SIGNIFICANT RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENT:

(a)

Development of New Techniques:

Unification of G-M fields: For the first time, a direct mathematical relation was derived between
the gravity and magnetic fields resulting from an arbitrary object. This new result facilitates the
construction of a unified algorithm for simultaneous computation of gravity and magnetic
anomalies. This algorithm has revolutionized the joint interpretation of observed G-M data.
Improved digital filters for Hankel transform: A new procedure is given for the design of short
digital linear filters commonly used for the numerical computation of electrical and electromagnetic

sounding curves. The new 120 points optimized filter is superior in accuracy and speed than the
longest 801 points Andersons filter, which has resulted in large saving of computing time.
(b) Hydrocarbon Exploration:
Gravity studies in Saurashtra, Kutch and Deecan Syneclise: A new Bouguer anomaly map of
Saurashtra, Kutch and Deecan Syneclise area has been prepared using high precision 22,000 gravity
observations. Modelling of gravity data using constraints from seismic and magneto-telluric results
has delineated large Mesozoic basins under the Deccan trap cover.
G-M studies in Upper Assam and Sanchor Valley: Gravity-magnetic (G-M) survey in logistically
difficult terrain of Brahmaputra valley has delineated basement structures suitable for hydrocarbon
accumulation. Based on the result of magnetic measurements in Sanchor basin, Rajasthan, a
borehole was sighted over the seismic structure, which proved to be oil bearing.
G-M studies in South Rewa basin: G-M studies in South Rewa basin have outlined the basin
configuration which is intruded by large number of basic dykes and sills.
G-M studies in K-G basin: G-M studies have brought out basement up warps and deepressions in
the East Godavari sub-basin and delineated structural features for detailed investigations.
(c) Mineral Exploration:
Uranium Exploration: Non-radiometric geophysical techniques were used to delineate structural
control for uranium mineralization in various parts of India such as Singhbhum, Central India,
Assam and Rajasthan.
Diamond Exploration: Extensive geophysical surveys comprising EM and magnetic methods
and geochemical stream sediment sampling were carried out as UNDP assisted program in parts
of Andhra Pradesh to locate Kimberlite pipes. This has resulted in successful location of a new
diamond bearing Kimberlite pipe near Lattavaram establishing the efficacy of integrated approach
for diamond exploration.
(d) Deep Continental Studies:
Crustal Studies across Cambay rift and Saurashtra Plateau: Modelling of gravity anomalies
across Cambay rift basin has revealed for the first time a low-density subcrustal body beneath the
Cambay region. It also suggests thick and anomalous lower crust beneath the Saurashtra plateau
and Aravalli fold belt and thinning of crust beneath the Cambay rift.
Gravity Studies across collision zones: Modelling of gravity data in conjunction with seismic,
magnetotelluric and geological input, across Aravalli-Delhi fold belt (ADFB) in northwest India
and Central Indian suture (CIS) zone in central India has provided ample evidence in support of the
collision and subduction processes during Proterozoic period in these two terrains.

(e) Deformation Studies:

Repeat measurements of micro-gravity, GPS and geodetic observations have indicated 1.5mts of
vertical deformation in the epicentre zone of Bhuj earthquake of Jan 26, 2001. Initiated continuous
gravity measurement in Koyana-Warna to understand the earthquake process in the reservoir
triggered seismic region.
(f) Publication of New Gravity map series of India:
One of the coordinators for the publication of the new gravity map series-2006 released on 19th
Feb2007, which includes about 1,40,000 gravity data from all the major geo-scientific
organisations including GSI.
(g) Absolute gravity measurements:
For the first time high precision absolute gravity measurements using state of the art FG-5
instrument were initiated in India and number of absolute gravity stations have been established at
various locations.
