THERMICULITE
Thermiculite is
innovative, versatile and
complete gasket material,
making it the industrys
leading sealing solution.
Innovative.
Cutting-edge material technology
Ever since inventing the spiral wound
gasket in 1912, Flexitallic has been at the
forefront of fluid sealing innovation.
In 1998, Flexitallic set new standards
for sealing technology with the introduction
of Thermiculite Critical Service Series
gasket material available in Tanged Sheet
and later in Spiral Wound Filler and
Flexpro (kammprofile) Facing styles.
Exclusive to Flexitallic, this revolutionary
material, which comprises of chemically and
thermally exfoliated Vermiculite*, simulated
the structure of exfoliated graphite, with
one notable exception it maintains
integrity through a wide range of extreme
temperatures.

NOTES: *It is essential that Style R gaskets are fitted with a compression stop. Without a correctly dimensioned stop the gasket can easily be over-compressed resulting in failure.
To provide a compression stop the depth of the tongue, groove or recess should be controlled to provide optimum compressed gasket thickness with metal to metal contact on the
flange faces.

IDENTIFICATION
Gaskets are colour coded to help expedite the selection and identity of the gaskets you need.
The colour on the outside edge of the centering ring identifies both the winding and filler materials.
The metallic winding material is designated by a solid colour. The filler materials are designated by
colour stripes at equal intervals on the outside edge of the centering ring. Flexitallic colour coding
meets the industry standard for metal and filler materials listed in ASME B16.20.
Metallic Winding

Cycling Comparison
During operation, unloading of a
bolted-gasketed joint can occur due to
pressurisation, fluctuation in pressure and
temperature, thermal effects, joint relaxation,
etc. PVRC test data confirms the superior
ability of the FLEXPRO gasket to maintain
tightness under these cyclic loading
conditions. As shown in the graph, when
gasket stress is reduced from 8000 psi to
4400 psi, the FLEXPRO gasket leaks 100
times less than a comparable corrugated
metal graphite gasket. A tighter joint is
a safer joint!
T3 Tightness
The PVRC developed method for characterising
gasket performance specifies three classes of
tightness. T1 (economy), T2 (standard), and T3
(tight). A tightness class of T3 represents a mass
leak rate per unit diameter, of 0.00002 mg/sec-mm.
This graph shows that the Flexitallic FLEXPRO
gasket achieves a tightness class of T3 at the
lowest seating stress when compared to other
types of gaskets. Results are based on PVRC test
data, using a gasket with dimensions of 20 x 211/2 diameter, with (20) 1 diameter bolts, and
an assembly efficiency of 0.075. The Flexitallic
FLEXPRO gasket is ideal for use in applications
with limited bolt load and lighter weight flanges.

Materials
The gasket material should be selected
to suit the service conditions. It is always
recommended that the gasket material be
softer than the mating flanges. The more
popular Ring Type Joint materials, with the
recommended maximum hardness and
identification as specified in API 6A, are
shown in the table below.
For more highly specialised applications, Ring
Type Joints can be machined from DUPLEX
steels and other exotic materials such as
Monel, Inconel, Incoloy, and Hastelloy.
The Technical Department is available to
advise on other materials.
Protective coating
In accordance with API Specifications, soft
iron and low carbon steel Ring Type Joints
are protected with electroplated zinc to a
maximum thickness of 8m. Alternative
material coatings can be supplied on request.

RING TYPE
JOINTS
Style R.
The Ring Type Joint was initially developed
for high pressure/temperature applications
found in the petroleum industry and is
primarily used in the oil field on drilling and
completion equipment. However, today this
product range can also be found on valves
and pipework assemblies, along with some
high integrity pressure vessel joints.
Standard Style R Ring Type Joints
are manufactured in accordance with both
API 6A and 17D. Available in both oval and
octagonal configurations, both types are
interchangeable on the modern octagonal
type grooved flanges.
As with all solid metal Ring Type Joints
including Style R, it is recommended to
replace the ring when flange connection is
broken.

Style RX.
The Style RX is an adaptation of the
standard Style R which energizes on
assembly. The RX is designed to fit the same
groove design as a standard Style R, making
the joints interchangeable.
Consideration should be given to the
difference in finished make-up distance.
The modified design uses an energizing on
assembly effect which improves the
efficiency of the seal.
Designs are also available for Subsea
applications.

