OVERVIEW
SECTION 1 OVERVIEW
1.1 INTRODUCTION
This document provides information for interfacing non-certified Garmin portable aviation products with certified Garmin
panel-mount aviation products in experimental aircraft. There are currently four types of these data interfaces available:
Aviation Input
Frequency Transfer
NMEA Data
TIS (Traffic Information Service)
Each of these interfaces is described in a separate section of this document. Appendix A lists wiring and pinout information
and Appendix B lists the interface configuration instructions for all applicable units. Each unit must be properly connected
and configured for the interface to function correctly.
CAUTION: Pilots/installers who intend to use the applicable Garmin portable and panel-mount units described herein
must fully read and understand all warnings, cautions, notes, and instructions provided in the owners/installation
manuals for such units prior to their use.
CAUTION: All panel-mount units must be returned-to-service per the applicable maintenance and/or installation
manual.
CAUTION: The portable unit interface installation must not create any interference with the normal operation of
the panel-mount unit. If any abnormalities with panel-mount unit tuning or operation are encountered, disconnect
the portable unit from the interface.
NOTE: The interfaces and installations described in this document are applicable to Experimental Aircraft only, and
are not recommended for Type Certificated Aircraft.
NOTE: Garmin has not received FAA installation airworthiness approval for the interfaces described in this
document.

2.2 INTERCONNECTION
This interface requires a two-wire connection as shown in the following figure. Make sure that both units share a common
ground. See Appendix A for pinout and wiring information. Note that several RS-232 channels may be available from the
Panel-mount unit, make sure that the channel number used for the interconnect wiring is also selected during the interface
configuration (Appendix B).

CAUTION: If any abnormalities with SL 30/40 tuning or operation are encountered, disconnect the portble unit from
the SL 30/40 tuning interface.
NOTE: See the SL30/40 Users Guide regarding information on accessing remote frequency lists.
The applicable portable units(listed in above table) can directly tune a standby frequency in the radio by using the Comm
tab when reviewing an airport.
3.2 INTERCONNECTION
To output frequency data to an SL40 comm or SL30 nav/comm radio, connect the Data Out pin on the portable unit to
the RxD pin on the comm radio. It is not necessary to connect the comm radio to the portables Data In pin. See Appendix
A for pinout and wiring information.

GPSMAP 195
The GPSMAP 195 may be wired to an aircrafts 10-40v DC system using an optional power/data cable (010-10135-00).
Consult the wiring diagram below for proper connections. The connector end of the cable attaches to the back of the unit
using either the long brass thumb screw supplied or standard M3 x .5 (6mm) machine screws. The connector end may also
be attached to the yoke mount for convenient attachment to aircraft power.

NOTE: Using a larger hex tool than the one provided could result in easily exceeding the allowable torque on the
cam lock and damaging the unit.
To remove the unit from the mounting frame, turn the screw counterclockwise with the hex driver to unscrew the
cam lock mechanism. The unit will begin to pull away from the frame. Turn the screw until slight resistance is felt
and then pull the unit from frame. Do not exert excessive turning force at the end of the cam lock travel or the
unit may be damaged. With the cam lock fully disengaged, pull the unit straight out while holding onto the sides of
the bezel. Do not pull the unit out by the rotary knobs. No special extraction tools are required if the mounting tube
is properly installed.

as desired and press EDIT ENTER.
Input/Output Page
The Input/Output Format field, at the top of the page, lets you specify one of seven interface formats:
Aviation In/No Out is a proprietary interface for connection to a GARMIN panel-mounted GPS receiver. With
this selection, and a two-wire connection to the panel-mounted GPS receiver, any GOTO or route selection is
automatically displayed on the GPSMAP 195. This eliminates the need to enter the data into both units.
Data Transfer is the proprietary interface that allows you to update the Jeppesen database. This format is also used
to exchange data such as waypoints, routes and track logs between GPSMAP units or with a GARMIN PC Software
Kit.
NMEA In/NMEA Out supports input from an NMEA compatible external device and provides NMEA 0183 output.
NMEA In/No Out allows input from a NMEA compatible external device, with no output capabilities.
No In/NMEA Out provides navigation information to a compatible NMEA 0183 v.2.0 device at 4800 baud.
No In/No Out provides no interfacing capabilities.
RTCM In/NMEA Out allows Differential GPS (DGPS) input using a standard RTCM format and also provides
selectable NMEA output.
RTCM In/No Out allows DGPS input using a standard RTCM format, without output capabilities.
