Art of many colours is set

to be on display at gallery
THE Waterfront Gallery
in Milford Haven has
an exciting exhibition
programme for 2015,
starting with the spring
show for resident exhibitors.
Opening on March 6 and
running until April 18, the
spring collection features
the work of more than 25
artists and craft workers.
Among them is glass artist Jackie Henshall with
her unusual curved fused
glass work.
Explaining her methods
she said: When I began
to work with fused glass,
it was natural for me to
bring my landscape painting experience to it, but
best of all has been the
intensity of the process,
being able to work in three
or four layers at the same
time and the excitement
of the firing transformation.
Also showing are the
textiles of Pembrokeshire
designer Joy Jenkins,
exploring the concept of
wearable art with her
functional and intricate
unique felt scarves, shawls
and brooches made from
wool, mulberry and tussah
silk as well as alpaca.
Alongside is Lynn Parrs

work demonstrating how

she uses oils, watercolour,
textiles, embroidery and
collage to create her images using her experience
as a photographer and
ecologist to inform the
work.
Sculpture is contributed
by Sally Amoore with her
bronze animals and Ben
Dearnley with his work
in marble and stone as
well as John Evans bronze
semi-abstract figurative
work.
There will be new

Unique
blues
band to
perform
RINGING down the
curtain on another successful winter series of
concerts at Burnett's Hill
Chapel, Martletwy will
be the ive-piece blues,
jazz and tango band Little
Rumba.
The band features musicians from very different
musical backgrounds,
which is probably why
the band presents such a
unique blend of styles.
John Hymas (violin, viola
and accordion) trained as
a professional viola player
in the classical world. He
is also a highly regarded
composer and a founder
member of contemporary
folk band Hoover the Dog.
Singer and guitarist
Pete Mustill was part of
the original R&B boom in
the 60s but had a "Road to
Damascus" moment in the
1980s on hearing the music
of Astor Piazzolla. This
led to the formation of The
Tango Band and a top three
album in the Czech charts.
Bass player Jacqui Savage
has played for several bands
most recently backing
bluesman Dirty Ray.
Appearing as special guest
will be singer Jess Hall.
The concert on Thursday,
March 19, starts at 7.30pm.
Tickets are 10.00 each and
available from Main Street
Music on 01646 621530.

From the
Emerald
Island
HIGHLIGHTS of the 2014
St Davids Folk Festival will
be shown on S4C on Sunday,
March 15 at 8pm.
The programme features
a crew of musicians who
travelled from Ireland to be
special guests at the music
event.
Welsh singer Ryland Teifi
and his Irish wife Roisin
Clancy were commissioned
to form a new group to
celebrate the special relationship between Wales
and Ireland. Roisin is the
daughter of Bobby Clancy,
one of the legendary Clancy
Brothers, and the new
group comprises the new
generation of musicians
from the Clancy family.
Also performing are Calan, Honey Fungus, Dysons
Wake and Dave Burns,
founder member of The
Hennessys and Ar Log.

Like father, like

son on stage
THIS weeks comedy
offering at The Queens
Hall, Narberth, sees the
return to the county of
a Milford Haven man
making his first tentative
steps on the UK professional comedy scene.
David Arnold, a former
manager at the bingo
halls in Milford and
Pembroke Dock, will be
following in his fathers
footsteps when he takes
to the stage on Thursday,
March 12.
Davids father Roger
Arnold was well known
throughout Pembrokeshire as one half of comedy
duo Knight & Daye, and
as his sons number one

supporter, he has already

booked his seat in the
front row.
Speaking of the event,
David said: Its a fantastic opportunity for me to
share the stage and learn
from some of the UKs top
professional comedians.
Ive got plenty of family
and friends coming along
to cheer me on so its
bound to be a good night.
Those top comedians
he refers to are Chris
Brooker, Laura Lexx and
Craig Murray, whom you
might recognise from the
Plusnet adverts.
Tickets are 10 in advance from the Queens
Hall, Narberth.