Weld Rings.
Weld Rings
Another gasket concept, with origins from
the German industrial market, is welded
gaskets. As standard, two variants exist,
Welded Membrane gaskets in accordance
with DIN 2695 and Weld Ring gaskets.
Welded Membrane Gaskets
The Welded Membrane gasket consists
of two similar rings each of 0.157 inch
thickness. For chemical compatibility
and in order to ensure controlled thermal
conductivity and weld compatibility, the
gasket material must always be the
same as the flange material. Each ring
is individually welded to its mating flange
and upon flange assembly, a second
welding operation ensures the joining
of the rings on their outer diameter, thus
providing a fully welded joint.

By applying higher loads on the gasket
the contact area between the Lens Ring
and the flange increases. This prevents
the gasket from being overstressed.

Service
The SIGMA 500 facing and spacer ring
material is specifically designed for flanges
where only low bolt loading is available. Such
flanges can be glass lined, ceramic, plastic or
so distorted that they provide areas of low
gasket stress only.
Maximum Flange pressure class:
2500 lb Class
The SIGMA 500 material is suitable for
sealing all chemicals across the whole Ph range
(0-14) with the exception of molten Alkali
metals, Fluorine gas or Hydrogen Fluoride.
The metallic core of the Insulating Gasket
and Insulating Washers is selected to
suit the application. If required, NACE
compliance metals can be supplied.
The Insulating Gasket and Washers have been
designed and developed for use in pipelines
that require cathodic protection. This special
design exceeds the requirements of Saudi
Aramco Std. 02-SAMSS-010.

Reducing risk
FRG products have been designed and
developed for ease of installation, even
in sub-sea and high temperature
environments. Creating a new industry
standard in the care of flanges and joints,
the FRG range reduces the potential for
loss of containment due to corrosion or
during maintenance activities. The unique
sealing materials developed by Flexitallic
conform to even damaged flange faces
when sealed, reducing the occurance of
further incidents. This innovative range can
also be used on new equipment to prolong
the longevity of the asset.

SHEET JOINTING
TECHNICAL
INFORMATION
Novus Compressed
Fibre Sheet Jointing.
Options
Anti -Stick
Novus materials are available with an
anti-stick finish. The coating is specially
formulated to be environmentally safe
without compromising gasket removal from
the flange. Anti-stick finish is available as
standard on our premium grades Novus 10,
Novus 34 and Novus 49 (Graftec).
Wire Reinforced
Novus materials are available with wire
reinforcement for applications requiring
high compressive strength or where thermal
cycling is severe. Carbon Steel wire is the
standard reinforcement.
Eyelets
Cut gaskets manufactured from Novus
material are available with eyelets. The
eyelet is fitted on the inner diameter of
the gasket and prevents fluid contamination
as well as aiding sealability. The standard
material for the eyelet is 316L stainless steel
but other materials are available on request.
PTFE Envelopes
Cut gaskets fitted with PTFE envelopes
offer excellent chemical resistance under
moderate service conditions, allowing the
use of Novus materials in fluids which
would normally be unsuitable.
Availability
For large volume one size gaskets we can
also supply the materials in coils, increasing
material yield and reducing production time.
Contact our Technical Team for details.
Private Branding
Our materials can be supplied in private
brand and colour formats to ensure your
company or customer is accorded
recognition. Contact our Technical Team
for details.
Standard Sheet Sizes
Novus sheet materials are available in
standard and non-standard sheet sizes.
Standard sheet sizes are available as

NOTES
(1) Relates to cast iron flanges only.
(4) This gasket is used also for flanges having 4 bolt holes.
89.
INSTALLATION
PROCEDURES
In order to ensure the
optimum service life of
metallic gasket materials,
and sheet products, it is not
only important to choose
the correct material for the
application but to install
and maintain it correctly.
These guidelines are
designed to assist the
end user in the assembly
of gasket materials.
90.
Bolting
Ensure the bolt and nut threads are clean.
Apply bolt lubrication to the bolt and nut
threads and to the face of the nut to be
tightened. Do not apply grease or bolt
lubricant to the joint face. After cleaning
and lubrication it should be possible to run
the nut along the full length of the bolt by
hand. If this is not possible the bolts and
nuts should be refurbished or replaced

