Boys swim team

gets its revenge
with title win

Quakers take down Mainland

By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun

BRIGIT BAUMA/The Sun

Moorestown High School varsity boys basketball player Colin Francisco jumps for a shot at the basket during a tournament game against Mainland Regional High School on March 3. The Quakers destroyed Mainland, 44-17.

In their freshman year, the seniors of the Moorestown High

School boys swim team went
against Scotch Plains-Fanwood
and was knocked out of the state
championship.
Now, in a twist of fate, four
years later, once again, the team
was against Scotch Plains-Fanwood for the title.
However, things ended a little
differently this time around.
The Moorestown boys swim
team defeated Scotch Plains-Fanwood on Monday, Feb. 23 for the
Public B State Team Championship. This is the team's second
consecutive state championship,
the fifth year winning the
Burlington County Swim League,
the fourth year winning the section title and the 35th consecutive
dual-meet victory.
Its almost like it was meant to
be. Out of all of the teams in New
Jersey, we go up against them
again in the finals. It makes it
extra special going up against
them and winning, boys swim

team head coach Jeff DeNick

said.
DeNick has been coaching the
Moorestown boys swim team for
six years, but has been a swim
coach 14 years. Compared to previous years, DeNick said the
school was a favorite to win this
year and it was a totally different
feeling. Before, it was always the
team chasing other top dogs in
the sport, but this year everyone
else was trying to beat them. According to DeNick, it was almost
a relief to win.
In the end, I was happy, but
also relieved we were able to meet
expectations. It was a great feeling, but different, DeNick said.
The teams strategy had to
change a little bit for this year.
Last year, there were only three
seniors on the team. This year,
there were 16 and it had a strong
freshman class coming in as well.
It focused a lot, not just on coming
in first place, but picking up other
places as well to make a more balanced team and gain more points.

Do you know someone who is

in need of assistance so he or she
can live comfortably at home?
Perhaps you have an elderly
neighbor, someone temporarily
or permanently disabled, or a veteran returned from service who
could use a ride to the doctor,
someone to run errands or just
someone to visit them.
Or perhaps you yourself would
like to help those in need and volunteer your time doing those
things for others.
In Moorestown, there is an organization that provides both of
these services and opportunities.
It Takes a Village New Jersey,
located in Moorestown, is a nonprofit, volunteer organization

that helps those within the community who need assistance, free
of charge.
The volunteers have wonderful hearts, Irv and Trudi Herman, founders of ITAVNJ, said.
The organization was started
in April 2011 with a group of
Moorestown neighbors. ITAVNJ,
part of the Village to Village Network, started with just $600 and a
dream to help those in need.
Since then, the organization has
expanded and held fundraisers
that allowed it to add adjacent
areas to ITAVNJ, such as Cinnaminson, Delran, Hainesport,
Maple Shade and Mount Laurel.
In 2014, there were only 45 villages in the United States; now
there are 154 villages with about
100 starting up this year. The hope
one day is there will be Villages

all over New Jersey.

The mission of ITAVNJ is to
help elderly and disabled neighbors of any age, and returning
veterans, remain safely and independently in their own homes by
providing free support services.
Services include going out for
groceries and running errands;
visiting, calling or reading to the
visually impaired; giving caretakers a break; and driving clients to
local doctors, libraries and stores.
However, volunteers do not provide services such as giving or
dispensing medication to clients;
cleaning the household or premises; or giving personal care and
bathing.
ITAVNJ is always in need of
volunteers. New volunteers are

in our opinion

Hello, spring, are you here yet?

Our moods, our businesses, our livelihoods depend on your arrival
arch 20. Nine more days. It
cant come soon enough. Officially, thats the start of
spring. Whether Mother Nature
agrees, though, is anyones guess at
this point. Early forecasts show she
will be good to us, but how much can
we actually rely on forecasts?
Spring is what we all need. We need
a nice stroll downtown, in the park or
on the boardwalk to reinvigorate us, to
get us out of the doldrum into which
winter plunged us. Winter started off
just fine, but it put a damper on everything, and everyone, in February and
so far this month. Just last week, snow
was dumped across the state.
Winter has not just affected all of

our moods, it has affected our bottom

lines, too.
Well most likely be paying more in
taxes, in some way, at some level, for
pothole repairs and salt purchases.
Snow has affected local businesses
as well, especially retail shops. Bad
weather kept patrons inside for the
last few months. The arrival of spring

will hopefully turn that around, and

quickly.
Snow and biting cold have kept people in the mindset of no end in sight,
and have prevented many from taking
day trips to our states wonderful goodweather spots, or from planning future
trips, as well.
In a little more than 60 days, the official start of the summer beach season
will be here. Does that even sound
right?
The good news is that it started to
warm up this week. Spring really does
look like its right around the corner.
Lets hope Mother Nature cooperates
and doesnt reverse the tide back to
winter. Please spare us!