Schools show off

prize-winning art
ON Saturday, March 7, Pembrokeshire schools were invited to
exhibit the work of their most
talented artists in the auspicious
Oriel Q Gallery in Narberth.
The standard of work was outstanding and the visitors who came
to the opening were impressed by
the variety of entries.
The exhibition was a chance
for schools and individuals to be
awarded prize money for the winning pieces in all three of the Key
Stages.
The first prize for Key Stage Three
went to Evan Davies from Sir Thomas Picton School for his Eisteddfod
Spoon Dragon.
The first prize for Key Stage
Four went to Molly Arran from Sir
Thomas Picton School for her Pembrokeshire Self Portrait.
There was a joint first prize for
Key Stage Five which was awarded
to Jess Rees for her realistic interpretation of a rusty oil barrel and

AFTER a winter break,

MaDCaff returns to Cardigans Small World Theatre
on the afternoon of Saturday,
March 14.
MaDCaff is an open cafe
event showcasing the talents
of local musicians and dancers who are, or have been,
affected by mental illness.
This will be MaDCaff s third
appearance at Small World
Theatre and the audience
can expect the usual eclectic
mix of performances. Previous events have showcased
an amazing range of talent,
including several choirs and
drumming groups, a 21st century one man band and even
a fully clothed pole dancing
demonstration.
Organisers are now looking
for new sources of funding
to keep it going. The event
starts at 4pm and entry is
free.

Swansea-based band The Rumblestrutters bring feel-good blues, jazz and ragtime of the 1920s
and 30s. The authentic sound of Prohibition America.

HEAD back in time to the

golden age of jazz with the
Rumblestrutters at the Cellar
Bar next month.
The band will be bringing you a night of feel-good
blues, jazz and ragtime of the
Prohibition era.
If you missed them at
Cuffern earlier this year,
the bands vivid evocations
of the music of the 1920s
and 30s has earned them a
reputation as one of the most
authentic and popular roots
bands around.
Appearances include the
Birmingham International
Jazz Festival and Gloucester
Blues Festival.
Started during a spring
clean when Jon Toft (vocals,
mandolin, banjo) found an
ink jug at the back of an
old cupboard, the Swanseabased acoustic three-piece
also features the virtuoso

guitar-playing and voice of

Jonathan Nicholas, and Liam
Ward on vocals, harmonica
and jug.
After a recent concert, Pontardawe Arts Centre said: It
is really heartening to know
such relatively young guys
are into playing this sort of
material and with so much
authority.
"They are keeping roots
music alive.
So with an average age of
30, how do they go about
tapping into a musical canon
from the 1920s and 30s?
The selection process is
simple, Ward says, the
songs must be great and
ideally older than our combined age.
The The Rumblestrutters
play the Cellar Bar, Quay St,
Cardigan on Friday March
20, from 8pm.Tickets are 5
from the venue.

Gallery brings together new and established artists

THE "Here and Now" exhibition continues this month at
Tenbys White Lion Street
Gallery, bringing together
work by an eclectic group of
artists.
The collection features 60
superb art works by 25 invited
artists, including regular contributors and someshowing their
work for the first time.
Among the new exhibitors are
Heather Raymond a young selftaught artist whose tiny triptych
of an orange won the Emrys Art
Award in the competition of 2014
who has also brought an unusual collection of monochrome
still life.
Sian McGill, new to the gallery
but established as an accomplished acrylic painter, brings
Pembrokeshire landscapes. Also
well known in the area but new
to the gallery is Jan Gregson
her work includes large moody
depictions of the Preselis and

the interior of Dylans writing

shed.
Brenda Evans returns with sea
and surf based work in acrylics,
nothing like her husband Bert
Evans popular populated townscapes. With the same panache
and vivid colour, Beatrice Williams paints rural scenes including the bustle of Tenby Harbour
and the calm around Dylans
boathouse. Geoff Yeomans
returns after a break with some
incredibly textured mysterious
oil paintings.
Penny Timmis brings lively
abstracted waterfalls of Brazil,
with droplets, sprays and spatters of movement. Carole King
shows closely observed green
hellebores and purple pansies.
Judith Stroud (of Swansea
Printmakers) takes up the theme
of flowers with new monotype
compositions.
For those gallery visitors who
like to "know what they are

looking at", the watercolours

of Graham Hadlow and David
Bellamy and the oils of Thomas
Haskett provide skilful and accurate representations of town,
harbour and landscape. Moving
towards abstraction is the pareddown layered work of Damian
Dowling and the clever textures
of Elaine Grahams paintings.
Dorian Spencer Davies bright
Tenby scenes wobble and wriggle under starry skies.
Glenn Ibbitsons contributions
defy easy definitions: he shows
the homeless shelters outside
Japanese towns but within the
outline of a hanging kimono,
delicate work in a strong shape.
Two other pieces are a continuation of his Consignment series
which shows naked figures
confined in crates, a comment
on human trafficking.
The exhibition continues until
March 28. It may be viewed on
artmatters.org.uk