INSTALLATION
PROCEDURES
Bolting
Ensure the bolt and nut threads are
clean. Apply bolt lubrication to the bolt
and nut threads and to the face of the
nut to be tightened. Do not apply grease
or bolt lubricant to the joint face. After
cleaning and lubrication it should be
possible to run the nut along the full
length of the bolt by hand. If this is not
possible the bolts and nuts should be
refurbished or replaced.
Scrape, wire brush or file as necessary
the back face of each flange where the
bolt heads and nuts are to sit, ensuring
that the surfaces are clean and flat.
If possible use hardened flat washers
to ensure even transfer of the load.
Gasket Storage
We recommend the following conditions
for the storage of sheet gasket materials:
Room Temperature (Below 25OC)
Away from sources of UV light
(No natural light)
Dry (Humidity levels <60%)
Store Flat
Storing the gasket under the above
conditions will ensure a shelf life of
at least 5 years.
For graphite laminate and Uniflon grades
there is no requirement to avoid UltraViolet light and the storage temperature
is less important. All other conditions
apply.
Installation
Ensure that the gasket is installed
centrally.
It is recommended that the bolts are
tightened using a controlled method such
as torque or tension. If using a torque
wrench, ensure that it is accurately
calibrated.
Tighten bolts in a star-like crossing
pattern in the following sequence:
- Finger tighten nuts
- Tighten to 30% of the final load
- Tighten to 60% of the final load
- Tighten to full load
Make a final tightening sequence,
working around the flange, tightening
each bolt in turn until the specified
torque is achieved.
After Installation
Check that the flange faces are parallel
using a suitable tool e.g. the Flange Gap
Tool.

Bolting
Ensure that the correct bolting material is utilised
to suit the operating conditions, taking into
account the limitation of low yield strength bolts.
Ensure that the use of bolt lubrication is employed.
For torque tightening methods Flexitallic
recommends the use of molybdenum disulphide
bolt lubrication or similar nickel based compound.
Do not apply any lubricants when using PTFE coated
fasteners. Consult with the coating manufacturers for
product specific friction coefficients.
Tightening Procedures
Controlled tightening procedures should be used
when installing Spiral Wound Gaskets. Flexitallic
recommends that the use of hydraulic tensioning
equipment be considered where possible for bolt
diameters 1-1/4" and above. Please refer to
Flexitallic's Design Criteria for further technical
information.

GENERAL NOTES
Dimensions in inches and mm.
Figures stated are for information only. Please refer to the current version of the original standards for dimensional information.
NOTES
Torque Values are in Nm, and assume Alloy Steel Bolts (A193 B7 w/ 2H Nuts) with oil/lubrication.
(Nut factors used on these charts are within .15 to .19).
Flexitallic does not generally recommend a bolt stress above 60,000PSI.
Torque Values limit minimum and mazimum gasket seating stresses based upon pressure class and certain operating conditions. (Ie Maximum pressure ratings for
given pressure class, not hydrotest pressure), Extreme operating conditions such as high temperature may reduce bolt yield strength. Caution should be used in these
applications. The above torque values are for general use only. For critical or extreme applications (high temperature/pressure) consult with Flexitallic Engineering.

GENERAL NOTES
Flange Diameter and Bolt Diameter dimensions are in inches. Figures stated are for information only. Please refer to the current version of the original
standards for dimensional information.
NOTES
1. Regular facing for class 150 and 300 steel flanged fittings and companion flange standards is a 1/16 (0.0625mm) raised face included in the minimum
flange thickness dimensions. A 1/16 (0.0625mm) raised face may be supplied also on the class 400, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500 flange standards, but it
must be added to the minimum flange thickness.
2. Regular facing for class 400, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500 flange thickness dimensions.
3. Tolerance of plus or minus 0.016 in. (1/64) is allowed on the inside and outside diameters of all facings.
4. For small male and female joints care should be taken in the use of these dimensions to insure that pipe used is thick enough to permit sufficient
bearing surface to prevent the crushing of the gasket. The dimensions apply particularly on lines where the joint is made on the end of the pipe.
Screwed companion flanges for small male and female joints are furnished with plain face and are threaded with American Standard Locknut Thread.
5. Gaskets for male-female and tongue-groove joints shall cover the bottom of the recess with minimum clearances taking into account the tolerances
prescribed in Note 3.
