two theories of how
organizational behavior can be viewed by companies.
The study of the way people interact within groups. Normally this study is applied in an
attempt to create more efficient business organizations. The central idea of the study of
organizational behavior is that a scientific approach can be applied to the management of
workers. Organizational behavior theories are used for human resource purposes to maximize
the output from individual group members.
There are a variety of different models and philosophies of organizational behavior. Areas of
research include improving job performance, increasing job satisfaction, promoting
innovation and encouraging leadership. In order to achieve the desired results, managers may
adopt different tactics, including reorganizing groups, modifying compensation structures and
changing the way performance is evaluated.
OB is nothing more than developing our understanding and development of people skill. A
multidisciplinary field devoted to understanding individual and group behavior, interpersonal
processes, and organizational dynamics.
OB is Study of human behavior in organizations. There are two words1-

Organization

2-

Behaviour

An organization is a collection of people working together in a division of labor to achieve a

common purpose.
The study of Organizational Behaviour (OB) is very interesting and challenging too. It is
related to individuals, group of people working together in teams. The study of organizational
behaviour relates to the expected behaviour of an individual in the organization. No two
individuals are likely to behave in the same manner in a particular work situation. It is the
predictability of a manager about the expected behaviour of an individual.
1

OB is concerned with the study of what people do in an organization (social system) and how
that behavior affects the performance of the organization

Individual Behavior

Individual and group behavior

Organizational structure

Organizational Behavior
Why do people behave a certain way in an organizational environment? What factors affect
job performance, employee interaction, job commitment, leadership and managerial styles?
Individuals have studied this very topic for decades in order to find ways of increasing
organizational performance. Organizational behavior is the study of both group and
individual performance and activity within an organization.
This area of study examines human behavior in a work environment and determines its
impact on job structure, performance, communication, motivation, leadership, etc. Internal
and external perspectives are two theories of how organizational behavior can be viewed by
companies. Let's take a look at how the perspectives are different through examining
Integreon, Inc.
During the last 20 years, there have been additional developments in OB research and
practice:

Anthropology has become increasingly influential, and led to the idea that one can
understand firms as communities, by introducing concepts such as organizational culture,
organizational rituals, and symbolic acts.

Leadership studies became part of OB.

OB researchers have shown increased interest in ethics and its importance in an

organization.

OB researchers have become interested in the aesthetic sphere of

organizations, drawing on theories and methods from the humanities, including theater,
literature, music, and art.
2

DEFINITIONS
According to Luthans
OB is directly concerned with the understanding, predicting and controlling of human
behavior in organizations.
According to LM Prasad
The study and application of knowledge about human behaviour related to other elements of
an organization such as structure, technology and social systems
Stephen P Robins
Organizational behaviour as a systematic study of the actions and attitudes that people exhibit
within organizations.
Roman J. Alday
O.B as a branch of the social science that seeks to build theories that can be applied to
predicting understanding and controlling behavior in work organizations
Organizational behaviour is a field of study that investigates the impact that individuals,
groups and organizational structure have on behaviour within the organization, for the
purpose of applying such knowledge towards improving an organizational effectiveness.
Chester Barnard
He recognized that individuals behave differently when acting in their organizational role
than when acting separately from the organization.
OB researchers study the behavior of individuals primarily in their organizational roles. One
of the main goals of organizational theorists in OB is "to revitalize organizational theory and
develop a better conceptualization of organizational life"

NATURE OF ORAGANIZTIONAL BEHAVIOUR

1) A separate field of study and not a discipline only
It has assumed the status of a distinct field of study. It is a part of general management. It
represents behavioral approach to management.
2) An inter-disciplinary approach
The OB is heavily influenced by several other behavioral sciences and social sciences like
psychology, Sociology and anthropology. O.B. has psychological foundations. The concept
like learning, perception, attitude, motivation etc is borrowed from psychology, sociology and
anthropology.
3) A Normative Science
Organizational behaviour is a normative science. A normative science prescribes how the
various findings of researches can be applied to get organizational results, which are
acceptable to the society. Thus, what is acceptable by the society or individuals engaged in an
organization is a matter of values of the society and people concerned.
4) A Science and Art
Organization behavior is both art and science. It is considered as art because it contains
knowledge about behavior of individuals. It is considered as science because it involves
application of science.
5) Humanistic and Optimistic Approach
Organizational behaviour focuses the attention on people from humanistic point of view. It is
based on the belief that needs and motivation of people are of high' concern. Further, there is
optimism about the innate potential of man to be independent, creative, predictive and
capable of contributing positively to the objectives of the organization.
6) Oriented towards Organizational Objectives

7) A Total System Approach

1.3 LIMITATIONS OF THE RESEARCH

It is simple to assume that every work will proceed without any hurdles. But as usual there
were many hurdles and bottlenecks faced during the working on this project. The main
limitations were as follows:

The limitation in this survey was that I could not conduct a survey on a big scale, due to
the time constraint.