many obstacles to overcome this

year for the team, one of the bigger ones was remembering this is
a different year, separate from
last year.
The swimmers had to remember that just because they were
good in the past, that doesnt
translate to this year.
We have talent, but you need
effort. You cant take anything for
granted. You need to train hard
and be physically and mentally
ready for a good performance,
DeNick said.
Over the course of the season,
the swimmers were getting faster
with each meet and getting more
focused, according to DeNick.
When it came time for the championships, they played on the
strengths of the team, and instead of winning by a small margin, like in previous years, the
boys were able to pull ahead by a
large 18-point margin this year.
By being a balanced team and
swimming well that day, it wasnt
a nail-biter down to the end,
which is good. The boys really

rose to the occasion, separating
themselves from the competition.
It was great to have that; we
werent used to it, DeNick said.
The meet was highlighted by a
win in the 200 medley relay swam

by seniors JD Schurer, Zach Fong,

Tim Runfola and Devin Nielsen.
Double winners of the meet were
Fong (200IM and 100 breast), Alex
Martin (50 and 100 free) and Runfola (100 fly and 500 free). Schurer
was first in the 200 free. Only a
two-point lead after four events
quickly grew with a 1-2-4 finish in
100 fly featuring Runfola, Matt
Lubin and Tim Cheung. The win
was assured after a 1-3-4 finish
featuring Runfola, Reid Greer and
Christian Wisniewski.
After their win, the boys celebrated by stopping at their favorite restaurant. They also held
a team banquet on March 3 where
they once again celebrated the
successful season and handed out
awards.
For next season, the team will
lose about half of their swimmers with the 16 seniors graduating. Its next goal is to get more
people involved and fill out the
roster.
We have plenty of talented
swimmers, but we need to fill out
the roster and get guys who can
help us. Well see what the eighth
graders are doing and invite anyone else who wants to swim,
DeNick said.

Robotics teams perform well

!
$

By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Moorestown FIRST Robotics
has only been around for about
three years, but the teams of the
Moorestown Robotics Club have
all done well for themselves.
Three of the five Moorestown
teams won spots at the FIRST
Lego League Qualifier Tournament to advance to the state
championship, which was held at
Delaware State University on Feb.
14. Those teams were the RoboQuakers placing fourth, the
Ghost Peppers placing fifth and
the RoboLearners placing eighth.
Only one team advanced to the
FLL World Championship in St.
Louis, but it was not any of the
Moorestown teams. However, the
Robo Learners won first place
award for Best Mechanical Design of their robot.
Overall, the teams did well
with the RoboLearners coming in
third place, Ghost Peppers coming in ninth and RoboQuakers
coming in 15th out of 36 teams.
The RoboLearners also won the
Innovative
Solution
Project
Award at the qualifier, which recognizes a teams solution that is
exceptionally
well-considered
and creative, with good potential
to solve the problem researched.
The team loved it; I loved it,
too. It was really a team effort.
The kids were extremely happy
and thrilled to go to the state competition. Also, it was kind of cool
that we won for both our project
and our robot, earning an award
in both areas, Coach Chris
Schaffer said.
I was surprised when we won
the project award. I thought there
would be better ideas than ours.
But I wasnt as surprised about
the mechanical design award; the
judges really liked our robot.
They
were
just
amazed,
RoboLearner member Grace
Mumma said.
The RoboLearners were made
up of coaches Schaffer and James
Mumma and members Evan
Schaffer, J.J. Mumma, Adam Connor, Grace, Annabelle Jin and Dominick Ruccolo.
FIRST Lego League introduces
young people, ages 9 to 14, to the

to mechanical things; and Grace

joined because of her brother. Despite the different reasons, they
all came to love it.
From September, the team had
four months to build, program
and improve their robot until the
first competition. They would
prepare the robot, run missions
and evolve their robot from trial
and error. Their robot had two
large wheels in the front and
smaller wheels in the back to
move, wheels on the sides so it
wouldnt get stuck, and a forklift
in the front.
The forklift was added in the
front because it could be used for

and technology while building
self-confidence, knowledge and
valuable employment and life
skills. FLL challenges kids to
think like scientists and engineers. Alongside adult mentors,
FLL teams solve problems using
engineering concepts, presentation techniques and robots.
Members of the RoboLearners
all got involved in robotics for different reasons. Evan loved building Legos and programing robots
while hanging out with his
friends; J.J. felt it was a perfect
combination for him, loving to
build things and computers;
Adam
liked
programing;
Annabelle wanted more exposure

every single mission we were

going to do; we didnt have to take
off the forklift and put a different
attachment back on, Evan said.
The team also had to come up
with a side project, which they
called HEARcules.
The project was an app that
could translate what a teacher is

saying into reading technology

for the deaf.
They would be able to use
Google glasses to get real-time
sign language translation.
We wanted to integrate the
deaf person into the classroom.
Sometimes, they can be separated, and that would make it hard
for their social skills to evolve,
J.J. said.

The team members, mostly
made up of members new to robotics, were surprised and overjoyed they had made it to the state
competition.
At the competition itself, they
were nervous because they really
wanted to win. However, they
werent upset. Receiving third
place as well as awards for both
their robot as well as their project
is a great achievement, the members said.
Even though we didnt win,
we were in third place and I really
liked that, Evan said.
Members of the Robolearners
definitely wish to continue to do
robotics and encourage others to
do it as well. Not only do you

teamwork, problem solving and
more, but you also meet new people and create new friendships.
I will continue. I like robotics;
even though sometimes things
can be hard, robotics is my thing.
It is a lot of program and computer working that you cant do that
at home. It also helps me meet
new people, like Annabelle. I
never knew her this before year. I
like robotics for those reasons,
Grace said.
I like the teamwork factor, and
I would like to move on and nail
my teamwork, Adam said.
Coaches Schaffer and Mumma

also wanted to let parents know

that Moorestown Robotics is looking for coaches, as a lot are not
continuing to coach next year.
In Moorestown, we have a ton
of kids interested, but not enough
adults. If adults are interested,
that would be great, and we definitely need the help, Schaffer
said.
