OVERVIEW

SECTION 1 OVERVIEW
1.1 INTRODUCTION
This document provides information for interfacing non-certified Garmin portable aviation products with certified Garmin
panel-mount aviation products in experimental aircraft. There are currently four types of these data interfaces available:
Aviation Input
Frequency Transfer
NMEA Data
TIS (Traffic Information Service)
Each of these interfaces is described in a separate section of this document. Appendix A lists wiring and pinout information
and Appendix B lists the interface configuration instructions for all applicable units. Each unit must be properly connected
and configured for the interface to function correctly.

CAUTION: Pilots/installers who intend to use the applicable Garmin portable and panel-mount units described herein
must fully read and understand all warnings, cautions, notes, and instructions provided in the owners/installation
manuals for such units prior to their use.

CAUTION: All panel-mount units must be returned-to-service per the applicable maintenance and/or installation
manual.

CAUTION: The portable unit interface installation must not create any interference with the normal operation of
the panel-mount unit. If any abnormalities with panel-mount unit tuning or operation are encountered, disconnect
the portable unit from the interface.

NOTE: The interfaces and installations described in this document are applicable to Experimental Aircraft only, and

APPENDIX A CONNECTION INFORMATION

APPENDIX A CONNECTION INFORMATION

A.1 WIRING
Wiring should be installed in accordance with AC 43.13-1B Chapter 11, and the following:
It should not be possible for a wiring harness to be exposed to wire chafing
Ensure that routing of the wiring does not come in contact with sources of heat, RF or EMI interference
Avoid routing cables near power sources (e.g., 400 Hz generators, trim motors, etc.) or near power for fluorescent
lighting
Avoid sharp bends in wiring and routing near aircraft control cables
Keep wiring as short and direct as practical
Use 22 to 24 AWG wire for all data connections*
*the 010-10082-00 power/data cable uses 18 AWG for the Power (red) connection
For dual unit installations, care should be taken to ensure separation between wires of redundant systems to
reduce the possibility of loss of navigation due to a single event. When wire separation cannot be achieved, the
following issues should be addressed:
It should not be possible for a wiring harness to be exposed to wire chafing in a manner that both GPS units fail
simultaneously
The wiring harness should not be located near flight control cables and controls, high electrical capacity lines (e.g
DC electric motor cables), or fuel lines
The wiring harness should be located in a protected area of the aircraft (e.g., isolated from engine rotor burst)
Do not route cable near high-energy sources (i.e. DC motors, high heat sources)

position. A 3/32 inch hex drive tool is then inserted into the access hole at the bottom of the unit face. Rotate the hex
tool clockwise while pressing on the left side of the bezel until the unit is firmly seated in the rack.

NOTE: Prior to placing the unit in the rack, it may be necessary to insert the hex drive tool into the access hole and
rotate the mechanism 90 counterclockwise to ensure correct position .

NOTE: Be sure not to over tighten the unit into the rack. The application of the hex drive tool torque exceeding 15
in-lbs can damage the locking mechanism.

To remove the unit from the rack, insert the hex drive tool into the access hole on the unit face and rotate
counterclockwise until the unit is forced out about 3/8 inch and can be freely pulled from the rack.

APPENDIX A CONNECTION INFORMATION

SL40 COM & SL30 NAV/COMM RADIOS

The SL30 & SL40 units include an RS-232 serial port for making optional connections. The serial port can be
used to input active and standby frequencies, and is used to input frequencies from a remote source. When making
connections to the serial port, use a two-conductor shielded cable. Make RxD1 and Serial Ground connections to the
rear connector (see following figures). Connect the shield to the rear of the mounting frame on the connector plate.
The shield leads must be <1.25 inches.
A crimp tool meeting MIL specification M22520/1-01 and a positioner/locater are required to ensure consistent,
reliable crimp contact connections for the rear connector. Two sources of these tools and the tool numbers are listed
below.

UNIT INSERTION AND REMOVAL
Before inserting the unit, position the cam lock as shown in the figure below. The front lobe of the cam should
be vertical, and the cam lock mechanism should be fully unscrewed (turned counterclockwise). Slide the unit into
the frame. Turn (clockwise) and carefully hand-tighten (4 in-lbs max.) the cam lock mechanism using only the
3/32 inch hex driver provided in the installation package. When fully engaged, the unit will be pulled into the
frame securing the unit and the connectors. The back of the bezel must be flush to the mounting tube. Do NOT
overtighten. If the cam lock is hard to turn or the unit does not fully seat, the unit is probably binding and the
mounting tube should be checked.

NOTE: Using a larger hex tool than the one provided could result in easily exceeding the allowable torque on the
cam lock and damaging the unit.

Cam Lock Position

To remove the unit from the mounting frame, turn the screw counterclockwise with the hex driver to unscrew the
cam lock mechanism. The unit will begin to pull away from the frame. Turn the screw until slight resistance is felt
and then pull the unit from frame. Do not exert excessive turning force at the end of the cam lock travel or the
unit may be damaged. With the cam lock fully disengaged, pull the unit straight out while holding onto the sides of
the bezel. Do not pull the unit out by the rotary knobs. No special extraction tools are required if the mounting tube
is properly installed.