Lack of co-operative attitude from companies.

Unavailability of the resource persons.

Ease of access to important and relevant data.

The main limitation of the study is the collection of information. Because most of the
information are confidential. So they dont want to disclose them. And I am not able to
show any forms which they use in the time of joining or we use to upgrade the files.

Taking appointment of the respondents became a little difficulty.

1.4 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Type of research:
I have carried out a research which is both qualitative and quantitative in its support. The
qualitative approach applies to both, descriptive and inductive forms of research. While as in
case of quantitative approach, an extensive use has been made of the literature available to
carry out a detail research on the nature of the problem. I have chosen Nestle as the target
company for my research study.

Method of data collection & analysis:

The data, after collection, has to be processed and analyzed in accordance with the outline
laid down for the purpose at the time of developing the research plan. This is essential for a
scientific study and for ensuring that we have all relevant data for making contemplated
comparisons and analysis.

I have conducted a graphical analysis based on the responses received from the persons
questioned and interviewed. Once the interview was over, the responses received were be
grouped together, and a graphical presentation and analysis has been made for every set of
questions.

Nature of data:
I have made use of both, the primary sources and the secondary sources of data in eliciting
information.

Primary data are collected from:

interview

questionnaire

Secondary data are collected from:

internet,

books,

journal

articles

PRIMARY DATA:
Data that has been collected from first-hand-experience is known as primary data. Primary
data has not been published yet and is more reliable, authentic and objective. Primary data
has not been changed or altered by human beings, therefore its validity is greater than
secondary data.

The primary source of data involves oral interviews and questionnaires. These sources are
inadvertently expected to yield more qualitative data and results.
SAMPLE SIZE: 10
SURVEY AREA: Mumbai

Primary data collection methods:

Interviews:

I have conducted oral interviews with retailers of Nestle. In considering an oral interview of
such a nature, a follow up and step by step approach was adopted in getting through the
interviewees.
The oral interview involved a set of well thought out questions that were asked and the
responses there on noted as a basis for analysis. Subsequently a graphical analysis has been
made based on the responses received from the persons questioned and interviewed.

Questionnaire:
I have collected primary data with the help of the questionnaire which was conducted with
the help of students, retailer, consumer.

SECONDARY DATA:
Data collected from a source that has already been published in any form is called as
secondary data. The review of literature in nay research is based on secondary data. Mostly
from books, journals and periodicals.

Secondary data collection method:

The secondary source of data includes relevant literature including periodicals and journal
articles in the areas of Marketing, customer satisfaction.

I have collected the secondary data from the sites or links like;

MODERN APPROACH TO ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOUR

Human Resources Approach

The human resources approach is concerned with the growth and development of people
towards higher levels of competency, creativity and fulfillment, because people are the
central resource in any organization. This approach help employees become better in terms of
work and responsibility and then it tries to create a climate in which they can contribute to the
best of their improved abilities. This approach is also known as 'supportive approach' because
the manager's primary role changes from control of employees to providing an active support
for their growth and performance.

Contingency Approach

A contingency approach to organizational behaviour implies that different situations require

different behavioral practices for effectiveness instead of following a traditional approach for
all situations. Each situation must be analyzed carefully to determine the significant variables
that exist in order to establish the more effective practices. The strength of this approach is
that it encourages analysis of each situation prior to action. Thus, it helps to use all the current
knowledge about people in the organization in the most appropriate manner.

20

Productivity Approach

Productivity is a ratio that compares units of output with units of input. It is often measured in
terms of economic inputs and outputs. Productivity is considered to be improved, if more
outputs can be produced from the same amount of inputs. But besides economic inputs and
outputs, human and social inputs and outputs also arc important.

Systems Approach

A system is an interrelated part of an organization or a society that interacts with everyone

related to that organization or society and functions as a whole. Within the organization
'people' employ 'technology' in performing the 'task' that they are responsible for, while the
'structure' of the organization serves as a basis for co-ordinating all their different activities.
The systems view emphasizes the interdependence of each of these elements within the
organization, if the organization as a whole is to function effectively.
The other key aspect of the systems view of organization is its emphasis on the interaction
between the organization and its broader environment,, which consists of social, economic,
cultural and political environment within which they operate.
Organizations arc dependent upon their surrounding environment in two main ways:
First, the organization requires 'inputs' from the environment in the form of raw material,
people, money, ideas and so on. The organization itself can be thought of as performing
certain 'transformation' processes, on its inputs in order to create outputs in the form of
products or services.
Secondly, the organization depends on environment such as, public to accept its output. The
systems view of organization thus emphasizes on the key interdependencies that
organizations must manage.
Within themselves the organizations must trade off the interdependencies among people,
tasks, technology and structure in order to perform their transformation processes effectively
and efficiently. Organizations must also recognize their interdependence with the broader
environments within which they exist.

