The Responsibility of Social Media

Social media is a current topic that ignites a response in almost every social
setting. Social media has revolutionized the way in which we interact with one another.
Clay Shirky describes how never before has a social platform been able to sustain
multiple conversations, interactions, images, videos, and sound at one time until now.
Therefore it is worth discussing the benefits as well as the conflicts of social media in
todays society. However, popular social media platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, and
Facebook hold a higher relevancy among concerned individuals regarding cyber bullying,
disengagement from reality, and various forms. Although, I agree that social media can
be used as a weapon, I also believe that it can be utilized to build an inclusive community
that engages outside of social media. Socality is a social movement that has set out with a
vision to do just this, create lasting community that changes the way we do life. Socality
is a social movement among creatives that encourages local communities to gather and
share their work on social platforms, specifically Instagram.
My first source, How Social Media Can Make History by Clay Shirky was
incorporated based on his description the influence social media has in society. He
expounds on how social media is being developed in every day life. My remaining
sources were centered on the creator of Sociality, Scott Bakkens vision for Socality and
individuals who are actively involved. The goal of this assignment was to convey an
innovative way to utilize social media to cultivate something positive and reinforce
fortified local communities.
My rhetorical choices for this assignment were strategic. My goal was to utilize
instrumental music to enhance the voice-overs and spark a response from the listener. A
response that identified with creative passion and the desire to transform something
negatively associated into something positive. The instrumental music is designed to
guide the listener and the sound effects (waves, birds, wind) associate with the notion of
venturing out and creating. It is significant for the volume to be consistent and transitions
to be smooth in order to maintain consistency and flow of the work. I used the following
special effects to eliminate distractions: Amplitude and Compression (Speech Volume
Leveler), Noise Reduction/ Restoration (Automatic Phase Correction), Time and Pitch
(Automatic Pitch Corrector). All of them with the exception of the last significantly
eliminated distracting pauses and volume shifts.