PROJECT EDU-LYNC (MUMBAI)

September 2014 | Rotary Sanskardham Academy provides an education for hearing-impaired
and speech-impaired students from kindergarten to the 10th grade. The school operates on
meager amounts of government support and the limited funds it brings in from selling crafts
made by its students, making it difficult to offer broader professional training.
To help, our CEO, Bob Gogel, conceived Project Edu-Lync. Bob saw an opportunity for
Integreon Associates to bring virtual teaching sessions to the school by using Microsoft Lync,
the same video conferencing system we employ in our day-to-day business. At no cost,
Integreon installed the equipment and coordinated with teaching staff over the curriculum. In
September 2013, as part of our World Literacy Week, Bob and an in-class interpreter
delivered the first lesson - "The Importance of Education".
Following the success of this pilot, Integreon invited Associates from around the globe to
share their professional skills and sign up as virtual teachers. A broad program of lessons is
planned for 2014 and will include bookkeeping and finance, economics, organization of
commerce, secretarial practice, and computers and IT, as well as more vocational subjects
such as animation, jewelry design, personality development, corporate grooming and graphic
designing.
A spokesperson for the school said This project has benefitted us by giving us a few extra
hands when earlier there were none. We found it hard to impart quality education with our
limited resources and faculty earlier, now we work with Integreon to achieve this goal.

TREE PLANTING (MANILA)

May 2014 | For our week-long celebration of World Environment Day, 45 Associates
participated in a tree planting event in San Mateo, Rizal, Philippines in May 2014. The
location is a 73-hectacre closed landfill rehabilitation area, which is part of the National
Greening Program of the Philippines Department of Environment and Natural Resources
(DENR). In coordination with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, we planted
about 300 saplings. Although our initial target was 1000, DENR requested we limit our
efforts to 300, the most they could sustain over a hot, dry summer.
ADOPT AND NAME A PENGUIN (JOHANNESBURG)
April 2014 | On April 22, the Johannesburg office celebrated Earth Day by adopting an
African Penguin, in cooperation with SANCCOBs Adopt a Penguin Program. SANCCOB,
the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds, uses the program to
encourage support for endangered African penguins.

With adoption papers in hand, the SMILE South Africa Team, in cooperation with the Global
Steering Committee, launched a contest to name the penguin. The prize was a special penguin
T-shirt from SANCCOB.
The winner of our week-long contest bested more than 120 entries with Integwen. Wed
also like to congratulate the two runners-up, Intenguin and Integuin.

March 2014 | Seven of our Associates led a drive to donate clothes to poor and remote areas
in China. By March 16, they had collected more than 51 kg of clothes, bags, shoes and quilts.
Working with a local intermediary, we sent the clothes to the town of Ge Er Mu, in Qinghai
Province.
PENS OF HOPE IN DAVAO (LONDON & BRISTOL)
31

June 2014 | On Sunday, June 1, countries around the world observed International Childrens
Day. In honor of this special day, Integreon celebrated with a week of activities that started
Tuesday, May 27.

One of these activities was a collection drive for Pens of Hope in Davao, an outreach
program to address the scarcity of writing materials in the Philippines. Most of us take having
these things in our homes and schools for granted, but there are many schools in the world
who struggle to fund such items and children have to learn without them.
In London, our Associates purchased 1,837 items of stationery for donation and, in Bristol,
Associates donated 400 items. These items consisted of writing pens and pencils, coloring
pens and pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, rulers, notepads and coloring books. Our
donations were given to the community in the province of Agusan del Norte.
Pens of Hope in Davao expressed their gratitude through their blog. Please follow the link
below to see their BlogSpot, which features pictures of our donations reaching children in the

4.2 SUGGESTION
1. Manpower requirement for each department in the company is identified well in advance.
2. Perfect manpower consultants should avoid dealing with low profile requirements (like
recruiting office assistants, front office executives or were the salary package is less than Rs
8000). Because time and energy (work force) used to fulfil the low profile requirement can be
used in a better else were to generate more revenues.
3. Though consultancy has already owned a good reputation, but it always need some type of
publicity as a reminder to the young stars approaching to the jobs. This might help in
accumulating good data base.
4. Every department employee should aware about the current recruitment process.
5. Integreon, Inc. should give to advertisement for current job vacancy. Then the outsourcing
or fresher can know about the job vacancies at Integreon, Inc.
